Copa del Rey (Spanish Cup) Winners 2010 icon_cool.gif

Valencia won there first Cup under Savio, It might have been scrappy although both Valencia and Betis had chances it took a single bit of class in Villa (this season’s top goal scorer) to score the winning goal…..

Manager Savio was delighted

“This was just the tonic we needed bringing a Cup back and helped push for second place in the league. The Lads done well and deserve all the credit. Good league position was important but let’s face it you don’t win anything for second place and this Cup you could see means a lot to both the club and fansâ€

The League

A Very Disappointing season with lack of form being a major factor, we finished 2nd to Barca and will need to make a jump in quality this season to compete with them. The Manager has an Idea who he would like and with thirty million plus spent on Sergio Aguero (Young Spanish Player of the Year) he is progressing slowly.

The Squad

Stefan Kießling, Nikola Zigic and Caneira were sold on for 15M with major signing Sergio Agüero for 28M Plus and Trejo for 6M added. After a disappointing season Kießling moved on and the Manager knew it was a risk but with only a hit of 2m lost worth a try. Huntelaar is the Managers new hope.

New additions are expected with the Manager turning his attention to his defence. Rumour has it Depo’s Riki was about to sign on the dotted line after accepting Valencia’s offer before the Manager got a mystery call begging him to send him back to Depo… Riki reported he had heard crying down the phone…… icon_biggrin.gif

A stunning run to 4th in the league and the chase was on. Over the last few furlongs, Valencia and Real Madrid began to drop points and Los Blanquillos began to dream of greater things. It appeared that the 4th automatic place in Europe was going to come down to Depo or Zaragoza, with Zaragoza to pay Depo at their haunted pitsh.

Well, it is remains a bogey pitch, as Martinez walked away, not quite knowing what to make of a 1st half display that allowed the lethal finishers of Depo to score 4, with Milito and in particular Garcia, firing blanks all afternoon. It was not to be and Depo lept over Zaragoza into 2nd at that point, with Zaragoza dropping to 5th, 3 points behind Real with a game in hand. However the head to head was in their favour, and it would take another Real slip-up and a clean sweep of points to allow Zara back into 3rd.

Real did indeed slip-up in the last 3 games, however the defeat to Depo appeared to have wiped the floor with the Zaragoza players, and some poor performances saw the team secure 5th spot. Martinez was not a happy man, though media predications had forecast 5th, he was in no mood for placating when spoken to by Aragon SportRadio:

"Bloody abysmal, I work my socks off all season to get them into this position, and they turn in performances like that, trust me there's gonna be changes around here, whether some of these guys like it or not. The clubs £20m in debt, and they play like a bunch of pub players on a brewers outing, mark my words, some of these are out the door."

Martinez appears to have been serious, when he said changes were to be made, the highest profile casualty being Pablo Aimar, a move firmly backed by this station as the boy is surely past his sell by date and was a massive underperformer. Additionally, Zapater moved on to AC Milan for a pricely 12m and 15%, allowing some of the debt to be reduced. To offset the loss of this club favourite, Martinez has swooped to bring in the mercurial Julio Baptista and the lightning quick Jefferson Farfan on frees. With right back fairly nailed down, Martinez made a move for Filipe, who out of contract at bankrupt Deportivo, opted to stay in Spain rather than join up at Porto.

The financial situation improved somewhat when the club received 18m in grants for who knows what, and is currently on the plus side for money. Aragon SportRadio believes that Martinez will continue to carry out his threat to axe a number of high profile underperformers and promote a number of the talented B team to the main squad.

Rumours continue to circulate around the region as to who these players might be, almost certain to be aske will be Ewerthon and Garcia, who have not performed at all. With Thiago beginning to settle, Celsinho could come to the fore, and with Baptista and Bueno coming in from Real Mardid, Martinez appears committed to blending youth with experience in all areas. Fans favourite, Diego Milito, has vowed never to leave the club, and Martinez is unlikely ever to sell him, preferring to retain his influence around the place.

Midfield is another area, where changes are certain to be made, with the ageing Matuzalem a likely candidate for the axe. Martinez has already secured the signature of Crosas from Barcalona on a free, and with Gabi returning from Depo, along with Generelo, Martinez will surely look to Vertonghen to prove himself this season.

Wide players at the club now inlude, D'Alessandro, Oscar, Augusto, Farfan and Lafita, with a number of younger players beginning to blossom whilst on loan, there my well be players shed in this area.

