  1. Flair is way too low for any attacking roles. With that Bravery and Agression he can a be a force in midfield. Those Decisions are amazing too, and they are super important for any player, but mostly for those in midfield. He also has good passing and decent dribbling, so he can be quite a flexible player. I don't like this guy as a wing back, as he is not that fast, has crap crossing and again, flair is very important for attacking players.

For me, thats a DLP on defend or a Half Back in the DM strata in a possession based system. His purpose will be to simply recycle possesion in offence, spotting the open team mates and spaces, without doing anything fancy. In defence, he will be protecting the backline as he has decent defending attributes. In more aggressive setups, BWM is a great option, just train his strenght and he will be a pitbull.

  2. Tactics in previous FMs work very differently in FM 20. I play FM 18 and on that game I can tell you a top CB makes a difference. But since you don't have much choice with the National team, I suggest to just build a tactic that plays to your strenghts. If you have fast players, drop deep and use the pace. If you have more technical players, push the line of defence high and try to control games. In both ways you will concede goals because of the weak defence, it's just the way it is.

That being said, if I had a poor defence, I would try to give it extra protection without sacrificing too much attacking power. I find that a Half Back really helps defenders and posession at the same time. DLP on defend is great in the DM strata, it's a bit more risky than the HB, but can still work with the right player. Make sure that you have one more midfielder either as a Ball winning midfielder or a Box to Box. Both help the defence well, the latter though will support greatly attacks too.

You can also try 3 at the back. The extra man really helps, but to be effective on the offence you need top attacking players to compensate the one man less going forward. In real world football teams use the CBs to create overloads by pushing them very high, but in FM that is not really possible.

    Good luck!

  3. Obviously you can just holiday 10 seasons, but that's annoying. Here is a suggestion if you want to make things a bit less boring until you reach the 2030 point you're going for - Play as a National manager. You'll only have 5 to 10 games a year and you can holiday in between the matches. It will take a bit longer, but you can have some fun playing some World Cups. When you reach your desired year, make a savepoint and go from there.

Or maybe you can ask someone who is already in a long-term save to give you the file. It can add quite the interesting element to your future save. And finally you can just start a new game with fake players right off the bat.

  4. Something really cool happened in a recent game(FM 18) and I wanted to mention it. I'm currently playing with Arsenal and I'm just having fun, winning things and destroying Man Utd, you know, the usual stuff. I just played a game against Huddersfield and I had to rotate the squad as they were tired after a tough away game against Lyon in the CL. I had to rest De Bruyne and since Savic was injured, I decided to rely on Joe Willock to perform the Box-to-Box position for this game. He is not up to par with the rest of the squad, but he has potential and decent Team Work and Work Rate - both at 13.

So, what happened was, in the above mentioned game, we were getting attacked and Mustafi(who is a beast for me btw) decided to go ahead and press very high alongside Ramsey, leaving loads of space behind him. Their strikers run into the space immidietely and the pass got through, but Willock super intelligently took Mustafi's place in defence and intercepted it with ease.

I have never, ever seen such intelligent play in defence in FM for all my years playing the game. Even the DLP who normally has very high anticipation doesn't do this, let alone a young kid playing way further up. This is why I wanted to mention it, as it was surreal. It sounds simple, but to me it was incredible to watch. Just another highlight of this incredible masterpiece by Ö-zil to the Arsenal!

Some more takeaways from my recent save:

    - You don't need a F9 to use as F9. I use Aubameyang and he scored 40+ goals and had 20+ assists last season. In the cups, I played Nketiah who is very similar in terms of attributes to Auba and he did very well too. With Valencia Zaza performed similarly and he is a totally different player than those two, so as long as the striker is generally good, it can work very well.

    - This tactic can carry weaker players. For example, I gave youngster Marc Bola(LB), who never ever becomes a premierleague player a run in the team because of injuries, and he was super stable. The fact that the whole team defends as a unit really helps youngsters, so this tactic is perfect for developing youth players.

