It's Betis In the Semi

Celtic will face Spanish side Real Betis in the UEFA Cup Semi Final. Betis were in the same Champions League Phase 1 group as Rangers and narrowly missed out on qualification, dropping into the UEFA Cup. They beat Rangers home and away in that group and have disposed of Shakhtar, Nantes and PSV on their way to the Semi. Celtic will have their work cut out to get past the Spaniards if they are to meet the winners of the Arsenal/Feyenoord encounter in the Final.

Scots trounced in Croatia

Scotland suffered a comprehensive 3-0 defeat in Croatia last night in their Euro 2004 qualifier. Berti's boys have now played 4 games in the group and have only a home win over Cyprus to show for their efforts and qualification looks like a hopeless task.

Johnston Double Sees Off Dundee

Two goals from Alan Johnston were instrumental in the 3-1 win for Celtic over Dundee at Dens Park last night. He opened the scoring in the 23rd minute and three minutes later Mark Kerr made it 2-0 as he scored from the penalty spot. Dundee worked hard to deny the visitors many further chances and pulled themselves back into the game when Nacho Novo scored with 20 minutes remaining. However, they couldn’t find a way through the Celtic defence to claim an equaliser and Johnston made sure of the points when he scored his second in stoppage time.

Scots Pole Axed

Scotland suffered yet another defeat in their Euro 2004 qualification campaign, going down 4-0 to Poland in a lacklustre display. With all hope of qualification now gone the pressure is mounting on Berti Vogts and the SFA may well decide that it is time for a change of management.

First League Defeat For Celtic

Yesterday at Celtic Park Kilmarnock inflicted the first league defeat of the season on Celtic with a narrow 1-0 win. Craig Dargo was the Killie hero, scoring the only goal of the game in the 35th minute. Charlie Miller struck a free kick against the cross bar in the first half but apart from that Celtic showed very little attacking threat and were strangely lethargic. They will need to play much better than this in next weeks first leg tie against Betis if they are to progress. Rangers now top the table, one point clear of Celtic but having played a game more.

Late Penalty Gives Celtic Hope

A Kiegan Parker penalty three minutes from time gave Celtic a 2-2 draw in their UEFA Cup Semi Final first leg tie at Celtic Park last night. Tick Jones’s team didn’t look at their best and went behind to a Gaston Casas goal after 17 minutes. Gary McCutcheon conjured up an equaliser in the 25th minute but Betis regained the initiative when Casas scored again just before half time. The Argentinean striker is having a terrific season and heads the scoring charts in Spain. Celtic struggled to get back into the match and were finally rewarded when Jackie McNamara was fouled in the area and Parker gave them some hope for the second leg by despatching the spot kick. Arsenal will take a one-goal lead to Feyenoord in the other Semi Final.

Both of the Scottish Cup Semi Final matches produced surprises yesterday. Kilmarnock upset Rangers with a 2-1 win at Celtic Park and First Division Ross County produced a major upset by defeating the holders Livingston by the same scoreline at Somerset Park.

Celtic Just too Strong For Battling Buddies

In yesterday’s televised match at Love Street Celtic proved to be too strong for a hard-working St. Mirren side and goals from Mark Kerr and Kevin Gallacher gave the visitors a 2-0 win. This result takes Celtic back to the top of the table two points ahead of Rangers. St. Mirren remain 10th but there’s just one point between them, Motherwell and Hearts at the foot of the table.

Celts See Off Livvy

Celtic recorded a fine 4-1 victory over third placed Livingston at the Almondvale Stadium last night. First half goals from Paul Lambert, Kiegan Parker and Gary Teale gave the visitors a comfortable lead going towards the break. Paul McKnight pulled one back for Livvy on the stroke of half time but the home side could make no further inroads into a solid Celtic rearguard. A late strike from Parker rounded off the win and sets Celtic up for the climax of the season.

