Network games

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I have finally persuaded a mate to update to FM10, and we probably want to set up a network game at some point...

I've never done one before, so could someone explain how it works?

Can we both play in the same league with different clubs? How does it work when you play each other?

Cheers

There is the online forums which explain it. But if your wondering how to set it up, go to the football manager manual, and go to the online section. It is really simple, and really enjoyable. Just be prepared to have a lot of waiting around and twidling your thumbs waiting for your friends to finish his press conference etc. and maybe get a contract phone or landline, as you may have to phone him up once in a while to increase pressure, ask him why he is taking so long etc.

First, you must go to preferences -> network and tick 'run as server'. Then you can either load any savegame or start a new game the same way you start a singleplayer game. The other computer can join your game via 'join network game'.

Then you and your mate can simultaneously manage your clubs on the same day. Once one of you presses continue, the other one will have a certain amount of time (you can set that in the network options) before the game forces continue. On matchdays you can watch your games simultaneously. If you play against each other, you will logically see the game on both screens.

I tried the network mode just some days ago with a friend and it is really better and not so complicated as I thought it would be. The only thing is that a season takes a looong time in FM and we somehow had to end our session after 8 hours and had only advanced to the second matchday.

As suggested, the sticky threads at the top of the FM Online forum should help but there is help from the FAQ thread:

How to setup a network game

The following guide provides instructions for creating a game with multiple players across a network.

In order to create a network game allowing multiple players to play against one another, one member must act as the host.

Creating a game (Host):

-Select Preferences

-Select Network

-Enter a name for Server Name

* A password is optional

-Select Run as Server

-Click Confirm

-Start a New Game

-Create a new manager profile and select a team to manage

-Click on Save As… to save your process

Joining a game (Client)

After the host has created a game, other players, referred to as clients, can attempt to join the network game.

To join the network game the client/s will need to follow the instructions outlined below:

- Select Join Network Game

- Select Join Other Server

This step requires the IP Address of the host.

To identify the IP Address of a computer follow the instructions below:

Windows PC:

·Click the Start menu

·Select Programs

·Select Accessories

·Select Command Prompt

·Type ipconfig

·Press Enter

Apple Macintosh:

·Click on System Preferences

·Select Network

·Select active connection

- Enter the IP Address of Host

- Click Ok

- Once connected you will be prompted to add a manager profile:

- Click on FM

- Select Add New Manager

- Create a new manager profile and select a team to manage

The network game should now be established which can be confirmed by viewing the staff page from the information section for the club managed either by the host or client.
