Club's History - (Wikipedia)

As its name indicates, the club started out as a works team for employees of electronics conglomerate Philips on 31 August (then Koninginnedag), 1913 to celebrate the centennial defeat of the French in the Napoleonic wars. PSV's home stadium, the Philips Stadion, was built at the same time as the inauguration of the club, although its current capacity was achieved by renovations and improvements over the years.

Because of their close ties with Philips, PSV have had the same jersey sponsor without exception since 1982, the year jersey sponsorships were introduced in the Eredivisie. This is a record in Dutch football.

PSV garnered many honours in the football arena and have been credited as the club where many successful players such as Ruud Gullit, Romário, Eric Gerets, Ronaldo, Luc Nilis, Jaap Stam, and Ruud van Nistelrooy made their name. Their success was built on the foundations laid down by other famous players like Willy van der Kuijlen, Jan van Beveren, Jan Poortvliet, and the van de Kerkhof brothers, Willy and René.

PSV has difficulty competing with the salaries that are being paid elsewhere. It has managed though to become a springboard for professional development for talents such as Ronaldo and Eiður Guðjohnsen, who spent two seasons at the club as well as Mateja Kežman and Arjen Robben, and most recently, Park Ji-Sung and Alex.

Famous coaches such as Guus Hiddink (who between stints at PSV coached the Dutch national team to a fourth-place finish in the 1998 FIFA World Cup and South Korea to a similar fourth place in the 2002 FIFA World Cup) have managed the team over the years and have brought considerable successes to the club.

Hiddink era, 2002–2006

Soon after the successful 2002 FIFA World Cup for South Korea, Guus Hiddink was signed as the new coach. Arjen Robben was one of the talented new players at the club, which resulted in a new title. PSV finished last in the group round of the Champions League. In the same season, the influences of Hiddink as coach of Korea are shown, as Park Ji-Sung and Lee Young-Pyo joined the team.

In the 2003–04 season, PSV failed to reclaim the title. In the Champions League group round, the team finished third, despite having the same amount of points as Deportivo La Coruña, but the Spanish side having a better result. In the UEFA Cup, PSV was beaten in the quarter-final by Newcastle United. Goalkeeper Ronald Waterreus, who defended the club goal for 10 seasons, decided to leave the club.

In the 2004–05 season, PSV was at the top of their game with influential players such as Mark van Bommel, Johann Vogel, and Phillip Cocu on midfield, and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Park Ji-Sung as forwards. For the first time in history, PSV reached the knockout stage of the Champions League, despite losing a couple of key players such as Arjen Robben, Dennis Rommedahl, and Mateja Kežman in the summer of 2004. Hiddink created a new team with new players such as defender Alex, goalkeeper Gomes and forwards Jefferson Farfán and DaMarcus Beasley.

PSV finished second behind Arsenal in the group stage of the Champions League and beat 2004 Champions League finalists AS Monaco with 1-0 and 0-2. After reaching the quarter-finals, another team from France came on their route: Olympique Lyonnais. The two matches ended in 1-1 and penalties were needed to decide the semi-finalists. PSV won the penalty shootout with Brazilian striker Robert scoring the final one.

PSV went to Milan, Italy but lost the first tie against AC Milan with a 2-0 score. PSV started well in the return match, with an early goal from Ji-Sung Park. A goal in the second half from Phillip Cocu showed the quality of Hiddink's team. However, Milan midfielder Massimo Ambrosini scored a goal in extra time of the second half. Despite a goal from Cocu a minute later, Milan went to the final on away goals. This is probably one of the strongest matches PSV has ever played and most fans remember the tears of Brazilian defender Alex, also known as "The Tank." The season was the most successful season in the recent years, winning the 18th Eredivisie title as well as their eight KNVB Cup.

Regardless, after the departures of influential players such as Mark van Bommel, Vogel, Park Ji-Sung, Lee Young-Pyo, and Wilfred Bouma after the 2004-05 season, PSV have moved to secure the services of players like Mika Väyrynen and Belgium midfielder Timmy Simons. With the addition of young players to bolster the squad such as Ismaïl Aissati and Ibrahim Afellay, PSV reached the knockout stage of the Champions League 2005–06 for a second running, having reached the semi-final stage in the Champions League season before. PSV ended again second in the group behind AC Milan. The team defeated the Italians in the home match with 1-0 in a tough group with Schalke 04 and Fenerbahçe. In the first knockout round, Lyon proved to be too strong over two matches. PSV again won the domestic title, but lost the cup final against archrivals Ajax, the last match of Hiddink as coach of the team.