A Tale Of Two Keepers

The encounter between Celtic and Hibs at Parkhead was decided by the performances of their respective goalkeepers. For Hibs, Jim Provett was the hero as a string of brilliant stops denied the Celtic attack. At the other end Jamie Langfield, making a rare start in place of Rab Douglas as Tick Jones rested most of his key players, was less impressive. It looked like business as usual for Celtic as Don Hutchison opened the scoring after 10 minutes. But five minutes later Hutch hobbled off and was replaced by Kevin Gallacher. Shortly after that John O’Neill equalised for the visitors and Provett made sure that half time was reached on even terms. The home side were shocked when Gary O’Connor put Hibs ahead with 20 minutes remaining and Luna rounded off a great afternoon for the Hibees with a third near the end. Rangers failed to take full advantage of Celtic’s slip as they were held 2-2 by Dundee United so Celtic stay top by a single point.

Away Goal Heartache In Spain

Celtic came agonisingly close to reaching the UEFA Cup Final last night but in the end a scoreless draw was enough to send Real Betis through thanks to their fine performance in Glasgow. Celtic worked hard but just couldn't find the creative spark required to penetrate a very competent Betis defence. On the few occasions that a chance did present itself the Betis keeper was equal to the challenge. At the other end Rab Douglas was called into action several times and did well to keep his team alive. The Celtic cause wasn't helped by injuries to Charlie Miller and his replacement John Collins. In the other Semi Final a last-minute goal by Kanu ensured that Arsenal made the final. With seconds remaining Feyenoord were ahead 2-0 on the night but the stoppage time goal took the Gunners through on away goals.

Weary Celts Succumb To Late Equaliser

A Celtic side decimated by injuries and no doubt still suffering emotionally from their UEFA Cup exit were denied three points at Livingston when the home side equalised with virtually the last kick of the game. Kevin Thomas gave Celtic the lead after 10 minutes and despite Steven Pressley joining the long injury list, it looked like they would hang on for the win. That was until Livingston substitute Vincent Sullivan jinked through a weary defence to fire home the equaliser. Rangers 2-0 win over Aberdeen takes them to the top of the table and sets up next week’s Old Firm clash at Parkhead as a likely title decider.

Celtic In Dreamland

Celtic went in to their crucial match against Rangers yesterday with no less than 7 players on the injury list. To make matters worse, 6 of their first team squad played in Scotland’s meaningless friendly on Wednesday when their manager would have preferred them to have been conserving their energies ahead of this critical encounter. However, all of this mattered little as Tick Jones’s team rattled 5 goals past a bewildered Rangers. The rout started when Kiegan Parker found the net with just two minutes on the clock. Alan Johnston added a second on 22 minutes and three minutes later Neil McCann took out Gary Teale in the box and Parker stroked home the penalty. Gary McCutcheon added two more goals in the second half to complete a joyous afternoon for Celtic. The win takes Celtic back to the top of the table with just two games of the season remaining.

Title Race Goes To The Wire

Narrow wins for both Rangers and Celtic yesterday ensured that the race for the SPL title will go all the way. A Gary McCutcheon goal 20 minutes from time gave Celtic the win at Aberdeen although had Celtic shown greater composure in front of goal it would not have been such a nerve-wracking afternoon for the fans and the manager. Rangers completed a 3-2 win over Hibs to keep them in with a shout if Celtic are unable to finish the job at home to Dundee United next weekend. Celtic Are Champions

There were scenes of jubilation at Celtic Park yesterday as a 2-0 victory over Dundee United ensured that Celtic were crowned as Premier League champions. Goals from Gary McCutcheon and Gary Teale provided the win although a surprise 1-0 win for Livingston over Rangers rendered the Parkhead result irrelevant. Capturing the title in a titanic struggle over rivals Rangers certainly seems to have vindicated the controversial decision taken two seasons ago to focus on signing and playing Scottish players in order to rejuvenate the national game.

Season Review

Welcome to our annual roundup of the season just completed in Scotland and around Europe. In Scotland, Celtic showed that their "Braveheart Revolution" could bring success as they won the Premiership with a 5-point gap over Rangers. Celtic dominated the annual awards with boss Tick Jones voted Manager of the Year. His players also featured strongly in their respective categories. The Scottish Cup was won by Kilmarnock with Celtic retaining the League Cup and Cowdenbeath won the Challenge Cup. In Europe, Celtic reached the UEFA Cup Semi Final but Rangers finished bottom of their Champions League group with just one point.

