...Even if we put him as the weak link, Fabianski is way worse and Vermaelen as LB isn't far off. I don't rate Kyle Walker, either, but English people will get mad...

I feel like Walker's one of those players that can be both overhated and overrated, depending on who you ask. I think he's grown a lot though under Guardiola's tutelage and is pretty much emblematic of the tactically versatile modern fullback; i.e. reasonably quick, can distribute the ball smartly, put in a good cross, get up and down the pitch and tuck inside when needed, even though he might not be outstanding in any one of those things.

Yeah, I think Gunman already amended the broken link. Works for me now.

...Would have liked hazzaj team better if it had Poborsky right wing, Zola as a trequartista and Effenberg - Modric as part of a double pivot...

could have done that, I guess I just prefer the innate flexibility of the 4-3-3 - situationally I'd see opportunities for Poborský to get wide and Zola to tuck in, it is a Cruyff team after all, so positional play should be the order of the day :D

I'm afraid the image for hazzaj isn't working.

shows up fine my end, weird

Also bit surprised to end up here, but hoping now my upgrades can give me a fighting chance against a quality looking side from Yuko.
Modrić gives me a more natural centre midfield option in there and beefs up the creativity, and one advantage I think I still retain over him is the ability to press - Villa having been part of a Barcelona team that pioneered the approach of looking for quick turnovers immediately after loving the ball, and the tactical nous of Cruyff should be ideal for leading the press, where Yuko's front three are perhaps less suited.

Would also have thought Beckenbauer would be more suited to a midfield role than Katanec in the modern game.

That said, would be no shame in me losing here either, and if Yuko prevails I'll be backing him to go all the way.

P.S. @Yuko voted for you so I could also vote in the other matchup, would be grand if you could return it la

Oof. The rest of the squad has tested negative apparently but I wonder what the deal is with Busquets then? Does he have to self-isolate or something? That presumably rules him out of at least their first game?

Blessing for Spain fans if it means Luis Enrique can't pick him, the guy's not looked good at international level for at least 3 years now.

  5. Even with the slight awkwardness of Abidal at centre back, it's hard to look past that front three of Scott's, and I reckon having Guerreiro on the left flank does wonders for the side's balance.

Think I'll go for Maxey second and Jorg third, with Jorg there's only really van Basten that stands out as really great, and there's a fair few bodges in the midfield and defence that drag it down (plus bitterness from me for swiping Tymoshchuk and putting him at centre back, the cheek!) You can never say enough good things about Harry Kane imo, plus we shouldn't forget what a quality player Konoplyanka was on his day, very unlucky not to win a Europa League too with Dnipro (who've since gone bust). Midfield also looks just better structured compared to Jorg's.

  6. I suppose I ought to defend my team a bit here, so here goes:

Cruyff, Villa, Zola - what's not to like? One of the most skilful and intelligent players the world has seen, and a pioneer of modern football, the deadliest striker in arguably both the world's best ever club and international teams, and a Chelsea and Premier League legend, who although didn't achieve what he should have done with his national side will always be remembered as one of the English top flight's finest exports.

Midfield is where I've taken a couple of liberties, but the skillset of Poborský could easily be adapted to the role of a midfield creator in this system, and switching him to the left side gives him the opportunity to play inswinging balls to the opposite side. Boban is another who has plenty of experience playing wide but can also tuck inside, and the all round ability and work-rate of Effenberg will help knit the midfield together, as long as hes not giving his manager the finger.

In defence I've gone for players with ball-playing ability as well as positional smarts, Desailly should need no introduction, but those of you familiar with Super Depor and Benítez's Valencia should recognise the ability of Đukić (let's just forget that infamous penalty miss though shall we!). in Walker you have the archetypal modern fullback capable of both over- and underlapping, Vermaelen on the opposite side is a bit of a compromise but he has played there for his country after all, and his experience as a midfielder in part of his youth should stand him in good stead for this team. Fabiański compares very favourably to both de Gea and Ederson in terms of recent shot-stopping statistics, so he's no weakness either.

Good side right? I won't bite you if you vote for managerdude's XI either, (it's pretty good), but losing to one with that eejit Peter Shilton in might sting a bit more :D

  7. Another tough one to call - gonna hand it to Butts though, Igor [any relation to Henry?] Tudor might look a bit awkward on the face of it, but in a modern 4-3-3 it probably makes sense if he's going to be spending a fair amount of time sitting in between the centre backs. Attack might not look the paciest but when you have de Bruyne and Sneijder serving up the play, and the quality of fullbacks he has to support, it looks more than capable of piling on the goals.

