Signing a big name because they are a good deal?

Playing my second season with Man Utd and starting to feel the pinch in the pockets. Pato's contract was up in 6 months and without needing him I signed him up. Does anyone else do this if given the chance? i.e. Signing a big name you don't need because they are free or offered on the cheap?

I do it all the time. If they are good enough, they will break their way into the first team, otherwise they will leave as soon as possible and I will get on them definitely more than I've spent

I never sign big names, as I like to work with youngsters and build them up. Saves a ton on wages as well, and makes sure I can always sell my players in the end.

How easy is it to sell? Just had to give Torres a 2 year deal at 30 on 110k a week and dont need him so want to sell for around 10m , he is worth 15 but dont want to upset and not be able to sell

It all depends on the team your playing with. When, like in your case, playing Man. Utd. it's easier to say no. But whilst playing on a somewhat lower level (like me with Feyenoord, a top Eredivisie team). It's necessary to get as much of these players as possible to stable your financial situation (seller them later on), get a higher chance in the champoins league and tutor young players. I've got for example van der Vaart, de Jong, Robinho, Toivonen, Esposito and Holtby on frees. Not all regular 1st team players now, but all of them make a certain contribution to the club which makes them worth the wage.
