What's his jumping reach? I'm pretty sure that has more impact within the game.

Sell him, I hate short players (Messi says hi) :D

Seriously though,  short full backs are a problem, a lot of regens are short

I'd guess if his mentals are all solid he could outmaneuver taller players

aw man that sucks i guess it will free up a non eu spot though

Usually between 25-28 players. I like to have three players for every position, but a 33-man squad would be difficult to balance, so I usually have a first XI, a backup XI, then around 4-5 younger players who can play in multiple positions. It's not always possible to have that type of squad but it's what I try to aim for. The important thing is making sure when signing players to give them a realistic squad status. I've fallen into the trap before of promising game time to players just so they will sign and then not play them as much. Rarely ends well...

Wow I'm sweating thinking about 28 players! I don't like having youths hanging around, I like to play them right away... I've personally never fiddled with the squad status haha it hasn't given me any trouble so I never bothered learning about it :P Are your youths OK with being benched? Do their potential/stats drop after years of being benched?

  3. I typically have 22 players, first 11 plus another 11 players who can directly replace and are really good. I play in Italy where matches are super congested, although I also had the same struggles in England where I did the same.

I'm wondering if this is the norm? Feels weird to bench a wonderkid every other game just to get that sweet 95% match condition. And also to completely rotate the entire roster. At the same time, every time I start a game the squad seems ridiculously larger. I started with Palermo and they had like close to 30 players?

I haven't really had complains about playing time, and the odd player that does complain I'll just field for a period until he stops whining.

Well...I'd go do a few things at first

    1) Search and destroy any deadwood. Serie A clubs usually stack a lot of guys that are in the reserves that aren't good enough so I put those guys on the chopping block (which gives me more wages/money to play with)

    2) Take advantage of the free/loan system. You never know what hidden gem is out there on the cheap.

    4) Build a supersystem. @Rashidi expertise could be useful here :D

The deadwood is always fun to get rid of but I often go overboard and let too many people go :P Cheap transfers are always fun but it's really hard early game when regens are not floating around and you don't really want to just Google for an existing wonderkid. I would love to hear about the supersystem though!

SPAL is an interesting club. I had one season with them on FM18 or 19. Got relegated in the first season though.

You need to look at what is at the club. Whether it is loan players or not, and then play to their strengths.

For sure, I took over them while they were in Serie B about 5 years into my save. They actually had a lot of good players somehow, absolutely thrashed the league and finished 1st. But I want to take them on fresh while they are in this limbo. What do you think is SPAL's strength?

  5. SPAL is a club in Serie A and they've been there for three years, toeing the relegation line. This season, half the players on their team are loaned from other Serie A clubs. IRL, they are bottom of the table.

I've tried a couple of times to stabilise the team but I've found it incredibly difficult. You basically need to replace the entire team with a very limited budget, especially since there's little hope of staying up. Even if you keep the players, they'll be gone in time (either returning to their parent club or being too old to play) and you'll be stranded.

I thought this would be an interesting challenge and would like to hear it from the experts as to how you would move things around.

Now, you haven't give any information regarding what level you play at, nor how the goals came to be, but look at the pure stats, I'd say he would be a decent winger. A bit poor crossing, and very poor flair, but he has the pace and a decent dribbling as well as good passing and vision. Also his very high decision making allows him to at least TRY the correct course of action. So outside his poor finishing I'd say he would be a good winger. So if you got either his finishing (if you want him to score), or crossing (if you want him to stay wider), then I'd say he would fit nicely out on the wing. I don't think he'll be a superstar, but in the right tactic I can see him doing a job.

I don't rate him that much as a DM, mostly because of poor work rate and aggression and I've found those attributes hard to improve much other than chance.

I play Bundesliga, and the match he scored the screamer was against Bayern lol.

I think yeah his physical is very darn good, but still, I didn't expect him to score anything at all! Do the finishing and long shots stats not matter?

  7. So I just promoted a U19 defensive midfielder because I saw he could play on the wing and needed someone there, but his performance is absolutely baffling. He's somehow scored three goals in the five games he's played, despite his abyssmal finishing and long shots stats. And you know, because he's meant to be a defensive midfielder.

    Also note his terrible flair.

This mean's already level with another striker I had promoted along with him, who is doing absolutely terrible. Just... how?

His goals aren't even tap-ins. He once scored a 25 yard screamer from outside of the box.

I suspect that you wont be able to quantify the impact of your talk to the player, but it surely cant have any negative effect

The only negative that can happen if you accidentally promise them playing time afterwards. Made that mistake and now he's upset I'm not playing him enough even though I'm playing him the same amount as before.

I've encountered the 'glass ceiling effect' myself in my career thread.

Trying to sign Champions League quality players to take us to the next level is impossible despite taking the SPFL into the top 7 spots in Europe.