At the back, it would appear, Castillo and Flano's days are numbered, with both Zuiverloon and Ratinho due to fight it out for the RB slot and undoubtedly Filipe jumping ahead of Paredes at LB. Gorkhan and Cesar Arzo established as the main partnership, Pearce begining to get game time, Chus Herrero may be offloaded.

Aragon SportRadio understands that Martinez will be sitting down with the coaching staff this week and assessing the squad, the likeliehood of this meeting may well be a complete overhaul in the first team squad at La Romereda.

Stay tuned!

After being tipped to not get an European place by many mangers, mainly managers of small clubs like Recreativo....sorry ex managers, Depor and Fernandez managed to leap frog Zaragoza and clinch 4th and ensure Champions League football will be in the Coruna town next season.

The run in up to the Zaragoza game had gone exactly how it was planned, as Depor won 4 games on the bounce to leave them 3 points ahead of Zaragoza, with Zara holding a game in hand and the better goal difference. $ goals later and champions league football was secured, as Depor ran amuck causing the Zara defence no ends of problems. And the defence did a stellar job of stopping Diego 'the past it master' Milito and Sergio 'not the one who plays a non sport' Garcia.

A 1-1 draw with Espanyol and a 1-0 loss to Real Scoidead hindered the Depor steam train somewhat as Real Madrid finished just above them, and had Depor won both matches, like they were expected to, they would of infact finished 2nd. But after two middle table finishes, 4th was a huge step up and next year it will be a hard task for them to stay up there with the so called 'big boys'.

Fernandez has yet again ignored the suggestions that he buys too many players in the summer which causes the team to underperform in the first few games. Bringing in 13 new players, however 9 of these players were infact brought 'for the future' and have since been farmed out to the feeder clubs of Depor. Of the 4 new signings who will look to break in to the first team, there seems to be only one big signing, with the free transfer of Pablo Aimar being completed from Zaragoza, after claims that Martinez rubbished his abillites and claimed he was past it, Fernandez released a comment over these comments;

"Martinez said that? That's a bit rich coming from him. But as the old saying goes, One man's trash is another's treasure."

Niko Kranjrac also joined on a free from Portsmouth, Ilan joined from St Etinine having been one of Europe's top scorers last season, and Berzigens joined from Liverpool. So for the 2nd year running Fernandez has spent a grand total of £0.

Transfer rumours have been thrown about in recent weeks, the main 3 involving Valencia, Trejo is heavily tipped to make a return to Depor on a seasons long loan, and maybe joining him, Mata. The third and totally absurd rumour being that during the close season Riki was set to join Valancia, we here have received word from the backroom staff at Depor that this is a load of tosh. Espically about the mystery caller crying and begging down the phone to Valencia manager Savio. Fernandez came out to clear these allegations from the air;

"No one from the club cried to Savio, we are all proper men we don't cry, these allegations are false and Riki is infact happy with the club and never wanted to leave."

Riki appeared shortly after and released his comment with Fernandez standing next to him;

"Yeah it was Fernandez, he was the one who cried down the phone, I was about to sign for Valencia after having their bid accepted by the recivers, but my contract was torn up after Savio claimed he just wanted to check something."

Fernandez then ran off crying, so much for being a proper man.

On the note of recivers, Depor were officially annouced as bankrupt as the club slipped to £30 million in debt. With no chance of a £30 million bid for any of the players or a takeover happening the club could be in dire striaghts.

That seems to be all anyone can say for the Depor season and it looks like we here in Courna could be in for a very intresting season.

Next week how the season was a complete bore, Fernandez was sacked and the Depor team all died after a mystery suicide bomber, just after Fernandez was sacked, blew his load inside the stadium.

...incoming message from the Job Centre...

Heylo.

My sources have told me during my short holiday in Norway that I have been sacked and that I have been given the job in some place called......Huesca? Huerta? I dont know. I'll find out when I phone the board. That could be an interesting phone clal now that I think about it. "Hello, what is the name of the team I am managing today?"

I may have to think about the way I ask that.

Finding the place will be hard considering I don't know the name of the place and if I can't find it on the map I am unlikely to get there.

I am planning to leave this centre of jobfinding in the next few days and will find my way there somehow.'

Something tells me this is going to be a very interesting season....

Well, what have I got to say about the start of the season so far, bit like a prossies knickers, ups and downs really. First couple of games very poor, then going on 4 straight wins, followed by a mixed bag of rubbish!