    - The DLP is perfect in attack and defence. Normally, players in the DM strata don't contribute much in offence. But here the DLP not only is super helpful in defence, he also scores goals from distance and even finds himself in the box from time to time. I used a 32 year old Fabregas who can barely run last season and he scored a few goals and helped us win the title. This season I loaned him out to Feyanoord as he was just a one season experiment for good old times and he is dreadful in the much weaker Eredivise. But for me he was brilliant, which just shows again how this tactic can bring the best out of your players.

    - Keepers often get decent ratings because they make lots of passes. Same goes for the BPDs as well. I know some people hate it that GKs don't get good ratings on FM, so I though I would mention it.

    - It's a proper Plug and Play if you know what you're doing. By that I mean - unless you're clueless about football and FM, you can use it with any team as long as you pick the right type of players and manage them properly. It also does not require any tinkering, unless you want to. I personally hate "retain possession" so I removed it. Still plays amazing. Sometimes I change roles and even positions when needed, but generally I leave it as is regardless of the opposition.

    - Because the whole team plays as a unit, you can use lesser players. In the cups I like to rotate A LOT. I just beat a full fledged Man Utd side with Dybala, Sanchez and all their best players with my reserves and youth. I did not just beat them, I completely shut them down for the whole 90. Sure, we didn't had as many chances as normal, but we still won 2:0.

So yeah, this is definately my new favourite tactics in all of FM, slightly nudging the Wenger Invincibles. After a few seasons I might try out the 3-6-1 version, just to see how it compares to this masterpiece. Oh crap, this was going to be a short post.. oh well.

I urge anybody who is bored with FM currently or wants to see his team play wonderful winning football to load up FM 18 and give this a try if you haven't already. You wont regret it!

Start with sunday league,no badges. Also, I never play with real players. Because I am never gonna be a football manager irl :(

Why not? If you really want it bad, you should go for it. You can get started in many ways. Sure it's really hard, but you should do everything you can to make it a reality!

    On topic :

My rules are flexible, as I like to try out different stuff. But when I'm going for realistic and challenging save(as much as the easy AI allows it), I do this:

    - No player search. I only sign players that my scouts recommend. I am allowed to shortlist them however if they've been recommended before and I can use the shortlist when I need to.

    - No exploits - anything that is unrealistic and potentially exploiting the AI could ruin a save for me, so I avoid it as best as I can. For example - using the Adjust Budget option. I may only use it when it's a really small difference and it makes sense. But otherwise I cannot touch it. Buying players outside of transfer windows. I only jump in if the AI makes a bid first. Otherwise they don't compete even if they want the player. I've gotten crazy deals in April before and I think that's a bit exploitive.

    - Don't cheat on players - this is more of an immersion rule. For example, I recently gave Ramsey a new contract. He wanted really low wage and I couldnt just make myself give him a bigger one for no reason. So I decided that in order to make sense, we have an agreement to sell him if anyone bids for him a decent fee. I put notes on players for such situations in case I forget. I also try to stay loyal to legendary players instead of just selling them when they reach 30+ years.

    - Absolutely no save scumming! Whatever happens, happens. Live with it.

    - Don't use exploitive tactics. Good tactics are fine, like Ozil's on this forum and I love using them. Sometimes I use ME exploiting tactics in certain saves, but they are created to purely have fun with weird stuff and test the game's limits. I don't ever use them in "realistic saves".

    - Stick to club visions/philosophies. Don't go over the wage and transfer budgets.

    - Don't remove % of future sales when buying a player.

Those are my rules on the top of my head.

  6. 12 hours ago, goranm said:

How often does that happen to you? I fine my players almost every time when they get 6.4 or below, the most I ever get out of that is that sometimes I get a message that the player's attitude has improved as a result of disciplinary measures, but no increase in determination or work rate.

About 50% of the time it works and I do it every chance I get. Maybe it's changed for FM 20? I don't really know, I played FM 20 for about a few days and I went back to FM 18. Apologies if it has been changed for the newest game, this feature has been around so long I didn't even considered it as a possibility of being basically removed.