The final leagues tables for all four divisions are shown below.

McCutcheon Off The Mark

It took Gary McCutcheon precisely 2 minutes to pick up from where he left off last season as that's how long it took for him to open the scoring for Celtic in their season opener at home to St. Mirren. He had to wait another 40 minutes for his second and then Jamie Smith added a third before half time. McCutcheon completed his hat trick in the second half as Celtic cruised to a comfortable 4-0 win. The only black mark was an injury to Charlie Miller that will keep him out of action for a fortnight.

Celts Turn On the Style

The team selection for Celtic's visit to Dundee United suggested that Tick Jones had half an eye on the forthcoming Champions League clash with Rangers. What could be described as a "second string" team took to the pitch and a 5-2 win for Celtic must cause their rivals some concern. Paul Ritchie and Paul Shields gave the visitors a 2-0 advantage before Derek Lilley pulled one back for United. Stephen Pearson scored on his debut to restore Celtic's two-goal advantage at the break. Colin Cameron added a 4th but United kept plugging away and Mark Wilson scored a second for the home team. Rangers 21-year-old keeper Alan McGregor received his marching orders just 3 minutes into their Champions League qualifying match against Celtic at Parkhead. Substitute keeper Jesper Christiansen could do nothing about Jamie Smith’s penalty and Celtic had an invaluable early goal and were playing against 10 men. Scottish football hit a new low last night as the national side slumped to a 2-1 defeat by Cyprus. Despite outplaying the home side, Scotland were unable to breach a determined defence until Gary Naysmith converted a penalty 5 minutes from time. By that point Cyprus had scored twice with their only two shots on target all evening. The hosts played a classic containing game, rode their luck and contrived two breakaway goals. This result leaves Scotland bottom of their qualifying group and in desperate need of a boost. All Square At Ibrox

The third Old Firm match of the season so far was full of drama and excitement but eventually ended in a 2-2 draw. Given the abysmal start that Rangers have made to the season, Alex McLeish must have been desperate for his team to get a result in this game. So when vibrant young midfielder Stephen Hughes opened the scoring for the home side after just two minutes the manager’s wild celebration was quite understandable. Rangers certainly enjoyed the better of the first half but Celtic gradually started to impose their own attacking style on the game. Some fine goalkeeping by Jesper Christiansen kept Celtic at bay until after the break but it was no great surprise when Gary McCutcheon found an equaliser 5 minutes after the restart. But Rangers kept plugging away and Hughes scored his second of the game on the hour mark. But within seconds of the game recommencing Rangers defender Craig Moore was dismissed for a foolish push on Stephen Pearson. Sensing an opening, Celtic really stepped up the pace and were rewarded 7 minutes later when central defender Eddie Forrest headed home. But despite further sustained pressure the Celtic attack was unable to punish Rangers further and both sides took away a point. Celtic remain top of the table but now have a resurgent Livingston breathing down their necks just one point behind. Rangers stay 9th, one of a clutch of teams on 6 points.

Killie Die A Death In Italy

Last night Kilmarnock put in a truly dreadful performance in their UEFA Cup 1st round tie at Atalanta and suffered a 3-0 defeat. The final scoreline could have been worse but for some wild finishing by the Italians. After such a poor result the Ayrshire outfit are as good as out of the competition barring a miracle at Rugby Park. Rangers defeated Koper of Slovenia 4-1 to make their second leg something of a formality.

Celtic Squeeze Past Caley

Tick Jones fielded what was very much a second string Celtic team for their encounter with newly promoted Inverness Caledonian at Parkhead yesterday and for the majority of the game his side struggled to break down a determined defence. It took the introduction of sharpshooter Gary McCutcheon for Paul Shields to break the deadlock as the striker scored his 12th of the season with less than 15 minutes remaining. The scoreline doesn’t reflect the balance of play as Celtic struck the woodwork no less than 4 times and also contrived to miss a number of passable opportunities.

