Just a one-off piece of feedback around a response to a harsh team talk (have seen similar issues around volatile reactions in general among team dynamics re squad depth etc). Apologies for the lengthy post!

We were at home in the cup against a side in the division below, I rotated a little bringing in 5 or so good quality squad players (2.5-3 star) to get some game time, thinking the side was still strong enough to get a result.

Concede in first 8 mins, then opposition player sent off after 12 minutes. Changed approach to a very patient possession based system given we were at home to a lower division side who were now a man down but a goal up (so likely to park the bus). Still 0-1 at half time so told the side they should be doing better and got a favourable response.

Replaced the squad players with the first choices with around 30 mins to go but even my now strongest team still couldn't produce much. Eventually got a 90th minute equaliser with a long range effort but went on to lose on penalties.

We had 40% possession (with 11 vs 10!), xG of 1.03 vs their 0.52, only 3 shots on target vs their 2 so it's not like we were FM'ed, it was a poor performance against an inferior side with 10 men.

Now, I can count on one hand the number of times I've 'thrown the water bottle' since this was introduced as an option in FM, but I thought this was as good a time as any for this to be an appropriate full time team talk.

Most players reacted positively but I now have a mini revolt on my hands with 4 players upset. I was called into a meeting as my captain and team leader thought my 'team talks have been confusing and concerning...' - yet with 6 competitive games into this season, this is the first time I've had an unfavourable response to a team talk, so as well as not being sure why my captain is confused, I'm also not sure why team talks (plural) are being referenced.

Could it be a loss on penalties is considered a 'draw' over 90 minutes in terms of the team talk so maybe that's why it was considered more harshly?

I understand it would be a huge coding mission but would be great if some of the promised improvements to interactions (such as "Increased context for reactions will also be provided where suitable, helping to provide additional reasoning and opportunities to convince them to change their opinion if you’re not quite on the same page about a conversation topic" which admittedly is relating to personal player interactions) could be applied to a situation like this. I should be able to justify my team talk by referencing the performance and/or situation in some way - we were at home, heavy favourites, against 10 men for 80 minutes, low possession, not enough shots, etc etc. Instead we have the generic 'back down' / 'dismiss' / 'convince' options which never seem to get the right response anyway.

My managerial support is green albeit 'average' at the moment, I have a strong influence over a number of players and my performance as manager is having a positive effect on the players so it's not like I'm a low reputation new manager who they don't trust and are disenchanted with.

The additional context I referenced above is obviously a tricky one but perhaps the initial reaction to harsh team talks should have some sharper logic taking into account the situation and performance more closely, either resulting in no issue being raised by the player or at least them being more open to 'dismiss' or 'convince' responses to quash the problem.

Hoping interactions and dynamics will continue to be worked on before full release.

Just a quick one on this, I know your feedback focuses mainly on the team talk stuff, but tactically, if a team goes down to 10 men isn't it better to be less patient and move the ball quicker to exploit the space of the extra man? My natural tactic is higher tempo so I never have to change it anyway, but from my experience, much slower possession based football enables the defence the time to set themselves up in a good shape on the edge of their own box to defend. Not saying your tactical decision is wrong and mine is right, I am just more intrigued as I have always played a more higher tempo, direct passing game.

I don't care about new features or anything. The main thing I want from the game is to add variety in how it can be played.

The series has become so stale because there is one way of playing the game successfully & it's attack attack attack with press press press. If you don't enjoy playing like that then it just becomes a frustratingly dull game to play.

It's sad to say this but every addition they have released since 2018, the match engine seems to get worse and worse. You just can't make defensive systems viable consistently, if this is corrected in the new game I will be happy, but I have gone into the game thinking this for a good few years now & it hasn't been corrected. Not to mention the endless  list of bugs. Stop adding so much clutter to the game & fix the stuff that's already in it.

    Rant over!

I don't play like that and I am doing alright. I play a simple 442 wing play with a mid block, classic get it out wide ad get it in the box. I probably could have more success if I used those other tactics, but it is still viable to play a different way in my opinion.

Agreed. Although I think a lot of FM players are simply football players. I have mates who never play games aside from FM.

The Motorsport manager series is good too. F1 manager have a couple out now but it's got 0 management aspects and just looks flashy so it's not a great game beneath the surface.

    Couldn't really get into OOTPB.

Would love an NFL version of it. There was a small team making "beyond the sidelines football" but sadly the lead Dev died.

