I get the impression the generation of pundits and journalists in their late 30s and 40s are genuinely so surprised to see an England team do well that they look at it purely black and white and say England are doing well. Southgate’s success might count against him here. A side that finished their last two tournaments in the semis then the final going out in the quarters is objectively deterioration.

Not a sacking. More a time for different ideas. Maybe a new senior role for Southgate created at the FA.
