Alex Jones at Merthyr - Season 3
Preseason really goes by quick when you can't sign anyone!
First off with the bad news - our best AMC was sold - I didn't accept the offer but the boss decided that £300k was too good to turn down. There is a 20% sell on clause but I doubt we will get anything from that for a good few years. One good thing was that he stayed in Wales and joins Cardiff.
Whilst looking through the leagues I noticed something interesting in the prem. Money troubles for Utd it seems!
our season started really well, a few wins took us up to 3rd but then we slowly descended down the table. Youth academy preview looked decent, well sort of....It says excellent but then nothing is better than a C!
The team continued to do well in our first season here, sticking just outside the playoffs for the moment. whilst waiting for the Youth players to arrive in March I thought I would see if Man U's money troubles had effected their season at all...
Yes... yes it has! Checking through the transfers it looks like they sold over £150m of players this year, without buying anyone.
Youth Intake
Great again! It is a bit strange that since it knows I am doing a YA challenge I seemed to be blessed with really good intakes. I assume this will change as we progress up the league but for now it is pretty awesome.
Top 3 below:
we finished the season strong but other teams were just better, so we finished one place outside the playoffs. Very happy with this. I am sticking with the attacking formation, as I never find sitting back and playing defensively works at all.
We also made it to the FA Trophy Final v AFC Fylde.
Penalty loss was a bit tough to take after coming back from 3-1 down, but they were the much better side on the night.
Welsh club Updates:
Newport County still sit in League two, they don't seem to be making any progress, Wrexham on the other hand have managed to get back to back promotions and will now play in the Championship.
Cardiff and Swansea both finished mid table so there will be three Welsh Clubs in the Championship next year.
In Wales, Briton Ferry win the league on goal difference, Bala (who won it last year) miss out and there were only 2 goals in it. TNS...got relegated! Which is awesome!
Man U Update....
Well well well....Having pulled themselves out of the bottom three, Arsenal relegate them on the final day of he season. Ipswich scored a last minute winner to leap frog Utd and survive for another year. also, Man U won the Conference league, so European football n the Championship next year!

Great story so far, love the change of developing a few leagues by the end, the Irish leagues will be a challenge when (if) you get there.

Alex Jones at Merthyr - Season 2.
The second season started well and were unbeaten in the first 16 games (league and cup combined). Our form continued through into the new year but February seemed to be the month the players struggled. A winless Feb left us 1 point out of the playoffs.
Youth Intake
We were promised another Excellent youth intake but the only position they rated an A was for striker. This was needed as it was our weakest position for sure. When they arrived on the bus we did indeed get our striker, plus another keeper and Centre back.
Top 3 Below
After the reinforcements arrived it gave us the needed boost to kick on and make the play offs. Another strong end to the season helped us reach 4th place. We drew on the last day of the season which dropped us from 3rd to 4th. 3rd was the target as it would let us skip one round of the playoffs.
Playoffs
This year we got one round further and made it to the final, our reward was facing Gateshead who finished in second place, and they were favourites!
Team News
The Final
The game started very slowly, I had to make sure I had highlights on when we got to half time with no highlight at all! The second half picked up but still 0-0 at full time.
By the 110th minute I was preparing for penalties, players were tired so I took our left back off for our back up striker! However, we didn't need penalties, two goals late on were enough for promotion.
Promotion!!!!!
When we got to playoffs for the second year running I was worried we would be stuck here forever but it went well in the end. I was poised ready to take a screenshot of the trophy lift, didn't realise there wasn't one for the playoffs here! never mind!
Next year is going to be incredibly tough as a lot of players are refusing to sign new contracts, one of our DM's was ready to negotiate, but wasn't willing to accept less than £6k per week....nope!
Season Stats and Awards
Welsh Club Updates:
Newport finish mid table league two, while Wrexham win that league. Cardiff win the playoffs to get back into the Championship.
In Wales Bala Town become the new champions, beating Haverfordwest by 1 point.

Alex Jones at Merthyr - Season 1.
The season started with a bang. Undefeated in the first 4 games and we went 7 games with only one loss. Then September hit and the form plummeted!
By December we had picked up form again and found ourselves in 3rd place, but with 7 teams below us all within 2 points.
The youth academy preview gave us hope...
And boy did it deliver!
Top 3 players below!
Injuries and fatigue hit our players in the new year. We really struggled for form and slipped down the table, part of the reason was that I forgot to move the new youth players into the first team and just "forgot" to use them! Once I had sorted out that little error we went on a 7 game winning streak to end the season in 6th and making the playoffs.
Unfortunately the fairy-tale ending wasn't here today, as we lost in the semi final to eventual winners Scarborough.
Luckily the board objective was to attempt to avoid relegation! However in the season review I got a C- rating for only reaching the play of Semi Final - even with the objective above clearly saying we would struggle in the league...I think the board are getting ahead of themselves.
Season stats and awards below:
Welsh Club updates:
In England, Cardiff finish bottom of the championship whilst Swansea narrowly avoided the playoffs.
Newport county just survived the drop into non league football while Wrexham lose out in the play off final.
In Wales TNS don't win the league! (which is a good reason to celebrate), but they had a very unlikely winner. Briton Ferry Llansawel won the Cymru south last year and then went on and won the Cymru Premier the next season. Remarkable!

