This is a game breaking issue for me at the moment and makes it difficult to enjoy a long term challenge. I'm just running short tactically focused saves for myself this year instead. The AI is completely incapable of squad building and developing young talent as it stands.

    • That's especially disappointing this year as AI w/enhanced squad building was a promised feature on this FM from SI. This is SI's quote on how youth development would be handled differently this year:
      • "Previously, AI teams were less likely to pick youth prospects in the first team because they had low Current Ability scores. Now, those talents have a higher probability of being on the bench and will see more playing time when teams are ahead or controlling games in the latter stages. We have also worked on how the AI prioritise matches throughout the season, which should see improved rotation to help aid player development."

A prime example of these changes being largely ineffectual is how poor Brighton perform in FM terms. In my save they chose to start Steele every week and use Verbruggen as a bench warming backup. After a few seasons he was transfer listed despite having the potential to be one of the best goalkeepers available in world football. Even though Verbruggen's starting CA is a bit lower he has important attributes on a goalkeeper that make him better than Steele from the get go (including a Perfectionist personality and a significantly higher Aerial Reach).

    • I mention personality as it can be difficult to develop a player without the holy trinity of Professionalism, Determination, Ambition; and Perfectionist comes with a healthy dose of all three. You don't even need to be good at developing players to get a Perfectionist to his potential (especially with this year's advanced growth curve).

I'm a big fan of the ME engine changes this year but the game feels like it's in a very poor state at the moment for experienced players. The addition of the Saudi transfers, while realistic, is not a good addition in gameplay itself. It makes generating funds laughably easy. It's also difficult to "opt out of" in your own save as the high wage offer unsettles the players.

I detailed some of my issues with the AI transfers/squad building over here. I ended up abandoning the save after we did a FA Cup & Europa league double in the 4th season, it felt like the AI was completely incapable of keeping up even by that point and that despite myself playing with fairly severe self imposed restrictions.

I am new to FM24 so can not really comment, but I remember from previous FMs (especially FM11 that I played extensively) that the bigger the pool of players for the AI to choose from, the worse the squad building is.

Eg. I had one save in South Africa which has quite strict WP rules and at the start top teams in the league always sold their their best players for peanuts either to Arabia or to Europe. But after then, due to strict WP rules and limit on foreigners, the squad building was decent because the AI was forced to use domestic talent and when they brought a foreigner, it was usually a very good player because he had to have some youth or senior caps. In Europe the rules are generally very lenient + a lot of money which makes the life difficult for the AI 😄.

Unless your keeper has one leg, no. But you need to ask a tactical question

Well, I play in 2D so maybe he has :)

On a serious note I am just interested in what can be the cause (teamtalks, gelling, bad luck). After 7 matches I have currently the lowest amount of shots on goal received in the league (13) but conceded 10 goals.

  3. @RodrigogcAgree with you, especially the second paragraph, but I think we also have to keep in mind that nobody wants FM to become a full time job. I mean the amount of work/preparation that real life managers do is something we FM players want to imagine that we do it too but in reality we don't want to do it as we have our jobs :).

  4. @Fox-7-Thanks, exactly my thinking. AMs, maybe moving him to AMC (instead of AMCR), Winger instead of Defensive Winger, low crosses?....well a lot testing needed :). I do not mind if he does not contribute defensively too much as in theory he should be then a bigger counter attacking threat. Anyway it is not my choice to deploy a Poacher, rather a necessity in some games to adapt to players at disposal.

There's no shame mate, in fact at the beginning of the learning curve it is an almost mandatory step to reduce the waste of time compared to the trial and error approach (and less frustrating). I myself did this in my first steps into the FM world. Even now I regularly check here and on the web if there are interesting topics regarding aspects that I have always paid little attention to or which I have never dealt with, and I often discover and learn new things that improve my gaming experience even after 15+ years of FM

So after a bit of further testing in Chile (Deportes Copiapó) your tactic worked very well (I won 6 from 8 games , lost 5-0 vs. top CHI team Colo Colo but this was rather a teamtalk/mental problem as half of my team was nervous going into this match ). TM (T. Figueroa) was really good and I plan to sign him after starting some proper save(s).

Anyway I started a couple of new saves (in South America) for further testing purposes and so far I added some PIs (Stay Wider for DL and removing Hold Position for ML + removing Gets Further Forward for SV , this seems to better replicate what I want from them ie. MCL + ML floding the centre and attacking fullback providing width, also thinking of adding shorter passing to IFB). Given the players I currently have (towering TMs are quite hard to get when relying on free agents/loans), how would you modify your defense first tactic should you have a Poacher (Inzaghi type, not strong, not quick, good movement & finishing) at your disposal?

  6. @Fox-7-As I have stated I am new to FM24 (played old CMs, FM11/12/13, FM 16 also a bit but I did not like it). In order to make things simple for me I pretty much shamelessly copied your tactic (I like the combination of strong defensive play and a bit of controlling element, I like watching Barca IRL but as a FM manager I  rather prefer to be Ó. Tabárez/Cholo Simeone type of guy  ) and also my starting team (Deportes Copiapó, relegation candidates, IRL currently last in the Chilean First League after 5 matches, 0 points, last year they barely managed to escape the relegation) suits your tactic based on TM (I have two good TMs in my squad).