  7. I leave conferences to the assistant as they are too time consuming, boring and ultimately - pointless. I've never seen any influence of how the team performs to answer your question. Just a tip if you want to go that route - sometimes even if the ass man takes the press conferences, you will get random one off questions about players or manager rivelries. You can just hit continue and move on without answering.

Team talks, however, are a big weapon in this game. The right team talk can be a big boost for the team. Pre match I go for "Pick up when you left off" where available and "prove a point". Those are really good ones when the team is on a winning run. Sometimes if I'm a huge favorite I go can with "I expect a win" and when I play a derby I always pick "for the fans" regardless home or away. If the team is not favorites avoid putting pressure on them. "Good Luck" is a good one when you don't know what to say - it has no positive or negative effects. "No Pressure" is great when you're a big underdog.

At Half Time If I lead by one or two goals I go with "don't get complacent", if I win by more I praise the players. If I am losing or drawing I criticise the players generally.

When a player is nervous I sometimes tell him "I have faith" but not always. Depends on the situation. If a player ever switches off from team talk - instant sub. Players like that never perform.

So that is basically it. There are more good team talks for specific situations, but I'm leaving you to discover them yourself. Also, there are always exceptions, so use common sense when talking to the team. Team personality also plays a part and your motivation attribute is important. That's basically it, I hope this helps.

  8. People still think that FM is a realistic simulation game and treat it as such. Do you guys know a manager that doesn't take part in team training? Do you know a manager that goes and negotiates every little detail about a player's contract? Like how many pounds he is going to earn by scoring a goal or playing an international game? Yeah, that's what I thought. There are things in the game to make it FUN and not realistic. And that's ok, because games are meant to be fun.

As Miles said in an interview once, the game was created to put you in charge of your favorite team, but unlike other games, the world around you would be alive. Evolving, and trying to simulate real life. And that is what it does to this day and it does it better than anybody else. The problem is, the AI world is too easy to exploit and the managing of your team is also too easy to perfect. It's easy even for the casuals. We've already read so many stories of people having it too easy. FM has always been a bit on the easy side once you learn how it works, but in recent years it has gotten way easier. The balance is off!

People will always complain. If the game is too hard the forum will be flooded with topics about it. New players will constantly complain and you can never satisfy 100% of the people. This is why many games include difficulty settings - so more people can enjoy the game depending on their skill. I hate to break it to you guys, but this is A GAME! And games are designed to be fun. For some people it's fun to win, win, win and move on. For some people fun is lose, lose, lose and figure out how to win. Both of these types of players are important and the devs should aim to satisfy both.

Okay, including a difficulty setting is not practical for FM and we already have ways to increase difficulty ourselves, but that doesn't fix the main issue. So either the game needs to be more balanced in general or keep it easy the way it is now and include an option to make it harder for the people that want a challenge.

Right know we can't even agree if the game is too easy or too hard because people are different. So give us a way to customize the game the way we want, so everybody can enjoy it. It's time to evolve, being stuck in the same mindset for many years doesn't leave room for evolution. I know it's hard, but change is good.

  9. Work Rate is easy to increse - every time a player plays below 6.4 rating you get the option to warn or fine him for a poor performance. Sometimes the player will complain, but sometimes he accepts the warning/fine and increases his Work Rate by 1 and sometimes his Determination as well. This is the best way to increase Work Rate. Bear in mind that warnings work best, if you fine a player you risk the entire team to revolt. But warning stops working after the player reaches 15 or 16 Work Rate and Determination, so to take it further you have to risk with fines. Tbh though if you manage to get a player to about 15 Work Rate it will be enough so maybe don't risk it. The option is called something like "Discipline player after last match" and it appears under the interaction tab when a player has below 6.4 rating after the game.

Team Work is way harder to increase. AFIK, you can only do it by training and it's really slow. So if a player doesn't have high Team Work by default you'll just have to accept it.

    Hope this helps.

