I am not sure they can top FM22.  It may be the best sports management simulator ever created.

When it comes to ME, they'd better top it. Because otherwise FM21 will be the last FM I'll be playing. Managing in lower leagues is not possible for me in FM22, because I simply can't stand watching two lower league teams getting 700+ passes with over 90% accuracy all the time.
But if they fix that and don't introduce anything else game-breaking like that, then I'll definitely buy FM23 sometime after the final patch.

  2. I finally bought FM22, but did that without checking the discussions. I really shouldn't have, since that was a wasted 33 euros.
After watching my first two matches between Swedish lower division teams, where both of the teams had almost 700 passes with over 90% accuracy, I went back to FM21 and uninstalled FM22. In 26 years this is the first time I've had to do this, since never before has CM or FM been this unplayable after the final patch.

I have no doubt this will be fixed in FM23, but I'll never again buy the newest version without checking this forum.

  3. I'm having exactly the same problem with FA Trophy, and I have a theory. In your case, your first FA Trophy match was the 2nd round match, so you had fulfilled the expectation even before the match. In my case, I was also expected to reach the second round but I'm managing Wealdstone so my first match was a 3rd round match.
After losing that 3rd round match, I noticed that I had apparently failed to reach the second round...

I have a a feeling that the game doesn't realize you've already reached the round when you start the competition from that required round or later.

I have uploaded my save, filename is Mika Hakala_20210711.fm. The save is from few days before the 3rd round match.

P.S. I'm using a "real name fix" in my save, but no other non-SI database changes.

Fantastic post - it's ridiculous that such obvious match engine flaws have made it into the end product. It's like a car manufacturer spotting a fault in its Engine Management System, but continuing the production line in nothing but blind faith that it won't be noticed.

No it is nothing like that. It's more like a car manufacturer spotting a fault in its engine management system, then trying to fix the fault and making a recall only after the fix has been carefully tested.

And car manufacturers have certainly released models with much bigger problems - not that the car analogy would actually have anything to do with computer games.

Can you imagine paying a plumber to install a new boiler and when it’s not heating up as much as it should he says “Ah well it’s just not that simplistic.”

If the boiler is not heating because of the way it is designed, then yes I can easily imagine just that. The plumber will not start changing parts in an installed boiler without first making sure what other effects the parts might have.

What I can't imagine though, is what the eff people are thinking when they're making these comparisons..

I cant dictate to other people how to conduct their business, but probably this is clear point about how to fix this problem :)

anyway as I said - one real problem for me - I bougth different ME version and I want to play this one

I'm almost certain that SI would love to have a bigger testing team, if you pay their salaries.

Regarding the ME version, if you'd ever played any previous version of FM, you would have known that the match engine usually changes with every patch, and the final ME version comes with the final patch. You are not buying any particular ME version, you buy the game and by doing so you accept that there will be updates.

So you thought the FM20 ME sucked went back to a final build of FM19 only to decide naw am going back to FM20 where I originally couldn't stand it that much I went back to a previous FM, once again your the one whos in denial, why would I want to play a previous FM if the match engine was worse lol.

It's you're, not your. And yes, I tried FM19 and went back to FM20 since FM19 ME sucked even more. You may like it better, but that's your problem and not mine. "lol"

@HUNT3RIt's feedback on FM20 to say that its match engine is better than the final FM19 ME, is it not? Although I agree that not very detailed feedback, sorry. I'll shut up now.

just when I think Jurgen Klopp cant get more impressive, finding out he has won the UCL and sits on top of the EPL when his central defenders aren't even up to Welsh amateur level is truly astounding

Looks like his defenders can't manage 1v1 situations as well as Welsh amateurs, anyway - at least in FM20. I've also never had any problems with 1v1 conversion rate, and I've played only with lower league teams in FM20 (except Singapore Premier League, but it's crap anyway).

My own experience and comments in thread have made me suspect that higher level teams struggle with 1v1s MORE than lower level teams, but there isn't enough data from lower league managers for me to be able to make such assumptions. And if there is, I haven't noticed that.

Also, this isn't really a fix. Doesn't matter how quick your defender is if he stand still to give the forward a head start to the ball every time. the issues with the Me are that, seeing the problems on the pitch resulting from unrealistic scenarios destroys any sembelenace of "simulation" where you try to apply real world solutions to problems

You need to get a better defender, because in my game even Welsh amateur defenders don't do that.

I think the problem is, not to say a time frame. Ok, they are looking for a fix. But when? Until Christmas? Maybe in January? Or we should not expect for a hotfix until March? If SI at least declare a estimated date, people set their expectations with this in mind.

I'd guess that it's almost impossible to give any timeframe, because even the minor changes to one aspect of ME can have unexpected effects elsewhere. And after fixing those, who knows what else they'll bring up elsewhere.

@KUBI Have a look around on the forum as well as on Steam, and you will see this is a general problem.

I am happy to hear that you enjoy the game, but for me and others it is broken, and it will for sure be my last year with Football Manager if the fix isn't released soon.

If you mean 1v1s, then it is not a general problem. I'm certainly not the only one who doesn't have an issue of too many 1v1s, so for me and others the game is not exactly broken. Which also means that this is at least partly a tactics problem.

indeed, but we all see things from different angles. For me, that is just not good enough despite the fact that I can appreciate your good will to help (when the nature of advice doesn't actually infuriate me :D ). However, your and mine behaviour stems from differences in how we see things in general. It is just people. For some of us, nothing short of perfect will ever be good enough. Not just in FM but in general. That doesn't mean anyone is coming with an idea to make others' life miserable not that one approach is better than the other. Just different ways we pereive and process the world (and games) around us.

