  1. Oh also Queens park are great, they are stubbornly Amateur as part of their club culture, so any decent player they find make an offer and poach them. One trick I found accidentally was clubs would make ****** lowball offers for my players, and they'd start moaning I didn't sell them to Aberdeen for £1 or something. So I tried it with some of my rivals, or just looked for unhappy players. I kept bidding £1k for a Hibs midfielder worth 100k, like constantly, every week, or declaring interest then spectating their games. Eventually they gave in and sold me to him. Wasn't too bad either, even though I didn't really need him I was basically just trolling. Just make sure you can afford their wages and bonuses first though.

  2. My first 'proper' save was recently, with Airdrie in FM17. it was a massive jump from L1 to Championship, which I didn't expect. It probably needs a complete squad overhaul, more defensive tactic, and basically trying to grind for draws and scrape a lucky win here and there to survive the first season, and build from there to mid table, then top of the table or promotion. I think the equivalent in England is maybe going from the Vanarama to division 2, where clubs go from semi pro to pro (I'm not sure about this cuz I don't follow English football much). I'm ashamed to say I save-scummed myself from a relegation battle, but my first season I really regarded as just learning the basics anyway as opposed to a hardcore playthrough, going for the Champions league. Anyway the point is I'm nobody to be giving any kind of FM advice, but from my mistakes I think I'll try the save again but if I get promoted I'll play as defensively as possible, bring in the best possible defense and ideally one or two fast paced AMs or Poachers that can counterattack. Do your best to get a parent club, even if you are playing to get promoted and it only lasts a season. I ended up with a guy called Tim Chow from Ross County who was amazing. Not really a spoiler because this was FM17 and I don't think he'll still be around.  Some might view this as cheating, but it could be interesting if you had the in game editor that one of you sets up your club as an affiliate of rangers and the other as celtic, or an english prem team, it would mean you got to develop some good players on loan.  I like to do some background experiments in saves, in my Ghana AFCON save where I just failed to qualify for the World cup I have a lot of African league databases loaded, so I set Hearts to be affiliated to a few African clubs with 'heart' in their names. It doesn't really affect my save but it's interesting to check on from time to time.

  3. Please note, I haven't completed this myself, it's in progress, so it may not be feasible (please discuss)

The idea is you take charge of a big club, and you do your best to screw them up. It's up to you how you do it, you could do it gradually over a few seasons, get them relegated, put them in financial trouble, cut back their facilities etc. Or just go all out sell off all their best players at a loss, bring in some donkeys for massive wages and appearance bonuses etc. Anyway eventually you will get sacked. At this point you are not allowed to apply for jobs, you have to be headhunted. That's where it will help to have played it subtly, gradually undermining the team over a few seasons rather than just nuking them in a week. It will of course help a lot to be playing in at least four levels, or even with a non league database. When you get a job your challenge is now to get promoted above or level to your previous team.

    Bonus points for the following:

Bring in a good player from the former club to your new club
Beat your previous club on at least 2 occasions
Win a bidding war over a player with your former club
Increase the level of club rivalry (requires in-game editor to view this stat)
Get your new clubs average attendances above the first club
Get at least 5 of your first clubs players to dislike you

    All other suggestions welcome!

It's not required, but it could also be interesting to try to use two clubs that are closely located. Eg you could start at Man Utd, and end up in Salford City. You might have to go through a few lower league jobs to get there. That will make them more likely to be rivals, and could even end up being a derby game for both teams.

  4. How much has changed from the old Championship Manager games to the latest FM? Is there any possibility that one day the old games (at least the first one) may be made open source? As a (very) amateur coder I'd be really interested to see behind the scenes, and even tinker with the game in ways that you can't do with modding. Of course dependent on how much of that code remains in the newest games it may not be possible. Thanks for reading.

  5. This would be quite a niche thing, but I have an idea I'd be interested to see. I find it hard to explain it well, so bear with me and I can try to clarify if you have any questions.

The original concept was to create a neutral football game engine, then for example EA, Konami and others could create their own AI engines to play the game head to head (and at the time resolve disputes over which was better between FIFA and PES). Note that no human is playing, an individual or team would create an AI that then plays the game, responding to match events. Anyway this idea could be useful for FM. It's a geeky concept that probably only I would find interesting, but I think it might still work as a way for small indie devs or amateur coders to create their own AI's to compete with each other. The advantage to SI is they could possibly then incorporate some functions to improve the FM match engine etc. I guess all this could theoretically be done already with scripting to press buttons as applicable, but having a sort of API to work with would make it much smoother. And having it formalized, with an agreement that SI gets licensing rights to the codes and broadcasts etc, makes it more advantageous to SI.

