I've started a save at West Ham, Steve Potts (U23 assistant) doesn't not show in the list of coaches when assigning their training responsibilties, yet, when you click on the U23 squad coaching team overview he is there.
It is the same with the U18 assistant Mark Phillips.

MIddlesbrough have allowed me to take my national a course, and West Ham miraculously stayed up winning all three of their final games.

The advice and persistence paid off.
Just wondering if I will be kept on though, don't you have to require a continental pro licence to manage in the Premier League?
The heart strings might be pulled though as my beloved Hammers look likely to head the opposite way.
At the hands of the Strachan clan, Gordon (manager), Gavin (assistant), Craig (chief scout), West Ham suffered 12 defeats in 14 games. A run of 3 wins and 2 draws in the last 5 games has given a slim hope of survival, but still sit second bottom, six points adrift and only three games left.

To be honest I mainly use a BPD at DC(L).
Sometimes I use the NCB depending on how the opposition are playing, or when we are 2-0 up with 15-20 minutes left.
Possession doesn't seem to be affected, I'm still having 50%+ per game.

First up a thanks to @Experienced Defender, @summatsupeer, @pheelf, @TEK1 for the advice.
I ended up taking a couple of days out and played Cricket Captain, if only SI could come up with their own cricket simulation! Anyway after a couple of days I decided to go back to when my save was in the winter break and see if I could give the tactics another chance.
Started going with a fluid tactic, which was working pretty well, but as results became more consistent and we started getting up there with the play-off contenders I opted to go back to a flexible set up.
With the fluid set up I had the IW(L) on support.
Results have eventually become more consistent even though I was back in front of the board persuading them to give me more time at the end of January after the 0-3 defeat at Cardiff, and run of two defeats and a draw in four games.
With seven games remaining we're not only up in the expected play-off positions but also in with a shout of winning the league, and my job status is now very secure.

I always try and interact with my players.
On a monthly basis I will praise their conduct, training performance if over 7.50, and player performance if over 7.00 for the last five appearances. If the training is below 7.00 or performance below 6.50 I'll have a few assertive words with those players. On a game by game basis, again I'll praise a good performance, 7.00+, and a "must do better" chat if the performance was 6.40 or below.
The managerial support is now 'very good' with 15 of the 27 players in the squad supporting myself, but still some work to do on that front.
I do believe only holding a National B licence and coaching attributes that aren't the greatest caused the team in not having much faith in me, but the recent upturn has started to persuade them I'm the man for the job.

Errrrr, didn't go to plan.
Got in four friendlies against decent opposition, all wins, the change in the set up was looking like it was going to work.
The World Cup finished and the league season resumed on Boxing Day 2022 away at second bottom Preston. Went 1-0 down against the run of play, equalised from a corner, then 3-1 down by 55 minutes. We pulled a late goal back but fell to defeat.
With Middlesbrough sitting 14th and 10 points off the play offs enough was enough for the board.
Anyway on to pastures new. A position is available at League 2 Salford, think I might hold out for a League 1 job and try to work my way back up.

I've definatly been over complicating things and looking at what my players best roles are rather than what suits the system.
Had a think back to the tactics I used in my season at Crewe.
The target man scored over 20 goals in that season. The advanced playmaker and mezzala weighed in with goals as well.

Your out-of-possession instructions may turn out to be a bit more aggressive than necessary. You'll know if that's the case when you test the tactic anyway.
I am not sure that the "take long kicks" manner of keeper distribution is the best idea, but I guess you have some special reason for using it.

