I've sporadically employed a Wide TQ in the past and they seem to naturally spread the width a bit more than some of the other wide options (and can be given Stay Wider PI if need be as well). So with a MEZ(s) naturally moving into the half spaces, it should provide a passing option for when the TQ does move out wider (and helps it not get isolated). And if he comes inside, maybe you overload the opposition fullback?
Will be looking to try that pair combination in my next season though.

In addition to BWMs or an AM, I've had some measure of success with both the CM-A and B2B roles when it comes to having four pressing up front. They tend to be in more advanced positions when you lose possession and thus able to join in the press sooner.
Against this sort of opposition have you considered pushing the DLP into the CM strata?

I'm inclined to think that part of the issue lay with the combination of TIs being used, as previously mentioned by CrusaderStar and Experienced Defender rather than simply just not being able to press opposition successfully.
It's not a must to play a mid or low block with 4231. It's a top heavy formation, so it can be easier to set up to play with a high press compared to say a 433.

They move centrally in the final third to present as a goal scoring option and will happen regardless of width setting. And judging by the position of the winger and the full back marking him, I assume the ball was out towards left prior to coming centrally?

If the 2nd tactic (attacking mentality) is what you are using against these teams that park the bus, then it would explain what you're experiencing re: high possession from teams parking the bus. Extremely aggressive press + PGKD with a formation that isn't really suited to it (IMO).

I normally only play on Extremely Narrow or Fairly Narrow, irregardless of whether a team is setting out to park the bus or not. But that slightly more compact nature makes sense as it's typically paired with shorter passing at a minimum. Depending on formation/roles, it doesn't really stop you from utilising the full width of the pitch anyway.
If I were looking to play a more direct passing style though, I'd probably be opting for far more width.

I'm trying it with a CF(A) at present (but with different personnel I would still be using some forward role on attack duty).
My logic here being, TQ is still a creator and thus needs options to play in when he isn't making a chance for himself. Support duty forward might be too conservative in that regard. Will see how it plays for a few matches.
