I'm managing Bayern in FM21 Touch. I'm really still beginner at tactics so following the advice of Rashidi and trying out some of the presets as well as his Bayern Vertical Tiki Taka tactic that he posted recently. One thing I noticed, the tactics recommended by the Assistant with the thumbs up changes from time to time. I had Wing Play suggested previously but not now, Tiki-Taka and Control Possession are recommended now when they weren't before. Why would this change while I've still got the same players? There's always three suggested options, just not the same three.

Assistant's suggestions are awful and, worse, random. Furthermore, it is entirely possible that after you set up according to his advice, he would give you a contextual advice to change formation to something else.

this is my setup, i got promoted via the playoffs playing a more possession based system, unsure if i have the players to play a defensive/counter system, or if this would even be considered a good system. open to any comments/criticism

    Try this:

Remove wingers. Instead, add another CD and another PF.

Most TI should be possession-based. If you are massive underdog, you probably won't produce many quality fast breaks. Attacks should go via wingbacks, who should run wide and produce throw-ins and, hopefully, corners. Both PF should man-mark opposite wingbacks, it works very well for deep defense. Make both CMs carrileros so they would cover flanks. Put your tallest strongest players at CD, even if they are not defs. Your defensive depth should depend on the way opponent is playing. If he threatens from crosses, defend wider. If he takes long shots, defend narrower. Also increasing pressure helps to eliminate long shots.

Also, training should be entirely about set pieces. A lot of defend free kicks, defend corners, with some attacking corners and attacking free kicks mixed in.

Surey there must be a way to tell my idiot players to pass the ball more direct, but still prioritize there's actually someone to pass the ball to, insted of just hauling the ball away at random as fast as possible? Most likley into a group of oposition players.

From what I've seen, some players just love to hoof. I failed to distill it to particular attributes or PPM. I put a player in some role and he just hoofs almost every time. I put another player there instead, with similar attributes, and he plays short passes.

Can anyone direct me to any good threads on what to do when you're team is MASSIVELY struggling. Got promoted too soon and currently rock bottom and cant buy a win.

This is what worked for me in similar situation. Save before match. Play a match on full highlights. Look what's going wrong tactically. After you played (and lost), load again. Make changes to tactics and lineup. Play this very same game again, again on full match highlights. Load again and make more changes. It took me four tries until I won 3-1 the match, that in previous tries I was loosing hopelessly.

My winning tactics were weird (posting from phone, so can't screenshot it)

    PF-d PF-d

    CAR CAR

    Anchor man

5 defs line WBa CD CD CD WBa

Both PFs are told to man mark opponent's wingbacks.

Short passing, wide, waste time frequently, cautious mentality, ease of tackles (ops free kicks could kill you).

This tactics works in english conferences when your team "faces the impossible"

In FM20 it just didn't seem to work full stop, in fact when I first took the club (barnet) over he did actually try to sign some youth players but it then just completely stopped and never worked even in the prem. Pretty sure we have enough transfer budget to bid on a player.

I am hoping its just something simple like this tbh.

I actually seem to experience the same in my current save. DoF just isn't trying to sign anyone for whatever reason.

So it has been several years coming but the news has finally come.

    resign.png.88daac63a6d8ba62298836b5d684c4d3.png

I just couldn't handle it anymore. Another positive summer strengthening, and another positive  start to the season that faded off uncontrollably. We started the season 7-2-0 and sat comfortably towards the top end of the table. Burrell was still scoring, and I thought that this season was finally going to be our season. A brief period of inconsistency followed whilst we competed in both the FA Cup and the FA Trophy, but then things hit the fan. Eventually after five defeats in six I just could hack it no more and had to leave.

I am unsure as to what to do next. I feel like I have one more attempt left in me at this challenge, but watching everybody else's successes in here make it a tough choice.