To while away the time whilst I'm under 12 weeks of coronavirus quarantine I've taken the opportunity to get stuck into a career save I had started a while ago. Anyway, after a few seasons of reasonable success, and working my way up through the English divisions I've hit a brick wall and have spent half of the 2022-23 season struggling in the Championship with Middlesbrough.
Overview
I started out in the National League South with Braintree Town, I thought I'd start the game having to earn my coaching badges and started with a National C licence. The 2019-20 season was gong pretty well with Braintree up in the play off spots, the Yeovil job came available and off I went to a middle of the table Conference National team. Second season we won the Conference National, but Yeovil wouldn't allow myself to progress my coaching ability. Pre season the Crewe job became available so start of the third season and my third team. Crewe allowed me to gain my National B badge, and the 2021-22 season went very well. A second placed finish in League 2 with record number of wins and points haul for Crewe, also, a League 2 Manager of the Year award for myself. Crewe wouldn't allow me to go to the next level coaching wise, so an approach by Middlesbrough was taken up after Big Sam had retired. A successful interview saw myself given the role of Boro's new manager with the expectation of finishing in the play offs.
Things haven't been going great, 28 points from 21 games and mid table has my job as under pressure. The board called me for a meeting and a stay of execution has been granted as we enter a mid season break for the 2022 World Cup. A month or so before hand some of the playing staff had requested a meeting about poor results and I'm struggling to win them round, something I've never had a problem with at my previous clubs.
My coaching attributes and badge aren't great, maybe the players don't believe I'm ready to coach in the Championship!
Tactics
At Braintree and Yeovil I used a 4-4-2, once I arrived at Crewe I changed to the 4-1-4-1, a target man(s) up top, advanced playmaker AMR, inverted winger/inside forward AML, and a combination of DLP-s (MCL), Mez-a (MCR) and anchor man (DMC). After assessing the players available at Middlesbrough I've gone with the 4-1-4-1 again.
In the team report on strengths and weaknesses we are strong in teamwork, work rate, natural fitness, stamina and determination so I'm employing a counter press and prevent short GK distibution. Do you reckon the More Urgent Press under Out of Possession is too much?
I'm keeping my passing and dribbling on balanced as I prefer to deal with those issues in individual player instructions. Also going for Take Long Kicks as my keepers distribution is good, will adapt on a game by game basis if the opposition are playing defensively.

Struggling for goals from Roberts and Fletcher. Fletcher plays as the Pressing Forward, if Roberts starts he plays as a Complete Forward. Ellis Wiloughby is already a championship standard player and may get the nod when the season gets back underway.
Any suggestions on what I could change?

The target man would lay off the ball to either the left winger or centre mids to provide a cross or through ball. The default PI 'Moves Into Channels' would find him the space, and where he comes in very useful in a direct passing game is in the discription 'His secondary role is to chase down misplaced through balls or clearances from deep'.

In the National League while I was managing Yeovil I paired an AF with a TM(s) worked very well. The AF was a young pacey prospect find pockets of space to run at, or, get beyond the opposition defence. He would waste a lot of chances, but I put that down to being raw and his attributes needing developing, he did score about 15 goals in that season.
We lined up like this.

Mentality: Positive, which would change to attacking against teams struggling in the bottom 5.
In Possession: More direct passing, also added Pass Into Space at home (long pitch) or away on ground with bigger than standard size.
In Transition: Regroup and Distribute Quickly.
Out Of Possession: Lower Line of Engagement.
Also had a second tactic that was pretty much the same roles and duties but some were a bit more conservative. Also aimed to play on the counter.
Obviously I tried to set it up in way that suited my team, but it probably wouldn't suit your team. Just trying to give some idea on how I got AF working in a 4-4-2.

If my two main strikers can play to their potential I can mix it up a bit. My first choice is naturally a pressing forward, so will use him in this role if the centre backs are not the quickest or their passing, first touch or composure isn't great. He can also play as a deep lying forward, so will go with this against defences where I get no height or pace advantage. My second choice striker is a pretty tall target man who is decent in the air, so he'll come in if we are trying to exploit an aerial advantage.

The player I have at left back is naturally a CWB, so I will change it to WB(s) in the left back position. I'll make the right back a IWB(s) as I thought the right hand side was too open.
Style wise the board want me to play attacking football, but I don't want gung-ho as we're expected to finish mid table, so I was looking at a balanced/positive mentality with standard/slightly more direct passing. If the opposition are using a wing back or two maybe add pass into space. In transition regroup.
Going to look to use a slightly more conservative set up as a second tactic, cautious/balanced mentality, standard/more direct passing, pass into space. In transition regroup and counter. Out Of Possession lower line of engagement.

Just going into my third season (2021-22) and at my third club.
Started at Braintree and were in the play-off positions in the National League South before jumping ship in January to Yeovil in the National League. Guided Yeovil to the National League title in the 2020-21 but resigned during the summer as the chairman wouldn't allow myself to go on a coaching course. The Crewe job was available in League 2, and after a successful interview I've taken the job.
During my time at Braintree and Yeovil I employed a 4-4-2 that worked well, but having analysed my squad at Crewe I feel in need to go with a 4-1-4-1. I'm not going to get much chance until the weekend to sit down in some detail and get through pre-season.
Anyway I would appreciate some feedback on the 4-1-4-1 I'm looking to use.

