Kane didn't look anything doing it at the time. We had faith and got lucky with that faith
Trying to avoid the cliche, but you make your luck. The better management decisions lead to more 'luck'. As long as Kane was fit, the chances of him catching form eventually were always pretty good.
Again, who would you have dropped Kane for?

Plenty of examples of strikers in poor form in a major tournament, or leading up to it, then producing later. Shearer going into Euro 96, Paulo Rossi was awful in the 1982 group games, didn't Lineker have a poor start to the 1986 world cup? Again you back your big players. Kane's relationship with Southgate must be really strong now with the faith Southgate showed in him, to the extent of not even putting DLC on the bench when fans were wanting Kane dropped. That's smart management and faith in your best players.

Kane has also shown time and time again that he ends poor runs of form with brilliant goal scoring runs.

You only have a few games in tournament football. It's completely different to a qualifying campaign or a league campaign.
That's obvious. But you back your top players to deliver when it gets to the big games. Who honestly would have you have picked instead of Kane?

If Muller scores and Germany went on to beat us, they'd be in the final tomorrow and we'd all be praising how they have the big game mentality and always deliver when it matters.
They usually do tbf!

It is when said player isn't showing any of that forum, faith and luck. Thankfully it paid off. If it hadn't I very much doubt people would be saying the same things
Of course they wouldn't say the same things. But that's football. We're also talking of a small sample size of games. If Kane has had a poor finish to the season, fair enough. But a world class player coming of a brilliant season, then having a few bad games, isn't enough to drop him. Then who would have replaced him? DLC would have been a huge drop off.

Can't even compare Sterling and Kane's performances this tournament. Sterling has been head and shoulders above him, and everyone else.
That wasn't the point themadsheep2001. The point was staying loyal to Sterling despite many fans demanding he be dropped, paid off. Staying loyal to Kane despite many fans demanding he be dropped, paid off. Kane was immense in the SF.

Kane also drops into midfield a lot for England too tbf, regarding one of the earlier points.

Thank god he got a bit of luck with the decision
Southgate is very loyal to his players, that isn't luck. An awful lot of people wanted Sterling dropped as well, how did that turn out? Not luck if his loyalty is often rewarded.

In hindsight yes. He was dreadful at the time. And to say people are fickle for pointing this out is ridiculous imo
Thank god Southgate wasn't fickle!

Well yeah, when your form negatively impacts the side, which it did, because we almost played with 10 men at times, that's completely fair point to raise. We've been here before with Rooney. If Kane had played like that against Germany we'd have been out
Rooney’s poor tournaments had injury, suspension or poor form leading up to them, or forcing him into CM.
Kane has had one of his best seasons.
I mean clearly not dropping him was correct ….

Not really. He was absolutely atrocious the first three games then woke up
Criticising his poor performances objectively was completely fair. Some of the comments, can’t remember which thread, but some posters were calling him lazy!
But wanting to drop our world class striker? Which a lot of people wanted.

Busquets/Pedri/Koke isn't better than Phillips/Rice/Mount? Wake up.
I’m with EUH. England are a very good team, attack and defence are brilliant.
Let’s not kid ourselves over midfield …it’s decent, but nothing compared to Spain’s

To be fair quite a few of the fouls were Kane crumbling to the floor at the mere sight of a Dane

I guess this thread shows how fickle football fans can be ….

Also, "found their inner Brazil" ffs.
The last four World Cups Brazil have either gone out in the quarters, or stumbled through to the last four with home advantage and then shipped seven goals
When is this sycophantic nonsense going to end. It's 20 years since they have been any good.
Gosh you will be miserable if England lose!

people thought the same about rooney though. for years you'd hear how he could drop off into midfield etc
But one was a change in position the other is not

just never know with injuries and others may come through too
rooney scored his 50th goal when he was 29
still only managed 3 after that
True, but Kane’s style of play will be more effective in his 30s than Rooney

I expect an Iniesta like tour of every football ground next season with all opposition fans standing and applauding Sterling whenever he's subbed off
Not Liverpool fans though ….

I think CM is our weakest area of the pitch ….but Bellingham will soon dominate there

Sterling is the only player to have ever dived and is definitely only hated by Liverpool fans because of this fact. (No Liverpool player has ever dived)
The funny thing is Salah is one of the biggest divers

It was a home game with very little away fans against a 5 mil football nation, with their star player out, and the Three lions needed a controversial penalty late in the extra time to win. I hope Southgate will get the boys down to Earth quickly or they'll be humiliated come Sunday.
No one cares lad

I love Rice and Phillips for what they've done this summer. But they are a middle tier midfield. Maybe a bit harsh but it does worry me for Sunday.
I much more confident in our defence and front 3 against Italy. Midfield is a worry. Will need monster performances from them
Yes, the biggest weakness of the pitch.
if Bellingham was a bit older and Hendo a bit more match fit ….

Rice and Phillips are good and I think they've played as well as they can. But England will be so much better in the centre when Bellingham matures.