Draft Day Sports football is decent although not great

  4. I do have to admit, I find the newer versions of FM a lot easier than the older ones. I am a Birmingham City fan and always play my first save with them. For a decade now we have been rubbish and had no money to spend, however, in game I am ALWAYS promoted to the Premier League at the end of the 2nd season in game at worst. Once I am in the PL I never struggle to stay up, literally ever. I want to be relegated sometimes just so I can have that challenge of trying to stop being a yo-yo team, but I always seem to end up comfortable mid table in the first season in the PL and then build from there. I am no expert at this game either, I play a simple 442 wing play system (don't watch the matches as I use commentary only due to time constraints) and year in year out and it always seems to do the trick.

Funnily enough I fired up FM09 quite recently, again playing as Birmingham City. We were in the Championship having just been relegated in real-life and had a really strong squad for the league including the likes of Lee Bowyer, Seb Larsson, Kevin Phillips, James McFadden etc, but I really really struggled on that save, almost getting sacked on a few occasions as I sat in midtable. That version had the sliders, so not sure if that is anything to do with it, but it does certainly feel like it has got easier over the years.

The number of countries and leagues I load can differ because it depends on the computer I have, obviously.

That being said, I ALWAYS load Portugal (what a surprise), Spain, England, Italy and Germany. And usually load Holland, Brazil and Argentina as well. And then a few random ones if I am confident my machine can handle it,

In my most recent FM23 save, I've loaded a lot of nations: Portugal, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, England, Holland, Belgium, Scotland, Norway, Denmark, Ukraine, Serbia, Croatia, Greece, Turkey, Israel, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Mexico and South Korea.

Custom database with about 100,000 something players.

This is the largest FM set-up I've ever done so far.

Speed? Half a star, but it's not slow at all. Maybe it will become slower in later seasons. In that case, I can always remove some countries if it becomes REALLY slow. But if it just becomes a bit slow then I'll bear with it.

As for the leagues I selected as playable, I did not select Vanarama for England and Serie C/3rd tiers for Brazil and Italy. Also only have the first 2 tiers for Denmark and Norway each and don't have the bottom tier for France.

I basically decided to give it a try and see how well my current computer can handle a large game set-up like this. I like to push the computer to the limit always and select as many countries as it can handle. Plus, I like having a lot of options and managers can move all over the world, so this makes the experience more realistic. And I just love a large game world and seeing what happens in lots of different countries leagues.

And with Japan officially coming to FM24, that's gonna be another country I'm interested in loading from now on.

    What about you?

Mine is half a star but also not slow. I don't get far enough into my saves for it to really slow down.

Oh for sure, different strokes for different folks. To be clear, I am not asking for better graphics, I am asking for a better representation of the match engine, so I can react as a manager. A good example is the bad defending that has plagued the series for a while now, its explained that the reason your top class Centerback runs to a ball, stops and looks at it while the opposing ST runs up, takes it and scores, is that there is something happening in the match engine, that the graphics engine cannot show. That is ridiculous to me.

I don't need it to be pretty, just need it to be connected  to the match engine.

Ye absolutely, 100% get what you are saying. I guess that is where I am lucky in the fact that I avoid all of that stuff just doing commentary only! It's a shame though for all those that do want to watch the matches play out, hopefully they get it fixed in the next couple of editions!

I agree that and understand that.

However, I don't think that's causing this issue here. For example, there is a player playing in my division (who would be interested in joining me because his agent said so when I asked), who when I manually scouted him, comes up as 5 star CA and PA. He plays for Liverpool, and is English. Why hasn't he appeared on my ongoing Premier League scouting that asks for 4 star PA minimum? And I bet there are another 30 of these sort of players. This sort of high reputation player in the same division as you, should appear in a recruitment focus that has been going for a couple of seasons, in my opinion.

I feel like this is an issue with the the new recruitment focuses that I am hoping is ironed out this year. I feel like I have seen hundreds of examples of when a player should have appeared in my scouting reports as they have matched all of the criteria, yet they don't. Maybe it is something I am doing wrong, but I have very very basic criteria for my scouts so I haven't been able to spot what I am doing that's wrong (if anything). Hopefully it will either work better this year or i will understand how it works better this year.

Until legitimate match engine improvement happens, I honestly do not care about a single thing here. Got burned by the tire fire that is 23, sticking with 22.

The whole point of the game is matches, if they suck, I really can't be bothered to get excited about being able to slightly alter meeting agendas.

The big question for me is are we still going to fall back on the "well the 3D engine can't show what's really happening in the match engine" excuse? If so, count me out. Remove the 3D if it cannot represent the match engine or redo the match engine in a manner that allows the 3d engine to show it. I still cannot fathom that there was a meeting somewhere that went "hey the graphics engine cannot show anything correctly" "eh, release it anyway"...it amazes me.

Apologies for the ranting, I just love the game and to see it fall so hard so fast is painful.

