What a month!  Our games against Coventry have always been fruitful and this one was no different as we smashed 3 past them away from home.  We stayed away from Stoke for a while, going to the North East and sticking 5 on lowly Sunderland before returning home and proving entirely ineffectual against Wrexham who taught us a lesson.  Our happy travels returned with a 1-0 win away at Portsmouth before ending the month with a lovely win against Oxford

A bounce back!  Sort of.  A last minute finish from David Hayes bagged us the victory over struggling Aston Villa before the draws started.  We lost the lead twice against Leeds to draw and lost it once against Newcastle in disappointing fashion.  Another disappointing results against league leaders West Ham who were down to ten men for most of the game.  We dispelled doubts by smashing Boro by 4 goals, only to lose to Derby

Shambolic.  Absolutely dreadful.  Rubbish.  A dreadful defeat to promotion rivals Blackburn at home followed by back to back 2-0 defeats in league and cup!  Losing in the 3rd Round to Peterborough is dreadful and to back that up with a 2-0 loss against Reading is even worse!  We regained some pride against Huddersfield only to lose it all again against Palace.  Shocking.

We just keep on rolling!  Another good month as we continue our assault on the top of the table.  A disappointing start as we drew with Wrexham and succumbed to defeat in London but we soon bounced back, going unbeaten for the rest of the month as we easily dispatched Boro, struggled to a draw with Brentford before smashing their neighbours Chartlon.  We finished the month with a simple win in Greater Manchester

Another very solid month.  It was a disappointing to only draw against lowly Wigan with a late equaliser grabbing a point for my former club.  David Hayes put Bristol City to the sword in the second half to secure 3 points only for us to lose our first game of the season away at Derby, with a Martin Hompot screamer not enough to prevent defeat following 's red card.  We returned to winning ways soon after though with consecutive 2-0 wins over Coventry and Sunderland

An action packed month to kick off the season with 8 games in just a month.  We started in the most boring way possible away in Yorkshire as we drew 0-0 at Huddersfield.  We made amends for this start by comfortably beating Reading at home before the reserves overcame Grimsby in the League Cup.  This lead to back to back draws, starting with a late equaliser at relegated Palace before another bore draw with Newcastle.  We squeaked past Villa before another boring draw at Huddersfield saw us out of the League Cup on penalties.  We stayed in Yorkshire and drew again!  Boring!

  10. 2040/41 AROUND THE LEAGUES

Manchester City won the Premier League with Derby County, Crystal Palace and Bristol City being relegated.  Sheffield United, Leicester and Brighton were promoted from the Championship with Ipswich, Fulham and Colchester going down.  Charlton, QPR and Hull won promotion from League One with Doncaster, Chesterfield, Walsall and Crawley suffering relegation.  Forest Green, AFC Wimbledon, Fylde and Burton Albion won promotion from League Two with Ebbsfleet and Chester dropping into non-league.  Warrington and Carlisle won promotion to the Football League with Havant, Bradford, Merthyr and Harrogate dropping into the regional divisions.  Guiseley, Hyde, Newport and Basingstoke won promotion to the National League.  Manchester City won the FA Cup and Tottenham won the League Cup.

In Europe, Real Madrid won their 17th Champions League, Lyon won the Europa League and Wolfsburg won the Europa Conference League.  Hertha won yet another Bundesliga, Real Madrid won La Liga, PSG won Ligue 1 and Celtic won their 66th Scottish title

    Former clubs

    Merthyr Town

Merthyr dropped back into the National League South after 4 seasons in the National League.  A late revival saw them grab 8 points from their last 4 but it wasn't enough as they went down by 5 points.  Some of my boys are still there like Joslin Yousef, Richard Smith, Kevin Mernagh and Gwyn Allen.  The fact that Allen still starts and has over 200 appearances for them probably contributed to their relegation

    Wigan Athletic

Fell of a cliff after I left, eventually finishing 12th

  11. 2040/41 SEASON REVIEW

    1200px-Stoke_City_FC.svg.png

A very good first campaign at Stoke City ended in one of the worst possible ways as a 96th minute Leicester goal saw us drop out of the playoffs in the final seconds of the season

We picked up 54 points from my 28 league games as manager, an average of 1.9 per game.  Had this been the case throughout the entire season, we would have finished on 87 points which would have seen us finish top of the division this season.  Need to repeat or even build on that next season.

    Awards and stats

    Awards.thumb.PNG.2c5e7c99b3827b55959a3c1803bb8fa5.PNG

A fairly tight result for Player of the Season with Patrick Colgan coming out on top with only 35% of the vote, just about beating centre backs Isaac Kabiru and Jason Mullin.  Aidan Buchan deservedly snagged signing of the season due to his strong performances after coming in from Hearts which also bagged him Young Player of the Season

    Stats.thumb.PNG.326ac5fd6c0237f4b98e84415d42e902.PNG

Colgan shows why he won Player of the Season, with him scoring the most (22), having the highest average rating (7.13) and securing the most man of the match awards (4).  Bah, Carabrisella and Buchan were tied for assists with a lowly 7

8 points from 5 isn't bad but it had to be better at this stage of the season, we snuck past Boro but fell to defeat against playoff rivals Birmingham.  We managed to batter Newcastle and came from 3-0 down to get a draw at Brighton before a very disappointing draw against Reading, so where does that leave us?

What a month!  5 wins from 5 as the side properly start to gel with the tactic.  Ipswich put up more resistance than expected but Colgan managed to put the key chances away  before an excellent turnaround just before half-time against Wednesday before another through Warren put the cherry on the cake.   Sunderland were then absolutely battered by a wonderful Bah performance. We then went to my old flame Wigan and played them off the park, bringing Max Dean on late in the game to really rub the salt in the wound.  Lowly Fulham were then dispatched with ease.