I suppose it's realistic but it can prove frustrating and I nearly jacked the save in but I went off and played about with different saves before coming back to the Motherwell save, altering my tactics slightly and then making it to the Europa League final.

I've now sold off my star foreign imports and I'm going back to the drawing board and going to bring through some kids from home while scouting abroad for young players with great potential and having another tilt at Champions League glory in the next 5-10 years but after that I think it will be the death of the save.

I think the joy of the save for these nations is not going one of the big boys like you've mentioned but taking maybe mid level or lower league team up and usurping the big boys in the nation and then becoming established in Europe. For me on FM21 (before world events took effect) my thoughts were to do this type of save but to give it even more longevity I was going to take a third division club up and take them into the European arena.

Hey, I'm curious. Is it possible to just grab a bunch of wonderkids from some cheap nations and try to beat the Champion's League before someone else steals them away? I'm on a Bundesliga save and I realised most of my players are young dudes I stop from poorer nations and by the time their wages and value goes up, I've established myself properly and I could deal with their subsequent contract demands.

Just a stick of measure, I was bottom third in total wages before I won the CL, afterwards I'm 5th from the top.

Wonder if I could adopt this method when I got for a smaller nation.

  10. 7 minutes ago, Scotty Walds said:

No, but you clearly wanted to get rid of the players. Other clubs are allowed to bid whatever they like.

The thing was that they won a trophy by being top of the previous league. You would think people would see that and offer better bids, but I ended up selling my star striker for only less than a hundred grand plus wages. I don't see how that made any sense, especially when another player who barely played and was injured a lot got a huge bid from a big club immediately after I offered him up (while still being injured!). To sum up, they have no idea what players I'm trying to get rid of.

Maybe it's just that I've had the worst luck, but I've given up on the transfer system.

  11. Just now, Scotty Walds said:

But it happens in real life. I remember Leeds were still paying part of their ex-players' contracts after selling them, when they had financial issues under Ridsdale. They were under pressure to bring in money via selling them, so clubs took advantage and made them continue to contribute to their wages.

Well the problem is that I was never under any financial issues in the first place, it was only after about five seasons of terrible deals when I started feeling the effect.

  12. Yeah it's a a really stupid part of the game. I had a save where I was rapidly advancing through the leagues and had a lot of turnover; couldn't sell any of my players even though they were doing extremely well and all the offers I got was sub-100k and I still had to pay their wages in full! Almost bankrupted my club but hung on in the EPL until some of the clauses expired and I could move on.

  13. Not sure if these are exploits but:

I never use the "advertise for staff" function. It's just faster and easier to do a global staff search especially if I want a scout from a specific country. Same thing with players, really, I just go to specific countries like Argentina and manually scout the players, rather than wait for my scouts to find someone good.

When I was poor af I lowballed clubs by telling them I'll give them 50% of the next transfer sale money. I got in a lot of great players sub-20 mil and once I was rich, I didn't mind throwing away half the transfer money selling them.

The last one isn't very reliable, but I had a big U19s squad since I was actively poaching them from other clubs. I noticed I was going up against Barça U19s, and so I decided to sched a friendly against them. For some reason the game automatically lets it happen, so we played them and drew at home 1-1, even injuring one of their players. Then, during the actual match away a few days later, we managed to win 3-0 because (assuming) their players were thinned out.

  14. Yeah scouting is a big garbage. I remember waiting two seasons for them to dig up a defender for me (telling them a number of things like "replacement for X defender" and "defender with high tackling"), but no dice. I just did the cheaty thing going to South America and forcing them to scout all the players with a good rating that season and I immediately found a number of good candidates.

I also realise that you have to manually spam the "keep scouting" button, otherwise you'll just get a highly inaccurate report.

I always try to avoid too many pre season games as I feel it's giving me a higher chance of injury. Last time in fm18 I used to do this all the time playing pre season games against random Belgium Netherlands teams with my affiliates included.

I understand that haha but I send up my U19s and reserve squad to go have fun too... I do need to lessen the amount, maybe once or twice a week is fine though.

  17. I've gotten pretty far in the game and was getting bored, so I cancelled all our pre-season training, took control of friendlies planning, and sent my squad trooping across Europe (and on one occasion, to China). Surprisingly no one was injured and we got full match fitness by the time season started. Here's my fixture list:

Anyone else enjoy friendlies? This late in the game I find it one of the more exciting parts of the game. Love smashing random Icelandic and Kazakhstani teams.

I've not seen anything like that, bar the odd mistake by a player, but that happens in real life so I accept that.

As you've said we can't question your tactics, it must be the game. I'd request a refund if I were you.

How do you blame tactics when they consistently hit corners out or make terrible passes when they clearly have better options?

