Any more details about your set-up you can give us? It could be due to marking/closing down instructions...

I've tried just about every set of TIs and PIs you can think of, the result is the same. I'm sure you'd have the same results as me if you went into your save, switched your tactics to a 442 with the wide players on attack then went into a game

I think lower mentalities like defend and counter tend to defend a little more narrowly.. but also deeper down the field. But if you had a counter mentality , a structured shape, and attacking wingers then they should get forward plenty as well.

I'm not sure that is quite what you are looking for but I'd need more detail as to exactly how you want to defend.

I've tried playing on defensive but it didn't seem to make any difference. No matter what they sit wider than my full backs and leave the midfield two exposed. I've attached some examples below

There's nothing particularly complicated about the way I want to defend, just want to use a compact and narrow shape and its frustrating that it seems impossible to change defensive width

  3. How do I get wingers and lm/rms to stay wide as the build up progresses up the pitch? It seems like the only way to get real width (where the wide players stay more than a little wider than the opposition full backs) is impossible without using full backs or wings backs yourself. I'd very much like to use IWBs in my tactic but things just become too congested and narrow.

I don't have access to my laptop at the minute so I can't show examples of my own but it's more or less demonstrated by this screenshot from an Ozil post here a couple years ago. The wide players aren't incredibly narrow but I'd really like them to be 5-10 yards nearer the touch line to drag the opposition full backs wider and open up space in the channels. Is this possible?

Is there any way in fm to replicate David Villa's positioning in this goal?

Basically how he stays almost on the touch line until an opportunity presents itself. Have been trying to emulate Barcelona under Guardiola this year but finding it very difficult to get this part right. It seems impossible to make wingers go as wide as that and they also seem to come inside much sooner in the build up than I'd like them to.

I'm also finding dribbling very underpowered, even with exceptional dribblers like Iniesta and Messi. Like for example in my last game Messi picked up the ball and ran about 15 yards just straight into an opponent who then tackled him. In general they barely ever seem to be able to beat their man. Is there any tactical solution to this or do I just have to accept that fm can't replicate their dribbling properly?

    Anyone?

  6. What's the reason for 3 striker systems being so ridiculously strong this year?

I'm a very average fm player tactics wise and I spent maybe 5 minutes creating mine and have done no proper analysis or tinkering of it yet its still getting me far, far better results than I should be able to get. Obviously I expected to score quite a few goals but it seems ridiculously solid defensively as well which considering there's 3 players who do literally no defending doesn't make much sense to me.

The first save I did with it was with Man United who are obviously a very strong team but probably not strong enough to win the PL with 102 points (about 30 points ahead of 2nd place), concede easily less than a goal a game and finish with a GD of about +90, which is what ended up happening. Having a similar experience so far in my Torino save in terms of performing far beyond what you'd expect, currently top of Serie A in January.

Should stress again that I'm not particularly good at this game and don't adapt my tactics at all to the situation bar going defensive late on to hold onto a lead therefore I really don't think I should be able to get such good results, particularly considering I don't know of any team that plays with 3 up front the way fm represents it

Does the AI just not adapt to the tactic properly?

Are there marking issues in the ME?

Is exploiting the channels just OP?

I know there are quite a few people with a very deep knowledge of the ME on this forum so I'd be interesting to hear your thoughts

If you move Messi to the middle or the right, does the red square move with him?

If so, it's probably just because he isn't as well suited to the role as the other two. How does his shadow striker rating compare to the other two?

Looked at it a bit more, the red square stays no matter who plays where. Think it's cause when I was moving about the players to create a new formation the left AM defaulted to an AM(S). It then didn't update when I changed roles. Would file a bug report but have to head out now unfortunately

Anyone noticed if the "wide midfielders defending too wide" problem is solved?

Other early thoughts of the match engine?

Seems to be. There's still no way to change defensive width either for the whole team or individually but the natural setting is nowhere near as bad as last year.

Match engine seems to be very similar to last year apart from that although I'm noticing shadow strikers seem to have unusual positioning