Recent Years - (Wikipedia)

For the 2006–07 season, PSV contracted manager Ronald Koeman to succeed Hiddink. They also signed Ecuadorian player Edison Méndez and Mexican player Carlos Salcido after the 2006 FIFA World Cup, where they assisted their teams to the second round. Jan Wouters and Tonny Bruins Slot were brought in as the assistant-managers. André Ooijer and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink left the club after the start of the competition, and as replacements, Jan Kromkamp came from Liverpool and former Ajax striker Patrick Kluivert signed for a year. The top goal scorers of the season were Jefferson Farfán and Arouna Koné. The season saw the club building a gap with the other teams. The lead quickly dissipated in the 13 matches that followed. A draw of PSV at FC Utrecht in the penultimate round saw AZ and Ajax catching up. The three clubs were all on 72 points from 33 matches, with AZ on top due to goal difference. Ajax were second, PSV were third.

PSV won the Eredivisie for 2006–07 on 29 April with a 5-1 score, final day home victory against Vitesse Arnhem. AZ suffered a shocking 2-3 defeat away at SBV Excelsior, while Ajax and PSV both won. Therefore, the title was decided only by goal difference, with PSV's bigger winning margin proving decisive as they bettered Ajax's goal difference by just one goal (+50 compared with +49). This is known as the most exciting and closest title races in many years.

In the UEFA Champions League, PSV qualified for the knockout stage for the third time in a row, second behind Liverpool, leaving Bordeaux and Galatasaray behind. In the first knockout phase, PSV defeated Arsenal at home with 1-0 by a goal from Edison Méndez. In the return, PSV struggled and keyplayer Alex scored an own goal. However, he scored the unexpected 1-1, which was enough for PSV to reach the quarter-finals. Liverpool again was the opponent, but an injured PSV squad lost 0-4 on aggregate.

Although the club won the title, chairman Schuitema voiced criticism on coach Ronald Koeman after almost losing the championship, despite having a huge lead in December. But it was decided that Koeman would stay on for another year. New chairman Jan Reker replaced Schuitema.

After the season in which PSV won their 20th title, key players Phillip Cocu and Alex left the club. A difficult job for coach Koeman to fill their positions. They signed Mike Zonneveld, Kenneth Pérez and Danko Lazović. Danny Koevermans came from AZ after Arouna Koné eventually was sold to Sevilla FC. Also Ismaïl Aissati and Otman Bakkal came back from Twente after playing for that club on loan.

The team was disqualified from the Dutch Cup tournament, after fielding Manuel da Costa who was still suspended as a result of last year's tournament. PSV general manager called it "a huge blunder."

On 31 October 2007, Ronald Koeman agreed to be the new coach of Valencia CF, despite having a contract at PSV. The search for a new coach showed to be a struggle for the club and assistant coach Jan Wouters agreed to temporarily take over the job of head coach. Sef Vergoossen was contracted to be head coach until the end of the season, when Huub Stevens will take over.[4] On 31 December 2007, Kenneth Pérez left the club for Ajax, where he was bought from in the summer of the same year. Chairman Reker declared that it was Pérez own choice to leave the club.[5] On 26 February PSV midfielder John de Jong retired at the age of 30 after failing to recover from an injury he sustained during a training session in 2005.[6] Despite these personnel changes PSV went on to win their 21st title, making it the third time in the history of the league that a team won four championships in a row, after HVV Den Haag (1900, 1901, 1902, 1903) and PSV (1986, 1987, 1988, 1989).

On 23 August 2008, PSV won the Johan Cruijff schaal (Dutch Super Cup) 2-0, the goals scored by Danko Lazović and Dirk Marcellis against Feyenoord, PSV being the winner of the Eredivisie and Feyenoord won the KNVB Cup. PSV started well in the league, winning their first two games. However, the first Champions League match at home against Atlético Madrid was lost 0-3. This match was a sign of things to come. PSV were chanceless in their Champions League group, losing to Liverpool both home and away, losing away against Olympique de Marseille and losing home and away against Atlético Madrid. The only match won by PSV was the home game against Marseille. These poor results meant that PSV finished last in their group, behind Liverpool, Atlético Madrid, and Marseille, respectively. For the first time since 2002, PSV was eliminated from European football before the winter. AZ went on to win the national league and PSV finished fourth, their worst league performance since 1981 (curiously, the only other year in which AZ won the championship) when they finished fifth.

