SPECIALIST IN FAILURE

A Career by Mike7077

No, not Arsene Wenger, but yours truly. Remember me, folks? I'm finally ready to attempt an FM14 career and would love to share it with you. My career threads tend to be very detailed, which means they don't move too fast. You won't see me in 2026 by this time next week! I work slowly and I pour a lot of effort into each post. Hopefully one or two of you will enjoy the ride, even if it plods along a little.

Countries loaded: Belgium, England, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Holland, Northern Ireland, Portugal, Ireland, Russia, Scotland, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine, Wales.

All nations loaded down to their lowest playable divisions.

Aims: I never play with specific targets in mind. I just want to play as realistically as possible. I will be starting unemployed and my reputation is set to professional footballer. I will apply for all available jobs at the start of the game and see what I get offered. Beyond that, I will try to move around fairly realistically, taking better jobs if I think it represents a better opportunity. Having no real targets makes for a more adventurous save, I feel. I have no idea where I will end up.

The only thing to say is that, having moved to Northern Ireland fairly recently, I wouldn't mind starting there as I now have a bit of an interest in the local league.

But we'll see what happens...

A Done Deal

Having been a professional footballer, I was offered jobs in a diverse range of places, from Belgium to Portugal to Russia. However, I always had my eye on the Larne job. I was keen to start in Northern Ireland and the job is an interesting one. The club plays in the second tier, but it has the potential to grow. I'd love to get them promoted and then stabilise them in the top flight. It'll be tough, though.

Welcome to Inver Park, Larne. Welcome to Larne FC.

It's a small club from a small, fairly scenic town. But as other clubs have shown, small clubs from small towns can do okay in Northern Ireland. The Belfast clubs may dominate, but in a country this small, there is always room at the top table for smaller sides. I believe that, if I'm given time, I can build a half-decent side here. A medium-term target should be to get established in the top flight.

Larne play their home matches at Inver Park. With a capacity of just 1,100, it's a small venue and would seem especially small should we ever go up. The club has been trying to push through plans for a new ground, so we'll keep our eyes out for movement on that. In terms of the level we're currently at, Inver Park looks okay.

Expectations: The board have given me no transfer budget to work with, but they are only asking me to finish in mid-table. I think this is achievable, although it's hard to say because I know so little about my squad. Most of the players are out of contract and I can't afford to offer them all new ones, but we'll go with what we've got. I'm sure most sides in the division are in a similar position to us. If I can meet the board's expectations and still be in the job next summer, maybe then we can start to think about how we mount a promotion push.
