  1. Is leadership actually useful during matches? The online manual describes it like this:

"Leadership is the player’s ability to affect events or other players. Players with high Leadership will be influential on the pitch and team-mates will tend to rally around these players."

So how exactly would leadership be beneficial in matches? What does "being influential" and a "rally point" mean exactly?

With Ajax, I'd regularly use a back 3. The squad is so flexible it's easy to interchange.

The 4-4-2 diamond seems vulnerable against the 3-4-3 diamond as you get a numerical advantage in the centre whilst the weakness of the 3-4-3 diamond is defending the flanks whereas the 4-4-2 diamond doesn't attack it.

Against a flat 4-4-2 I'd do a flat 3-4-3 to defend the flanks properly.

    Cheers Ozil

343 diamond as in your Cruyff diamond (3511)?

What are your thoughts on the roles for a flat 343? I was thinking of the following:

    CDx---CDc---CDx

    WMs---CMs---CMs---WMs

    DLFs---AFa---DLFs

That midfield is as neutral as it gets, no PIs whatsoever on any player. Since I'm a pretty terrible tactician I was thinking that it's probably best to just leave it up to the players to make their own decisions.

EDIT: with the usual high block TIs and standard/very fluid.

@max787 I think one has to do with distance whilst the other is accuracy?

The best place to get an understanding of what player attributes do is the Online Manual found at the top of this forum - the tab just below the SI logo.  Hit that, then FM17, scroll down to Players, then scroll down again to the Attributes section.

Here's what it says for goalkeeper kicking:

"The physical capability of a goalkeeper to kick the ball – this purely defines the distance he can reach with a kick from hand or from the ground. His Passing rating will define how accurate his kicks are."

    Thanks Herne and Samuel.

So, if you play with a sweeper keeper who mainly distributes to his back line then is the kicking attribute largely irrelevant since he's mostly playing short passes in order to retain possession?

  4. I'd like to be able to compare any player regardless of position.

At the moment you can only compare players that share a position. For example, you can't compare a striker to a central defender. This is particularly annoying as I regularly retrain players to new positions, especially wingers to full backs. Not being able to compare a winger that I've identified as a potential signing to my current full backs is particularly annoying.

  5. Superb thread Cleon, great work. I've found that this tactic is a good starting point, but PPMs are absolutely vital to making it play out effectively. I've added "gets into opposition area" and "break offside trap" to the Ljungberg role and they've really transformed how it plays, I think I'll add "tries first time shots" next. The Pires role has also seen marked improvements since I added "tries killer balls often," "curls ball," "gets forward whenever possible," and I'll probably add "cuts inside."

I was wondering what you think the ideal PPMs for Henry, Bergkamp, and Vieira, would be? I'm thinking of the following:

    Henry

    Cuts inside from left wing

    Moves into channels

    Places shots

    Knocks ball past opponents

    Come deep for ball

    Looks to break offside trap

    Runs with ball often

    Plays one twos

    Bergkamp

    Comes deep for ball

Looks for pass rather than attempting to score

    Plays short simple passes

    Tries killer balls often

    Vieira

    Runs with ball through centre

    Dives into tackles

    Arrives late in box

    Plays one twos

    Knocks ball past opponents (Maybe)
