Absolute basics of an online game

Me and a mate are both new to playing FM23 online. So would love some very basic information from a more experienced player. Apologies if some of these questions appear stupid but we've never played in an online game together before.

Do we both need to be online at the same time? What happens if we're not? 

Is it right that only one of us can be active with our teams at the same time - employing staff, scouting and buying players, setting tactics etc? If so, how does the second player get to take part and when?

Can only one players team play a match at a time? If my mate is in control as his team plays a match, how do I control my team if they are playing at the same time as they often will be?

And what happens when our teams play each other? We will both want to make adjustments to tactics etc during the match but can't if only one player has control.

I'm sure there will be more questions but the above would be a good start.

Both have to been online.  You can play matches, at the same time.    You can make a adjustment , when you both play each other.    Make a game,  and arranged a friendly against eact other, just testing, to see how it goes.
