  1. Everyone knows Mentality is one of the hardest things to understand and get our heads wrapped around.

As an American though I feel that I am at a further disadvantage when creating tactics because I get to see and deal with so little football. (Just try an MLS save sometime to see the disaster that is football in American).

So, when it came to Mentality I always tried to think of it as risk level. The higher the Mentality the more risk you take and the lower the Mentality the less risk you take. Though this view is correct I believe it has lead me into some error and I have come up with what I think is a better way to consider Mentality.

So now this is what I have come up with:
I think of Mentality not as risk level, but as aggression level.

The way I have come to see it is that the higher the Mentality the more aggressive you are asking the player to be. It is this higher aggression level that is causing the higher risk. Thus for lower Mentalities it is isn't so much you are asking the players to be more careful, but are telling them to be less aggressive and from this lowering of aggression you get less risky.

    What do you think?

What lead me to this idea is that certain tactics kept calling for higher levels of Mentality. Example is Tiki-Taka wants a Positive Mentality. It isn't that Tiki-Taka cannot be played at a lower Mentality, but it is best played with players being more aggressive, and a higher Mentality, and therefore taking more risk.

The same is for Counter-Attacking. Counter systems always seem to ask for lower Mentalities, Cautious or Defensive. They work best when you ask you players to be less aggressive and therefore you are taking less risk.

So what do you think? Am I right, wrong?

  2. Thank you for the replies.

I agree that I would not recommend it for someone new to FM. I mean, FM at least to me, is hard enough.

That being said I find as an American and at a lost for Tactics sometime I find these analysers help me see things I did not realize before.

I agree with "Hilly1979" in that some of the things these analysers warn about aren't necessarily things you HAVE to worry about, but they do give you a good idea.

  3. On the Guide to FM website there is a System and Style Analyser.

    https://www.guidetofm.com/tactics/role-combinations/

    https://www.guidetofm.com/tactics/playing-style-implementation/

You input various factors, player roles, player duties, team instructions etc and it gives you and idea and suggestions for changes to make.

It does take a little bit of reading to understand the output and what they are telling you.

What does the community think of these? Are they worth the time, are they good, bad....is the community indifferent?

  4. So, I was listening to some commentators talk about how West Brom do not have the quality to stay up. A commentator mentioned a tactic.

The idea behind the tactic is to hoof the ball and keep the opponent out of your half and keep it in their half.

    What I have so far:

    Hit Early Crosses

    More Direct passing

    Higher Tempo

    Counter-Press

    Distribute Quickly with Longer Kicks.

    Prevent GK distribution

    Press far more urgently.

    Higher Defensive Line with Offise

    Tighter Marking

    Much Higher Line of Engagement.

    Mentality Defensive or Cautious.

As for Roles and Duties my team has to go with a 4-3-3 with DM.

So, I know I want to play with a BWM, but what else?

  5. Here is a topic I do not think I have seen anyone mention. What do you do during the lost seasons when you have no chance of winning?

    Example:

In my current save I got promoted from English League One to Sky Bet Championship in first season (I realize now this was to early). I have stretched my Payroll as far as it will go to $7 million. Other teams average $26 million with highest at $60 million. My team, compared to other teams just isn't that good. My team is way outmatched and way outgunned and there isn't any money in the coffers to bring anyone in. As I told a friend I have a great League One team, the problem is I am in the Championship.

Board says fight bravely against Relegation and gives me a grade of C despite a record of 1 win, 14 draws, and 12 losses. (22nd, 23rd, and 24th, get relegated and I am 23rd). It is to the point now that I look at draws as a good result.

How do you keep Morale high when you are loosing so much? (Currently my morale about bottom).

So what should I be working on. Scouting is obvious. Should I do away with any Match Preparation and set training to work on other sets of attributes during training?

  6. Like the title says.

My teams moral is great, all in the green with up pointed arrows, and I do not think it can get better. I have won 7 of my last 8 games and are currently 2nd in the league.

We have 6 games left and play (18 points) and we play the #1 team in the next to last match. I figure if we just get 10 more points we can ensure automatic promotion.

So, is it worth it to have a team meeting and tell the team to push for promotion?

From previous years of playing I say no, the only thing that could happen is I make someone mad and moral goes down. But am I missing something?

Best bet would be to have a look at a video by @Rashidion YouTube. The guy is a genius and, after watching his video (albeit for FM20), I was able to effectively use both overlap and underlap to get my tactic working wonders.

Yeah. I watch his videos all the time. I consider him the master of tactics, but sometimes I want the "Tactics for Dummies," book and he is writing master thesis.

I'm still toying with best application of these myself, but a couple of the ideas I have picked up on:

    1. Both underlap/overlap will reduce the mentality of the winger on the relevant side while increasing the mentality of the fullback. So, one reason to use either one is just to get the mentality effect. That can be helpful, for instance, if you want your team to build up a bit slower and get more people involved in the attack
    2. Overlap will tend to push the winger inside, while underlap will have the opposite effect. So, one reason to choose one or the other is to get that effect on the winger
    3. Underlap can provide a useful means of generating an overload. I think the typical example is something like a Mezzala, an inverted winger, and a fullback/wingback all on the same side. Underlap would encourage the inverted winger (or whatever role he has) to look inside where he will find both the fullback AND the mezzala

Those are really great things that I had not considered. I did know about the Mezzala though.

