FIFA Club World Cup qualification system

Recommended Posts

Hello

Does anybody can explain me how are defined the teams qualified to play the FIFA Club World Cup in 2021 and editions after it, in the new format of the competition? I am playing with a brazilian team and have been qualified to play it in 2021, but I haven't even been on a Copa Libertadores final (disqualified in quarter-final on season 2020), and this team doesn't win it in real life since 2010...

So, if anybody can explain to me how teams qualify to play in this tournament, I would be very glad.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your reply, but actually those informations aren't official. CONMEBOL, for example, haven't confirmed how the teams will qualify to the new championship. See this:

"SOUTH AMERICA

While South America will get six slots, only the process for distributing four of them has been settled. They will go to the 2019 and 2020 winners of CONEMBOL's two competitions: The Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana.

The document shows no plan for determining the route to securing the remaining two berths or the limits on national representation.

NORTH AND CENTRAL AMERICA

The 2021 Concacaf Champions League finalists will qualify but a process for deciding the third slot was left hanging in the FIFA Council document."-  https://www.si.com/soccer/2019/10/24/fifa-club-world-cup-expanded-china-2021

And this Brazilian article says that Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) doesn't agree with the format proposed by CONMEBOL that was quoted by the link above. https://globoesporte.globo.com/futebol/times/flamengo/noticia/mesmo-sem-criterios-definidos-flamengo-ja-esta-garantido-no-mundial-de-clubes-de-2021-entenda.ghtml

In english: https://translate.google.com.br/translate?hl=pt-BR&sl=pt&tl=en&u=https%3A%2F%2Fgloboesporte.globo.com%2Ffutebol%2Ftimes%2Fflamengo%2Fnoticia%2Fmesmo-sem-criterios-definidos-flamengo-ja-esta-garantido-no-mundial-de-clubes-de-2021-entenda.ghtml

Those are just plans, nothing confirmed yet, and even if what is in the Wikipedia page was confirmed it isn't what is happening in Football Manager, because, like I said, I haven't won the Copa Libertadores, and in real life the last time the club has won it was in 2010, but the team has classified to play the Club World Cup 2021 anyway. So, I have no idea how teams are qualified to play the competition in FM, wonder if someone can explain me.

Looking at the source of that is an article from Reuters (https://www.reuters.com/article/us-soccer-fifa-club-exclusive/soccer-qualifying-for-new-club-world-cup-would-take-place-over-four-seasons-idUSKBN1HK1WW)

In that it says:

Quote

If the same team qualified more than once, a replacement would be chosen using a coefficient system.

So I would imagine that this is what happens.

Anyway, since it is established it's going to happen, but if it's not entirely sure how it's supposed to happen, I'd guess SI have "best guessed" as to how it will be, and coefficient would be the right way then.

In my game, Flamengo has won the Copa Libertadores again in 2020, so the last 4 champions are: Flamengo 20, Flamengo 19, River Plate 18, Grêmio 17. But only Flamengo has qualified for the Club World Cup 2021, River Plate and Grêmio are not there... Maybe the game is only using the south american club ranking to determine who qualifies? Right now I can't do it, but when I return home I will check the ranking to see if it checks... Haven't thought of that.
