Arsenal Sent Packing

Another vibrant attacking display by the in-form Man United sent Arsenal back to London on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline. The visiting defence held firm in the face of steady pressure until just before the half hour when the unfortunate Anthony Reveillere was credited with an own goal after he deflected a Giggs corner past his own keeper. Giggs himself scored the second minutes later and Mark Kerr made it 3-0 just before half time. Arsenal steadied the ship somewhat after the break and clawed a goal back through Darren Purse but the final result was never in doubt.

Jeffers Double Sinks Steelers

Francis Jeffers made his first competitive start for Manchester United and scored twice in their 4-0 defeat of Sheffield United in the FA Cup 3rd Round. Mark Kerr scored early on for United as they set about their visitors with a vengeance and Matthew Piper scored his first goal since his recent move from Sunderland. 2-0 up at the break, the home side refused to take their foot off the pedal and Jeffers struck twice in the second half to give Tick Jones and Gary McCutcheon food for thought. Mac the Knife has been playing well for Jones thus far but his strike rate of 19 goals in 33 games doesn’t match the prolific van Nistelrooy, the man that Mac was brought in to replace this season.

United Sign Young Keeper

Earlier today Man United completed the £1M transfer of 25-year-old goalkeeper Jim Provett from Southampton. With rumours that Roy Carroll is unhappy at being usurped by Richard Wright, the new stopper could find himself elevated to second choice if the Northern Ireland international makes a move to find first team football.

Reds Tear Blues Apart

Man United recorded a comprehensive 4-0 victory over visiting Chelsea last night. The home side powered out of the traps, Kerr and Jeffers each scoring inside the first 15 minutes. Chelsea managed to regroup somewhat but when they had central defender Joe Dolan dismissed for a two-footed challenge on Jeffers it was game over for the Blues. Matty Piper and Martyn Corrigan added two more goals after the break, the second from the penalty spot, to complete a comfortable win.

No Miracle For Siants

After a very bright start to the season, the form of Southampton has plummeted alarmingly and going into their game against Manchester United they were without a win in 7 games. After a comprehensive 4-1 defeat the slump now stands at 8 for David Moyes’ team. But the home side started brightly and even took the lead from the penalty spot through David Noble. But that was as good as it got for the south coast side. David Dunn equalised on 20 minutes and then Saints keeper Arno Brands was sent off for a professional foul. Corrigan converted the kick with ease to send his team into the lead at half time. The visitors added two more after the interval through the Lukes, Chadwick and Young and could even afford the luxury of a missed penalty.

Brave Baggies Come Close

A courageous performance by West Brom came close to gaining them a point against champions elect Man United but in the end they fell just short. The visitors took an early lead when centre back Jason Gavin scored his first goal of the season with a powerful header. But United struck back with goals in each half from Giggs and Piper and United are now 12 points clear of Liverpool and hot favourites for the Premiership title.

Kerr Is Key To United’s Season

Scottish midfielder Mark Kerr has made a huge impression since his arrival from Celtic in the summer. Virtually an ever-present in the team, he has filled the void left by Seba Veron as effectively as anyone could have expected. His haul of 17 goals so far has been vitally important given that his team also dispensed with the services of one the best strikers in the world when Ruud van Nistelrooy was sold off. The 25-year-old may be quiet and unassuming off the pitch but with a ball at his feet he is a born leader, not in any way overawed by his high-profile teammates or weighed down by the expectations of the United supporters. His pivotal role in the centre of midfield is crucial to how the team plays and his vision and awareness, allied with pinpoint passing skills, makes his the ideal playmaker. We can only assume that manager Tick Jones wraps up his midfield diamond in cotton wool between games as his continuing fitness is key to a successful season for his team.