No, no, there was a major issue with long shots in that version. Some long shot attempts would go near the corner flag, 20 meters away from the goal. With some quick research you can find posts about that on this forum :)

There is no issue with that, really. Sometimes the shots go way wide, but the % of goals scored outside the box is still realistic and players with good long shots are valuable. Sure, it looks bad but I got used to it so it's a non-issue for me. It's just a faulty animation, that's all.

But it was a miracle if you scored by direct freekick in FM18 :idiot:

Again, I disagree. My good free kick takers score 4-5 a season and I think that is not a bad number. Maybe it can be a little higher, but my teams generally score so many goals it doesn't bother me.

Nah, FM18 is brilliant, imo.  Not perfect by any means.  I've loved just about every second of it and haven't felt the need to buy a new version since.  But at this point I've been jealous of the added features for awhile now, particularly training, so I hope FM21 comes good.

Now with this I can agree. I still play FM 18 after not being able to get into FM 20. It's just superior in every way for me. FM 20 has some good features, but poorly executed. So I went back to FM 18 and I am still enjoying it. I recently started my millionth Arsenal save and I'm having fun so far. I wish the game could be a bit harder as I was able to assemble a ridiculous squad in no time but what can you do... At least Man Utd are providing a decent challenge in the first seasons. Later on I plan on trying to win it all with just players from the academy, but I might get bored with the save before that, who knows.

FM 21 will have to be out-of-this-world for me to buy it. And it has to be more difficult. Otherwise I don't see the point of spending my money on it.

In my opinion, the game definitely needs some sort of difficulty levels. I've been playing since 93/94 or thereabouts (less in recent years), and, like the dannysheard, I normally play with "my" team, in my case Man Utd. I've never had noteworthy problems winning the league in the first, or, at worst, the second season. This is just as true now as back when United were indeed the best team in the country. Managing Man Utd in their current situation should be difficult, because there are several teams in the PL that are significantly better than them. Do you think Ole Gunnar Solskjær finds it easy at the moment?

Rather than levels of difficulty, I'd call them levels of realism. More realism should make it harder to keep players happy if they're not playing regularly, certain players should be harder to manage regardless (Pogba, say), it should be harder to hold on to good players (in particular for smaller teams, which would make it harder to sustain growth over time), there should be more competition for players that you want to sign, there should be fewer players available who are interested in signing, etc. Also, other teams should be better at looking after they're own interests -- not easily selling players that they want to keep, making sure to replace players that they've sold, building up their squad in reaction to and anticipation of my (and other) clubs improving their squads.

Nothing in the above would make it artificially harder. Instead it would reduce the artificial simplicity that is currently in the game. Also, somebody made a point about level playing field between humans and the AI, but, realistically, it's only the human manager who actually does any thinking in this game, so inherently he/she certainly does have the upper hand. There are ways to re-balance this.

It should be just as hard, if not harder, to manage big clubs as it is to manage smaller clubs. Big club vs small club should definitely not need to define the level of difficulty.

I agree a 100% with this comment. Managing big clubs should be harder as it is in real life. So how about we have an option that is called "extreme realism" or "hardcore" that is tickable at start of the game. If you check that box the AI is supercharged and doesn't let you off. Everything is instantly harder and now you have a challenge. Now winning the league would not be "meh, anyone can do it", not it's an achievement. And you can play with your favorite club without getting bored after 3 seasons of winning it all. I really, really love this idea and I am dissapointed more people aren't in favour of it. New players can still enjoy the 'light' version of the game, but hardcore players can really test themselves with such an option.

  12. If you look at FM 20 as a standalone game it's brilliant and nothing comes close to it. No other football game is so complex and addictive. The problem is when you start comparing it with previous versions. It's really a step down to previous FMs in terms of execution. The ideas are fine, but the way the implemented them is not so good. This is the main problem - we are expecting every year the game to be better than before.

Yeah honestly I'm failing miserably since FM2018. I used to achieve, if not overachieve, until FM2017. Then something happened, probably I'm just getting older. So all this people claiming the game as "too easy"... they usually pick a british club covered by money and win the CL in 3 years. I pick an italian club struggling to pay wages and get sacked after 3 games in a row with a team predicted to finish the season 15th. Not so easy for me.