This disappointing league performance meant that for the first time since the 1996-1997 season PSV would not be playing in the Champions League, but in the newly named UEFA Europa League instead. Fred Rutten took over as head coach and had a very successful first half of the 2009-2010 season in which PSV didn't loose a single game in the national league, the national cup, and the Europa League. They finished the calendar year 2009 in the second spot in the national league behind FC Twente who also did also not loose a single domestic game in the season's first half. The second half is turning out to be less successful. PSV started drawing and loosing many league matches (2 draws and 2 defeats in the first 10 league matches of 2010) and was eliminated from the national cup and Europa League tournaments by Feyenoord and Hamburger SV respectively. As of March 14, 2010 PSV is second in the league trailing leaders FC Twente by 5 points with only 1 point lead on the third placed team AFC Ajax.

Goalkeepers

Andreas Isaksson, GK (6/10)- Swedish International Goalkeeper, and is regarded as your 1st choice keeper. For Dutch League he is very good and at only 27 years old, he will last you for at least 5 more years.

Cassio, GK (5/10)- At 22 years old, Cassio is a good standard keeper. He will be a great back-up for Isaksson and after 2 more years he will push Isaksson for his place. In fact on my save with PSV he managed a Brazil start!

Baas Roorda, GK (4/10)- Baas isn't as bad as he looks, and if you are unluckly enough to have injurys to both keepers, Baas will do a job for you. Yet, at 36 years old his stats will drop rapidly. His contract last only 1 more year, so you may aswell he keep him just incase and release him on a free.

Conclusion- A solid part of the PSV squad. The Goalkeeper area is definaltly strong enough for the league, but is questionable for europe. If you have high europeon hopes, then this may be an area you may want to improve upon. As top teams won't find it difficult beating your keepers.

Key Player- Andreas Isaksson

Youth Prospects- Jeroen Zoet

Recommended Ins: David Ospina (GK, OGC Nice- £8.75 Million)

Recommended Outs: None

Defenders

Dirk Marcellis, DRC (7/10)- Dirk is very solid for PSV and should be regarded as one of your top defenders. Also at the age of 21, he will be able to improve slightly. He may attract attention from clubs like Sevilla and Everton, but you should try to hang to him. Infact, I made him captain in my season at PSV!

Andre Ooijer, DRC (5/10)- Having left the Club for Blackburn for 3 seasons, Ooijer has returned to PSV. A very intelligent player and probaley has one the best mental stats for a Defender in the league. His downside is that he is old and slow. This disadvantage will cost a few goals in your campaign. So use him wisly!

Carlos Salcido, DLC (7/10)- The Mexican should be your first choice left back, although could also be regarded as your first choice center back too. He is a very good player and will consistantly put in good performances. He will also represent Mexico often.

Erik Pieters, DLC (6/10)- A 20 year old left back who can play center back also. He will play left back is you choose to use Salcido in the center of defence. He has very solid overall stas and deosn't seem to poccess any weakness. He wil attract attention, and you should ignore it unless it's a good offer. He will indeed develop, but not to a Champions League standard unfortunatly.

Maza Rodriguez, DC (5/10)- Maza is player that people usally get wrong when they start a game with PSV. In my books he isn't good enough. His mental stats let him down hugely, and for that reason he wil make mistakes. He is also 27, and therefore will not improve to any great extent. I sold him in my opening season in PSV for £4 Million and you shuld look to do the same.

Jagos Vukovic, DC (8/10)- A player on loan at PSV from Rad. The Serbain 21 years old and is a great prospect. He has a claus on his deal that PSV may purchase him for £1 Million. I would look to do this, as after 2 Seasons he will exceed any of defenders abilities. As for the first season he solid like Dirk Marcellis. At 6'6 feet tall, he is a big unit and will be very solid against aerail threats. He should be regarded as a back-up center back, with the possiblity of taking of pushing his way into the season.

Jan Kromkamp, DR/WBR (6/10)- Jan is a very solid player, at at 6'2 he isnt small either. Doesn't possess any real quality, yet deosn't possess any real weakness either. He will do well for you against any opposition, and will rarely make any errors on the ball. He should be pushing for the right back spot. You should also try to train him at left back to provide more cover for your team, as he will perform better then Pieters.

Stanislav Manolev, DR/WBR/AMR (6/10)- More of a midfielder than defender, but should be regarded as your first choice right back. He is good going forward and is fairly solid defensivly. Like Kromkamp, nothing specail about him, but he will he be very consistant and will peform well. Also at 23 years old, he deos have potencail for a long future for the club and you should look to keep him.