So far I have played a couple of easy friendlies to gain morale and one difficult friendly match vs Belgrano (from ARG First League, which is a higher standard league). I lost vs. Belgrano (0-1) and they quite dominated but this is ok as it is expected. On the other hand I won my first two league matches vs. good CHI teams (H- vs. O'Higgins and A - vs. Everton). My TM scored in both of these matches so I am really excited. I really like what I see on the pitch and as I am slowly getting grips with the game I am starting to experiment with PIs (as the overall standard of my players is not very high). Anyway next game away vs. Colo Colo will be tough. :)

    Thank you mate :applause:

Thanks for the reply @Los_Culés. Yeah I use some PIs:

RIFB/FB,LFB cross more often from deep aiming the TF

SV: take more risks, get further forward, move into channels (only in the standard version)

AM: move into channels, take more risks, dribble more

WM (you're right, I use a right-footed player): sit narrower, hold position, cut inside with ball.

The idea with my WM Is to have him in a hybrid position between covering for the SVs and FBa pairing with the DM to make a bit lopsided 3-2 rest defence, and supporting the attack by overloading the left side, luring the opponente leaving AM and DW on the right in a more 1vs1 situation when the play is switched on the right flank. I think a left-footed player could also work, i believe he'll just have a more limited natural passing range only towards the right side of the pitch (maybe the trait "used the outside of the foot" could help in this?)

Instead of morphing into a more possessional team going through the seasons, I'm trying to build a club DNA to the maximum extent of a Defence-First approach: I want to become an unpleasant and exhausting team to face in matches, a sort of a Simeone's Atletico and a Wimbledon's Crazy Gang mix

I'm very selective in my player recruitment, above all in strenght, jumping reach, bravery, aggression, determination and workrate

-Back 4 players (+DMs) around 190cm or above

-TF: you can tell by looking at Hornby

-Other players: >180 cm (the only actual exepction in my squad Is Lumeka, but in the very first season I have literally no money and I was in desperate need of a player like him for the AM/IW roles, and he was available for free with a small wage demand)

-Bonus Track: bad behavioural traits are very welcomed, as the seasons goes I'll even look for good newgens with "Unsportive" personality

To summarize, finding players like Rory McKenzie in my base squad at the beginning of the save (don't have a screenshot of him atm) is a true joy to my eyes and a good starting point from which to build

Thanks for the PIs, I will experiment with them in the coming days. My Left-Footed WM does not really suit this defence first style but he is my most and practically only creative/technical player (M. Medel). He is also old and rather slow, I will try to deploy him as a creator/crosser on the left side (like D. Beckham role :)). Meanwhile I will try to retrain one of my fullbacks/central midfielders for this role.

I like your thinking, sometimes I also do not morph. Eg. in FM11 I was managing a modest Uruguayan club (El Tanque Sisley) and after a few years practically all my players had AGG, BRA, DET, TEA, WOR > 14. I also teached a lot of my players PPM "Dives Into Tackles" and coupled with Hard Tackling Instruction my team was really intense (the match engine captured this well enough). I was also specifically looking for players with high hidden attribute "Dirtiness". Cholo Simeone/good old Uruguayan style.  On the other hand I also admire managers like M. Pellegrini/R. Gareca so I am naturally inclined to morph :).

I am looking forward to get some FM matches soon, so I will then report how am I doing.

  8. @Fox-7- awesome post. I have just started playing FM24 and thinking of doing something similar for a few seasons until my team gets better (this is my favourite FM approach, start managing some obscure team, focus on defence and then gradually progress to something more possessional). Do you use any specific player instructions? Also I suppose your WM - SU is right footed correct? Would left footed player also work?

  9. Riquelme was not staying "in the hole", he was constantly moving out from it to dictate the play. He was also one of the most pressing resistant players ever, capable of having several opponents on his back (this ability also made Xavi the best Spanish player ever). I agree with the passenger, though you can have one exceptional player free from defensive duties in modern football (Messi). It depends on how you tactically set up the rest of team.

  10. I have recently installed FM13 and I can see the effect of collision detection but not in a good way. Players with ball look dumber (as it seems to have a big effect on their decision making) and therefore it is actually quite easy to make defensive systems over effective (poor teams defending like 2014 Atlético). Also yesterday I played FM24 and hate it. It is basically a crossing simulator where central players practically always prefer to play the ball wide and the crossing accuracy even from bad players sometimes reminds me D. Beckham.

EDIT: Well, after playing some more I am actually starting to like/enjoy FM24. Some of the crossing accuracy still bothers me but generally the engine looks very nice. It just needs a bit of patience which is not my greatest virtue.

