Excellent advice. I always create a note to remind me on 1st of every month to praise players with good training rating (I look for >= 8.0) and criticise those with <6.5.

Many thanks for response. Slow progress here as I have spent ages overhauling the coaches and scouts… amazed at how poor the initial back room team set up was. I tend to micro manage career saves and have yet to play my opening league game. Squad didn’t seem to bad and I am starting with a 433DM tactic with Mount as CM(A).
U21’s have some good potential with Soonsup-Bell, Casedei and Chukwuemeka all possibly 4.5 potential… which would be better thanMount, Pulisic, Kante, James etc. Planning on leaving them in U21’s ,where training schedule will be heavier than first team who will have higher number of matches, and giving them regular cameo game time to bring their development on.
Sold Jorginho for £50m(£60m) and a few youngsters. Trying to offload Ruben too before contract runs down as high wage for his relative quality. Managed to tie Kante down to cheaper 2 year deal and Mount to a long term contract. Recalled Choi from loan as cover for Ziyech if good bid received. However Ziyech playing well in pre season and contract negotiations with Choi broke down after he wanted more than Mount! He would be on more than Kante taking into account the huge appearance fee he wanted…… will play him and hope good bid comes in and then sell! May well keep Ziyech now if performances remain good. Hutchinson in U21’s may be long term Choi replacement/cover but currentLy only rated possibly 3.5 star potential..time will tell.Only two signings so far - Okoli £17.5m(£22.5m) as young central defender to hopefully become long term Silva replacement and Scjelderup £6.5m(£8.5m). A little concerned about cover for Reece if injured long term as Azpi ageing and Lacks speed now. Choi could provide cover as Wing Back but not in DR position…. Scouts looking but don’t want to make panic/expensive buy.
Time to get back to pre season now and complete staff recruitment … awaiting work permit clearance for the last 7…..

Just set up long term career save …. Media prediction 5th…Board require top 2 finish…. Hopefully I will survive so that it really does become long term Chelsea save….

Did you receive offers for Ziyech and Jorginho or offer them out/ transfer list? Also wondering if you sold them in the initial summer window or January 23 window.

Many thanks @Cleon for pulling this together; a fascinating read with lots of "food for thought" for me to take into my FM saves. I found the mentality section particularly useful along with the training the eye section with its examples/analysis. Looking forward to FM23 but having read through this playbook I am planning on trying a few things out on my current FM22 main save prior to getting into FM23.

If you control general and/or individual training for the U18s, then then you don't get to choose their tactic.

I think it is a bug and I have reported. Workaround if you want to take control of all U23 and U18 training with them using 1st team tactic is all in sequencing:
With staff in control of U23 and U18 training , load your 1st team tactics. Then go to Development Centre and for U23 and U18 choose the 1st team tactic you want them to use. After doing this you can then take control of U23 and U18 training with them still using the tactic you just set via Development Centre... Not elegant but workaround until fixed....

Anyone else noticed imported custom views in squad section being shown as different name when you leave squad view and then return?
I have imported several custom views to my Squad section and when I chose them the correct name is shown - YouthIntake, MatchSelection etc.
Happens for 1st team , U23 and U18 squad views....
When I then go to another section and come back to squad view the last imported view attributs etc chosen is still shown but it is now displayed as Eye followed by A.

Just started a game, having sorted U18's tactic workaround, only to now discover lots of "greyed out" players in my 1st team squad that I can offer contracts to? Never seen this before in Fm...What on earth is going on? Mean't to be there or bug? Possibly early sighting of youth intake - although no CA/PA stars shows etc.... Anyone else seen this or know what is going on....:
Have match against 2nd X1 today and wondering if they are "filler playes" as lots of Chelsea 1st team squad on hols! I have plenty of better U18's and U23's for the match... Will they disappear when players return from hols if this is the reason???

@mhaffyI also have the default skin. Perhaps the option is only available of you have a U18 Manager. Take a save, appoint a U18 Manager and see if you have this option. Sounds like a bug still exists as if you are managing you should the 3 1st team tactic options
Thanks for your input....your screenshot led me to try different sequencing....
Found a workaround now, although definitely a bug since FM21. After starting new save I need to set 1st team tactic and ensure via the Development Centre that U23's and U18's set to use 1st team tactic. If then go to Staff Responsibilities to take control of General and Individual Training for U23's and U18's any changes I make to 1st team tactics will show in U23's and u18's.
If you take control of training BEFORE setting tactics in Dev Centre you are locked out..... Phew....what a long winded way to do things........ Definitely needs fixing...

Good luck....I didnt play Beta, just ran tests and reported bugs but never spotted this one. i have started 3 new saves in full game release and same issue in each one. Please let me know how your save goes and if you have same issue can you tag feedback to SI on bug tracker - mine is in Medical and development Centre, Training and Finances section...hopefully the right place! Never experienced this in any other version of FM....

I dont understand eithereither. I have started 3 new career saves and same issue in every one. As I like to develop you absolutely zero point me investing time in a save if I cannot get U18's to train same tactic as 1st team. Also unable to change U18 corner routine's, set pieces etc...all locked and seemingly still controlled by U18 Ass Man. If I sack him the Assistant takes over and tactic becomes his Preferred one..... Absolutely bizarre.
So you control U18 training in your save and are able to determine primary tactic that they train?
Wish SI would respond to my Bug Tracker report....