Those are symptoms of players becoming unhappy and/or disconnected from the manager. Try these tips:

    1. If someone is not in your first team and is becoming unhappy, release him. Otherwise it would rot your morale.

    2. Set a day, like 1st day of every month, and praise conduct of each of your players. Also praise them if training rating is above 7.30 and criticize if it's below 5.70. Criticize form if last 5 is below 6.50 During the losing streak, discuss their last game. Praise passing if it's above 85%. Praise defensive game if tackling is above 80% and more than 5 tackles made. Criticize for having strikers to feed off the scrap heap. Criticize forwards for leading the line poorly. If a striker is on the draught, tell him you believe in him and he's all but guaranteed to score next game.

    3. On the scouting center, set filters to send free agents offers into your mailbox and default trial to 3 weeks. If a player, who offers his services claims that he would be one of the better players in the team, trial him.

  7. Given the size of the inherited roster, the first thing to do was a major cull. Everyone, who had ability of 2 Stars and below, and had a 0 wage contract was released. Except for the captain. Yeah, previous regime made 1,5 stars guy captain. She didn't feel confident in changing captains until she develops a feel for a team, so she kept him. About 20 players were cut. 18 remained. Somehow this resulted in "park the bus" style no longer suitable and "controlling possession" now suitable. Probably because the team now has no central defenders at all. Ironically, only one player on the squad is worried that the team is "lacking depth", as he politely put it, at center back. Others don't care.

  8. One of the positives of this playstyle is that it explores less traveled avenues within the game world, thus encountering some bugs and reporting it to make the game itself better. For instance, upon examining the work of previous manager, Stupid Blondie learned that AI transfer lists players on 0 wage contracts instead of releasing them outright.

  9. Starting as low, as Cymru south results in decent manager support from the start. Still, there has to be a plan to earn more support from the squad. The most effective way to do it was to promote highly influential players. Every time you increase player's squad status, he supports you more, which is a useful tip when dealing with mutinies. So, she went on to promote two of the three highly influential players. Third one was a star player already and there were no team leaders on the team. This is very realistic, as new bosses often promote key members of the inherited team to buy their loyalty (while having no clue whether they deserved said promotion).

Second step was to talk with veterans about their future non-playing roles. It helps to learn that a player wants to become a scout, for example, and to suggest him to become a scout.

And the third is a ubiquitous praising conduct. The key thing is not to talk with players too frequently. In FM20 one could use Conversation history menu to find out what and when was said to the player so that you won't repeat yourself too much too soon. Apparently it is removed in FM21, so the blondie had to rely on her memory.

  10. Getting the first job is never particularly hard in this game. As soon, as the reporter asked her about struggles of Llantwit Major's head coach, the blondie wasted no time stressing that she would be flattered to work for Llantwit, which is merely 39 minutes train ride from Cardiff. The fans immediately proclaimed her the leading candidate for the job and the next day the poor dude was fired. The news article said, that the firing was in part caused by blondie's interview.

Blondie has discovered, that she is unable to use any gestures in the job interview. She figured that's how SI simulated nerves and jitters of the first job interview. She was so tight, she couldn't even smile. Nonetheless, she did land a job by promising that she would gain players' support.

Once she entered the dressing room, it has become clear why the previous coach had failed. The roster was way too large. Half the players were concerned about playing time and three were expecting to start next game because of such concerns.

She set three tactics that were thumb upped by her assistant upon learning that in FM21 board members no longer have favorite formation. Then she posted an advertisement for general manager. She then took a break to consider next steps. There's no room in the budget, so releasing unhappy players might be problematic. Playing them is not possible either because of the role playing restrictions. The girl has her back against the wall from the get go.

  11. So, a 38 years old lady from Cardiff has decided to try her hand at managing a football club. She is preparing to apply for local amateur clubs.

    The goal:

In ten years become the highest paid manager in the game and have a job in London. All while learning nothing about coaching.

    The plan:

    1. Every move should be made with reputation in mind. Reputation is boosted by badges and titles/promotions. Problem is, teams that are primed for promotion don't usually have a coach vacancy. Unless, of course, the team has relegated and is looking to bounce straight back up. So, she should eye teams that are about to get relegated, yet have potential to bounce back, and try to get a job there. The key is to join them after the season so she won't have relegation on her resume.

