  1. What would the main differences be between playing a trequarista and a false 9 in the striker slot?

Closing down is an obvious one.

The trequarista gets set as one of the playmakers, the F9 presumably doesn't. The F9 probably doesn't have as much creative freedom.

What other differences are there between the roles? And how can I expect play to change if I switch to a F9?

    Anyone?

Also, how important is it for inside forwards to be wrong footed? I'm really struggling to find affordable, left footed wide players that I like, so I'm probably going to have to play a right footed player at AMR as an inside forward.

  2. Having one issue. Asked in GQ, but maybe this is a good place too.

My team doesn't gain any familiarity with its tactics whatsoever :( Dunno what to do about it.

Started a new save with Newcastle on 14.1.3.

Created two tactics, set match training to tactics only, match training level to maximum (most left), general focus was fitness at first, now team cohesion.

Played 4 friendlies, but there was no improvement with tactic familiarity whatsoever.

I did after the first two matches exchange all first team and bench players (always create two team which take turns) and thought that might be it (though it shouldn't), after the third friendly I only exchanged 5 players, but no improvement either.

What's up? Am I missing something or is this a bug?

Has it improved at all since you posted?

It took me ages to get full tactical familiarity too.

  4. Has any info on the mechanics behind the new roles been available ?

E.g. the Enganche has , i believe, "run with ball" set to rarely . In-game-help mentions his difference from the Trequartista but not from the Advanced Playmaker. So, what is it?

Finding out about each one's default settings can help understand what differentiates every role from other similar ones, in a more literal manner than the descriptions provided

Enganche presumably has roaming "off" and wide play set to "normal" since he's supposed to stay in the hole, run from deep is probably "rarely" too, TTB "often" is likely, very high creative freedom, may have HUB. No idea on closing down or run with ball.

  5. Anyone know? Is there a table somewhere that says which training category each attribute falls in or something?

Yes, you can view it in the game.

    1. Go to a player's profile

    2. Go to his training tab

    3. in the upper right corner of his attributes panel (on the right of the screen) you will see a drop-down menu with "area" marked on it.

    4. Click it, select which category you want to see.

This will show you the attributes trained by each team category, and also each specific role that the player can train in.

  6. I kinda forgot the answer to this so thought I'd ask here to make sure 100%. What does your base formation shape represent in FM? Attacking with the ball or defending without it?
It more accurate to think of it as your defending shape, as you would in real-life. The players will deviate more from it with the ball than without.

Yep, it's really easy to make a 4-4-2 look like a 4-2-3-1 in attack, but very difficult to make a 4-2-3-1 look like a 4-4-2 in defence (two banks of four).

  7. I kinda forgot the answer to this so thought I'd ask here to make sure 100%. What does your base formation shape represent in FM? Attacking with the ball or defending without it?

I've always believed that it represents the defensive positioning of your team without the ball. I don't have a link to confirm that though.

What are the benefits of runs through center on a IF?

When he cuts inside he will generally attack the centre backs as opposed to going back out wide, it's a PPM that I personally like on IFs

  8. Does pitch size make a noticeable difference to the effectiveness of tactics?

I'm playing a 4-5-1 with a counter strategy, I use the shouts "press higher up" and "hassle opponents" at the beginning of the match. This means that pressing is on full, and the D-line is somewhere in the middle after using the shouts.

I've always used the largest pitch possible, since I wanted space behind the opposition D-line for my forwards to counter-attack into. However, recently I've been thinking that the smallest pitch possible could be beneficial since it will be easier to aggressively press the opposition (less ground to cover), defence will be tighter (less space to mark), and counter-attacks could be faster (as there is less space needed to cover when moving up the pitch).

Thinking (reminiscing :p) about the old Highbury pitch is what brought me to these conclusions, the pitch was notoriously short and was a large factor in our lightning fast, 3 pass counter attacks of old.

Does this logic translate into FM? does pitch size actually make a noticeable difference?

    Thanks for any replies :)

  9. 2 questions :)

Is height taken into account in the match engine? For example, if I have a very tall centre back with a poor jumping attribute can I reasonably expect him to be strong in the air due to his height?

Also, does the "heading" attribute affect the success rate of aerial duels? I'm confused as to whether it's an accuracy stat, similar to finishing, or if it's a stat that directly affects the likelihood of winning the ball in the air, similar to an aerial version of the tackling stat I guess.

    Thanks!

  10. How come some older Key Players are not able to tutor Hot Prospects?

The case concerns Luke Shaw not showing up in Mario Melchiott's tutoring list. Loads of other players do, including other young players in the first team squad. The same goes for James Ward-Prowse not showing up for Jari Litmanen.

The tutor must have a squad status that is greater than or equal to the young player who will be tutored, the tutor must also have a higher reputation. The problem is probably related to reputation.

  11. Or perhaps my other "stupid" questions are, is there a role and duty (or set of individual instructions) that would simply allow players to play differently and up to their strengths, based on their attributes values and PPMs?

Winger support is incredibly generic and is my new favourite AML+AMR role :)

    Mixed forward runs

    Runs with ball often

    Cross ball often

    Through balls often

    Wideplay is set to normal

    Roaming is on

This means that PPMs and attributes will largely dictate how different players play the role. Having run with ball, crossing and try through balls all on often means that they will always look to make something happen, they will be accelerators of your game, but they won't favour one over the other so their choices and style of play will largely depend upon the player used.

For example, your player with the PPMs "cuts inside," "places shots," and "gets into opposition" area will probably play like an inside forward.

Your other player, the one with "hugs line" and "runs with ball often" will play like a traditional winger getting chalk on his boots :)

  12. True, didn't notice. Thanks!

    Another problem I have -

at first I was playing with two IF, but then I read that usually the center gets too crowded that way. So now I play Walcott as IF and Podolski as a winger. The problem is, Podolski can't cross (6 succesful crosses out of 53), and since he's staying close to the line most of the time with this role - he's not very effective. What can I do to make a better use of him?

And if I already mentioned the crosses - nobody in the team has above 25% of succesful crosses.

    Is this normal?

Crosses are generally low percentage balls, they depend upon both the quality of the cross and the aerial dominance of the receiver.

Podolski also has a low crossing attribute (if I remember correctly) so it's not that surprising that he doesn't make very many successful crosses. I would personally swap their roles around, making Walcott the winger and Podolski the inside forward. Walcott can use his pace to beat his man, get to the byline and whip in a cross, whereas using Podolski as an inside forward will allow him to take advantage of his high finishing and long shot attributes :)

  13. Question regarding learning new positions, and losing the newly acquired position.

M'vila is a DMC by default, I use him as a central midfielder so I retrained him to be a CM. He became accomplished in that position after a while. I decided to teach him a PPM, which took up a decent amount of his training, so I stopped teaching him how to be a CM while he was learning the new PPM.

Unfortunately, despite playing as a CM every week, he dropped down to being "competent" in the position. This doesn't really make any sense, but it's something I'll have to remember.

However, my question is the following: If you retrain a player's position, and he becomes "natural" in the new position, can you safely stop training the position without him regressing back to "accomplished" or even "competent?"

Logically, it should be fine, since the player is now a natural in the position, but I have some doubts seeing as M'vila regressed from "Accomplished" to "competent" despite continuing to play as a CM.

    Thanks :)