The midfield that had seemed to be gelling together nicely decided to throw in the towel for a few games, defenders went on strike and even the reliable Pletikosa had an off period. However by the end of the session, and yet more tweaking (Oh how I love 08, and the need to re-tweak every few games) we climbed back to just outside the top.

Qualification for the knock-out phase of the Euro looks possible and all barring an extreme whupping by Liverpool and Frankfurt going goal crazy in their last game, we should make it. Would all have been so different, if the team had not decided that the home tie against Udinese was not worth turning up for losing 1-0 and throwing the group in their favour instead of ours. We'd have been through with a win their!

Like veryone who is not rich, looks like it's going to be a bit of a struggle to maintain momentum, not being helped by D'Alessandro and Gabi refusing to re-sign new contracts and the club being 16m in debt. (A lot less than Deportivo, but worrying in any case)

An encouraging piece of news was that the chairman is likely to stand aside, hopefully, any new owner will provide sufficient funds to enable the club to move forward. But we wait and see. As with all things Spanish, tomorrow never comes quick enough!

Second Cup Win!

Valencia take Super Cup win over Barcelona with a narrow 3-2 win on aggregate. Manager Mambo was delighted to life his second cup. Quoted by the Media “This is a great way to start the new season, we still need to improve to be at Barcelona’s level both as a world class eleven but more importantly as a world class squad.

Squad News

Manager Mambo finally got his man in Left back Armand Traore for 13 million a player he believes will only improve with him going to be the first choice at the age of twenty-one. The Manager has identified two players he will concentrate in bringing in, with rumours one or two surprise departures at the end of the season.

The Manager

The Manager responded on Radio to the Question of Title credentials buy indicating that he feels his first eleven is only two players off being truly world class and this would certainly be addressed. Also reported was that Riki was again the centre of attention, This seems to be only paper talk although a cab driver phoned in to confirm he had actually had Riki’s agent in the back and both player and club had accepted what Valencia were offering, Rumours were that only 100K was enough to start talks with the player. icon_biggrin.gif

Champion’s League

We top our group with Chelsea on level points at eleven, we effectively knocked Glasgow Rangers out of Europe and are through to the last sixteen with only 3rd Besiktas to play.

League

After some great performances we trail Barca by seven points after fourteen matches. After loosing to Barca and Betis our league position and title hopes took a bit of a bashing. The Team and Manager showed great spirit to come back from two down to Depo to fight back and win with Uche securing all three points on the 85th minute. Manager Mambo takes some credit with his tactics being spot on for the second half for a Depo tactic that loves to be in control and attacking but poor if attacked and on the back foot. Mambo has a truly dynamic squad and can change things easily.

Disappointing doesn't go half way to describing Depor's performances so far this season as they sit a very lowly 15th with only 3 wins all season. This is a big come down from the 4th place finish last year as normal service is resumed in A. Coruna.

It looks like that Fernandez is on his way out of Depor as he was reportedly said to had offered his services to Getafe and Sevilla, who both turned him down at the door, much to the hilarity of Martinez and Mambo who were sitting on their high horses on top of a barrel roll of money, well Mambo was anyway. Reports have come in that Mallorca are set to sack their manager and appoint Fernandez with in the coming weeks have upset many of the Depor faithful who see Fernandez as some sort of God.

Europe has been slightly kinder to Depor and Fernandez as they have secured 3rd place and a Euro cup place, in their European Champions Cup group with 1 game remaining. Although they have only won 2, both against Spartak Moscow, and have lost 3.

Reports of Riki leaving were dumbfounded however Fernandez has comfirmed that Valencia are contiually looking at a player who by all means would never get in the team ahead of players like Villa, Auguero, Trejo, Uche and Huntaleer. Fernandez also confirmed that Riki infact rejected Valencia as he saw them as a step down from Depor, and inistied that Riki would only leave to join Fernandez at his new team. And the cab driver that claimed to have had Riki and his agent in the back of his cab was mysteriously found shot dead in the alley just behind Depor's training ground.

Halfway through the season and Martinez reflected on the story so far during an interview with Aragon SportRadio.

Martinez: "Bit of a shaky start, as the new boys got to know everyone, and to be honest, how best to utilise them. We've started to put some decent performances together though and are progressing nicely."

ASR: Will you be looking to bring anyone in?

Martinez: "Well, you know, we have a new board and the debt has been restructured, so we can move forward, but, to answer your question, I am unlikely to bring anyone in. In fact, we are probably keep faith the group we have, and even during the summer, we shouldn't be looking to buy, as the likes of Vertonghen, McKenna, Nielson and Nsue return from their loans having gained some valuable experience."

