I'm looking for some advice since my youth challenge is dying slowly and I'm afraid there's no way out.
I'm stuck in this limbo where my squad is not good enough to compete for promotion but always avoids relegation with ease. I finished this challenge last year so I'm used to limbo years where you're just waiting on some youngsters or board improvements so you can take the next step. The issue however is that we are leaking money ($500K deficit/year in the Belgian second division). Because of this my board won't accept any of my improvements request and my wage budget keeps getting cut. The youngsters that come trough are decent (with the odd generational talent) but not good enough to challenge for promotion. Feels like I'm in this downward spiral that's headed to bankruptcy or relegation. Has anyone ever experienced this and found a way out? Maybe I should cut my staff (4 coaches, HOY and assman) to save about $300k/year but that seems like suicide. My only lifeline looks to be a takeover but no guarantee this will suffice.I hate quitting on a team since I get weirdly attached to my pupils but I've never been closer with this one.
I’d say that I’m not nearly as experienced as you are, but what I’ve been doing is making an effort of selling my 2-3 oldest players each year. It allows for my youngsters to develop, and there isin’t a significant drop in quality (maybe 0.5-1 stars). Also, can you go bankrupt? I thought you could go into Adminstration, but not bankrupt.

How do I go by adding "develop players using the club's youth system" to the club vision/culture when I'm being offered a new contract? I'm 3 seasons in and my job status is listed at "very secure" and was previously "untouchable" for what its worth. Cant find it for some reason... Thanks in advance.
The player can’t add it, it is the board that decides to add it.

It's always good/advisable to have an optimal level of compactness (which I already described in the previous comment).
I meant under which circumstances is it best to be compact compared to other circumstances.

The distance between DL and LOE is about your compactness in defense (which is an important factor regardless of the style of play you want to implement). The smaller the distance, the greater compactness. And vice versa. But too much compactness can be as bad as too little. So being too compact is not necessarily a good thing. Basically, an optimal level of compactness is achieved when DL is just one notch higher than LOE.
In general, when is it be good to be compact?

What is the relationship between the D Line and the LOE? More specifically, when would you put the D Line at a higher value than the LOE, and vice versa.

Sackings need to be more realistic and not based off a couple of bad results
Yeah, it’s extremely harsh, but I wouldn’t say it’s unrealistic. Sackings like that happen all the time in real life.

Anyone got any recommendations for teams to try and holiday for promoting teams in Brazil or Argentina? Looking for fallen giants with decent infrastructure, á la Kaiserslautern or Palermo?
@Cheez3y you were managing ABCFC if I remember right, what happened there?
- Energie Cottbus (Germany)
- Clube de Futebol Os Belenenses (Portugal) (Many had concerns with this club though
- KSC Lokeren-Temse (Belgium)

I think you can just never tell with intakes. They can surprise you, although my current team is reasonably according to initial promise
As - 4
B - 2
C- 1
D -1
E - 1
F - 1
J - 1 (I didn't even tag him when he first arrived, so honestly he could be anywhere from J to P or something).
What are the breakdowns of others' all-regen teams?
A - 4
B - 2
C - 1
D - 2
E - 2

How do you decide these ratings? Ive not done the nicknames on my players as I didn't really understand how you were doing it
The number = the year of the intake
The letter = the ranking based on PA when they first arrive
For Example:
Say you have 2 5 star PA players, a 4.5 star PA player, and a 4 star PA player come through in your 3rd intake. The 4.5 star PA player would be named 03c

If a player has good playmaking attributes, it does not mean that you must play him in a PM role. Any player can successfully play at least 2 different roles, and most can play even more. For example, players that are good as either AP or RPM are in most cases also good for the mezzala role.
From the attacking standpoint, you obviously lack penetration. Your only player with attack duty is a playmaker (AP), who is naturally inclined to drop deeper (compared to non-PM roles) in order to make himself as available for passes from teammates as possible.
Your other 2 midfielders are also playmakers, which further increases creation and organization at the expense of penetration.
Plus, given that all your front 3 are played on support duties, the logical question is who is supposed to benefit from potential risky passes/through balls coming from that "playmakers galore"?
Defense-wise, you use fairly aggressive instructions (higher lines + more urgent pressing + high team mentality + counter-press) and then seem to try to sort of "moderate" that aggression with easy tackling (i.e. stay on feet). But things usually don't work that way. A more effective - plus simpler - way is to simply leave both pressing and tackling on their default settings.
Thanks for the reply. I have a couple of questions though:
1) Is the disparity between my xG scored and goals scored down to my players, my tactic, or just bad luck?
2) Despite the obvious flaws, especially in midfield, why did the tactic work so well in the second half of last season? Was it luck? We were oftentimes outplaying the opposition, and a lot of our victories were deserved.I am thinking of changing the DLPsu to a DMde, and the APat to a CMat, and the IWsu to an IWat. In instructions, I am thinking of moving up the tempo by 1 or 2 notches. I will go to normal presssing/tackling, and drop both lines down by 1. Would these changes make sense?