Conclusion- You have a lot of defenders in your squad and you have got cover for all areas. Yet, you do not poccess any Champions League standard players. In your first season you are in the Europa League, your defenders are good enough for you to progress thorugh the group stages, but will proaley find themselves being torn apart by teams like Aston Villa and Valencia. You will need to invest in this area if you wish to do well in europe.

Key Player- Carlos Salcido

Youth Prospects- Funso Ojo

Reccomended Ins: Dodo (DL/WBL, Corinthians- £3.1 Million) and Jagos Vukovic (DC, Rad - £1 Million)

Recommended Outs: Maza Rodriguez (DC - £3 Million)

Midfielders

Timmy Simmons, DC/DMC/MC (7/10)- Your Captain and also Belguims. He is very solid player, and will perform very well for you. He is good enough for the Europa League and also the Champoins League in my opinion. He 32 years old, and deosn't have many years left, but for at leats the next 2 seasons he will be very solid for you. You should look to play him in the big matches as he will never become nervous and make silly mistakes.

Orlando Engelaar, DMC/MC (6/10)- at 29 years old, Orlando is a good, strong midfielder. He is creative and has good passing ability, and is a good candidate for playmaker (Deep-Lying Playmaker). At 6'6 he will also dominate the center of midfield with his Strength. He should be competing for a starting 11 spot. Yet, he is slow and lacks Determination and Work-Rate, which is a potencail weak spit in your team. Look to play Engelaar often, but try and avoide playing him in Rival games. Never the less, he is a good footballer and will bag a few assist for you in your campaign.

Otam Bakkal, AMRC (6/10)- Otam is a solid player. He will attract intrest form many clubs including Man Utd. I sold him in my first season with PSV. I felt it was the right choice, but he is a good player and a 24 years old, he deos also have a future at the club. He possess a good technique and at 6'0 he is also a slight physical presence on the pitch.

Ibrahim Afellay, AMRLC (9/10)- The best footballer in your team. He is fast and has great technial abilty. He will be able to beat players and be a real spark in your team. He will attract attention form big clubs such as Valencia, Man Utd, Shakhtar and many top europeon teams. Look to keep him for 2 more seasons at least. Offer him a new contract at the start of each year to keep him happy. As after 2 years he really blossoms into a great player and you will be able to recive a lot of money from him, compared to the selling of him at the start of your first season.

Balas Dzsudzsak, AMLC (8/10)- A high quality footballer and also only 22 years old. Balas is a great player and will dominate the left flank for team. He is very creative and will spot a pass that many other players in the league can't. He is definatly a Champoins League standard footballer and will continue to improve for another 2 years. He wil alo atrratc attension from large clubs including AC Milan. You may also wish to offer him a contract to keep him happy. Try to keep him as he is a great player!

Nordin Amrabat, AMRLC, FC (7/10)- Also at 22 years old, Nordin has a great future ahead of him. A particularly skillful player and is a good choice for Playermaker. He will develop in a great player and will eventually attract a lot of attention. Nordin in my save was very loyal and I managed to keep him, and it paid of and he won the golden boot award. Equally able to play striker, Nordin will be able to score many goals for you, along with picking up a fair share of assists.

Conclsuon- A very strong area for your team. With a lot of young and exciting attacking minded midfielders, you will cause a lot of your oppents harm. Yet, your two defensive Midifeilders, Engelaar and Simmons aren't young. Their stats will start to drop soon and it is a matter you will have to address. Although for the first two seasons your midfield will dominate the league.

Key Player- Ibrahim Afellay

Youth Prospects- Stijin Wuytens

Recommended Ins: Anthony Annan (DMC, Rosenborg- £2.7 Million) and Sambou Yatabare (AMRC, Stade Malherbe Caen- £2 Million)

Reccomended Outs: Otam Bakkal (AMRC - 4 Million)

Attackers

Danko Lazovic, AMR/ST (7/10)- More of a Striker than Winger, Danko is a great player. He is very solid on all parts of his game and will be you first striker. Yet, at 26 you will be able to sell him for about £4 Million. This is what I did in my first save. He is a great player and I would keep him, but if you desire to do well in the Champoins League in the coming seasons, you will need a prolific goal scorer. Sadly, Danko isn't that. He is very good, but I would recommend you sell him while you can and bring in an exciting young striker.

