What do I need to change?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

This is the first year I have tried to create my own tactics and not use plug and play setups. I wanted to have a long term save on the easier side so I picked The Spartans in Scotlands League 2.

Over the seasons I used a combination of 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1, altering them as I moved through the leagues. I won league 2 in the first season, I won league 1 at the 2nd attempt, and it took 3 attempts to win the Championship. I have now just completed my 2nd season in the SPL. During the first season, I suspect my rep was so low that no one gave me any respect and I somehow finished 2nd.

This is where the issue lies, this season I had a nightmare. I assume now teams no longer overlook me, hence my 6th placed finish. Now I know for The Spartans a 6th place finish is excellent. However, as I'm a noob at this, I have no doubt my tactical non-genius mind will be hindering the team somewhat. The annoying thing is I had a pretty successful Europa League campaign managing to qualify from the league phase, but I again assume this is down to teams overlooking me.

Can you guys have a look at the 2 tactics mainly used this season and see what improvements can be made? Please let me know if you need any additional details to help me out.

Some questions:

  1. How do you concede the most goals? Have you seen a particular pattern that the AI, regardless of opponent, that they use to score against you or beat you?
  2. Did you find any weakness in your team in terms of your tactics? For example in defence, in buildup or attack.

Thanks for the reply...

  1. I wouldn't say I've noticed a pattern as such, but I would say I have noticed crossing in many of the goals, where I've thought about adding the instruction to prevent crosses. I'd need to double check the data hub, I'll come back once I've had a look.
  2. Not so much, I do notice significant amount of loose/weak passes that either go straight to the opponents or are easily intercepted, which annoys me. I tried short passing to eliminate that but I can't say I've noticed any major difference.

I watch only on key highlights, sorry I can't be more indepth, plus my lack of tactical acumen is likely affecting my ability to observe the above.

On 4231, It does seem your front four is very forward and there's a gap between them and your back six. I wonder if you might consider switching some of them to a support role or have your AM come deep to pick up the ball from the midfielders?

Do you think having an AM on support would be better or maybe an AP on support, then change the DLP to a different role to prevent to many playmakers? I could also switch the wingers to support?

Okay thanks!

I will suggest some changes from what I know about FM24 ME.

  • First remove Play for Set Pieces from both tactics because this instruction will slow down your attacks and especially your counter attacks.
  • Remove Take Short Kicks to leave your GK more freedom in which way pass/give the ball.
  • Another thing to consider (at least for me) is to choose between Play Out Of Defence & Distribute To Centre-Backs. I know it’s obvious to use both of them if you want to play out from the back but sometimes is more rewarding when your GK kick the ball long for many reasons.
  • When you want to press higher then it’s more logical to use a higher defensive line so you compact the zone you have to press and don't leave too many spaces between your lines. So i suggest to remove Step Up More from both tactics and increase your defensive line to Higher or even Much Higher.

Now in terms of player roles I suggest the following:

  • 433
    • Change your AML to IF so you have more people in the box.
    • Use opposite duties of your right side which means W on support and WB on attack and instruct your W to Cut Inside With Ball.
    • Change your HB to DM/DLP. The duty here can be defend or support, it depends on your opponent.
    • And last change your MCL to BBM which is more involved in every aspect of the game.
  • 4231
    • Change your SS to AM on attack and instruct him to Take More Risks, Dribble More and Move Into Channels.
    • Change your HB to DM on support and tell him to Get Further Forward as you already have your DLP holding his position there.
    • For flanks use the same tips I said above for 433.

Thats it in general.

This is excellent, thank you. I'll make these changes just now and see how pre-season plays out.

Are these the tactics you used from league 2? I am currently playing in the lowland league looking for promotion. Like you I want to use something I have built.

For the second tactic, one of the two wingers, needs  to be an inverted to allow the wingback to run in space. Maybe also u should make the CM in support duty, or make the right wingback as a fullback. Cuz I think the Right side takes to much risk, that make the def. transition not ideal on that side.

Agreed on the AM change to either an AM (S) or AP (S). I think it largely comes down to what attributes this player has.

Yes, I think I would change the DLP to a CM perhaps as there are lots of creators in your team such as the wingers. I also wonder if you want to change one of your wingers to support so that your tactic is less symmetrical and would have some variations.

Yeah, the same tactics, slightly different roles and TIs when lower down though due to the level of player I tried to use as little TIs as possible and basic roles.

I had standard GK, no-nonsense CBs, FBs etc. I tried to imagine how I'd get a local junior team playing.

Excellent, thank you. Would you leave the left side as a wing back with the same duty? Just change the right?

Well no, it's OK for me. Maybe u should instruct the WB to be narrow, cuz the WInger will be close to the touchline, so the wingback provide a solution for him from a narrow position

I advice u to read this book about roles...