Jeffers Double Does For Villa

Francis Jeffers made it 5 goals in 5 starts for Manchester United as he scored both goals in their 2-0 defeat of Aston Villa in the FA Cup 4th Round. First Division Villa proved to be stubborn opponents for the visitors, and cheered on by a crowd of over 40,000 they worked their socks off to deny United time and space. But Jeffers is grasping his first-team opportunity with both hands and the 27-year-old struck once in each half to ensure that his team goes into the hat for the next round.

Ten-Man United Blow Bolton Away

Despite playing the majority of the game a man short after centre back Neil Baker received a red card early in the game, Man United strolled through the first leg of their League Cup Semi Final against Bolton, running out easy 4-0 winners. The home side were already a goal to the good through David Dunn when Baker got his marching orders after he gave a tug at the shirt of Lee Hughes. The punishment seemed excessive for the crime committed and United look certain to appeal against the decision. But the incident certainly didn’t knock United out of their stride, Jeffers scoring twice in each half and Corrigan, superb in front of the defence, also getting on the scoresheet.

Four More For United

Manchester United had another comprehensive league victory yesterday, returning from their trip to Stoke with a 4-2 victory and three more points. Martyn Corrigan opened the scoring from the penalty spot and Mark Kerr made it 2-0 on the half hour. The home side pulled a goal back just before the break through Alieu to give themselves some hope. But this was quickly extinguished as first Chadwick and then Jeffers scored for the visitors. Alonso Solis scored a late consolation for Stoke but by that time many of their supporters had already left the stadium early.

Tractor Boys Deflated

Ipswich returned home to East Anglia last night having suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Man United. With the home attack continuing to fire on all cylinders it was always going to be hard going for a team in the bottom half of the table. The on-form Francis Jeffers fired home his 9th goal in 8 games to give United the lead and his form has left summer signing Gary McCutcheon relegated to the bench. The impressive David Dunn scored the second shortly after the restart and but for the excellence of visiting keeper Peter Enckelman the final score could have been much more.

Wright In The Wrong At Upton Park

Manchester United keeper Richard Wright was a pivotal figure in their 2-0 defeat at West Ham yesterday. The England international was at fault for the opening goal when his failure to collect a corner led to young defender Glen Johnson having an easy tap-in. Both teams looked very evenly matched thereafter with 3rd placed Hammers impressing, especially through a lively Joe Cole in midfield. Home keeper Matteo Sereni pulled off some fine saves to keep his team in front and Wright atoned for his earlier error with some good stops as well. As the game moved into the last ten minutes still finely balanced Wright was once again to the fore. His rash challenge on Andy Johnson brought the West Ham striker tumbling to the ground. The result – a penalty to the home side and a red card for the keeper. Joe Cole calmly converted past substitute Roy Carroll to seal a famous victory and end United’s 13-match unbeaten run in the league.

Neville Reunion Ends All Square

Man United gained only the second point of their Champions League 2nd phase campaign with a hard fought 1-1 draw against Rangers last night. It was a poignant evening for brothers Phil and Gary Neville who played on opposite sides for the first time since the elder sibling’s move to Rangers last season. The home side created most of the early chances but failed to capitalise on their possession and it was the visitors who reached the break in front. With less than ten minutes of the first half remaining Matthew Piper finished off a flowing move that built from the back when he struck a perfect half-volley into the back of the net. But Rangers came back strongly after the interval and drew level through substitute Wayne Rooney who replaced an ineffective Chris Sutton at half time. The home side came close to a winner later on when Freddie Ljungberg, who passed a late fitness test to start the game, shot against the bar. But United tested Sander Westerveld several times and the Dutch stopper made some fine saves. At the halfway stage in the group Club Brugge are the unexpected leaders with three wins out of three, with United, Rangers and Inter all still in the chase despite having just two points each.