Ola Toivonen, AM/FC (8/10)- A striker who can play in the AMC spot. Ola will represent his country after a year. He is also only 22 years old and will improve gradually. He is a strong- targetman tyor who possess a some skill too. A down-graded Berbatov is a way of describing him. After 2 years he will be ready to cause even the greatest defences problems and will become a qualty player.

Danny Koevermans, ST (6/10)- A club's favourate personnal, Danny is a great player. Yet, he is 30 and he is very similar to Ola Toivonen. I would look to sell Danny while you can. You will be able to make at least £2 Million out of him. It is a shame to let him go, and if you decide not to, then it isn't excatly a dissapointment. He has goals in him Danny and will do great for you for at least the 1st season. He is big and strong and will cause teams problems, but so can Ola Toivonen. I would let him go, and look to invest in other areas in your team.

Conclusion- An Area that is solid but does need a good look at. The obvous matter to address is that thier is no prolific goalscorer. Ola is a great player who will do great in the first season, but may only score 10 goals. In the second and third season Ola becomes a great goalscorer onces his stats improve. Danko and Danny are good players, but you should look to cash them in while you can. If so, you must but a striker! Nordin can play at Strker and will score a lot but he seems ot perform better in the Midfield.

Key Player- Ola Toivonen

Youth Prospects- Reimond Manco

Recommended Ins: Dentinho (AMRL, FC, Corinthians- £6 Million)

Recommended Outs: Danko Lazovic (AMR, ST - 4 Million) and Danny Koevermans (ST - £2 Million)

........

Overall Conclusion

The PSV squad is good. All areas of the team covered and you should be able to win the league with this squad. The main concern however is the youth. Ojo and Wuytens are good players already and will be able to play for your 1st team in the first season. Yet they don't particulary turn into world beaters. Manco is an exciting Attacker and his pace gives him a huge advantage. He is on loan for the first season, and the training at the club isn't great, therfore he deson't improve to any extent. He will develop into a good player, but again, no world beater. Try and sign some Youngsters who have good potencail. It will pay of after 5 years, as you will have no need to spend money on transfers as they are already at the club

Funso Ojo - Arguebly your best Youngster (DC/DMC/MC)

My signings was Dentinho, Yatabrare and Munoz. Sold Lazovic, Koevermanns, Bakkal and Rodriguez. Yatabare was my favourate player, but Dentinho boosted me in Europe and scored many goals.

I started with an update so Lazovic is gone allong others. I havn't brought anyone in as I am actually pretty happy with the squad, the toughest part has been trying to fit Engelaar, Hutchinson, Affelay and Dzudzak in the same team. At the moment I gone for an attacking 4-5-1, with Koevermans leading the line against the big teams, and Toivenen against smaller sides.

Ow okay then, I haven't tried it on the update... What will happen is as the year progress Ola Toivenen attributes will increase and he will force his way into the starting 11. He has every attribute and could be given the Complete Forward role. :)

I would think: Dzudzak (AML); Affelay (AMR); Engelaar (DMC)?

Just finished my first season at PSV and managed to bring the title home at the first attempt.

Table

Transfers

Formation

I'm far from happy with how the season went though. Without exaggeration we should have had the title won somewhere between the 25th and 28th game of the season. We had 7 away draws in a row at one stage with the only credible one being at Ajax. We had almost gut wrenching 1-0 home defeats at home to both Den Haag and Vittesse too and lost at home to Utrecht in the cup. In Europe we drew 4 group games which is highly annoying as these were the opposition. It took a last game win at home to Steaua to even get us out of the group. We did beat both Tolouse and Brugge in the knockout and eventually went out 5-2 on aggregate to Fiorentina, which is understandable at this stage.

These are coming in so far for next season and a right back and DM is my main priority once I know how much I have to spend, though Rafael from United and M'Villa are my desired pair.

Dzsudzsak is going after he's back from injury to whoever pays £13M+ for him, going to offer him out for £20M at first and see what offers come in. Toivonen, Engelaar and Salcido will all be offered out too and possibly Wuytens who spends half the time on the treatment table, which is no good to me as I need to keep a smallish squad due to the money we lose every month.

We had a board takeover, but unfortunately there was no sugar daddy, so we got lucky with an extra £5M being made available in November time, just before the bid.

Aims for next season is to certainly stamp out complacency, i've not been as annoyed by one of my teams for this reason in a long while. The other is to try and still be in the Champions league after Christmas.

Despite the moaning :D, it has been an enjoyable save at quite a few points so far. When we play well then the football is good to to watch.