ASR:"That will certainly keep the board happy, but will they be good enough?"

Martinez:"I would never have brought these lads to the club, if I didn't think they'd be able to contribute. Let's be honest here, some of the "big names" just have not performed this season, and some are not getting any younger. We are NOT Barca, Real or Valencia and can afford to through money around. Much like Pablo Aimar last season, a couple of players may just find that their time here is coming to an end, and we have to look to the future. If that means, reducing an outrageous wage bill further and playing the kids, then so beit. I know I have the boards full backing in this!"

So Martinez left our reporter in no doubt as to what he perceives the future of the club to be, now whether Zaragoza will ever be able to produce it's own quality youth payers is another issue. Martinez was asked to comment on this aspect of the club during the recent interview and in his own inimitable style Martinez replied:

"If you don't have a good flowerbed, how can the seeds be expected to flower?"

Spanish Cup Final

After a closely fought Semi final round over the two legs we produced the goods to send Zaragoza spinning out the Cup. Mambo fielded his second string midfield and forwards for the second leg but credit to Zara for taking to the wire.

Squad News

The Manager brought both Okaka from Roma (now on loan) and future signing Genero Zeefuik from PSV who is signed for July over this period suggesting this is a Manager building for the long term.

The Manager

The Manager was interrupted by SportRadio reporter on his view of Martinez retort.

"If you don't have a good flowerbed, how can the seeds be expected to flower?"

Mambo responded

“I’ve been saying for a few seasons I’m sure his situation will improve after all there is plenty manure over there and some ready for the compost heapâ€

Champion’s League

Qtr Final with Chelsea our old group buddies to look forward too.

League

A Very disappointing season so far with us currently sitting fourth behind Betis, Barca and R.Madrid. Even with the top two dropping points its going to be a miracle to beat the second place of last season. With ten matches to go it’s a mountain to Climb.

The Fans did enjoy a 4-1 win over Deportivo with some of the home fans shouting “Are you Recreativo in disguiseâ€

What the Press Are Saying Today

Aragon SportRadio Zara Report

With the season's end fast approaching Martinez and Los Blanquillos lie in 5th position in La Liga, clear of 6th place Atletico Madrid and close enough to 3rd and 4th placed Betis and Valencia for all at La Romereda to be wondering whether either can be forced into a season's end slump, allowing Zaragoza to slip unnoticed into the fourth Champions League slot. Martinez himself is reportedly unconcerned at the activities within other clubs, preferring to focus on building towards next season. As previously reported on this channel, there are likely to be more outs than ins at Zaragoza during the close season, with Martinez preferring to bring though a number of younger fringe players to bolster the existing core of the squad.

The numerous changes made at the start of the season, and with the Spanish FA's decision not to allow B Team Registration, this channel believes that Martinez has already begun the re-education of the fans and board when it comes to expectation levels so falsely raised in the past. Defeat in the semi-final of the Spanish Cup to Valencia should no longer be seen as failure, but as a significant move forward, as Martinez, much like his mentor, Mr Wenger continued to play his younger players in these matches, despite the clamouring of the fans! A second leg win over Valencia provided the fans with a glimpse of the players they may be seeing on a more regular basis next season, and with a number of on-loan players putting in some great performances for their clubs (Nsue, Vertonghem, McKenna, Gavish and Cabrera) the club can look forward with some optimism.

Heraldo de Argon

Another season of financial chaos is how this newspaper views things at La Romereda. Martinez has not had the fullest of support of previous boards in his attempts to move this club forward, which we at Le Heraldo are delighted that the new board have restructured the debt in such a way as to allow the manager some financial freedom. Heraldo de Aragon are firmly of the opinion that the current training and youth facilities available at La Romereda are inadequate and these must be improved if the club are to attract top quality players and produce the homegrown talent so desperately required. Until that time comes, the pressure will remainson the scouting network to locate the finest young talent in Spain, Europe and even South America, and provide the manager with talented players relatively inexpensively. Martinez has consistently refused to pay over the odds for players, whether that be in fees, or in wages, thus the departure of some of the more flamboyant, and expensive, players in recent times, however despite this prudence, the finances in place continue to put a strain on the bank balance of the club. With many of the clubs in Spain in financial difficulty, and few of the squad attracting the interest of the rich clubs in Europe, it is unlikely that Martinez will be able to recoup anything i the transfer market. It may well be that for the next couple of seasons, Los Blanquillos will continue to release highly paid players for no return in order to bring finances to a manageable level.

