CovDan
I am not massively up on my specs, so need some help. I need a new Laptop for work and seeing as the FM09 Demo won't run on my old Mac or PC. I want to make sure it'll run on the laptop that I buy. Don't want to spend much more than £300 any ideas?!! Mike7077
Personally - and others may prove me wrong - I would guess that you'll be lucky to get a laptop that will be good enough for anything close to £300. You might conceivably be able to get by playing 2D. But I'm not sure. I set myself a budget of £500 and only found one laptop for that price that was what I was aiming for. But don't base your decision on my advice alone as I am not an expert. Let's see what others have to say.
elgreenio
if thats your budget get a PC
calvin
I think Mike might be right, you could be able to find a secondhand one that's capable of running the game in classic 2D, but a new one for around 300 might be a bit difficult to find. pelicanstuff
300 will, frankly, buy you a laptop either with crap specs or no build quality (or both). If you don't want to spend much, get a desktop. I would say the dell inspiron 1525 is very good value if you want a cheap laptop, but it only has onboard graphics (will run 3D but jerky at high detail). There is also a pretty good free delivery offer on the cheapest new Dell Studio at the moment that looks quite good: http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/laptop_studio_15?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs
CovDan
Any of these any good? These are a few I saw at the weekend. http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1169181209.1226319420@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccdladefjemmjedcflgceggdhhmdgmk.0&page=Product&fm=1&sm=0&tm=0&sku=109239&category_oid= http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1169181209.1226319420@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccdladefjemmjedcflgceggdhhmdgmk.0&page=Product&fm=1&sm=0&tm=0&sku=785391&category_oid=#productInformationSection http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1169181209.1226319420@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccdladefjemmjedcflgceggdhhmdgmk.0&page=Product&fm=1&sm=0&tm=0&sku=609409&category_oid=#productInformationSection http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1169181209.1226319420@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccdladefjemmjedcflgceggdhhmdgmk.0&page=Product&fm=1&sm=0&tm=0&sku=852760&category_oid=
CovDan
I could stretch to £400 like the ones above, which would you go for?
Bren_D
I could stretch to £400 like the ones above, which would you go for? Of the options you posted, the last one looks to be the most suitable for what you want. Edit: Assuming the graphics card is up to the job, I haven't a clue where the post with the list of compatible cards is.
CovDan
Excuse my ignorance but why is this more suitable than the other Toshiba? I checked the graphics cards and they're both supported.
Bren_D
Excuse my ignorance but why is this more suitable than the other Toshiba? I checked the graphics cards and they're both supported. I think it was the shared graphics that put me off the other one, but wait for someone with slightly better technical knowledge to cast an eye over the specs before ordering. craigy18181
Excuse my ignorance but why is this more suitable than the other Toshiba? I checked the graphics cards and they're both supported. I agree with Bren D mate, stay away from shared graphics card if you can.
CovDan
So the 1.9GHZ proccessor will be fine? I notice that the requirements state 2.0GHZ, I take it it won't make a huge difference. I gonna dash out in my lunch break and grab one from the shop you see!
LFCfan
When I read the system specs, I saw 2.0Ghz - not 2.0Ghz dual core or 2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo, so I would presume that a 1.9Ghz Core 2 duo would be fine.
pelicanstuff
Excuse my ignorance but why is this more suitable than the other Toshiba? I checked the graphics cards and they're both supported. I have a better feeling about the second toshiba than the first one as well. The other two are not worth your time considering. Have a look at the £429 dell I linked as well, those new Studios look quite well-built.
CovDan
I gonna buy one of these: http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1169181209.1226319420@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccdladefjemmjedcflgceggdhhmdgmk.0&page=Product&fm=1&sm=0&tm=0&sku=857578&category_oid=#productInformationSection or http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1169181209.1226319420@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccdladefjemmjedcflgceggdhhmdgmk.0&page=Product&fm=1&sm=0&tm=0&sku=852760&category_oid= Which? The inspiron is a better all-round machine IMO but the graphics are not great. They will run 3D but not smoothly at high detail. Once again, I reckon you should look at the left hand column in this link. http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/laptop_studio_15?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs It is £30 more but I feel it is a superior machine. pelicanstuff
The Toshiba. The extra gb of memory will come in handy for FM Personally I think anything over 2 Gig doesn't make that much difference unless you have loads of other stuff running at the same time. I have 2 gig and never max out my physical memory. A fast hard drive makes far more difference than that extra gig, but those are expensive.
CovDan
Thanks for all your help guys! I'll let you know how I get on. Gonna start up my usual Coventry City game, Lol. Wish me luck!!!
pelicanstuff
Couple of other options - this is a pretty good deal but the graphics will again be not so good for high detail setting in 3D: http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.204-6256.aspx This is a pretty cool offer - again it has shared graphics but they are the best shared graphics you can get: http://www.acerdirect.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_5735Z_Laptop_LX.AU50Y.004/version.asp?refsource=adfroogle This looks like it might be nice: http://www.morecomputers.com/extra.asp?pn=X50GL-AP008E&referer=Froogle
