I am no expert on this subject of the Hungarian sides of the 50's but saw a few clips the other day of Puskas and wanted to put my take on the tactic they used. In terms of shape it is not the easiest as most videos I could find were just clips of the goals, but doing a bit more work scouring the internet I found some very handy guides to give me a rough idea on the shape they played.
This really isn't for the faint hearted , you will get hit on the counter a lot and I mean a lot. However, in lots of games it was a joy to watch the passing and moving off the ball and it is one of the few setups I have created where the player through on goal actually seems to look for the pass rather than scoring (and no they didn't have that trait )
Although it seems from some of the articles I browsed through, that they used the defence in the layout below , In terms of FM23 and I have tested this but it wasn't as reckless and fun a 3 CB system works much better. This is mainly dues to the Full Backs naturally holding there shape out wide, yes you can try and deter that a little with a IWB(de) but again it wasn't as creative going forward as the full backs just seem to lump it forward rather retaining possession.
Moving onto the midfield , I tried lots of different variations such as using Wide Midfielders instead of wingers but they just lacked that creative spark needed in this tactic. The two Shadow Strikers work wonders , I had an 18y/o Norwegian (not a wonderkid but decent nonetheless) score 30 goals from the left side of the two AMC positions. The main creative pivot actually comes from the Central Midfielder on Attack, whether a Roaming Playmaker would work better is another story entirely as I think you would lose the attacking potency.
In conclusion , you need nerves of steel to use this tactic but in the end it is just a bit of fun and creates so many chances as shown below.
Just a few of the games I have played , I have used it a lot more since this.
As you can see below, it can be very effective.
Please feel free to carry on the discussion below , I would like to hear other peoples interpretations of this tactic or other old team tactics. Please don't take this too seriously it is just my own personal setup for the tactic they used.