After many, many (14 in total!) reloads to get the team I wanted.... Alex Jones has been hired by Merthyr Town FC.
Little is known about Alex Jones's football style, but there have been strange reports of him being "scared" to make any signings, preferring to work with the players already at the club or from the youth academies. The board have not commented on these rumours but appear to be happy with their new manager, mainly because he is cheap!
I have been debating for a while now what my next save should be. Either a Youth Academy save or a Build a nation. So I have decided to do a bit of both combined. I was inspired by another member who also is using Merthyr, and figured I can also take on the task of bringing a world cup to Wales whilst getting Merthyr to the top. I am hoping I can also increase the league reputation back in Wales too by loaning them players (if I can figure out a way to target just those clubs!) Or once we have overtaken them we can loan them to other Welsh teams who play in England.
Also, Alex Jones is wearing a lovely Green suit and red time to show his patriotism.
The club did have a transfer lined up when I joined....I replied in the only way appropriate to the media.
Some good news - Our best player looks pretty decent, however we only have 14 in total!
Welsh Club Updates:
Unfortunately, TNS won the Cymru premier, and all the Welsh Clubs in England stayed in their divisions for another year.

@XaW @darren1983 I started up a new YC save last night, this was originally going to be the introduction post, but I noticed something strange and I want clarification if possible.
I disabled the in-game editor on the setup of the save, but here it's showing it's both used and disabled. Unless there's another setting to enable and disable the editor is this just a weird bug and I'm fine here? I'm not that far into the save but the team is clicking and I don't want to start over if possible.
Not sure if someone has already answered this, but it is a glitch when you have purchased the In-Game editor but then have it turned off for a new save. As it says "In-game editor allowed - No". It can't be used.
I had the same issue when I tried (and failed) the San Marino Challenge

Thanks for the kind words and spending time reading the thread, means a lot to know you're enjoying. The other Welsh teams are really annoying me now, I keep throwing money at them but they do nothing with it, plus, like you, they are all letting me down in Europe!
I even adjusted the TV money so that they were all rich, but they still didn't use the money well. It is definitely a long term challenge! I hope you succeed,

Well done on this, looks like it has been a success so far, I have just read through the entire thread today.
I did the same with Wales in FM 23 (The mighty Conwy Borough) and had great fun with it but ended it before I had reached our end goal as the other teams in Wales always let me down in Europe!
Hope you have better luck!

Victor San Marino/San Marino National Team Season 2 Review
Competitions
We managed to clinch promotion to Seria B after a 1-0 win vs Pescara.
We were definitely underdogs in the play offs after our 9th position finish but we managed to do it.
Players
Angelo Scuteri was our main man up front with 12 goals for the season. A few goals better he done last season.
Alessio Lella was our best overall player with the best average rating and 7 goals as well.

Have you got a really good tactic maybe? I mean this in the nicest way but you over achieved with some of those players you had to win champions league! Well done though, love reading all your updates!

Hi all,
I have never used a custom built database before and looking for a complete idiots guide on how to get this set-up. I am planning on going the Sammarinese team that plays in the 5th tier of Italian football and rise through the leagues while also managing the San Marino national team. Could someone please be kind enough to detail a step by step guide on how to do this?
I have followed the links for the San Marino database and the Italy D5 database and hit subscribe to both, but can't seem to select any different database's in the top right on FM23.
Looking forward to getting this save started, currently have a Cueta one on the go trying to get an team on mainland Africa to win the Champs League.
Thanks.
Once you have clicked subscribe to the database edits, you will need to close FM (if you have it open) and re-open it.
Click on start new career mode and in the top right under "database" click on the box and there will be some tick boxes and you just tick the ones you want to use.

