[FM12] The World Is Made OF Fail

I had a thread some time ago which came to an end when the game could no longer proceed. I haven't touched the game for a while now.

Unlike most people on this forum success is not a guaranteed (or likely) part of my FM experience. Be warned, up dates might be a little slow in coming.

The setup:

Database 12.2.0

Starting unemployed in July 2011

Nations Loaded

  • Argentina - Second Division
  • Australia - A-League
  • Brazil - Third Division
  • England - Blue Square North/South
  • France - CFA
  • Holland - Jupiler League
  • Italy - Serie C2
  • Portugal - Second Division
  • Russia - First Division
  • Spain - Second Division B
  • USA - MLS

So, let's this show started. How long before a job comes along? Being the start of the season in Europe it always seemed likely to be on another continent.

New Job

The wait wasn't long at all. By mid-August I found myself in Brazil. I'm signed until November 2012 at Rio Branco.

The city of Rio Branco is located in the far west of the nation and is capital of the state of Acre which borders Peru. Rio Branco play in the Brazillian Third Division, and with the season well underway I join with the side sitting mid-table in the first stage of the league. How Brazil's various competitions work will be one thing I need to understand at some stage. Cups seem to already be over, and there may not be many more games if we don't progress in the league.

The club has won numeros state league titles, and one north regional title, but never anything at the national level. RBFC have played as high as the second division, last doing so in 1991.

The club's home ground is the Arena da Floresta which has a capacity of approximately 10000, all seated. It is a far better looking venue than I would expect to be playing out of at this stage of my career.

9267_ori_arena_da_floresta.jpg

The starting position is both promising and tenuous. A lot of injuries means things could be tough, but we start from here. There isn't much time for players to get fit again as the stage is just eight matches.

ryJ1Y7eBgINqmFxKnWN8gPLG9yUsKMKEL6VEdP-uTDs=w718-h207-p-no

The top two in each group progress to the next stage, the bottom side is relegated.

How often updates occur will be variable, both in terms of real time and game time. In game time it will probably depend on crowded the schedule is. For the most part it will probably be once every two months in season, but that could be once a month if there are mid-week games and the like. I hope that means a couple of updates a week in real time, but there are no guarantees.

August - September 2011

Things didn't start well, playing group leaders Joinville. It became patently clear from the opening minutes that the defence is a shambles. Joinville's opening goal came courtesy of a pointless foul, lobbed slowly into the box to a completely unmarked man who headed home easily. Two more times Joinville made the defence look like imbeciles, only one of which was put away. Just as we looked to have luckily limited the damage we decided giving up a penalty from a no-danger circumstance was a good idea. A dismal game all round. While the defence was manifestly pathetic, the midfield hardly shone and when the ball actually got forward there was never any danger of producing a score.

The next two games were against lesser opposiiton than Joinville. That saved us form complete embarrassment. We were merely a little red-faced.

The second last game in the first phase was all-important. A loss would see us in the the relegation zone with the ladder leaders to play in the final game.

We managed a lead against stragglers Paysnadu, thanks to a snorter of a goal by midfielder Ze Marco. That lead was doubled, and we survived the season.

The final game was against Joinville again. With a very different looking side and some quite defensive tactics we managed to keep to 1 - 0 loss to finish the season.

Financially there are concerns. The wage budget is way overblown. The board is allowing ₤5.2k, the previous manager committed me to spending ₤6.3k per week. I have off-loaded one bad defender but there needs to be serious culling in the off-season. Whether I can get anybody in will be the test, but first I have find buyers for duds.

That is one colourful stand behind the far goal.

Right you are Nobby. Its pretty much empty on game day, unfortunately, so it would quite a sight.

October - December 2011 : Off Season part one

Rio Branco - Brazil Third Division

With the later stages of the league going on, the transfer window does not open until 1 January. Not may departures have been organised at this point and not many contracts are up, so wage wise things haven't improved. I hope they do, but have my doubts.

One defender is leaving, who was a fringe first team player but aged 36 was on the way out anyway. Another defneder left in September, who wasn;t costing much but even at tbhis level was an utter dud. He's dropped down to a tier below what is in the game.