These ideas are similar to the ones I'm exploring at the moment. Ive added the top 10 clubs from Scotland and NI into the English league system (although they still play in the Scottish cup) and created a new nationwide league cup to replace the Carabao Cup. This cup throws up some really interesting match-ups, in theory increasing exposure and income for smaller teams in Wales, Scotland, NI and Ireland (who are included for the purposes of this).

Ive got a save of this simulated 30 years into the future.

Unfortunately, it isnt as exciting as you might think. With the largest 9 clubs removed, the Scottish Prem gets quite interesting with Livingston, Ross County, St Mirren and Raith usually competing for the title. However, they gradually lose more of their European coefficient and the league reputation decreases. The 'Union Cup' doesn't increase the reputation of the home nation leagues much, if at all. I tend to find that clubs aren't very good at spending their money in FM.

This save also has a lot of other things going on, and some teams were messed around with- for example financial sanctions were placed on the Big 6 to try and reduce their dominance but it hasn't really worked. Except Chelsea. Chelsea got relegated, which was fun.

I have attached the save below if youre interested. I did go further than 2040 but can't find the save game, maybe I deleted it.

    https://www.mediafire.com/file/2tqvxb7egvhby9c/UNION_V1.0_2040.fm/file

Looking to develop this idea further in future, with an expanded Irish domestic league system and a Dublin-based team in the PL.

Is this for FM20? Sounds really interesting, I'll take a look. :)

    Why not England?

It would probably make more sense, but I think England is always overrated in FM, I'd like to see a more organic growth in reputation etc.

Also, if you saw the maps I make and some of the files, Iron Curtain is small compared to that.

Plz share! I was actually thinking of creating a dedicated alternate history sports site or forum of some kind if there was sufficient interest. The alternate history wikia is also really good though.

and alternative history is such a fun thing :)

FM is great for alternate history, especially with a retro database or older versions of FM. Another experiment I'd like to try is a United Kingdom team. What would be the best way to achieve this? My strategy would be to change say Scotland to Britain (nationality Scottish > British), and change all the English, Welsh and Northern Irish players to Scottish/ British.

  9. This is part of an alternate history timeline I am working on, where there is a UK national football team replacing England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. Although the leagues remain as is, there is a UK-wide Cup starting in 1991 (using a retro database from that year). From 99 onward I'm going to use the FM retro database, as the other one is too heavily weighted towards Leeds Utd.

No, it was a try out file I made to see what the effects were of 'moving back' players of certain heritage. I want to improve the African teams by making sure not every player is poached by a former colonizer. The DR Congo becomes quite the powerhouse btw.

Algeria is another one that comes to mind, they could have some amazing players who ended up choosing to play for France. I recall a while ago there was some media speculation about the Netherlands, it could have just been nonsense dreamed up by tabloids but they suggested there was a racial division in the Netherlands team. There was talk of some players switching to play for Suriname, and at the time they could have had some very good players.

With regards to that last, I can answer that one for you :D

What I did was look through all Dutch players and moved them around based on heritage. So Virgil van Dijk was made Suriname-Dutch instead of Dutch.

Suriname suddenly shot up the ranks and after a 30 year holiday was able to constantly qualify for the World Cup.

So a general rule to spice up your country would be to have a set of good players that can improve your international results. That will increase reputation and probably some behind the door stats that we can't edit.

Oh that's really interesting, thank you! Holland has some amazing players of Surinamese descent, that would be really interesting to see. Did you happen to save that on the Steam Workshop or anything?

When I tried this with China my results weren't great, they pretty much went back to the same level they'd been previously. In their golden generation they got to the World Cup semi final, then once those players retired they were back to struggling to qualify. Maybe it was something I did wrong though. I'll try this again but with some different nations.

  12. I like doing some background experiments that won't affect my save, but give me something interesting to check up on at times. I decided to add in Donald Trump and George Soros as ambitious owners/ chairmen who hate each other. I didn't want them to replace any real owners, not have them tied to any club at the start and hopefully try to buy a club. Is there any way to do this? I thought I'd set them up correctly but searching their names once in game they don't show up. Also I can't see a way to set them up as owner, only chairman. Would I need to edit an existing owner, and remove them from their current team?