    2. For this particular play style it is critical to keep roster small. Assmen are awful at rotating squad, so players who don't crack starting line-up become unhappy fast. Besides reputation, roster's manageability is another core value.

    3. Asking influential players to recommend star players for the team should be a go-to move. It's perfectly within "I have no clue about football" roleplay and it immediately makes her player's favorite staff, improving manageability of the squad.

  12. You are not the only one who starts out with no badge and no past experience. However, what makes you stand out from those FM vets, who begin their journeys from the bottom, is that you genuinely have no clue. You are a blondie with no idea about tactics, training and player evaluations. You are not a football manager, you are just Manager. As such, you do three things that every manager does:

    1. Communicate with higher-ups to keep them happy and get the most out of them. It's ok to throw a fit if they don't fund youth facilities.

    2. Communicate with those below you to keep them happy and get the most out of them. Feel free to put your hands up, you are a blondie after all.

    3. Hire people to care for football part of football manager job.

This is a fairly flexible framework which results in rules that are sorta like the following:

    1. Your formation is either the favorite of the owner, the favorite of Assman or whatever he suggests.

    2. You can't make any tactical changes unless suggested by your staff.

    3. Delegate training or use pre-built schedules and follow the advices if your staff.

    4. Let DoF initiate all the signings. This, however, makes scouting irrelevant. So you can as well task your DoF to sign whoever your scouts recommend at 80% or higher. It's ok to play around it, like you can let your Assman scout a recommended player to make sure that he would love the signing.

    5. Your match line-up is whatever your assistant suggest. Within match you have only do what he says, but you may also ignore his advice.

    6. You transfer list and loan list whoever your staff advise, however you can ask DoF to sell a player if you don't like him or he is unhappy. Similarly, you can only re-sign player if DoF tells you to re-sign him, however you may set a player for release if you don't like him.

    7. All the contract negotiations are to be handled by DoF. However, it is fair game to disapprove signing if it puts you over the budget, as it does not require football knowledge

The basic idea is that you assemble a strong backroom staff and let them win for you, which is actually the way real life management works.

Corners and Crossing are two very different things and there is no need to have good crossing ability with a good corner attribute.  Corners are just that - a dead ball situation from the corner flag.  Crossing is done on the run, sometimes when under pressure from an opponent.  Technique may be useful for both, but for a good corner kick taker all you really need is a good Corners attribute.

Which attribute governs a wide indirect free kick? Guide reads that Free kicks only applies to direct Free kicks.  Wide free kicks are like corners yet Crossing governs them. See, you made what seems like a legit point... And then SI makes crossing govern dead-ball indirect free kicks and this whole point is invalidated. It makes no sense that on-the-run crossing and dead-ball indirect free kicks are governed by Crossing, while dead-ball crosses from corners are governed by Corners.

    Free Kick Taking

This reflects how good at taking free kicks the player is. It solely applies to direct shots at goal; indirect free kicks are governed by other technical attributes like Crossing

At the top of the forum is a link to the Online Manual.  Under the "Players" section of that is a fairly long section called "An Introduction to Attributes" which provides more information about attributes than the in game tool tips do https://community.sigames.com/manual/football-manager-2021/players-r768/

It probably won't answer all of your questions but it should give you more of an understanding of the attributes and how they start to combine with each other.

Is this correct? Does natural fitness affect anything on the pitch? That's what I'm talking about - too many attributes result in confusion and inconsistent interpretation.

    Pace

Pace is a player’s top speed. Whereas Acceleration reflects how quickly a player can attain their top speed, Pace is that top speed and, together with Stamina and Natural Fitness, controls how long they are able to maintain it, both in short bursts and over the course of a match.

    Natural Fitness

A player’s natural fitness influences how well they stay fit when injured or not training. This helps to determine how quickly players recover from injury, how well they retain their physical attributes as they go past their peak, and how fast they recover between matches