Honestly, I played a lot of playmakers, because my team was filled with them. They all have really high passing/vision/decision, but their defensive abilities are not the best (tackling of my normal 3 playmakers is 9, 15, 5)

I have a tactical problem...
I am currently doing a youth academy challenge. So last season, it was my first back in Bundesliga 2 after relegation from the Bundesliga. My first half of the season wasn’t great, so I switched formations to the 4141dm wide listed below, and I reached the promotion playoffs (where I lost). I was confident going into the next season, but it has not gone as planned so far...
After 8 matches I have 10 points, 5 goals scored, and 5 conceded. However, my XG for is 10.19, and my XG against is 4.21. I have some screenshots below that could help to diagnose the problem. The screenshots go into last season (from the start of this formation) in order to get more data, because I’m not sure how much you could diagnose with just 5 scored and 5 conceded. The only thing I really find alarming is the amount of through balls conceded. I don’t know what else I should do though, the formation has a DM, and my defense is narrow. Is it my players, or something else? What other screenshots could help to diagnose the problem? What tactical changes should I make, or should I change the formation altogether? I don’t really understand why the formation is not working all of a sudden, given minimal change in my reputation. It seems this formation is good at removing the opposition’s chances at countering.

Energie Cottbus Season Review ~ 2025/26
Not the season we had hoped for, but to be honest, it would have been unrealistic to ask for more. Pre season odds were 1000-1, and 17th was 200-1. We struggled greatly in the beginning, getting only 8 points in the first 23 games. I finally found a variant of 4411 that I liked, and we got 16 points last 11. Unfortunately, it was not enough, and we were relegated. It could have been different too, we were 2-0 up in our 2nd to last game against Eintracht Frankfurt, but we ended up losing 5-2.
Julius Kuhl 05b is exactly the player that we need; a two footed winger! He will be trained to play on the other side, and that is where he will be played most often. Our RW is average at best, and both our LW and RW have no real backups. He will play quite a bit when he is old enough. Mike Proietti looks good too, but probably won’t get as much game time.
Expectations for next Season
Promotion? Our team is better than when we came up, so why not? 60 points should do it.

In that case could you upload your save game to our cloud service and we will take a look.
Once the save game has been uploaded could you let us know the name of the save.
FC Energie Cottbus (v02).fm
Game date should be January 1, 2027 (If it isn't I uploaded the wrong one)
Hopefully I did this right as I have not done this before...
The player in question is Robert Rogic 04a

A contract extension clause cannot be triggered if it is going to take the player above the maximum allowed contract length.
For example if your club allow a max contract length of 4 years and you sign a player to a 3-year deal with a 3-year extension, the clause cannot be triggered until the player is into the last year of his deal.
This was to prevent scenario's where the user could put a player onto an unrealistically long contract.
Cheers,
Ben
He currently has 6 months left on his contract

When my player spawned in the intake at age 15, I gave him the maximum available contract (3 years + 3 extra). He just turned 17 in September, finally signing the contract he had agreed to 2 years before. When I went to him to sign a new deal, he didn’t want to (as he had just signed one), which is expected. However, there is no option to trigger the 3 year extension, even though he has one in his contract. It is now January, and I am still unable to trigger the extension.

Yeah, it's not correct, but if I understand it correctly, the licence still enforces the rule at 17. See here and some more comments down that thread.
I understand that the rule is incorrect (and accept it). However, my question is, how did Moukoko play when he was not registered? Why was he able to play in November, and not wait until January?

For example, I have a player born in late September that I want to play in the league, but the next registration period is January. He can play in the Pokal, but he can’t play in the league, I think. (Or am I missing something?)