And we have lined up a defensive midfielder/central midfielder to come in on loan with us paying no wages. If we had the cash I'd like to buy him, but a season for free is all we are likely to get from him.

We also extended a couple of loans, which means we should be no worse on field.

I will be scouring the free player pool to see if I can get some cheapies at roughly the same (or better) than my current guys and see if I can get rid of anyone on higher wages they might replace.

The season begins with a state league in early January, but I'm not too fussed about that unless the board say otherwise. I want to build a good squad for the Third Division when that starts up mid-year. Consequently, we'll hit the state league without much in the way of warm=up games under our belts.

It is my intention to add the continental league and national comps. In the months in this update the following competiitons finished:

January 2012

Rio Branco - Brazil Third Division

The year begins with the Acre State Championship. According to the bookies we started huge favourites for the meaningless competition. Despite being over the wage limit and having a large squad, the options are very limited. A lot of players are ineligible and I'm focrced to go with formations I am far from happy with.

We started poorly in the opening game but got the points. All three opening games were not those of a team who starts a competition at odds of 1/5 (1.20 for those who prefer decimal odds).

Fixtures-2012_01.jpg

Table-2012_02_01.jpg

On the injury front Juliano Cesar, who scored twice in the opening game, will be back by the middle of the month. How he comes back at his age will be the question.

Ze Marco is important to any vague outline of a structure we can put together and should be available for his first game of the season by the end of March.

I still need to get players in and out, but its not happening as my scout is finding nothing and there are no bites for the players I am trying to offload.

February 2012

Rio Branco - Brazil Third Division

The Acre State Chmapionship continued, and we started to stamp our authority on what is an embarrssingly low level of competition. The first round of the cup was also played, where we had drawn fellow Third Division team Campinense. That would probably be a fairer reflection on where we sit for the season.

We cruised through the state championship games, with a scare in only one game. In all honesty a third division team should probably not concede at all in the Acre state league. That means there is alot of work to do. That was confirmed in the cup. In the first leg we went quite defensive, hoping for a sneaky goal on the counter. For maybe 85 minutes of the match we held out well, but conceded two in quick succession early in the second half. That made the second leg, at home, much tougher. We did get 2-0 up in the home leg though, and looked the better side. However, Campinense managed one against the run of play to secure the tie and remove us from the cup at the first hurdle.

Fixtures-2012_02.jpg

Table-2012_03_01.jpg

Off field, things have not changed a real lot. I can't remove the clutter or afford to bring in anyone any better. Its going to be a hard ask to stay alive once the proper league kicks off. Ismael has been surprisingly handy, and has proven able to score from outside the box.

Elsewhere, the African Cup of Nations completed in February.

It seems to be youth contracts, but I haven't spotted anything in the competition rules that confirms that. Still, there's a bit of time left before the main competition starts so hopefully I'll find a way to fill the gaps.

I'm not finding much time to play the game is the bigger problem.

March 2012 - Brazil Third Division

At first glance it looks like a fairly successful month, but given the quality of the opposition its actually fairly disappointing. We had a full squad to choose from for the Nauas game, something that doesn't happen often. A few were tired and had a rest, but no injuries.

Fixtures-2012_03.jpg

Table-2012_04_01.jpg

We have just six matches to play in the Acre State, then the real competition begins and we get thumped. The transfer dadline has passed for international players but for Brazillians it is still open for a while yet. Not that I can afford to bring anyone without off-loading a few.

April 2012 - Brazil Third Division

Another month with very little to report. We wrapped up the Acre State Championship with plenty of games to go, as we should have. Just one game remains in that competition.

Fixtures-2012_04.jpg

The Third Division kicks off in late July. It looks like there's a break between the last state game on 5 May and then. Hopefully morale holds up and we get a few points early in the real league. We'll need them to stay away from relegation (and keep me in a job).

In case anyone thinks I might be under-estimating the Acre state league, the level of dominance by utter duds doesn't happen with a massive gulf between the main league and the state one.
