ReggaeBwoy
What is the roles of the first team coach and assistant manager in FM 11 and how important are these roles?
SWaRFeGa
Assistant manager will take on the roles that you don't want to, and offer you advice about lots of thing. First team coach is completely different, just there to train the players in the first team.

BiggusD
Assistant: he does everything you don't want to, as SWaRFeGa said. 1st Team Coach: it is considered a "higher position" in the hierarchy than a mere Fitness/GK/Youth/Coach, because they don't deal with the kids. This means that economically and practically a Coach is preferable over a 1st team coach to you as a manager. However, some of the best coaches in the game only wants to be 1st team coaches.