Shevchenko Treble Destroys Celtic

A superb hat trick from Andriy Shevchenko was the centre point of an excellent 4-1 win for Milan in their visit to Celtic last night. Clearly not at their best, Celtic worked hard but just had no answer to the power and pace of the Ukrainian. Shevchenko gave Milan the perfect start with a goal after 9 minutes and then scored a second in stoppage time at the end of the half. However, Gary McCutcheon gave Celtic hope with a goal of his own just seconds later. Gaizka Mendieta scored a crucial third for Milan on the hour mark and Shevchenko killed the game off in stoppage time. But Celtic can consider themselves a bit unfortunate as both McCutcheon and Alan Johnston had goal efforts ruled out because of the offside flag. But with two defeats in two games, Celtic are bottom of the group with a huge task ahead of them if they are to qualify. In the other game in the group, Lokomotiv Moscow powered to a 4-0 win at home to Rennes.

Mac The Knife Kills Off Dons

A hat trick for Celtic super-striker Gary McCutcheon secured the points in a 3-2 defeat of Aberdeen at Pittodrie yesterday. In the process the 24-year-old racked up his 50th goal for Celtic in 87 appearances. Celtic opened the scoring after 20 minutes but less than 5 minutes later Ross O’Donoghue got the Dons back on terms. McCutcheon scored his second right at the end of the first half to give Celtic the lead that their enterprising play deserved. Aberdeen spent most of the game pinned back in their own half trying to withstand a ferocious Celtic onslaught and their central defensive partnership of Phil McGuire and Barry Miller were outstanding. But finally the pressure told and Mac the Knife completed his hat trick with 20 minutes remaining. Stevie Nicholas got a second for Aberdeen deep in stoppage time but it made no difference to the final outcome.

Lokomotiv Derail Celts

Despite dominating their Champions League Phase 1 game at Parkhead last night, Celtic were held to a 1-1 draw by Lokomotiv Moscow and missed a glorious opportunity to get their qualification campaign back on track. Celtic played very well and created a slew of great opportunities, most of which were missed or well saved. Gary Teale was the only Celtic player to find the net as he gave them the lead after 13 minutes. Chance after chance went begging and, as seems par for the course on these occasions, the visitors scored a late equaliser with their only chance of the game. The other group game saw Milan maintain their 100% record with a 2-0 win in Rennes. Celtic stay bottom of the group with one point but are just three points off the second qualification place.

Killie Out But Gers Go Through

Last night’s UEFA Cup 1st round ties saw Rangers progress 5-2 on aggregate over Koper from Slovenia after a 1-1 away draw but Kilmarnock were kept scoreless by Atalanta at Rugby Park and go out 3-0 on aggregate. Middlesbrough were on the end of a major upset as Bohemians from the Irish Republic overcame a 1-0 deficit from the first leg by winning 4-1 in Dublin. Newcastle progressed with a 3-0 aggregate win over Zeljeznicar of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Spurs beat Zenith Petersburg from Russia 6-3 overall and Arsenal had a comfortable 5-1 aggregate win over Antwerp.

Lambert In Vintage Form

Celtic put aside their midweek European disappointment and recorded a comprehensive 3-0 win over Dunfermline at Parkhead yesterday. Captain Paul Lambert was in imperious form as he controlled the midfield and the visitors never had a sniff at goal all afternoon. Jamie Langfield made a rare start in place of Rab Douglas and Kiegan Parker was preferred in midfield to Jamie Smith. Parker it was who scored the opener after just 4 minutes and Gary McCutcheon added a second 5 minutes later. Super Mac scored the third before half time and Celtic were able to coast through the second half to maintain their unbeaten league record.

Celtic Lift Cup Hoodoo

Celtic successfully negotiated a way past their bogey cup team as they beat Motherwell 2-1 in the 3rd round of the League Cup to book a Quarter Final against Rangers at Ibrox. David Weir got his first goal of the season to give Celtic an early lead but they failed to capitalise on their superiority and Lee Morris snatched an equaliser for Motherwell before the break. In the second half it was all Celtic and they were finally rewarded in stoppage time when Mark Kerr scored the winner.