    13 hours ago, sporadicsmiles said:

If you are not winning friendlies against lower teams with anyone, then it is almost exclusively a tactical issue. Indeed when I am trying out something tactically being unable to win friendlies against weak sides comfortably is an absolute red flag. That is true pretty much no matter who you play as. Just to note as well, tactics are not only about having players in the right place. You also have to consider what you are actually asking them to do in that role. Are they able to do it? Do they have the support around them they require? It is impossible to comment on this here, but this would be my first thing to check. Just saying your tactic is sound does not mean it is.

Other than that, what is tactical familiarity like? If it is super low, this can affect their play. Did you sign a lot of players, which can have a similar effect.

Also, are the players suitable for the roles you have put them in? Not every player can do every thing. If players are making bad mistakes they just might be crap for that particular role. I assume this not to be the case, but I am throwing out as many things as I can think of.

I think those friendlies were lost because the players were making the same mistakes. I don't think it's pinned down to any tactics because I was changing them from friendly to friendly and even as the real matches started. Besides, like I mentioned, some of the stuff isn't really tactical issues, like corners being whipped out or consistently poor passes when there are better options around.

I think role familiarity is interesting because everyone keeps saying the circles don't really matter and from my experience that does seem to be the case, but I don't know if that has a hand here or not. Familiarity is at around 90%, and I hadn't signed a lot of players. Since I played about ten matches and results are consistently the same, I doubt it's a new player thing.

but in real life stadium building takes a long time though look at the chelsea example i have made above. even if SI will put in an expected completion date the date is still subjected to change and the complain will still be the same so i dont know if it makes a difference. if it is just stadium expansion then yeah it is reasonable to let the players know of the completion date in advance.

I just think that a fine compromise would be a more standardised set of events that will either delay or speed-up the process, as well as a consistent variable for when a stadium will complete its build.

  20. This is going to take some explaining so I hope you'll be patient. I recently started an RB Leipzig save because I thought it would be fun to manage a relatively high stature club without much history. Things were fine, the players were decent and I had some nice transfers. We played terrible in friendlies, losing to even Celtic 3-0 of all clubs. But I reasoned that they were just warming up, and anyway I was tweaking the tactics a little. I was letting my ass man handle it but usually I would get draws and narrow wins, but the important thing was up until the season started I never really saw the problem with the team in actual match mode.

In the first Bundesliga game against Union, I was absolutely horrified. The players didn't know what they were doing! Corners instantly float out. Defenders suddenly stumble and don't actually get possession of the ball. Strikers suddenly losing the ball. Headers and passes going straight into opposing players, like they are colourblind. In one goal-scoring moment, and I am sad I didn't get a replay capture this happened:

Winger runs the ball to Union box. Stumbles at the edge and loses the ball. The ball hangs near the line for 2 seconds, and then a defender collects it. Winger jogs back. Wing Back snatches the ball from the defender as he tries to run up the pitch, and then bumps into Winger (like full on "where did you come from!" slam into him). Ball bounces out of possession. Defender gets the ball, crosses it up, striker collects it and scores for Union.

I was bewildered. Another time, my captain Orban makes a simple pass straight to the striker and he lobs the ball in. Goal. Another good one: my defender runs at a striker, bumps into the man, stumbles, and then the striker (completely unfazed) steps forward for a simple pass. Pass connects, kick, goal.

These glaring errors happen again and again and I've never seen such sheer hilarity before, even when I was managing teams like SPAL or Cheltenham or even Portugese League 2 sides. And I will also add that Timo Werner, in my ten game experiment, never scored a single goal outside of a couple of penalties.

Before you start hammering away "TaCtIcS", I sincerely doubt that is the problem. Because, like I said, it's not like we are in the wrong place or we are not getting the ball or anything. These are all simple footballing skills from passing, tackling, and ball retention, not positioning or movement. We get plenty of chances and shots, but one silly mistake and we draw or lose the match.

Have any of you ever witnessed such dumbfounding displays of incompetence?

but if u dont want to commit to a long term save what is the point of building a stadium? the construction of stadium itself is a long term plan. its like wanting your wonderkids to be world class stars at the age of 18 just because u want to only manage a single club for few years.

I actually committed to a 12-year save once, I waited for my board to build a stadium for 5 years. For some reason we made it to the building stage but they reannounced the expansion and it resetted back to the looking for location stage. That was when I just gave up. The game seems too ambiguous and there really doesn't seem to be any motivation to just wait and wait until the game magically decides it's time.

  22. On 30/04/2020 at 18:23, XaW said:

I can understand that, but it's not like you conjure up a brand new stadium in a day or two. I'd think it was pretty bad if the board said "time for a new stadium, it's here and ready to move in tomorrow". So what do you suggest?

A fixed 5-10 year variable completion date, randomly selected. Definitely will help if you get clearer indicators, like progress bars or inbox updates.