Harrysseas and bestbrother again very tough to separate - Harry has the better centrebacks and strikers - Nani also deserved more praise than he got for being a mostly quality winger down the years for Man Untied and Portugal - bestbrother has him in the creativity department, and whilst neither has particularly impressive fullbacks, at least bestie isn't shoehorning Christian Fuchs into the right of his defence! In the end I think I'll give it to bestbrother on the comparitive strength of his goalkeeper, between the two it could easily just be a mad game where there's plenty of space between each others' lines - so it could all come down to who has the better stopper, and I'm backing Yashin to be the man.

  8. Too much silliness in SouthCoastRed's team for me, Van Kerkhoven at right back, Keane on the right wing, the perennially overrated Kasper Schmeichel... Niko Kranjčar... even N'Golo Kanté can't plaster over all those cracks!

The tough decision is with the two rhyming opponents; Dejan Stanković is a pet favourite player of mine; great workrate and technique, and a big fan of a goal from absurdly long ranges. beyond him you've basically got a textbook attack for international football, pace, dribbling, guile, striking instincts, headers... all bases covered really - biggest weakness in Marius' team is the two centre backs probably, neither the most technically gifted, and Šimić more suited to right back than in the middle.

For Darius, you've got the best centre forward going at the moment in Lewandowski, and again he's proven to be a manager who's taken functionality into consideration when constructing his midfield; van Bommel in there allows you to carry a relative luxury like Prosinečki for example. I think his defence just about edges out Marius' but I'll hand the tie to the Inter fan just based on the added ability to play a more modern brand of football, though really I'd like to give this one a draw!

  9. Midfield balance is coming at a premium in these lineups it seems, and Golden Boy's got that department comfortably won, couple that with two Ballon d'Or winners in attack and good fullbacks capable of playing the modern game? He takes the group for me.

Feels harsh to have a team with Šuker and Henry up front come last, and grff's choice of Hierro also deserves recognition, but beyond his back four he doesn't have much in terms of defensive contribution, in a bit of contrast to PaulHartman's midfield, who I think also balances pace creativity and goal scoring quite well, not to mention in Oliver Kahn is has a goalkeeper that can steal games almost on his own.

  10. No runaway winner here, each team has their strengths and weaknesses. Citizen Kane's team's full of goalscorers and Ibrahimović is a great choice to help facilitiate that midfield striking power, but no real defensive option in mid either, and both the centre backs have been known to be flaky occasionally, also probably the weakest goalie of the three.

By contrast, SRL88's midfield is more defensively sound, but lacking natural width, and you'd probably want a more modern fullback on the left than Iosifidis to help balance that out. Blanc might be the best centre back in the teams out of all six, and the stakhanovite Paulo Ferreira is sure to help keep things functioning on the right, but in contrast to Kane's team, the forwards lack a bit of height, and might end up getting in each others' way a bit.

Cartman's defence has been brough up as an issue, but I don't think it hamstrings the team as much as others have suggested. Blind was a Champions League winning defender after all in a very aggressive Ajax team, and Ćorluka was a decent Premier League defender at worst. Think the more pressing issues are Hamšík operating deeper than he's used to and Rooney not having a striking partner to play off, but he's got Lothar goddamn Matthäus, and the pace of Damien Duff is sure to cause havoc especially amongst his two opponent's left sides.

Gonna go Kane over Cartman over SRL here, definitely arguable either way though.

    Solid squad, no issues really.

yeah, I did expect all four RBs to be taken, and it's not the daftest decision given the extra room in the squad, and they all have their different situational uses. If I had a gun to my head and had to drop one, it'd probably be James missing out (including Greenwood at his expense), but I'm most glad he called up Saka and Bellingham than anything else.

  12. Well everyone seems to like to be having a go at Gareth Southgate for overloading his squad with right-backs, but it's a trend that's evidently catching, as Haguey's fielding two in his XI right here! Caveat being of course that one of the two has a reasonable claim to being the greatest fullback of all time. I like the fact that all his defence were known as good ball-players to varying degrees, Ivan Perišić was a quality player in his day that never quite got the praise he deserved, midfield's oozing creativity too... does it beat Sano's team though?

I suppose it depends how harshly I penalise him for having two of his key attackers for playing in the era that predated modern fitness and conditioning - then again Müller as a pure finisher could probably transfer over just fine and not look out of place with the right team around him; Miroslav Klose was one of the most effective strikers in international football after all. Secondly, the midfield of Neeskens-Guardiola-Zahovič just drips with guile, and if athleticism was ever a concern his defence has no trouble carrying that load. I think I'll give Sano the nod in a very close encounter!

Then there's Crispypaul's team... I'm sorry but as good a player as Schweinsteiger was in his prime, there's no way he can carry that midfield on his own, particularly with the defence which was never exactly renowned for its pace, limited looking fullbacks... Batshuayi on the wing... Probably has the best goalie of the three but compared to the other two teams there's just too many problems here, and unfortunately looking at the opposition I don't see it getting out of the group.