Win some things with Stoke. Like the Premier League and Champions League. Because that is never going to happen while I'm alive. :D

    That's the plan!

A decent first month in Staffordshire as we pick up 12 points.  An ok start against Wednesday was followed by back to back away wins as we went to the North East and North West, picking up 6 points from slender 1 goal wins.  We hosted West Ham and youngster Flint grabbed his first goal for the club to grab a 95th minute equaliser.  The reverse happened away at Reading as they equalised in the 93rd minute to deny us victory.  Another disappointing result as we succumbed to a 1-0 defeat against Wrexham before righting it away at Oxford, winning 2-1.

Some big decisions to make this month, as a lucrative job offer came in...

At the end of the month, Wigan are sitting pretty at the top of the league after winning 3 and drawing 1.  Beating Portsmouth, Newcastle and Sheffield United.  Drawing against West Ham.

    Table.thumb.PNG.c616806727716e2415af4ea488cf6624.PNG

I was offered an interview at Stoke.  Went to the interview.  Was offered the job.

On the face of it, its no contest.  Wigan are top of the league and Stoke are 18th.  Wigan all day?  But Stoke offer something extra, actual facilities.

Stoke, apparently, have the best facilities in the world for some reason and are offering quite an easy path.  They just want to avoid relegation and are offering a sizeable budget to achieve this

    Offer.thumb.PNG.064b0643739f3b378bd841c807db21f3.PNG852623510_Offer2.thumb.PNG.09a0410542bc4c0dcc365f3fa3a8bcb6.PNG

Wigan, at the moment, are just a team.  No real backup, no money, no decent facilities and a small stadium.  Stoke have facilities, money and a decent sized stadium.  And they're offering me a pay rise.

Some very solid facilities from their Premier League days with Stoke in the top flight just 3 years ago, and this is reflected in a decent squad

Another pretty good month as we record league and cup wins.  A poor performance on the South coast saw us lose to promotion chasing Brighton.  This defeat seemed to inspire something incredible though as we smashed 7 past Coventry at the DW Stadium.  Strugglers Ipswich nicked a draw away in Suffolk before we hammered Fulham despite having a man sent off in the first half.  We were on the receiving end of a huge scoreline as we were batter 5-2 by Birmingham City before cup progression as we beat Norfolk's premier club 1-0 in the League Cup

Indeed we can!  What a fantastic month as we record a 100% month, winning all 5 games quite easily.  A big 4-1 win at Colchester went with the big 5-1 win at Colchester at the end of last season, does that mean we're worse of they've gotten better?  We then went away to Stoke and needed an own goal to edge past them before eradicating any creeping doubts by hammering Sheffield Wednesday 3-0.  Penalties were needed to edge past Watford in the League Cup and another penalty was needed to beat Blackburn, are we slipping?

  21. AUGUST

    1200px-Wigan_Athletic.svg.png

There's some proper clubs in this division.  Aston Villa, Sunderland, Leeds, Newcastle, West Ham, Leicester, Sheffield United.  Even the "lesser lights" such as Stoke, Fulham, Birmingham, Coventry, Blackburn are scary.  I'm scared.

    Results

    Results.thumb.PNG.293d111de14d1b3300659d8cf8874c33.PNG

No reason to be scared!  Wow, what a start!  To begin our first campaign back at this level in 16 years away at a club like Villa was daunting, but what we did proved we deserve our place at this level.  4-0.  Amazing.  A bit strange to follow that up with 3 league draws, especially against a side like Oxford, but draws against the likes of Sunderland and Middlesbrough are welcome.  We ended our league fixtures against another giant in Leeds and picked up another 3 points!  As this was going on we secured solid progression in the League Cup, easily beating both Chester and Barnsley to reach the 4th Round

    Game of the month

    Aston Villa 0-4 Wigan Athletic

    Villa.thumb.PNG.91d5d8ffb7ac85d63899caac195de447.PNG

I couldn't quite believe what I was seeing.  We went to Aston Villa and didn't just beat them, we destroyed them.  Villa, one of the favourites for promotion were roundly dismantled by a rag tag group of loanees, castoffs and teenagers.  Local hero Dean got the ball rolling before ex Welsh League player Petty bagged our second.  A Luton castoff grabbed our third before loanee Rae got in on the act.  Wonderful.

  23. SEASON REVIEW 2039/40

    1200px-Wigan_Athletic.svg.png

Another remarkable season as we managed to come out on top of a high quality League 1.  There were some bumps along the way and we do owe our title success to Wrexham's mini implosion, but we still garnered 96 points and 100 goals.

Overall, we deserved it.  We had the best attack by some distance, scoring 14 more than our nearest challengers and the 3rd best defence, with only Chesterfield (43) and Wrexham (42) conceding fewer than our 44.  So it all bodes well for the Championship, right?

    Awards and stats

    Awards.thumb.PNG.d0e9c1e342c5be8db07e6c2778c235a6.PNG

Max Dean once again won the Player of the Year, winning by a huge margin once again as he garnered 72% of the vote.  This was somewhat unfair on top scorer Daryl Petty who only managed 11%.  Steven Beale won goal of the season, Mark Newell signing of the season and Max Dean won another award

    Stats.thumb.PNG.e1e2737e881f4eb5e2603257219c4635.PNG

As stated, Daryl Petty was top scorer, banging in 24 goals with Beale in second with 20.  Dean got a fantastic rating of 7.56.  Petty topped the assist chart as well with Boeve being our best passer.  10 man of the match awards for Dean.  He's amazing.  Petty and Dean are our two most important players.