Scotland Lose Again

Scotland finished off their Euro 2004 qualifying campaign with yet another defeat as they lost 2-1 to Croatia at Hampden. Despite the defeat this was probably the team’s best performance in the group so far and they were unfortunate to concede a stoppage time goal to give Croatia the win. Captain Barry Ferguson got the game off to a great start by scoring after 3 minutes bit Croatia equalised on the half hour. Both sides had further chances but the visitors, desperate for a win to try to secure a playoff place, were the hungrier. Belarus finished as group winners, beating Poland 3-1 in their final game but the Poles just pipped Croatia to the playoffs on goal difference. Scotland finished bottom of the group one point behind Cyprus.

Celtic Squeeze Past Livvy

Celtic continued their fine start to their league campaign with a narrow 2-1 defeat of Livingston at Almondvale yesterday. Gary McCutcheon gave the visitors the lead after half an hour but Rolando Zarate scored a terrific equaliser some 10 minutes later. There was little to choose between the teams in terms of possession and scoring chances and Celtic were luck to claim the winner when Gary Bollan deflected a Gary Teale shot past Broto as the keeper looked to have the original effort covered.

Arbroath Come From Behind To Take Challenge Cup

In an exciting Challenge Cup Final yesterday at East End Park, First Division rivals Arbroath and Ayr United served up a 5-goal thriller. Ayr went two-up inside 15 minutes with strikes from Ian Morris and Emilio Bottiglieri. However, Arbroath levelled the match before half time through Russell Huggon and Delapo Olaoye. With less than 10 minutes remaining Olaoye scored his second of the game to take the trophy back to Gayfield Park.

Celtic Frozen Out In Moscow

Young Celtic keeper Jamie Langfield had a traumatic introduction to European competition in Moscow last night as he was directly responsible for both of Lokomotiv’s goals in their 2-1 win. This defeat means that Celtic’s hopes of progression in the Champions League have now gone and they must pin their hopes on a 3rd place finish and a place in the UEFA Cup. They got off to a terrible start when Langfield was totally deceived by a neat free kick and remained rooted to the spot as the ball hit the back of the net. Mark Kerr, one of the few Celtic players to perform anywhere near to his best, gave the visitors hope with an equaliser but within minutes the Russians were back in front. This time Langfield was beaten from a long way out as he seemed to think that the ball was going off target. The 23-year-old was replaced by Rab Douglas at half time and the Celtic rearguard looked the stronger for it. Milan guaranteed their qualification with a stunning 5-0 demolition of Rennes. All the goals came in the first half and the Italians were able to coast through the second period without breaking sweat.

Highbury Thriller Ends All-Square

Arsenal and Rangers fought out an enthralling 3-3 draw at Highbury last night in their UEFA Cup 2nd round tie. The Glasgow side mounted a fantastic recovery after finding themselves two goals down inside 20 minutes as the came back to lead 3-2. But Thierry Henry’s second goal of the night squared the game and set up a mouth-watering return at Ibrox. Spurs will take a narrow 1-0 lead to Sweden for their second leg against Gothenborg and Newcastle have a one-goal deficit to overcome against Benfica at St. James’s Park. Irish side Bohemians, conquerors of Middlesbrough in the previous round, slumped to a 4-0 defeat at home to Lazio and their European adventure looks to be over.

Kilmarnock Joy As Celts Slip Up

Celtic rather surprisingly suffered their first league defeat of the season at the hands of the bottom club Kilmarnock at Rugby Park yesterday. Tick Jones kept faith with goalkeeper Jamie Langfield after his poor performance in Moscow during the week but in this game Celtic’s problems were in attack, not in defence. A woeful display of finishing from the Celtic attackers saw chance after chance spurned and Kilmarnock took full advantage when Mark Canning fired them into the lead with 30 minutes remaining. Jones threw on an extra attacker in the shape of Paul Shields but to no avail. He watched his team hit the woodwork twice as they attempted to gain an equaliser with no success.