It's quite fun playing in Serie A because you have to get creative in the market. But it's still too easy. I had a save with Roma in FM 18. I struggled in the beginning because my tactic was crap as I was experimenting with new formations. Then I got back to my usual setup and it was a breeze. The problem was and still is on FM - the AI can't stay consistant. For some reason, Juventus with all their awesome players just dropped points left and right and barely managed to get top4 for 3-4 seasons in a row. And Inter, Milan and Napoli were nowhere near top level either. So I was winning the league with ease every season until I got bored. I never won CL but right before I stopped playing I made about 200 Million in player sales so I could have build a CL winning squad at that point.

I did something similar with Atalanta later on. My tactic that I've been using ever since FM 10 is very simple 4-2-3-1 with attacking mentality and mostly direct football. I favour pacey forwards and it just works without me having to do much. This is the default tactic that I use when I'm not having fun with some of Ozil's tactics here on this forum.

In LA Liga it's the same thing - Played with Valencia, Real and Barca could barely keep up. Won the league in the second season with barely any transfers. In the first season I struggled, but again adjusted the tactic and got 4th spot at the end. The AI of course made it easy for me as my rival for 4th who had 8 points advantage bottled all 3 last games and I sneaked in 4th place. I hate this too - 9 times out of 10 the AI bottles it and makes it easier for me.

Then Real Madrid responded with a new coach and 200 M transfers like Pogba and Kane. They still barely got 89 points and I won the league with ease again. I think It's too easy for the human player to go on winning streaks and it's too hard for the AI to do the same.

In the EPL sure you have money, but the game is harder in the beginning because in FM 18 you had beastly Man Utd winning like crazy. I hated them and I still do, but that's a good thing - there is a challenge there. On FM 20 it's Liverpool and sometimes City. Few seasons in and the poor AI can't do something like this. So the longer the game goes, the easier it gets.

TBH, there is no point discussing this. People have different oppinions, but at the end of the day the only one that matters are the casuals. They are 80-90% of the paying customers and if the game is too hard they just won't buy it. So it is what it is. All we can do is make challenges for yourselves and find new ways to enjoy the game.

I remember on CM06 I always tried to buy Messi for Man Utd whenever I had a save with them. Sometimes it worked but most times it did not.

On the more recent FM's I have managed to sign him but it's only ever on a free when his contract runs out.

In my current save, he went to Juventus for a couple of years and then him and Ronaldo retired at the same time

That's mental! Imagine the scenes if that happens in real life. Ronaldo and Messi in the same team.. crazy.

I was playing as Leicester and it took 95 million and a few star players but i managed to get him in January 2023 after the world cup, which he actually won. He did pretty well considering his age, scoring 39 goals and assisting 26 goals over 2 seasons and 74 appearances. I did use a custom database from off the workshop so that might have influenced something.

That's awesome! I don't think the database had much to do with it, just the game has made it a bit too easy to sign superstar players. But then again if they made it almost impossible like in real life we wouldn't have cool stories like this.

  15. In light of what is going on in the real world and the potential of finally seeing Messi in another club, I am curious how many of you have actually been able to prize Messi away from Barcelona in FM and what was it like to get him in your team? How did you get him in, and for how much?  In Football manager it's always easier, it's a game after all but I am interested in your stories across various versions of FM.

I think I only managed to get him twice - once in FM 08 with Arsenal and once in FM 15 with... Newcastle... in the 3rd season... I don't remember much about the first one, but the Newcastle thing was so bizzare. I was in the 3rd season I think and I never won the league or any major trophies, only finished in the top4 the previous year. Long story short I got him in for about 60-70M and before that I got Suarez as well. No idea how it was possible, but it was quite a fun playing with both in EPL.

So what are your stories with Messi? Have been able to get him somehow?