It's interesting how different people's thought processes work! I am by no means saying that what you said is not true or incorrect, as it is obviously what you deem the most important thing, however for me the whole point of the game is almost everything but the matches (how I view them anyway). The last few years due to time constraints I have played commentary only and I think I have a lot more fun than most people on the forums. I enjoy all the other side of things, tactics, stats, transfers, squad building etc. I try to judge how my tactics are working by the stats I see rather than the on field representation. Obviously everyone is different and someone, like yourself, sees it completely the opposite, which is absolutely fine, I just find it interesting how different people can have completely different views. Maybe it is because I grew up playing manager games with terrible or no match engines/graphics, and to this day I still enjoy a lot of manager games with rubbish or no engines/graphics such as Out of the Park baseball, Draft Day Sports basketball/football and World of Mixed Martial Arts.

Extremely tempted to start my proper save on Beta this year, am a slow player and don't get as much time as I used to

Also am thinking this being described as "the most complete version yet" and a "Love letter to FM" etc, makes me think we might see less bugs than normal

Anyone got any views on this?

I have started my FM save with Birmingham City during the Beta for the past 4 or 5 years. I, like you, only get limited time to play so I only every get about 5-8 season in game completed per year, which I am fine with as I only really like it with real players. Of those 4 or 5 years, there was only 1 year where I had to restart the save due to a bug whereby after gaining promotion to the Premier League, the board wanted me to basically win the league, win all the cups and go unbeaten all season and gave me a budget of about 15mil. Besides that, all other years have been fine to carry on with.

  10. I have noticed this in my Birmingham City save. I am in season 4 and just starting my 2nd in the Premier League after avoiding relegation last season. I have always been strict with wages and the maximum wage a player in my team has is £40k but the rest of my squad are around the £20k to £30k region. Now all of a sudden because I have £25mil left in my transfer budget and a decent amount left in my wage budget I am getting a load of players kicking off saying they deserve a better contract and demanding £70k per week. It is ridiculous.

This gave me an idea while that might placate this dynamic potential crowd. It's somewhat of an in-between for the people who play with attributes completely off and those like me who want the ratings since I can't actually observe the players.

The attributes of the player should reflect what the coaches or scouts currently think rather than hard-coded values. Its almost meaningless when you get a report that says "player x is now a leading premier league player" when their attributes haven't changed at all. They're still the same player and by the time you get that message you know they're in form. The attributes should move with the coach/scout perception of that player. A player might only be a 140 CA/PA player but if they're consistently getting 7.2, 7.5, 8.0 ratings in PL games perhaps the attributes reflect a player at 150 or 160 or even 170! Its up to us then as managers to decide "is this their true ability or just a hot streak?" Likewise if a player starts on a poor run of form and their ratings drop. We'd have to question is this a decline in ability, reversion to actual ability, or just temporary blip in form due to fatigue or mismanagement etc.

I think this would add some dynamic elements to the transfer market for the player as well since its easily an area a human can outperform the AI in.

Buying a hotshot youngster from a lower division? Maybe your scout told you he was a PL caliber player but he turned out to be in the right system at the right time. Now moving to a bigger club where he's no longer the focal point means his skillset isn't being utilized as efficiently so his ratings start decreasing. Do you off load him at a discount and cut your losses or try and help him rediscover his form because you believe he can be better?

I think that would reflect reality a bit better since if someone was lighting the league up for long enough such that the general consensus was "player x was previously only thought to be a decent/good league player and is now a good/leading league player" they would presumably get a CA boost. I could be wrong in how you do your job so please correct me if that's not how it works.

Should add the ME would use their actual CA ability (however it works) so that you can't cheese the game this is purely a skinning/UI exercise.

This is very much like Out of the Park Baseball. You get your own scouts ratings of your players, plus a neutral league rating of the players, but they are just their personal ratings from them, and at the end of the day it is up to you who to pick based on the multitude of stats available in the game. I like this approach as it makes it feel a little more realistic to me.

I've been meaning to post this for a long time but always stopped myself thinking that people will think i'm simply moaning lol. I play LLM, just tried to sign a player who wanted £52k p.a, to be a star player & an host of demands. He refused my offer, then a day later chose a club of lesser level for £12.5k p.a & a regular starter role. This has happened to me dozens of times. I'm guessing a lot more people have experienced this. I really hope this can be looked into as a primary issue. Ps his demands in the contract were far, far less with the club he went to.

Happens all the time and it is incredibly annoying!

Are you not responding to everyone in a meeting with multiple players present? Clicking the promise responses will, if I'm not mistaken, create a promise made to all 4 players present, not just to the 3 ones that disagreed with you. And clicking the right responses will further worsen the morale of the unhappy three which is why I hate these interactions as you cannot address different responses simultaneously.

This is what I always thought it was.