The concerns I have are around the IF(a) and PF(a). The IF doesn't have the creative attributes to be on a support duty, but his finishing and attacking attributes are quite decent. Would it be better to change the PF to a support duty?
Also the MEZ on attack with the DR/FB(a), DR/FB(s) instead?
Lastly the CM(s), what about a DLP(s) instead?

Signed Connor Stanley on a free start of my second season for Yeovil Town.
Don't have the stats to hand but Stanley has been very good for my Yeovil side playing as a right winger (MR). Myles Hippolyte has been exceptional on the left wing as well, 10 goals and 9 assists after 24 National League games.

Might be jumping the gun with this lad.
Devon Arnold of Yeovil Town looks an excellent prospect for the Vanarama leagues.
When I arrived at Yeovil from Braintree he was already out on loan at Truro, where he scored 12 goals in 18 appearances for the Southern League Premier outfit. For the start of 2020/21 the wage budget needed to be cut so, for me, he would feature in the first team. So far 9 goals in 9 appearances.
Report has him as operating at Vanarama National level, with the potential to be a League Two striker.
A small fast striker with decent finishing, first touch needs to be improved but nonetheless looks an excellent prospect in the Vanarama's - League 2.

First things first, if you want to go with the 4-2-3-1 tiki-taka on attack duty I'd scrap all your TI's a make it more simple.
In Possession - Shorter Passing and Play Out Of Defence will be enough.
In Transition - Take Long Kicks with Play Out Of Defence??? Again drop all the TIs you have for In Transition apart from maybe Counter Press, but don't use with More Urgent Pressing. Use one or the other, using both is overkill.
Out Of Possession - Once again drop all TIs for this section, only use Lower Line Of Engagement to give space to the AF, it also compacts the middle third of the pitch by not allowing the opposition space in midfield. If the oppo decide to play long balls maybe drop your defensive line. If you want to pressure the opposition defence maybe High LOE with a standard defensive line, or higher defensive line.
AS for roles and duties:-
Maybe use a Sweeper Keeper (D).
Right Flank - WB(A) with a W(A)?
Left Flank - IF(S) will drift into the space occupied by your APM(S).
Maybe use a FB(S) on the right with the winger on a support duty. On the left look to get the IF penetrate the penalty box with an attack duty and the left defender WB(S).
In central defence go with the covering centre back on the right to cover the wing back.
Central midfield Mezzala or Box to Box on the right, Deep Lying Playmaker(D) on the left. Attacking Mid (S) in the AM position.
Its not a definate title winning setup but is more simple.

I normally get used to new versions of the game by doing a pre-season and a few months with my team West Ham. Normally by then a league data pack for the German lower leagues is available so I then dive in with FC St. Pauli.
This year I fancied something a bit different so have used FCSP to get used to the game, but this time I've decided to start unemployed in England and picked up the Braintree job in National League South. Got off to a good start in my save and had a striker called Femi Akinwande tearing it up. I then took a look at the squad and noticed that a number of players including Akinwande had recently left the club, so I decided to use the editor to put those players at their current club and bring in those who had joined since FM20s release.
I've started unemployed again and once again picked up the Braintree job. The squad is a bit thin in midfield and no star striker up front anymore, just young, bang average National South strikers and lot of non-contract players. Currently still in pre season, but looking to get my teeth into this save when time allows.

One thing I've noticed is there are quite a few regens at the start of the game that are very promising, especially in Germany.
Signed up four or five 15 years olds for my FCSP U19s. One not far away from promotion to the u23s/fringe first team, only problem, he can't play for either side until he is 17.

I want to do a long term save in Germany, and need a challenge, so decided to start with St. Pauli. A team i always have wanted to manage om FM, but havent until now. Will update after the season.

My go to team upon new releases of FM, a few promising youngsters, some good experienced players, sprinkled with a few names that had promising youth careers but never quite made it.
Fliting between using a 4-2-3-1and 4-1-4-1.
Buballa having a great first half to the season as a wing back, Neudecker establishing a place in central midfield as a DLP. When fit Moller-Daehli getting assists and goals, and Miyaichi performing the same. The surprise for me is Henk Veerman up front, a 6ft 6in target man with no more than average heading stats, have him playing as PF(S/A), 11 goals in the first half of the season.
Currently sitting 4th at the winter break, no signings made so far, well three Stoke players who have been put in the U23 team. Some deadwood look to be leaving during January, Hornschuh, Allagui and Schneider.