Whilst this may not be to the liking of the Zara faithfull, they can be pleased with the amount of unseen work which has already taken place with a number of the youthful additions Martinez has brought to the club in the las three years beginning to make the breakthrough to the squad. For all those involved at La Romereda, the future holds some promise, and perhaps, just perhaps, some success.

Depsite a final finsih of 15th in the league, Fernandez was feeling very smug after the last game of the season at home to Real Betis. Who would of thought that just a year ago Depor were fighting for 4th place, instead this year they have been battling for 14th place. And Depor fans could be forgiven for having no hair left, as they pulled it out every time Baros or Nsue missed yet another one on one or open goal.

It wouldn't be until the last day that Fernandez and Depor shoed some class. Let me set the scene for you, with just 1 game left for the league 4th place was still up for grabs, Depor's rivals, come friends, come loanees, come parent club, Zaragoza were on 75 points with Betis on 73, the final day fixtures? Valencia v Zaragoza and Deportivo v Betis. Half time the scores were Valencia 0-2 Zaragoza and Deportivo 1-0 Betis, Fernandez thus sent a sniper team to Valencia and ordered them to shoot any good Zaragoza players, they came back with the same number of bullets that they had left with. Withing 20 minutes of the second half though Zaragoza were crying and begging Fernandez to help them, Valencia had scored 3 goals to lead 3-2, unfortunetly Fernandez wasn't feeling in a giving mood and so let Betis equalise with 20 minutes to go. Valencia would go on to win 4-2, meaning that Zaragoza had to rely on Depor to either win or draw with Betis. Betis chucked everything they could at Depor, but nothing was getting through, so on came Rafeal Sobis, withing 5 minutes it was 2-1 to Betis, the scorer? Sobis of course. On the 89th minute Betis had stolen 4th place and champions league football, or had they. With 4 minutes of added on time Zaragoza were crying in to their debts, then suddenly on loan left back from Zaragoza, Castillo, played a ball to on loan Zaragoza striker, Nsue, who dived in the area to win a penalty for Deportivo and give Riki, the world's best player, a chance to equalise and ensure champions league football for Zaragoza, and that he did slotting the ball in the right corner, and that was that as Depor had allowed the future Depor team to have champions league football.

We caught up with Fernandez after the match:

So Fernandez, you have got to be pleased with that result haven't you?

You would think so wouldn't you. I am in some ways. We outplayed a better team, we got a draw in a poor season, but come on how can anyone be happy when you help out Zaragoza, it just makes me feel dirty.

Fair enough, despite the league performances you did exceptionally well in the cups.

We did, getting to the semi finals of both the Spanish Cup and the Euro Cup would make anyone pleased, but when you get to them you at least expect to put up a fight. I mean we lost 8-2 to Barca on agg in the Spanish cup and 4-0 on agg to Benfica in the Euro Cup, ok foregetting we abasoulty dominated the latter game. Next year we will be focusing on the league and getting back to where we belong.

Of course, and rumour has it you have completed a major coup.

Yes we just completed the signing of Gael Givet for free.... oh you mean the signing of Klass Jan Huntelaar for £4m from Valencia. Yes a great signing, despite the fact we had to accept a buy back agreement with Valencia for the fee of £4m. I mean class is in his name.

There was also rumour of a bid for Diego Milito from Zaragoza, any truth?

Well everyone knows i am a keen admirer of Milito, we did have a £2m offer accepted and we met with is agents, but unfortunetly the cocknoses on our board only gave me 13k to offer in wages and i had to break the deal off, as long as i get 2m from my board in the coming weeks i am sure we will be looking to bring him to us, to join D'Alessandro who is joining us in the summer.

Finally, alot of managers have given their reporters some great words, have you got any?

What do i look like some kind of poet? **** off i'm not Poe.

How On Earth did it come to this?

The league finale was hotting up nicely as previously predicted, though those who cannot be named continued to win games playing the same 11 players every three days. THEM and THE OTHERS began to move away from Valencia, Betis and Zaragoza and it soon became obvious that the Spanish FA had contrived for the strangest of finishes to occur. But didn't Valencia go and scupper that by sneaking enough points to ensure third spot, leaving Betis and our beloved Zaragoza chasing down the third spot. It was soon to become obvious that Betis had payed off the FA, when the schedule revealed that two days after their CL final Valencia would be forced to play Betis! At this point, Zaragoza had one game left, 5 points clear of Betis, who had two to play, the re-arranged tie against Valencia and the Zaragoza trg team/retirement home Deportivo La Corrupt.

