inswinging vs outswinging free kicks..

Recommended Posts

normally when setting up FK instructions i set a player with the opposite foot, so right footer on the left side FKs and i think that seems to work well when taking shots on goal, however something i've noticed is that when free kicks are taken with this set up (and the setting is on mixed), the ball 99% of the time, goes straight to the keeper.

have set up a bologna game and since i dont know the team that well, i left the FK setting alone and as its turned out im getting more crosses and a result, goals from said crosses than i did with the above set up.

you may think i have the setup wrong with the first team in the example or its a team with no FK specialists but its barcelona. you cant be telling me bologna have better free kick takers than barca :)

I tried this myself purely on the same thinking - shooting at goal it would be perfect but I have found that when they are not in a position to shoot at goal then it usually tends to be a wasted free kick and the ball ends up sailing out for a goal kick or straight into the hands of the 'keeper, just like what has happened with yourself. Since then, I have resulted in switching back to left footed players taking the kicks on the left and right footed on the right. I have done this with the corners as well as I wasn't getting much success with those either, which was pretty frustrating.

I set up opposite sided players only for corners - where you are on the line and cannot afford to have the ball cross the line for a goal kick.

Since I see so few DFKs scored in FM11 (none for or against me in my entire first season, hardly any on target) I believe you should have same sided players for FKs, as most FKs are indirect and so in these cases you want the ball to end up with as 'flat' as possible a path when entering the box. This maximises the chances of missing the wall and still being just out of reach of the keeper. Also, the squarer your massive man mountain of a unit can plant his forehead on it, the better the power and the accuracy he can achieve.