  9. I understand what the team instructions Overlap and Underlap do. Overlap causes players to hold onto the ball and look for a player, such as a FB, going wide. Underlap causes the players to hold onto the ball and look for a player making a run, not in the wide areas, but through the middle.

The question I want to know when is an appropriate time to use them?

Is it as simple as, "They are defending Narrow, so I will go wide with Overlap." Is it as simple as "Well, I have a good FB so I will go with Overlap."

What are your clues that it is time to use these team instructions?

  10. Recently in my save I had a huge game late in the season. My team sitting at #2 versus those guys sitting at #1. I decided for this game I would watch in "Full Match" mode. (I usually use either extended or key.)

Wow. First, the match engine is beautiful and was great to watch. Then, as the manager being able to look up my what information I could get a a touch, while the game was still running, made me really feel like a manager. Then being able to look at the analytics only at halftime and decide how to give my halftime pep talk was really good.

For big games I will watch on Full Match mode, but I like doing Extended, but it you haven't done FM21 on Full match yet you should.

  11. So, after my Beta save ended in disaster I decided to start a proper save.
I like starting small and building myself up so I didn't give myself any badges and only a Sunday player. I expected to get a job in the Vanarama National, or the Vanarama National North or National South. I started the game up July 2020 and realized there was only a couple of jobs available. After I didn't get any of them I was just about to speed ahead to Christmas when Wigan in Sky Bet League One came calling. In the interview I agreed to whatever they wanted, but figured a no name had no chance at the job. I was wrong. I got the job. My jaw dropped. I have no transfer budget, my payroll is completely used up, but luckily all they want is for me to avoid a relegation battle.

Since I am so much a no name my leadership support is listed as very poor. Team talks are a chore, because even though I am saying the right things, the players don't pay attention to me. I decided on a tactic and then go back and forth experimenting, (Wing Play, but I am more of a Control Possession or Tiki-Taka guy). During this time we are not doing good and even loose 4 games straight. I am above relegation, but things are rocky. Finally I decide on a modified Wing Play tactic and we start winning. (The Encourage shout is the new Demand More). \

From October to January we do not loose any league games so as the transfer windows open I have an A+ rating with the board, we sit in 3rd place, and my leadership support has built up to "average." But there are problems. I have 0 transfer budget, I am $150K over my payroll, and my starting CD and starting MC, who are on loans, are leaving. The CD I decide not to sign so I can extend the MC loan. But he is from Swindon, currently next to last in League One ready to get relegated, and they will not deal.

He has 7.0+ average rating and I figure I need about $250K to get him on transfer. So I ask the board to increase the transfer budget. My inbox shows that they reject the increase, but there is a note that they are willing to hear me out if I want to discuss it with them. I figure why not.

I go to discuss it with them and the board screen opens and the President says they are not interested in increasing the amount. I am given a couple of choices and I think I clicked on meeting ambitions or something. At this point the President said he would increase the transfer budget and did I agree with the amount or did I want to negotiate. Now here is a problem. Nowhere could I see an amount listed. I did not try clicking off the board screen, but the amount either was mentioned or was mentioned so quickly that I did not see it. Since they have they have increased my budget, I figure it is probably for a couple $100K, which is what I need and decide not to press my luck and argue for more.

I end the meeting and go to my transfer screen to find out how much money they gave me.

They increased my transfer budget to $4.89 million. $4.89 million!!!! That is like half the clubs savings.

They gave me the keys to the Ferrari

  12. So, I am early in my second season with my team.

My young STC hasn't been scoring and hasn't really been playing well. My star Inverted Winger that should be playing great is also not playing well. So, I go in and discuss with them and criticize their performances. Also, during the pre-match locker room briefing I single out the STC, point my finger and tell him that I expect a good performance.

    The Result:

STC gets a hat-trick within the first 35 minutes and the Inverted Winger gets a goal and a 7.0+ rating.

    Is it coincidence?

  13. 1- Get rid of the white screens during scouting. If it is a dark skin, keep it dark.

2- Let us leak stories to the press. Give us a menu item to point to.

3-Let us train specific attributes. I do understand that not every attribute should be allowed to be trained. But let us choose 3-4 attributes that get trained.

    During the Match

1- Allow us to shout at the referee.

2- Long time wanted, let us review the replay of Red Cards and when Penalty kicks are given. It does me no good to see a replay of a penalty kick.

3- The Dugout/Assistant advice should be a button and always available. When would my assistant not be available during a match? In the same way I should always be able to see information on weather and pitch condition.

4-Having the players at the bottom of the match screen is brilliant. However, it needs tool tips. When I hover over a player I should get a tool tip that gives player condition and body language in words.

  14. So, I am managed to take the QPR into the Premier League.

I easily have the lowest payroll. The Board only wants me to "Fight bravely against relegation." After 7 games I haven't won a game, but have 3 points and the Board are happy with the results on the pitch.

Here is the the thing, 25 minutes in I will either have 1 or 2 goals the the other team won't have any. I won't change anything and about 80+ minute all of a sudden my defense falls apart and they score 2-3 goals.

Do I really need to just go full defensive?

  15. Yes, I have scene the American Football threads.

I find them interesting, especially since I am a HUGE American Football fan. (My Chiefs finally won the Superbowl). I often, in my mind also equate Football things to American Football, but haven't taken it so far as to write anything down or think of it as an entire system. I have been to busy trying to think Football.
