It was and although I cant feel sorry too much for Penarol, it was heartbreak for my 'Manyas side' as we fought hard to force extra time. Im surprised both teams ended with 11 men with the cards and tackles flying in, but Nacional have the upperhand right now and its hard for Penarol to break it. bestbrother
Our Kev! Kevin Mendez, born in Bolivia yet is a legend to all those that don the Yellow and Black of Penarol. A teenager when he joined Penarol, Mendez would soon sign for AS Roma in Italy without playing an official match for the Manyas. A year long spell in Switzerland would see an impressive return of 11 goals with Lausanne, but it was his return to Penarol that ignited the Mendez love affair. With the team crying out for goals, Penarol would acquire the rights of Mendez on a year long loan in 2016/17, a deal that should have kick started a career for him back in Europe. However 4 season long loans later and with his Roma contract up, Mendez would sign permanently with Penarol and further entrench himself in the hearts of Manyas worldwide. In his 9 years at the club, he has surpassed the legned of Fernando Moreno to be the clubs leading goalscorer (Uruguayan Championship) with 218, from just 297 appearances. Further to that he is just 12 shy of Moreno's league record of 230, a target that will be broken in the upcoming season in all likelihood. Its not just domestic honours for Mendez, as his recent nomination and subsequent winning of the Rey del Futbol de America is not just a watershed for him, but also Uruguayan football as he is the first ever domestic based player to claim the honour of being the best player on the continent. With near on 250 goals in all competitions, it is likely that Mendez will break the 300 barrier before his time is up. However the chase to 440 and a club record set by Moreno is a little further away and will prove a tougher challenge to crack. Whatever the outcome for Mendez, his career so far has written him into Penarol folklore. The task at hand is now not one of individual targets, but to push Penarol back to the top both domestically and in South America, before time is called on one of the greatest careers ever told in the Yellow and Black of Penarol. bestbrother
2025/26: El Final de una era Campeonato Uruguayo - Runners Up Apertura Standings Clausura Standings Aggregate Standings After 3 years of being the top dog in Uruguay, our time has come to an end and in the abruptest of manners. First off our chase of Penarol in the Torneo Apertura ended with 3 defeats, including a 3-2 loss to Manyas, as we fell well short of expectations and 4pts adrift in 2nd place. Then in the Clausura, with a chance to redeem ourselves and at least force a playoff, we would slip up by being held goalless at home to Oriental de la Paz, a result that cost us top spot and allowed Penarol to win not only the Clausura, but claim the Campeonato Uruguayo by topping all 3 tables at our expense. Copa Libertadores - Last 16 A solid effort in the group phase saw us finish 2nd only to River Plate, a team that had beaten us twice and notching 4 on both occasions. Our reward for qualifying would be a tie with Mexicans' Cruz Azul and although we would lose the first leg at home 2-1, we still had a chance when we crossed into North America. Unfortunately we failed to make any significant chances and when Cruz Azul scored a late penalty, our run in the Libertadores came to an end in disappointing circumstances. Copa Sudamericana - Quarter Finals Our normal routine of crashing out early would stop this year, as we got off to a flying start by smashing regular foe Libertad for 6 in Uruguay. We would lose heavily in the return, but advanced 7-4 on aggregate. We then beat Alianza Petrolera and Remo as we could call on handy 3-1 home wins on both occasions to secure the deal. Sadly and cruelly our efforts would end there as a pair of goalless draws with Botafogo (Brazil), saw us then lose in front of a packed Gran Parque Central on a penalty shootout. Clásico del fútbol UruguayoP30 W9 D6 L15 F75 A78 A win a piece this year, our 6-3 win at Campeon del Siglo should have secured us the Torneo Clausura, but in the end results elsewhere made it matter little in our chase for a 4th straight Campeonato Uruguayo. The $7,000,000+ that this bought in allowed us to re-invest with varying success. Aispuru came in for $2m but has failed to insert himself into the team as a regular, however the combined $2.7m spent on new defensive pairing Roberts and Suarez has reaped more rewards. Jefferson and Herrera are players that should have a bright future at the club, but will require patience and development. bestbrother
2025/26: CAMPEON! Campeonato Uruguayo - CAMPEON Apertura Standings Clausura Standings Aggregate Standings It has been a while but finally not only do we win the Campeonato Uruguayo once more, but we do it in style, topping both the Torneo Apertura and Clausura ahead of poor old Nacional. The Apertura saw us lose just once as we were in control of the stage, thanks in part to the 3 defeats Nacional suffered as they failed to show the form that has seen them dominate domesic football in recent years. The Clausura proved to be more challenging and when Nacional beat us in the Clasico, things looked bleak. However we rallied and our 13 wins, 26 across the season, would be enough to edge out our rival by 2pts and ensure that a final day win over relegated Miramar Misiones would be one of celebration and relief all round. Copa Libertadores - Last 16 Frustration for us again in the Libertadores as we topped a tough group that saw us stuff Brazilian giants Flamengo 4-0, in one of the great nights of football in Montevideo. Our reward for winning the group would be a tie with Boca Juniors. The 1st leg would decide our fate as we lost 4-1 at La Bombonera, a devastating blow. The return would see us fail to make a dent on the scoreline, drawing 0-0 and once again failing to progress on the continental stage. Clásico del fútbol UruguayoP30 W15 D6 L9 F78 A76 We may have lost 6-3 at home, but in the end we can celebrate a title once more and a split across the 2 games is a minor issue in the grand scheme of this season. The latter leaves the club as a legend, playing near on 200 games for the club and winning various awards as he proved to be one of the best creative outlets to wear the famous colours. Salazar however had one great year at the club before enforcing a release clause to make his mark in Europe, with a move to Portugal for a small profit. We would spend heavily to add 4 faces to the squad. Saaverda comes back to Uruguay after a failed stint at Juventus, whilst Penagos, Garcia and a new Salazar added to our foreign quota in our squad. I just give players nicknames sometimes if they warrant it, and with it being appropriate, he is renamed 'Messi'. I think i mentioned it somewhere in this thread, but cant remember, so apologies for the confusion :o Same with a Nacional midfielder, Sidnei Verardi, I have him named Si'Ve