How did Youssoufa Moukoko make his debut in November? Aren’t the registration windows only open during the transfer window in Germany? I have 17 year old that I want to play, but they are not registered. I don’t think that they can be registered until January. Am I missing something? Or is this rule only in FM, and not in real life?

Season 4
Energie Cottbus Season Review ~ 2024/25
WOW! Promotion to the Bundesliga at the first attempt was not expected. This is probably my best ever achievement on Football Manager. I was always envious of the people that would far exceed the media predictions. This is the first time that I did just that!
Anyways, before the season had started, I was hoping just to stay up. It took us until the final day to secure automatic promotion; a win against Jahn Regensburg was enough. The final day was nerve racking to say the least; we had the chance of missing out on the playoffs entirely if results didn’t go our way. A 3rd place finish would mean a 2 legged playoff against Hertha Berlin. Hertha Berlin had a media prediction of 6th, and they comfortably dispatched Heidenheim 4-0 over the 2 legs.
Well, how did we do it? I’m not entirely sure! Most years, our points tally would not have been enough for the playoffs, let alone automatic promotion. However, we were quite clinical, defensively strong, and we didn’t concede late goals. But I’m very concerned with next season. Many of our starters are considered to be on a regional division level (4th tier, unprofessional). Nils Stettin is rated as a regional division player, but he was top scorer with 23 goals! He is even rated at 1.4m. Youth players Jens Pägelow 01b and Frank Jacobs 01e are the only players good enough for Bundesliga football. My only hope is the team cohesion and morale.
A great intake to top off an amazing season! Robert Rogic 04a would get plenty of game time if only he was only enough to meet the requirements. Nihad Hadzisulejmanovic 04b is a good player too, but he is in a position we are well stocked in. I think the intake is down to upgrades in youth recruitment/junior coaching and higher rep in Bundesliga 2. It will be exciting to see what the next intake brings!

Survival? I’m not entirely sure how realistic that is. I was surprised with my performance in Bundesliga 2, so maybe my luck will continue? I’m hoping for 34 points, 1 PPG, and survival.

First time trying this challenge. After a couple of reloads I've managed to get Royston Town who I have never seen get promoted before -
My squad is very looking very thin, this is how looks after promoting all the U23s and U18s
I take it can offer the greyed out players in my club contracts, just not greyed out players from other clubs?
I think that you are allowed to play them, but not offer them contracts

it is a bit of pain but if u have two screens or something, it goes really fast.
Can’t you just copy their name in game from the bar at the top, and then paste it?

Season 3
Energie Cottbus Season Review ~ 2023/24
Promotion! We finished +9 on last season, and we even won the league! Bayern should have won the league, but they fell apart towards the end of the season. Our tally last season would have seen us comfortably promoted this season, so that is a bit frustrating. Anyways, we had a great season. We were unbeaten in our first 23, and had a little dip towards the end of the season. We used plenty of youth prospects, 3 of which made it into the team of the year.
I would like to highlight/pay tribute to Matthias Rhan. He had 14 goals as a CB, and he was our only ‘tall’ player. Unfortunately, he decided to retire at the end of the season, which makes no sense to me. He had never played on 3. Liga before Cottbus, let alone the 2nd Bundesliga. Anyways, he was a good servant to us, and will be missed.
A relatively disappointing intake given the preview. Erik Düwiger 03b looks good even though he does not have 5 star PA. 20 determination is really nice. I’m not so sure that Lars Schmidt 03a will make it with only 4 determination.

Survival! 35 points should do it. We get an extra 7m each season in the 2nd Bundesliga, so it is important that we stay.

Despite exceptional recruitment and coaching and great youth and training facilities, my intakes are getting far worse. Do you think its more the team is a lot better now, so it takes a lot more to get a 4 or 5 star player coming through? I'm still getting players developing into first team player, but they end up with higher ratings than predicted? Maybe I should change my head of youth development?
Your intakes in Iceland are a lot better than mine when I was in Iceland. I played 12 seasons, and in the last couple, I was getting only 1 5 star PA player. In my opinion, intakes are very much luck based. In my current save with Energie Cottbus, I have been documenting my intakes:
Even though my youth coaching, youth recruitment, and reputation all improved, my intake was much worse. The 5 star PA part is also probably realistic, as my squad barley improved.