Voiciferous lobbying of the FA could not persuade them to change the Valencia tie, and having suffered the indignity of a defeat to THEM in the CL final, Valencia promptly put in the standard "lacklustre perfomance" we have come to expect playing two games in two days. And so it would, as the FA and their Betis backers desired, come down to the last round of matches. Zaragoza away to Valencia, who have become a bit of a bogey team in recent times, always just managing to nick a result, and Betis v Depo.

A quite stunning first 45 minutes saw Zara play the bling-bling-gang off the park, going two up at half-time, but conceding 3 goals in a ten minute period early in the second half seemed to suck the life out of the team, who gathered themselves together and began to play again, only to be caught on the break and lose a very even game 4-2. Thoughts turned to Depo, in particular D'Alessandro's, as he ponders the wisdom of accepting an offer from a club ostensibly used as everyone elses trg team and retirement home. Undoubtedly he'll be chatting to his good mate Pablo Aimar about taking the money and running!

Depo did their level best to scupper CL football for Los Blanquillos, but those loyal loanees were having none of it! And so Cl football returns to La Romereda, and we can only hope Zaragoza make a better fist of it than last time around, crashing out before the group stage, but yet again, Martinez brings European football to Zaragoza!

Scoop

It would also appear that Martinez has been playing with the local media and other interested parties in his constant insistence that their would be no new players coming in, and that the youngsters would be given the chance to shine at the highest level. It has just been announced at the weekly press conference that Martinez has confirmed the signing of two very highly rated Spanish player, Javi Garcia from Osasuna and Alfonso from Sevilla. Furthermore, Martinez stated in his press conference that he is probably on the look out for a CB, but that can wait as Duplus and Gavish are due to return from their loan periods.

The only speculation left for the reporters was who, in addition to D'Alessandro, would be leaving the club, bearing in mind a maximum of 25 registered players (none allowed from the B Team!). At this moment in time, it is highly likely that Gabi and Oscar are most certainly finished at the club, Chus Herrero has not featured this season, and some of the young Peruvians currently out on loan at Volendam and Albacete may be offloaded. With Castillo returning as a hero and Zuiverloon as back-up to Ratinho, Martinez may also look to offload FBs Paredes and Flano, whilst retaining the core of the squad, plus the promising youngsters. Rumours of Diego Milito's imminent departure continue to abound, and whilst remaining top scorer for the club yet again, it is believed by many, that this was solely down to the fact that Martinez wavered in requesting that he step aside. As club captain and talisman, has the time for legend that is Milito to move on?

The close season will certainly throw up a few interesting questions, and the answers will undoubtedly surprise us all, as no-one can ever be truly sure they understand Martinez's thought process. One of his more recent press conferences included the following:

"You don't continue to drive the 10 yr old Volvo, when you have a 2 yr old Lotus in the garage!"

The Manager

Savio Sat down at the end of season press conference and said simply he could sum the season that seen them reach the Spanish cup Final for the second season running, third in the League and second attempt at a European Final

"***Bugger***â€

He then said he was going to reflect on one of the most entertaining finishes to a season in his time in management by leaving for the Italian lakes as soon possible. It was rumoured that he was going to finished his book as advertised on the radio with the release of a few chapters in the local rag’s.

Mambo Broadcast

“Read my story, read how I defied the odds by not getting sacked, My hatred for all things Barcelona, my love affair with forwards and my desire to score both on the pitch and off it, My thirteen week affair with Miss Zaragoza and the revelation that is the back handed deals to get players on loan amongst Spanish clubsâ€

Spanish Cup Final

It was painful to loose as Cup holders, and that it was Barcelona made it doubly so! What more can you add but disappointed.

Squad News

The squad will have Betis forward Sobis Rafael on board for the new season. Five players were names in the European Dream Team - Hildebrand, Alexis, Vicente, Aguero and Silva. Expect a massive transfer.

Champion’s League icon_mad.gif

After knocking out both Chelsea and Manchester United but loosing valuable player out to long term injuries it came down to Valencia v Barcelona an old favourite.

We took the lead with a penalty but we had deserved it with the pressure we had put Barca under. We only had to last out a few minutes , was it our stand in goalkeeper that caused it or just Barca’s annoying luck to find the back of the net to take it to extra time. On the restart it was written in the stars, the fans knew it and Mambo knew it Barca would win it and did with an OG from Silva.

