I think it depends on a lot of things and how you approach the game on various aspects. If I would counter attack a superior side I would probably use attack mentality, a very structured fluidity, deep lines, and high tempo. You want to break with very fast transitions, you dont want to be any less than fast. The lines are what will dictate more how you play.

And I don't agree at all on having to play with extreme positive mentalities with high tempos against cautious sides, this is football, this is not black and white like maths.

The more I play this game I believe it is all about the maths though..... take a perfect well balanced tactic truish to real life and it can fail..... take a totally unbalanced tactic contradictory to real life tactics and people find success.

I play to the former, think that’s where I’m going wrong...

Same here ... have fluidity after a few games except for player roles which is always low. I train it often by match prep but it won’t increase

    So frustrates me when

    A. The player has attributes to play the role.

    B. When according to the same guy it’s his most suited role but after 40 games he needs more game Time to become accustomed to the role.

with information like this I fully understand how newbies get confused with this game.

Hello anyone that might read this, hope you are all doing well.

Basically what this post is asking how I would go about creating a tactic for myself and just not nabbing one of a forum or other fm website or something like that. I just don't really know where to start with it and was just wondering if anyone had any pointers on how I could get started. I kinda want to actually feel like its me playing this game and some random anonymous person from the internet who's tactic I have stolen so yeah.

I have saw some people saying leaving the instructions pretty bare could be a good idea so should I try that. Would that work with good players (my Everton save) and on my lesser save (Sunderland)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

A lot of the advice you get here will say you need to think of a style you like and go about replicating it, to me that can be difficult to a newcomer and is trying to run before you can walk.

Have a look at the excellent pairs and combinations thread, it goes about showing how to set up a balanced tactic, if you can get a balanced tactic working you can then add various instructions to define a style of play but to begin with I would just go down the balanced route that suits the players you have.

  4. 100% this, a sensible way of going about it for players of all levels whether new or experienced.

As I mentioned in another post most of the advice to people here is to think of a style and then go about making it work in FM terms, to me this makes the game complicated.

You don't need to have a particular style in mind just a well balanced tactic that suits your players.

    Effectively stopping Overlaps?

I play with 433 and have a world class team.I feel one of the best way top teams and even some midtable team keep creating chances against me is with overlaps.I have very good defenders and in most matches it's not a problem. However in some away matches when AI is playing aggrresively with fullbacks overlapping I find them difficult to stop.I tried some strategies like:

1)In most of my matches I set OI for the two wingers(433 or 4231 causes most problems against me btw) to tackle harder and show outside. The thinking is to not let them cut inside.I do not set pressing intensity to Always as I feel my defenders7 get too occupied with the wingers and opposition fullbacks can easily overlap. And for the fullbacks I set pressing intensity always and tackle harder. It apparently worked in many matches, but against some very best teams I couldn't stop the overlap.

2)The 2nd strategy was bit desperate..I told each of my 4 wide players to specifically man mark their respective opponents and told to hard tackle the 4 in the OI....it seemed my wide players were shadowing their wide players and overlaps were somehow mitigated..but my overall defensive structure felt too chaotic.I only tried in my last season in UCL so not many sample for me to understand ita effectiveness.

So,is there a foolproof and/or Jack of all trades strategy that would allow me to effectively stop opposition overlaps?Or is it not possible in every matches?

Having this conundrum myself at the Minute, I've been instructing my wingers to man  mark the full backs which has worked to stop the full backs getting un-challenged crosses in but at the same time I've lost my attacking edge.

My thought now is to let the full backs go and exploit the space they leave instead.

your CM/A is attacking the same area as your IF/A. try switching him to a mezzela on support. your DLF on S might be dropping too deep. and LB on attacking duty to overlap your IW.

A CM on attack will not necessarily attack the same spot as a inside forward on attack, that would be an attacking Mezz who attacks the channels.

Nothing wrong with that combination in my opinion, in that formation you do need attacking penetration from the midfield.

is there any reason why players in the AML and AMR slot don't track back when full backs overlap? I've tried a lot of things, including tighter marking and specific man marking, but I can't get them to defend properly..

Can depend a lot on attributes, my wingers have high work rate and always seem to track back even when on an attack duty, sometimes mark player or specific position helps but in most cases I don’t need to use it.

Yeah, they're doing well.  7.0 and 6.8 for my 2nd choice pairing.   Thanks!

Keep doing what your doing then mate, it’s impossible for the game to know what we want to achieve tactical wise so sometimes something that doesn’t seem logical to the game works perfectly well for us and and works how we want it to.

a lot of the advice the game gives us is just a guide and a not select this option and you will win kind of thing.