McCutcheon Hat Trick Sinks Rennes

Rennes suffered their second consecutive 5-0 Champions League defeat as Celtic re-kindled their hopes of making it into the UEFA Cup. Over 55,000 had packed into Celtic Park to cheer their team on and Celtic set about the visitors from the off. Kiegan Parker got the ball rolling with a goal after 4 minutes but the Parkhead faithful had to wait another 40 minutes for the second from Mark Kerr. During the intervening time Celtic bombarded the Rennes goal from all angles and keeper Petr Cech was the busiest man on the pitch. Some desperate defending, and a missed penalty by Colin Cameron, looked like keeping Celtic at bay until the break until Kerr scored in stoppage time. With Gary Teale replacing a disappointing Cameron at half time Celtic continued to press and finally the floodgates opened as Gary McCutcheon scored three goals in seven minutes near the end. Milan won 3-1 in Moscow and now Celtic need to do no worse than Rennes in their final game to secure third place in the group.

Kerr Double Kills Off Hibs

Two goals from the excellent Mark Kerr early in the first half proved to be enough for Celtic to overcome spirited Hibs resistance at Celtic Park. The visitors have keeper Geert De Vlieger to thank for a series of fine saves to keep the score respectable as Celtic created the bulk of the chances. Gary McCutcheon had a strike ruled out in the second half as Kiegan Parker was adjudged to be offside. Celtic captain Paul Lambert made light of his 34 years in yet another outstanding midfield display as he guarded his defence and linked with his attacking players.

St. Mirren Shock Celtic

Gordon Strachan’s St. Mirren side provided an upset in last night’s televised encounter at Love Street as they beat Celtic 2-1. With Tick Jones fielding a second string team prior to next week’s big game in Milan, St. Mirren got off to a whirlwind start with Christopher Wreh and Anthony Boyce putting them 2-0 ahead inside 15 minutes. Celtic clawed their way back into the game and Jamie Smith was unfortunate to see his powerful shot come back off the post. Buddies keeper Mike Franks pulled off a string of fine saves and was beaten only once by Paul Shields with 20 minutes remaining but his team held on for an excellent win.

Heartbreak In Milan For Brave Celtic

Celtic left the San Siro Stadium in Milan with their heads held high despite being on the wrong end of a 3-2 scoreline. They were the equal of their hosts for much of the game with the key difference between the two teams being the deadly finishing of the Milan strikers. Jon Dahl Tomasson and Andriy Shevchenko scored a goal each in a devastating 5-minute spell at the end of the first half. However, Celtic came out for the restart in determined mood and Gary McCutcheon scored a brilliant solo effort straight from the restart to stun Milan. They then set about the Italians with a vengeance and came close to an equaliser on several occasions. However, Milan held out and Tomasson scored a decisive third goal with 20 minutes remaining. But Celtic continued the fight and, throwing on an extra attacker the clawed another goal back through Alan Johnston with 12 minutes remaining. On another night they might have even completed their comeback with a victory but not on this night. With Rennes recording a 1-0 win at home to Lokomotiv Moscow the French side grabbed the UEFA Cup place and Celtic’s European adventure is well and truly over for this season.

Celtic In Narrow Win Over United

Celtic took out their frustrations following their European exit in midweek on Dundee United at Parkhead yesterday and United keeper Alan Combe was by far the busiest man on the pitch. But he played well and kept out everything bar a single Gary McCutcheon strike to hold the home side to a 1-0 win.

Berti Vogt’s Scotland side put in a much better performance than we have been used to recently in their 2-0 defeat of Austria in last night’s friendly at Hampden Park. Kenny Miller of Wolves and Celtic’s Mark Kerr provided the goals and Everton’s Gary Naysmith was voted Man of the Match for his excellent display in defence.

Stalemate In Inverness

A superb goalkeeping display by Stephen Robertson kept Celtic at bay as newly promoted Inverness Caledonian gained a valuable point in a scoreless draw in Inverness. Celtic created more than enough chances to win and hit the woodwork twice, but luck was not on their side in this particular game. To make matters worse for the Celts influential defender Jackie McNamara suffered a pulled hamstring and will be out for at least a month.