The day when FM match engine does not have anything unrealistic that needs to be dealt with the means the game gives us, is also the day when the match engine is run by a true AI. Before that, someone will always be complaining. And probably even after that...

This is just a great post, and should help setting our expectations for what the ME is/can become, while unfortunately killing the immersion that we are a tactical guru when all we are doing is finding some exploits in the ME. This is the reason why several times in the past I suggested that the roles should be gone from the game eventually, and let the attributes rule how a player will act in the ME. I have no idea how and when that can be achieved, but it should be the end goal one day if you are going for realism.

I don't know if you're intentionally over-simplifying what you want, but it's impossible to let just attributes rule how players act. You need to be able to give instructions, and the roles are an easy way to give a certain set of instructions.

Players have high WE / Decisions? If not they won't work towards the philosophy of the team or will do head scratching things.

Did u have be more expressive / more disciplined?

Not many players with Decisions over 10, and all except one player in midfield/attack way under that (5-6). Could be a factor, then.

Didn't use more expressive/disciplined, never needed that in FM19 or any previous versions. Maybe it's time to try "more disciplined".

Well I must say something positive about the ME. It is very sensible to tactic changes and I love that, meaning that even the minimal modification it gets reflected straight away in the performance of the team.

Curiously, I feel that FM19 in its final ME version was better in this regard. I agree that the tactic changes make a logical and visible difference, but there's also too much behaviour that my tactical choices would not allow. And this is in situations where there would be a possibility to do what my tactics ask for, but the players just ignore their instructions.

I suspect that it could just be that the learning curve of tactics is longer in FM20, meaning that it takes longer for players to learn my tactic. So maybe I should stick with it and see whether the situation improves, so far my patience has ended after 5-6 competitive matches.

@herne79 I know that it is a issue that is logged, and SI is working on a fix, but it has been too long now. First 3 weeks (4 weeks incl. the BETA) with match engine lag, and now this issue making the game unplayable for 2 weeks, so it has been 5 weeks now. It simply takes too long for a game that is released once a year, if it is not playable for the first 2 months.

The game was released less than 4 weeks ago, so where do you get the 5 weeks from?

I feel that it's much harder to get the team to do what you ask them to, but it might also be that I played with a much better team in FM19. But still the matches feel a bit too random. If I play against a much better opponent, I can easily keep them from scoring and create chances myself, but they usually end up winning with pure luck - or so it feels like. I don't think the match engine is broken, it just feels a bit 'off', unlike FM19 did.

1v1s: While viewing the game, whenever players are on a 1v1 run, they NEVER score. Even the top most prolific finishers. These 1v1 animations often begin with a single player on a counter attack dribbling the 'ENTIRE LENGTH' of the pitch like superman (even slow paced players) and hittng the ball against the keeper. So it's become so obvious that during key or extended highlights, I can pre assume and be correct that it will be a miss if I  see a player starting on a run to dribble the entire field.

It's interesting that so many players seem to have this issue, and then my players score 30% of 1v1 situations. Is this maybe something that weaker teams are actually better at?

    Just watching the Liverpool game.

Both those goals just scored are completely impossible to replicate in the engine.

If you're really talking about Salzburg vs Liverpool game, then you are wrong. The first goal I've seen in FM19, or at least a goal very closely like that. The second goal I've seen on FM20, although the goalie was a bit more passive there.

I have not seen the weird obsession of hitting the side net of the Goal excessively though i dont play with wingers as i only use 2 Striker Formations that are supported by central midfield Players.

Even my Wing backs rarely hit the side net - i see a ton of very bad shots that miss wide and far and in any hilarious way or be blocked and Neuerlike GK wordclass saves amass.

I use wingers with a lone striker, the emphasis in my tactic is on wing play, and I still don't see any shots from wingers hitting the side net. I also don't have any problem with wingers refusing to cross, their first choice always seems to be crossing.

I think i'm done with this game for now.

Just lost against Chelsea with Liverpool in 2022-2023, we have similar quality players in each team.

6 shots - 3 in target for them, 17 and 11 in target for me. 1-0 of course.

My tactic works perflectly during the game, i don't know how many times my wingers, midfielders, striker got the ball, and pass it to the box to box (Milinkovic-Savic), to another winger (Salah), who ran to the goal behind defenders, one vs one, and the shot is two miles away from the target or right on the goal... They don' have any intelligence, don't try a lob, never dribbling the goal, no they just shot like no brainer bulls, straight ahead, right on the goal.

How could it be a tactic issue ? There is no instruction who'd have an effect like "shoot like world class players you are supposed to be ?" Really I had the impression i was the manager of my neighbourhood team, a bunch of forty year old men who shot strong without thinking.

I don't talk about corners and free kicks, it's impossible to score for a player with his head on this sequences since 20.2, the ball always goes 1km away from the goal.

Tired, really tired, it was far better before 20.2, the only good thing that it changed is that wingers do not try to shot from weird positions anymore.

I am aware that we can't always win, but really can you imagine Liverpool miss 7 or 8 one versus one during the same game, with the players doing exactly the same every time ? It's fuc**** frustrating.

PS : sorry for my english

Looks like the lower level teams are much better at 1-on-1s, which is interesting. I play in Singapore Premier League (yeah, technically not a lower level), and my players are scoring from about 50% of clear 1-on-1s. And they don't always just blindly shoot, many times they take a couple of steps to the side and then shoot - and these they've never missed so far.