  16. I think I have regrets taking a job instead of not taking it.

On a Journeyman save in FM 18 I had a wonderful time in the Irish Premier League. Finally won the league with St. Patricks after a few attempts and made them some money along the way. I thought it was time to move on as I had interest from all over Europe and I accepted a job from Girona in the Segunda. It was a relegation battle, but I fancied my chances. I decided to force on them the tactic I used in Ireland and it backfired massively. Nothing worked and morale was so low, the team had no hope. I ended up resigning before I got sacked to save a bit of rep.

Then a few seasons later I made the same mistake that pretty much killed the save. I was at Gothenburg in Sweden and had a lovely time. They were a mid-table team when I arrived and I quickly turned them into the best team in the country by a mile. Again, I started to think about leaving as the league was not a challenge anymore. But I loved that team and the players that I made big. 90% of them were EPL rejects who I got on a free and developed. It was so much fun... and I ended it by going to Pescara in Serie B. I don't know why, I guess the pressure of being a journeyman save played on my mind, but for the second time I changed clubs when maybe I should have stayed a bit longer. The Pescara thing basically ended the save, as I just couldnt get into that team even though I live currently very near Pescara. Oh, well...maybe one day I'll resume and finish that save as I remember it so vividly.

So yeah, no regrets of not taking a job , but quite a few about taking one.

Joining a new club and mentally putting together some kind of tactical system to fit the players available, then seeing my vision actually come together on the field as a cohesive system.

Very interesting. I am quite the opposite, I like finding a way to fit a variety of players into my preferred systems, and being surprised by how well they fit in despite their lacking attributes sometimes.

One thing that I think we all love about FM - When a youngster unexpectedly breaks into the first team. I am not talking about the wonderkids, that's not a sensation. But when a player you had little hopes for has to come in maybe because of many injuries and saves the day. Players that you know probably aren't gonna make it, but they come in and do a great job when no one expects them to. I just love it when that happens, although it's rare.

    Here is an example:

    1150861558_TobyJeacock.thumb.png.35a94604c5c3a65e64a497e5c6862519.png

This guy will never be a top player for Arsenal, but we had injury crysis and he had to come on as a sub in CL. I don't remember agains who it was, it was a while ago but it was one of the big boys. iirc we were fighting for qualification and we needed the win. I put him on and he bangs in a hattrick out of nowhere. In his first freaking game! He became a legend that day and this is why I still have the screen shot around. I think later on he scored a few more from the bench as I had to play him in lesser games, I owed it to him to give him a chance. And he performed quite well for his poor attributes. I never played much further in that save but I still remember this like it was yesterday.

I just love it when random things like that happen.

  18. Oh no, I am trying it, no worries about that. Just because it won't be the same doesn't mean it can't work and be fun. And who knows, with the right tweaks it might become great. On FM 18 I tried his Pep Guardiola version of peak Barcelona and it never worked. Tweaked a few things and it became amazing. There is always a chance!

Tbh trying to get decent attacking football is a longstanding issue for me on FM, only managed it a couple of times to my liking. Once was on Fm18, of course!

That's interesting, it's always been quite easy for me. Most of the time it's at the expense of conceding a lot, but the goalscoring was enough to balance it out. I've played on attacking as long as I remember. This is one of the reasons I like this and most of Ozil's other tactics - they are attacking, but very well balanced and not game breaking.

@Impacto I've generally found trying to set up attacking tactics in FM20 in the same way that would produce lovely football in FM2018 doesn't work and leads to dull football. Tried with something like this and Ozil's Total Football (my FM life has basically been stealing his ideas for the past two/three years) and both are really low on goals (defensively generally excellent, though). No idea what it is about the match engine but so far no adaptation I've tried has worked. Will basically have to end up trying something completely different.

Thanks for letting me know! I was just about to play around with his Total Football adaptations, but I guess there is no point. It seems that game just behaves very differently with this ME. Very dissapointing. I guess I can always go back to playing FM 18 to enjoy his masterpiece tactics, but it's a shame not being able to do it in FM 20.