  13. Other possibilities (but I haven't checked them)
Palestino in Chile, may produce Palestinian nationality players as the club is associated with Chilean Palestinians
Cyprus - some clubs are associated with Greek players, and others with Turkish
LAFC and Inter Miami - it may be that these teams and other MLS teams produce a high number of latino second nationalities due to the demographics

I think there should be an added category to the left hand side menu: Media.

Instead of just having all media interaction through your inbox, this category will keep track of press conferences, relationships with journalists, reactions to media and the social media.

I like this. If I may expand on it, it also plays into the social interactions direction FM is going in. You could have some limited ability to start rumors, interact with social media (maybe a like and dislike button on social media posts which affects relationships), give anonymous tips or arrange press conferences or media interviews yourself, etc. I personally find that side of the game pretty dull, but it would be a nice novelty to be able to play mind games. Find a less reputable tabloid and give them an anonymous tip that the star player of your rival team is unhappy and wants to leave, causing some tension in their team. Tell a manager or player on social media they are inept, and cause a personal or team rivalry to emerge.

t's not something the manager would get involved - editing database , changing leagues rules  etcc... with the editor . in 2013 FIFA manager managed to have one why not football manager

Ultimate Soccer manager did this really well also, that was back around 2001 or so I think. Even if the manager is not involved it would be really nice to have a visual of the stadium in the facilities part. not just for your stadium but for the youth facilities etc too.

Big issue for me in the recent versions of Football Manager is the way the crowd looks and behaves, I used to love the crowd in FM12-14 where the crowd was way realistic than it is now, when you are playing in a club that has a decent sized stadium  but doesn't have much fans the crowd looks terrible, they are scattered on the whole stadium rather than being in a huge group on one stand or two stands, they also get excited even if there is nothing happening while in previous versions from FM14 downwards they were all seated and just excited when there was a goal or a shot or a foul, I even remember there was some flares lighted up in the game which was so cool to see, I know it's a small detail but details like that made me love it even more, wish that in the next versions it could be improved.

They are socially distancing! :p But in all seriousness, I agree. I notice that when playing against Queens park, which is a small club which uses a massive stadium. The way they spread out is not realistic. The game even references closing stands due to small attendances so i think it should be considered. As for flares make sure you are playing in a league like in Greece, Italy or Argentina where you are more likely to see them. Maybe when you schedule friendlies try to have a nigh time match and you will see them.

Just holidayed one season with Caley Braves (database from Timo) :

In my ten seasons with them on FM20 , they only had french regens (one or two from marroco) and some second African nationalities .

Now i see a good mix from Scottish and French regens:

That seems to be the case in real life too, I suspect they have squad rules for foreign players in the league.

  18. I think given the current expansion of the MLS, for the next edition at least, there should be some way for the MLS to add teams. I would suggest picking out 2 random successful clubs from the USL championship and franchising them into the MLS around 2025 or 26, when the currently arranged teams have already joined. This has its limits of course (I'd suggest 32 max unless the league looks certain to keep growing) but it's just seems strange to have a rapidly expanding MLS then nothing for the next 10-50 years, depending on how long your save goes. Thoughts on this are appreciated, some may disagree understandably. And obviously it's not a huge priority, but would be an interesting addition imo.

They are hardcoded in the database to get dual nationality newgens, though you can emulate that with a city that has a foreign "local region" set in the pre-game FM Editor

So say for example I wanted to get some Russian newgens at Chelsea occasionally, I would create a new city, put its local region as a Russian region like Siberia or something, and its nation as England? EDIT: and of course set Chelseas location to this new cty

seems very nice , i'll check this.

Doubting between Caley Braves , Berwick, maybe something like Gretna or starting in Andorra lowest tier.

On that theme, check Zealands channel, he's doing a save with Oriental Dragons, which is a Chinese-owned team in the lower leagues of Portugal. They have a club vision which includes bringing in Chinese players. I'm not sure, but In suspect they will generate Chinese or 2nd nationality Chinese newgens as well.

Maybe u heard about Edusports ? that was the former club / name before fans voted for 'Caley Braves' .

I'd never heard of them, but that's really interesting! Maybe one day FM will take these types of training camps into account somehow. Eg if you manage Argentina, and you set up your youth training academy in Uruguay, it has some effect on that region or nation.