I am controlloing Gerneral and Individual Training for U18's.
When I click through to U18's, Tactics it is fixed to U18 Manager Preferred Tactic and I am unable to change, load a tactic...

Just started what I hoped would be long term save but problem straight away. I have loaded my 1st team tactic which is duly showing as being trained by 1st team.
Taken control of U23 and U18 Training - Leading Training and Individual Training.
When I go to U23 training they are indeed using same tactic as 1st team.
U18 tactic is set to standard 5221 WB that I am unable to change!
Seems Preferred Tactic of U18 Manager locked in despite me taking control. I sacked him only to find that the U18 tactic was know locked as U18 Assitant Manager's Preferred tactic.....
Cant see any point me starting long term career save until this is fixed!
Raised bug tracker report.
Presumably others have same issue.....very frustrating...

Glad potential ability star issue sorted...pity that all average basic wage calculation still hasn't been fixed and still Zero for each player category. Raised yet again despite in Beta with SI saying they were aware of it and it was under investigation...diasappointing

In Premier League I change attribute thresholds and colours to:
I reduce them by 1 each time I go down a tier so Championship 16,14,12 , EFL 1 15,13,11 etc

I raised removal of PA from overview screen in bugs forum and SI responded that it is being looked at. Will hopefully be restored on release….

I know various skins are available but have always used the skins that come with the game. Seems very strange decision to remove potential ability from overview screen, necessitating extra user clicks, when the aim should be to improve user experience…

Very disappointed to see that a players Potential Ability rating has been removed from the Player Overview .... In FM 22 you now have to do an additional click and go to the Coach Report to see this! The Coaches Summary comments "Important player but may be past his best" have also been removed from this years Player Overview. There is still space on the Overview Screen to include PA and Summary comment as in FM21 - either below or to the right of CA. I cannot believe that this change has been made on purpose as increasing clicks hardly enhances the user experience. Hopefully this oversight bug will be fixed for full game release.

My regular career save set up is as follows:
England - 4 Leagues, France 2, Germany 2, Holland 2, Italy 2, Portugal 2, Scotland 2, Spain 2, Belgium 2, Austria 1, Denmark 1, Norway 1, Greece 1, Switzerland 1, Sweden 1, Turkey 1, Argentina 1, Brazil 1.
18 Nations, 29 Leagues (all above playable), with Small Database.
Game speed indicated at 2 Stars.
I leave Detail Settings at Default and do not make any changes via the advanced database option.
PC is i7-7700 @ 3.60 GHz, 16GB Ram, GeForce GTX 1050

Pity they didn’t negotiate a buy back clause for Tomori. The buy back clauses for Livramento (£40m) and Abraham (£68m) may come in useful later….

Fingers crossed re Christensen. How are Trevoh Chalobah and Malang Sarr doing for you? trevoh only 3* potential in the Beta save I created just to look at things and run FME vs QME stats tests for posting in Bugs Tracker...Was hoping, given his real life perfomances so far, that he would have been buffed versus FM21..

Thanks; maybe I won’t disable first transfer window when I start my long term save on circa 9th November…. I experimented at start of beta save and managed to sign Christensen on new 4 year deal plus option for another year at £105k per week with £20k appearance fee and circa £3m loyalty bonus… so may be able to tie him down in my long term save….

Steady, albeit slow, progress since my last update. My scouts came back with a great recommendation to provide competition for Reece as first transfer window was about to close. I signed Vanderson from Monaco for £15(£18.5)m on deadline day and he has been a revelation. Rated as 4 star potential and performing better than Reece so far; 7.29 ave rating to 6.91 Reece. Azpi, as a consequence, has been getting very little game time and causing problems in dressing room with Pulisic and Kepa supporting him…..
I have currently reached mid December and am about to resume the season when World Cup finishes ( Semi finals are Netherland v Brazil and France v Croatia) with Carabao Cup game against Man City! Currently 3rd in league after 16 games with 33 points having settled on a 41221 DM Asymetric AML tactic after refining my initial 433DM tactic.
I have decided to sell Azpi and Pulisic and accepted offers of £12.5m and £45m. No need to replace Azpi as Vanderson already in place and Schjelderup will be promoted to 1st team squad for Pulisic. Schjelderup has performed well so far when I have given him 1st team experience.
In the run up to resumption of season I have been giving players U21 game time to get them in condition but unfortunately Broja and Auba have both suffered injuries. Auba has been absolutely useless so far and I am keen to offload him, while Broja has been ok but needs to improve his conversion rate of 9%.
With circa £80m available in January transfer window my temptation is to bring in a striker as Soonsup-Bell not ready yet despite being good propect. Another option would be to play Sterling / Schjelderup there until Broja returns…. I will have to see what options there are in the forthcoming transfer window. I am keen on trying to keep and develop Broja and Soonsup-Bell who both have high potential so I may look for a short term older striker for up to c £15m. I am not planning on keeping Zhakaria and Kante not getting any younger so a quality DM/CM is another possibility instead of a striker…