Sublime Scholes Posts Reminder

Paul Scholes has made only half a dozen starts for the Manchester United first team this season but he was given a rare opportunity to impress in the FA Cup 5th round tie against Leeds when Mark Kerr was rested. He grasped his chance with both hands, scoring the only goal in United’s 1-0 win and proving that, even at 33, there is still life in the old dog yet. The winner came on the hour mark when a wonderful turn on the ball left Danny Mills standing and he finished powerfully past Mart Poom. The visitors defended valiantly but seldom showed much endeavour up front and United should have claimed a more comfortable margin of victory.

‘Gers Outclassed At Old Trafford

Man United gained an invaluable win in the Champions League group with an excellent 2-0 defeat of Rangers last night. With the Neville brothers meeting for the second time in a week it was younger brother Phil who came out on top, lifting Man of the Match honours for his fine display, despite picking up a yellow card. Mark Kerr, fresh from his midweek break, got the show on the road early on for United with a goal after just 12 minutes. Then on the half hour the visiting keeper was deemed to have clipped the heels of Ryan Giggs in the area and Martyn Corrigan despatched the spot kick. The visitors rarely threatened in attack and the result was never really in doubt. With Inter recording the same 2-0 scoreline at home to Club Brugge it looks like a straight fight between them and United for the runners-up place in the group.

Scholes Stretches United’s Lead

At this time of the season a congested fixture list is a sure sign of a club chasing success on multiple fronts. This certainly applies to both Manchester United and Liverpool and the top two in the Premiership both played their 7th game of a hectic month in their clash at Old Trafford yesterday. United came out on top thanks to a late goal from a resurgent Paul Scholes to establish a 12-point margin in the title race and establish themselves as firm favourites to lift a 4th successive crown. Whilst by no means a classic, neither side gave an inch. A stubborn defensive display from the Merseysiders, with Henchoz and Repka particularly impressive in central defence, looked to have secured the visitors a point. But then in stoppage time Scholes’ tireless running from midfield finally paid dividends as he found a yard of space to finish past a despondent Dudek.

United Cruise Into League Cup Final

A 1-0 win for Man United at Bolton last night completed a comfortable 5-0 aggregate victory and booked their place in the final of the League Cup where they will face rivals Liverpool. The 4-goal cushion from the first leg allowed Tick Jones to rest many of his key players and but his team were still too strong for a Bolton side that worked hard but lacked a cutting edge. Darren Fletcher scored the only goal of the game after 30 minutes to secure a win on the night. The other Semi Final was a much tighter affair as Stoke fought to overturn a 1-0 deficit at Liverpool. The relegation strugglers played well but in the end they had to settle for a scoreless draw.

United took the lead shortly after the restart when Martyn Corrigan converted from the penalty spot and Piper scored their 3rd on the hour mark. Penalty Shootout Triumph For United

An epic struggle at Old Trafford was finally decided by a nerve-wracking penalty shootout that sends Man United into the Semi Finals of the Champions League at the expense of Roma. Chasing a one-goal deficit from the first leg, United started positively and, with Ryan Giggs a constant threat with his powerful running from midfield, a goal looked sure to come. Sure enough, the veteran Welshman it was who broke the deadlock just before half time to tie the aggregate scores. Play swung from end to end in the second period as both teams searched for a winning goal. But there was no further scoring in the regulation 90 minutes, or in the extra time period and the game was decided on the dreaded penalty shootout. Both sides missed their first attempts but then each scored 4 consecutive kicks to go into sudden death. The normally reliable Martyn Corrigan missed United’s 6th but Roma failed to take advantage, Blasi blasting his kick over. After another successful conversion each it was the turn of Phil Neville to fire wide but once again Roma blew their chance, Emerson placing his kick past the post. Then up stepped United keeper Richard Wright to score with their 9th kick and he completed his heroics by saving the effort from Tommasi to send his team through.

Nice win in the league man, go on and reclaim the Champions League, then you can bow out on a real high with your Brits only team of you want.

There must be a couple of decent regens/youth players popping up at this stage as well.

Its been ages since I read it all the way through, did you win the CL with Celtic before moving to United?