26/27 Season
This was our first season in Serie A and we were predicted to finish dead last at the start of the season. I had a choice to either sit back and defend or stick my the attacking football we have been used to, I chose the latter and....it paid of.
15th was much higher than we could have hoped for, and finally the finance are looking much healthier!
Transfers
This year we were given some money to spend but I stuck with the guys who brought me up. When w got to January, things weren't looking so good so I broke our transfer record and spent the entire budget on a young Left Back
We spent £5.75m (his release clause) to bring this guy BACK to Victor San Marino. Yes, back!
We sold this guy to Empoli at the beginning of the last season for £1.3m, but we also put in a 50% profit sell on clause on there too, so when we bought him we got a nice £2.2m in cash back! He is easily our best player and very worth it as his performances helped p survive.
National Team
We have risen up to 207th in the rankings, slow but steady!
I have started to sign every San Marino youth player who arrives on youth intake day even if they look terrible. I can then send these out for loans etc or try to give them away for free to the San Marino teams!

Formation
forgot to share this....but I have gone for a different tactic for this, it seems to be doing well!

4 Season update
I am finally doing my first proper update for this save. I haven't done anything earlier as I was making sure I would stick to it (This FM has been difficult to get invested into a save).
I have been focusing on the team first before trying to bring the National team up. We have been incredibly lucky and after 4 seasons find ourselves in Serie A (Just!). We struggled in the first season but back to back promotions got us up to Serie B. We finished 5th but managed to draw the play off final but get promoted because we were the higher seed??? Didn't know this was a thing but very glad!
The 25/26 Season was very difficult. A lot of out young players were getting a lot of attention and as we were struggling financially the board were accepting offers left, right and centre. We sold 5 of our starting line up for a combined total of £6m, but on a few of them I managed to get 50% profit sell on fee. All 5 players jumped up in value once they moved to the higher clubs so hopefully we can make some more money off them later! All 5 of them stayed with us on loan until the end of the season to see us promoted.
Serie A
This new season will be much tougher, our best players have gone and the media are confident of us returning to Serie B.
None of the 5 players to leave want to come back on loan so we have tried to replace but we have only been able to replace them with players good enough for Serie B or C. This will be a long season!
National Team
The only success here has been a win against Cyprus in a friendly, but it is a start!

Really nice to see a lot of people play in the Sanmarinese League. In FM 22 I started a save with Folgore Falciano and I managed to get into the year 2059. This has become easily the best and most fun game I have ever had!!!
Here are some screens:
Folgore
This is my club Folgore now in 2059. I am one of the top clubs in Europe even tho I only have managed to get the Champions League once. For 5 straight seasons I've become the group winner in the Champions League so the potential to win another one is there. Unfortunately I'm a bit unlucky with the draws and some results. But there wil come another Champions League, I'm sure of that
Other San Marinese clubs
Here is the top 5 of my League now. The top 5 are Folgore, Fiorentino, Domagnano, Tre Fiori and La Fiorita
San Marino League
I Play in FM 22 so with the old system, the one where you can become the nummer one but don't win the League. This has happened to me twice. Maybe annoying but it is also what keeps the domestic League interesting
Champions League
As I said, I won the Champions League once
I won't be buying FM 23 for a while but instead I'll go further with this save and see how far I can come with San Marino as a whole
National team
Till 2038 I played with the National team but I didn't get good regens for too long, so I quit the national team
Dynamic youth rating
There was a lot of complaining about the Dynamic youth rating. But in my save it actually DOES work. The youth rating is at 45 now and slowly rising
Any questions of screen requests? Hit me up
This is awesome. I look forward to more of your updates!

Hi Everyone! I was tempted to start a similar challenge for Wales (but this seemed much more fun). I took over Victor San Marino (edited to Serie D) and I am loving it so far. I have also downloaded the San Marino league and running that too to try and boost the number of San Marino players being produced.
I simmed the first season to make sure there was no issues with the database, then took over at the beginning of the 23/24.
I checked to see how the national team was doing and to see if I can take over them too but it looks like they have already managed a win! Euro Championship Qualifiers but I was pretty shocked.
My plan was to forcefully take the position from him but I doubt I can replicate his great success
Does this mean you can add Fabrizio Constantini to the hall of fame :P0

Alex Jones at Merthyr - Update
Short update for this one, but I am going to put this challenge on hold for a while. Sorry to anyone that was enjoying the updates but I plan to continue it eventually!
In short, I lose the motivation for it. I think I realised how much of a mammoth task this was going to be (in England specifically) and so I wanted to try something a bit easier.
The good news....I have found another team to do this challenge with, in a different continent. Looking through other peoples saves here it seems a bit easier in other continents. There was a country I had in mind before I picked Merthyr which would have been a lot of fun but their league wasn't available in the base game. I have managed to get the league sorted now so I am going to give that a go and hopefully will bring an update on that one later today (if I don't get sacked first season).