League

Another disappointing season finishing third, this squad is good enough if we could only drop that mid-season blip we seem to always have. Next season we hope to finally crack it, but then again Barcelona seem to have the luck of the gods. Not even a win over Zaragoza could cheer the fans, the management and the players at the end.

Outrage

So read the leader in La Heraldo De Aragon, as £22m was recouped as no fewer than 9 players were offloaded.

Out

Sergio Garcia, Oscar, Gabi, Paredes, Flano, Delibassic, Manco, Vertonghen and the biggest surprise of all Diego Milito. And with D'Alessandro having departed to Depo on a free, a huge step has been taken in reducing the wage budget, much as Martinez promised.

Milito's departure appears to have left Los Blanquillos supporters in a state of shock, as the man they named The Master had been a devoted servant to the club over the years, however as martinez indicated at his post season press conference, perhaps it was time to freshen things up.

Having allowed these players to leave would appear suicidal, however as MArtinez pointed out, only Diego had made any significant contribution during the season, and with Thiago and Goitom having bed in over the last couple of seasons, the core of the squad remains and has been strengthened in a couple of areas.

Ins

Only 4 new arrivals at the club to replace the 9 that left, which reinforces Martinez's belief that the squad did have strength in depth which needed game time to improve. The new arrivals included:

Javi Garcia and Alejandro Alfaro arrived from Osasuna and Sevilla on frees, whilst Martinez strengthened the backline with the capture of Mexican Omar Esparza and Andronic, a 21 yr old Serbian International from Red Star.

Other Squad News

Adrian arrived on a free at Xmas, part of then bankrupt Depo's clearout, whilst, Pearce, Bueno and Bozaglia have been promoted from the B team to flesh out a squad containing the talents of Celsinho, Farfan, Augusto, Baptista, Pletikosa and Cesar Arzo. Nsue, Duplus, Rafinha and Castillo will continue their footballing education away from La Romereda, this time at Sevilla, after having previous spells at Albacete and Deportivo.

Early Days

Having sneaked into fourth place in La Liga lst season, Real Zaragoza were drawn to face Locomotiv Moscow in the 4th round of qualifying for the Champions League, first leg away. With the "new" pairing of Thiago and Goitom up front, only Alfaro, of the new signings started in this match wch resulted in a 4-0 away win for Real Zaragoza.

Strangely out of sorts for the 1st league match against Real Madrid saw the team lose 3-0 with Martinez once again scratching his head at how Roninho can outjump every defender on the planet. The second leg of the CL qulifier, saw a number of the new/old debutants play their first competitive matches, and the changes obviously affected the rhythm, with a less than impressive 1-1 draw. The bonus is, most of the guys have now played and the second league match against Athletic would be a test of whether the lads were capable of getting a result, after a midweek Euro tie. A comfortable 2-1 win in the end, and Martinez left the ground a happy man.

"I feel the squad here is now younger, fitter and more eager than in recent times, it has a backbone of experience with Pleti, Turk and Baptista, and the exhuberance of youth with Bueno, Farfan and Celsinho. The real test of the season are still to come, however I am sure the fans will enjoy watching this squad develop over the next couple of seasons"

Asked for comments on finances, Martinez, for once refused to be drawn on the issue. Whether he remains mute on this subject remains to be seen!

The Manager

Savio looked down at his team sheet, he had amassed a very dynamic group of players, looking over the coaches reports he circled three first team players – this was going to be painful but will be needed, three top class players will have to move on for the good of the club. It’s a balancing act but Savio is not going to pass up a few big pay days before players get past it.

Spanish Press

The Press had witnessed Chelsea’s Avram Grant leave for the airport earlier from Valencia’s Training Complex leaving Peter Kenyon still allegedly in Valencia only to visit a Family friend. The Valencia Fans were still looking for answers as Roman Abramivch’s private jet returned to stay on standby on the Tarmac in Valencia.

Squad News

New Look

A poor 15th place finish last season saw Fernandez complete a reshuffle of the Depor team. Towards the end of last season, with nothing to play for Fernandez released experienced number 1 Dudu Auoute, who had refused to sign a new contract, Ilan and Adrian. And the new year saw countless new faces come to the revolving doors at Depor.

