autohoratio Posted September 7, 2019 Share Posted September 7, 2019 For this season there's a new rule for goal kicks; the ball is in play when it leaves the goalkeeper's feet, not the 18 yard box. Quite a few teams are now trying to play with several defenders inside the box at goal kicks and play the ball out from the back this way, inviting pressure from the attacking players closing down the defenders. Of course this doesn't always go to plan: for example Arminia Bielefeld conceded from a goal kick against Greuther Fürth and today Bulgaria messed it up against England. This led me to thinking how this rule would be implemented into the tactic creator and match engine. I think it would be necessary not just to have a "Play short goal kicks from within 18-yard box" toggle in the team instructions, but a trigger or qualifier for when exactly to do so vs. when to just take a normal goal kick as in previous years. In both of the linked examples of the short goal kicks going wrong, there were three/four defenders plus the goalkeeper being closed down by four attackers. This results in a space further up the pitch to easily clear the ball to, but for whatever reason the team kept trying to play out from the back. Without a trigger/qualifier/instruction to say "just clear it up the pitch" at a certain point, or if there are a certain number of attacking players ready to close the defence down before the kick is taken, there would be too much risk attached to the short goal kick for it to be of any use in the game. Another aspect I think would be required is to treat these short goal kicks as a set piece, and create an in-possession and out-of-possession variant just like with free kicks, throw-ins and corners where you can define how many defenders in the box and where to place him, how many attackers closing down and positions of other players on the pitch. If the defenders' positions are not precisely defined then there will again be too much risk to use the short goal kick.
