Any update on this @SRL88? This was the only save I could find that started in the same league that I have done. I see you have had a similarly productive opening season. I'm intrigued.

    Hello mate

I’ve been exceptionally busy at work with the lead up to Christmas. I work shifts, and been doing 12hr days on top of that, six days a week, so I haven’t really had the time.

Also pretty knackered when I have had the time. I will get back into it, it’s just a case of when I get chance.

    Manager Thoughts

All things considered, I am pretty pleased with our start to the campaign.

We didn't get out of the blocks particularly well as we struggled in defeat to fellow promoted side FC Bourg. It took us the best part of 60 minutes to get going, by which point it was too late. We should have taken all three points against Paris, especially as they fell down to ten-men in the first half, but we laboured and didn't make much of an effect in their final third.

We finally got off and running with a win at home to Rodez. We left it late, when our Captain Marvel stepped up and hammered home a 25-yard free-kick in stoppage time to give us a huge three points. A poor performance followed at Metz, before we followed a very similar pattern against Valenciennes. Heading into stoppage time level, Matthieu Ezikian stepped up from 20+ yards and hammered home another free-kick before we sealed the game a couple minutes later.

A really pleasing pre-season with some standout performances, and a lot to be optimistic about as our confidence from last season has carried into the pre-season.

We did start pre-season sluggishly though. Against Monaco's second team we struggled to have any effect on the game, but somehow found a way to an undeserved win. We looked to ease to a win against a potential former rivals second team in Lyon. Leading 3-0, we completely blew it as it finished in a draw. The rest of pre-season was easy and we produced some comprehensive wins.

    Transfers

We made moves in both directions, but those incoming are obviously more important to us as we head into the new campaign.

    ---

Setgui Karamoko - A solid defensive signing as we made a real effort to improve our backline going into what could be a tough campaign

Lamine Ghezali - Not shown on our incoming signings as we had him on loan last season, but he put in some solid performances, and in an effort to give depth to our squad, I felt it a no-brainer

Tom Rapnouil - He gives us a different alternative in the middle of the park. Not the best physically, but he has very good vision and could unlock a defence or two

Ismaila Simpara - A solid option for us at the back. Probably more a squad player, but depth nonetheless

Josue Homawoo - Probably my favourite of the three central defenders brought in this summer. Solid enough centre back for the level we're at

Corentin Jacob - On loan with us last season and an absolute must transfer. We coughed up a big fee (for us) as we smashed our previous transfer record of zero to bring him in

Sebastian Buch - The standout signing for sure! He is on loan and is such a good fit for our system. His loan can be made permanent as we have an optional fee of £400k

Great Job. Keep up with the Free Transfers if possible so as to NOT use the Transfer Funds, because your club can't really afford it.

Love to see you do well, Just don't beat Clermont too badly!

    Cheers :)

We have made one signing for cash so far. The rest are either loans or frees, so nothing too bad.

    SRL88's Career - Sporting Club Lyon - Season Preview - 2021/22

    Board Expectations

Ligue 2: Fight bravely against Relegation

Coupe de France: Reach the Ninth Round

    ---

    My Expectations

Ligue 2: Pretty much as above. I would be daft to think otherwise. We are definitely way ahead of schedule and not ready for this level, but we will go for it nonetheless

Coupe de France: We enter in the eighth, so I'm sure we can meet the boards expectations

    ---

    Budgets

    Transfer: £1.3m

    Wage: £27,170 (currently spending £25,128 p/w)

Balance: -£54,966 (+602,059 since end of last season)

    Projected Balance: £1.43m

    ---

On a side note, I have no answer to the Coupe de France. There is no projection yet as to how the board want us to perform, and we weren't in it last season. Time will tell on it I guess...

    SRL88's Career - Sporting Club Lyon - Season Review - 2020/21

Championnat National1st - Promoted as Champions

Results (Aug - Dec) - Results (Jan - May)

A fantastic overall performance in the league, easily finishing higher than our media prediction of 7th, and surpassing all expectations. Only having the league and no cup competition to distract us helped massively, but our consistent form throughout the campaign was the biggest factor. Even though the league ended up being comfortable, comparing our form with the chasing pack, they just couldn't keep up with the pace we set.

    Squad

    Overall Best XI

    Transfers - Merchandise/Sponsorship - Finances

We operated with a really small squad this year and got lucky with injuries, but it was still up to the players to step up. They did just that, and even some of the average ratings are really solid. Many 7+ averages across the squad. I was also happy with the goals return we got throughout the team. Only two players breaking ten goals, but a lot chipped in from elsewhere.

Going forward, we definitely need strength in depth and to add quality throughout in order to compete at a higher level. Thanks to the transfer budget given (as shown in a prior post), I think we can do just that.

    ---

    Player of the Season

1st Matthieu Ezikian - Captain Fantastic, record appearance holder, and easily our top assister this season. He was phenomenal all over the pitch, leading by example. He even managed to break into the Armenia team this season. Absolute legend.

2nd Jonathan Rivas - I think it would be rude not to give recognition to the man who's goals led the way. 17 on the way to the title was a good return, with an excellent purple patch through February and March.

3rd - Nathan Dekoke - A player who really stood out in a time when I was struggling to think of where to play certain players. A makeshift centre half, he became our number one choice at the back in an excellent campaign.

    Next Season

The obvious aim is survival. I know it's going to be tough, very tough in fact, but it has to be the aim! Strengthening the squad along the way is also vitally important.

Ligue 2 next - this is good. I think Rey could end up being talented if he improves right.

We will definitely be looking to develop them both. Even if it’s just to cash in.

A sensational end to the season that not only saw us promoted, and win the league, but do so in extremely comfortable fashion.

After snatching a draw at home to Bastia in a game we absolutely dominated, we went on a fantastic run towards the title. We comfortably beat Boulogne away from home, the two goals we conceded coming in the final five minutes (frustratingly), before a huge win away to Concameau which handed us the title. From there on it was about seeing the games through and the players seemed to have a pressure lifted as we eased past opponents.

Three comfortable wins followed before a draw finished off the season at home, which saw us lift the trophy.

Although it looks a frustrating month on paper somewhat, it's one that pushes us ever closer to that line, especially given results from our main rivals.

We really made hard work of things to start off the month against FC Bourg. Trailing at the break, we put in a sensational second half performance to turn the game on it's head. We conceded in stoppage time, but held on for the three points. Trailing again against QRM, we turned another game around to lead. Once again though, we couldn't see stoppage time through, this time the goal conceding meaning we had to settle for a point.

That tightened the race up a little between ourselves and Le Mans. Going into the game against them, we knew we needed to avoid defeat or the race could be blown wide open. We did it again though, saving our best for our rivals. An early goal putting us on the way in what a dominating performance, just lacking goals to seal our display.