First off fernandez looked at the players he already had at Depor, Bouzanis, a free signing from Liverpool at the begining of last year would be the new number 1 with Benoit Costil his understudy. Gael Etock, the next Sameul Eto'o, looks set to break in to the team in the coming months, providing the other strikers suddenly get injured. And that was about it, staying in the team would be Spanish right back Antonio Barragan, the best player in the world Riki, Georgian centre back Zurab Khivnishvilli who signed a new contract taking a £5,000 wage cut to £46,000 thanks Zurab. Julian De Guzman, the Candian defensive midfielder, Thiago, former Barca younger, who isn't? Ruben De La Red, Niko Kranjcar and that was it.

In came the new faces, Andres D'Alessandro from the unofficial parent club, and Klaas Jan Huntelaar were the early signings and were expected to be the back bone to the squad. Centre Back Martin Skrtel came in on a free from Wigan, Klose came in to warm the bench from Bayern.

Then there came the big one, the big money was going out, it was big moolah, the big crunch, the godfather of all signings, my god do i have to spell it out for you. Arouca arrived from Inter and Torino, he was co-owned, for combined fee of £11m, for you pendentic people it was £5.5m going to Inter and, if you are not a good mathmetician, like the Zaragoza manager, £5.5m went to Torino. The Brazillian international midfielder, will be looking to set the league alight and show Javi Martinez what he is missing after he rejected Depor in favour of Valencia, i mean why?

You Want Some? Come Get Some

The start of the season saw Depor kick it off against Albacete away from home, and it was a comfatable 2-0 win as D'Alessandro showed he is worth the £40K he is on, as he scored a wonder goal jinking past 5 players before unleashing an unstoppable shot from the corner of the area, and it was wrapped up as Skrtel scored a simply brilliant header from an out swigning corner from that man D'Alessandro.

The second game saw Murcia travel to Depor, and this time it was Klaas Jan Huntelaar who headed in a beautiful cross from Antonio Barragan to give him his first goal in the Depor colours, although Fernandez was waiting by the phone after that goal went in, for the call from Mambo, who forced a £4m buy back agreement for Huntelaar in to the negotiaions.

And that was all we had before going to press, next week we focus on the future of the Depor youth who look to win their 4th youth title in as many years and look to equal the great Lemona youth of years gone by who won more than 10 youth titles in a row.

Expectations

The new owners, having assessed their early days of ownership called Martinez into the office and issued their demands for the manager:

"We expect to qualify for Europe through the league position in two years, we expect at least the quarters of the Spanish Cup this year, we expect CL group football, and hopefully enjoyment of the Euro Cup if you don't qualify for the knock-out stages. We hope this is acceptable and clear!"

"More than acceptable, Christ I thought you were going to ask us to win the bloody league!"

"Well, it would be nice, but unlike the previous occupants of these chairs, we actually realise that this club is in the second tier of Spanish sides"

Martinez left the office muttering to himself, "We can do this!"

Chapions League

Qualified for the group phase, so one expectation out the way, Los Blanquillos appear to have drawn a toughie, with AC Milan, Stuttgart and CSKA Moscow. After 3 matches, Zara sit top, with Milan and CSKA in 2nd and 3rd, all three teams on 6 points from 9, Zara having lost to Milan, whilst Milan lost to CSKA in Moscow. The return matches with Stuttgart and CSKA could prove decisive in the clubs progress in the group.

La Liga

11 games in and Zara sit in 5th, two recent defeats against Betis and Atletico spiked a good run for the team. Betis was particularly cruel, losing two goals in the 90th minute, which tbh, were the highlights of a particularly dull game ! ( icon_wink.gif Sooty) A 4-1 defeat to Atletico was even tougher to take as the Manager got lost on the way to the stadium twice (Damn router!) and the Assistant took over, promptly fielding an unfit team that should have been resting. But before Martinez could hit the eject button on the asst's seat, he was dragged off to the physio's room.

Spanish Cup

The Bad boys from Badalona await our heroes as the big teams enter the competition in the next round.

Settling In

The new lads appear to be settling in quite nicely and Thiago and Goitom have proved to be an effective partnership up top. Alfaro has impressed everyone so far, and Garcia is just beginning to put in some decent performances Esparza is showing that he can challenge Filipe at left back, whilst Andronic is proving to be the long term replacement for Gokhan. Added to the flair and artistry of Brazilians Baptista, Celsinho and Augusto, Farfans pace, the solidity of the two Spaniards Garcia and Crosas, the squad is showing a marked improvement from last season. (Note to self, you said that last season as well, before it went stupid at Christmas! icon_biggrin.gif)

All in all, looking good so far, however, picking the lads up after the Assts screw-up with the Madrid game is the next challenge. However the Asst issue will be fixed as soon as I get back to the office!