  11. I think that there is generally a big misconception on how somebody like Juan Román Riquelme really played. A lot of people describes him as a "static" Enganche, but it is actually far from truth. He was constantly moving into channels horizontally to receive passes (favouring left hand channel), even finding himself sometimes quite wide near the touchline. He certainly was not as mobile/nimble as eg. somebody like Pablo Aimar/Ariel Ortega, but he was far from "static" off the ball movement wise. I also do not believe that in nowadays football he would be easily marked out of the game. Even the likes of Makelele/Cambiasso were not able to keep him under control. :)

Anyway, I would like to ask (N10 fans ) how do you rate central play in FM24? I was reading that the central play is lacking because even top players are not inclined to play many through balls. Could you provide some clips of brilliant through balls? I am still playing FM11/12 and do not want to give up my N10 :D.

  12. Hi Özil,

Great, very inspirational reading. It actually inspired me to start a new game where I will try to introduce some "Invincibles concepts".

    1. However, I will start in FM11 (my favourite version till this day).

    2. As usual, I will start in South America. Specifically with Santa Fe (Bogotá based team that adopted club colours from Arsenal :)).

    3. I will focus on my youth team (need to upgrade facilities, networking first).

    4. Will send my scouts to Senegal/Ivory Coast to look for the new P. Vieira/K. Touré

    5. Hopefully after a few seasons I will create the "Invincible" team (will be mega hard as there are simply soooo many matches to be played in Colombia during the season :))

and btw. huge thanks  for the video with player attributes from CM03/04. Sweet memories .

  13. @HUNT3R " Vertical positioning is how it has always been. Whether they're listed as CMs or not, they can behave how you want them to. "

They won't. A central midfielder in FM will act differently on the ball, will make different runs than the striker and with different timing. No role in FM will make a central midfielder to act same as striker. Also why should it? Atlético strikers IRL are not midfielders, that's the whole point.

  14. 3 minutes ago, herne79 said:

    Well, yes and no.

@HUNT3R is correct here as the formation you see on the Tactics screen is your defensive formation.  From FM's perspective, the standard 442 that hunt3r mentions is 2 strikers, 4 central midfielders, 4 defenders - and that's how it defends.  If you want to achieve something more akin to Atletico, you need to move the players on your tactics screen deeper, making use of the DM line and the AM line.  Having said that, you'll never get an exact replication of Atletico into FM at present but you can get an approximation if you are flexible and creative with the tactic creator.

That may sound weird, but once you get past all of these naming conventions and pre-conceived ideas of where players should be positioned, it makes a lot more sense.

Vertical positioning is one issue (btw. how effective will be a DR, DC, DC, DL, DMC, DMC, WBR, WBL, MC, MC team on defensive mentality with low creative freedom?). Will I ever score a goal? But seriously, these are just workarounds, not what FM players should be forced to do (also as far as I know Costa, Villa, Torres, Gameiro, Griezmann are not central midfielders in FM database).

Horizontal positioning is even bigger issue. Look at the attached picture. On the left is how FM perceives defending as 4-4-2, on the right you see how Atlético defends as 4-4-2 (it is simplified, but gets you a picture). Am I able to this in FM? No. Also not mentioning a fact that when the ball is around the central circle Atlético players are defensively positioned more like 4-2-2-2.

    Atleti.jpg

  15. 12 hours ago, HUNT3R said:

Which leads to the conclusion that a standard 442 isn't how they defend, so don't choose that as the formation in FM.

Not true. They defend as 4-4-2, but not everywhere on the pitch. In FM we can only choose one defensive formation irrelevant of any defensive phases. And when Atlético form that deep 4-4-2 the positioning of certain players is still different of what is perceived as 4-4-2 by FM (among other things Atlético two banks of four are not as horizontally symmetric as in FM). Simeone clearly instructs his players where/how to position themselves on the pitch. We can choose 4-4-2, roles and that's it :(.

  16. It is pretty impossible to emulate how Atlético defend. In FM you can choose standard 4-4-2 as your defensive formation but you can not influence individual positioning of players in different phases of the game (in other words in FM you choose 4-4-2 and your players defend as standard 4-4-2 everywhere on the pitch, problem is that it is not how Atlético really defend IRL). To do that we would need something like wobble (old CM/FMers know what I am talking about).

What's the best tactic to play like At. Madrid?

Tbh it is very hard  to replicate Atlético. Without going into details take 2 main characteristics of Atlético.

    1. Compactness - Vertical

In FM terms this means playing fluid/very fluid, but fluid also means more creative freedom. Even with "more disciplined" instruction your players will have higher CF than you would want/expect from your compact, aggressive, defensively minded team.

    2. Compactness - Horizontal

You can play with minimal width, but the positioning of fullbacks is so bad (in FM16) that it will not remind you real life Atlético at all. IRL Atlético fullbacks staying a bit wider without possession in order to be able to press wide areas quicker (the opposition is funneled to wide areas because of very narrow midfield). The narrow midfield plays more like 4-2-2-2 which becomes 4-4-2 (but still with very, very narrow midfield) in Atlético's own half. This is also something very hard/impossible to replicate as you can only choose one defensive formation that can not morph into anything else. Bring back good old wibble/wobble!! :)
