2013/14 December/January Round Up

Empoli 2-1 Bassano

Our poor form continues although we looked like we might get something from this game for a while. Ibrahima Diouf had put us in front where we stayed until the 76th minute when Dario Danielli levelled. 6 minutes from the end we fell behind to a Claudio Coralli goal and we weren't able to find a way back.

Bassano 1-1 Foggia

A first goal from full back Ruben Canelada earned us a point after Iosu Esnaola had put the visitors in front.

Brescia 3-1 Bassano

This was our 2nd game of the season on tv and our 2nd 3-1 defeat. This was all over after the first half as Bartosz Salamon, Joeri Dequevy and Andrea Caracciolo all scored. We got a late goal through Marco Gaeta but it wasn't enough and we finish the year in 14th place.

Bassano 2-0 Torino

A Marco Gaeta and Simone Iocolano goal gave us only our 2nd win since mid October against underperforming Torino.

Bassano 1-1 Juve Stabia

We started the second half of the season the way we started the first with a draw against fellow promoted side Juve Stabia. Lasse Sobiech put the visitors in front before we levelled through a Michele Rigione header.

Bassano 2-0 Padova

We took maximum advantage of our 3rd home game of the month as we despatched our parent side Padova. Second half goals from Simone Iocolano and Emanuele Berrettoni saw us grab all 3 points.

Review:

December was pretty bad just 1 point from 3 but with all 3 of January's games at home we bounced back and got 7 points giving us 8 from 6. During January the board upped the wage budget meaning we were able to bring in Eros Pelligrini at right back who is a big upgrade for us.

2013/14 February Round Up

Novara 2-0 Bassano

We started the month off of in poor fashion with a dissapointing defeat. Ruben Canelada put into our net to open the scoring and Fancesco Lodi added the 2nd late on.

Grosseto 3-0 Bassano

We headed to top of the table Grosseto and were taught a lesson. Alberto Libertazzi's brace put the hosts in control before Sergi Roberto added the 3rd.

Bassano 2-3 Cesena

After losing to the team at the top of the table we took on the team in 2nd. The first half was a complete disaster and we were blown away. Nill De Pauw scored the opener, Rolando Bianchi then added a penalty before Ciprian Deac got the 3rd. In the second half though we started a fight back Marco Gaeta got the first before Simone Iocolano grabbed a 2nd. We couldn't though find a way to get an equaliser and lost our 3rd game in a row.

Verona 0-1 Bassano

Losing to the top 2 in the previous 2 games we took on the bottom side and ended our losing streak. Michele Rigione's header was the only goal of the game.

Review:

Terrible month 3 defeats to start the month was awful; the win over Verona was much needed. Our form needs to improve next month otherwise we are going to slide closer to a potential relegation playoff.

2013/14 March Round Up

Bassano 2-1 Sassuolo

Marco Gaeta was the hero as his brace saw us home. He opened the scoring before Michael Koch levelled but Gaeta wasn't done and 2 minutes from time he stroked home the winner.

Livorno 1-2 Bassano

Livorno were punished by an early red card. They took the lead after just 6 minutes through a Leopoldo Fortunato goal. Then they went down to 10 men and from there they struggled to hang on. Dario Venitucci got us level before Mateo Gaeta grabbed yet another goal to seal the win.

Bassano 1-0 Benevento

Michele Rigione grabbed the only goal of the game as we extended our winning run.

Siena 2-2 Bassano

Twice Siena came from behind to deny us victory. Emanuele Berrettoni gave us the lead after just 2 minutes and we held onto that for the majority of the game. Alexandrios Tziolis levelled after 79 but almost immediately we went back in front through Riccardo Brosco. Giacomo Beretta though then equalised again for the hosts to earn them a point.

Bassano 1-2 AlbinoLeffe

Our unbeaten run came to a shuddering end with a dissapointing defeat. Sal Zizzo put the visitors in front before Marco Gaeta equalised. Roberto Previtali though then popped up to nod home the winner.

Frosinone 1-0 Bassano

A game that looked as if it was heading for a draw ended in major dissapointment when Antonio Donnarumma deflected a cross into the back of our net.

Review:

A great start to the month as we grabbed 10 points from the first 4 games 2 dissapointing defeats though to end of the month. The positive is that we are pretty much safe now which is a fantastic achievement and a top half finish may not be beyond us if we can become a bit more consistent in the remaining games.

2013/14 April Round Up

Crotone 1-1 Bassano

Our winless run stretched to 4 as Emanuele Berrettoni's penalty was cancelled out by Ayube Dine.

Bassano 1-3 Pescara

A poor performance against 2nd placed Pescara saw us rightly punished. Soki N'Zinga and Francesco Dettori scored early before Marco Gaeta pulled 1 back. Dettori completed the scoring and sealed the win.

Piacenza 2-2 Bassano

Twice we came from behind to rescue a point. Davide Succi scored the first but that was cancelled out by Adria Carmona. Michele Marcconi again put the hosts in front but 5 minutes from time Matteo Caciagli grabbed a deserved equaliser.

Bassano 1-0 Chievo

We left it late but finally we ended our winless streak as Ibrahima Diouf scored from the spot in the 4th minute of added on time.

Review:

Another dissapointing month. 5 points from 4 games; the defeat to Pescara was really poor we're counting down the games till the end of the season. It's been a good season overall and if we can bring in 3 or 4 players that can jump into the starting line up next season we might be able to push on and comfortably get inside the top half.

2013/14 May/June Round Up & Season Review

Modena 1-1 Bassano

Another late goal rescued us as sub Luca Ferrera grabbed a 92nd minute leveller to cancel out Gabriele Perico's opener.

Foggia 1-4 Bassano

This game was a look at what might have been. Last season both us and Foggia were promotoed. This season we survived and they went down in this game. Emanuele Berrettoni scored the 1st goal of the game whilst Matteo Caciagli grabbed the 2nd in the 46th minute. Foggia got 1 back through Karim El-Mourabet 3 minutes later and with the hosts pushing forward to get the draw that would at least extend their stay of execution by a week we caught them on the break. El-Mourabet took down Marco Gaeta in the box and was given a straight red card. Things got worse though as before the penalty Frederic Duplus was also sent off for complaining. Gaeta dusted himself off and stroked home the penalty. In the 94th minute more drama as Berrettoni was brought down and we got our 2nd penalty. Gaeta again stepped up and again scored.

Bassano 1-1 Brescia

After our recent late goals this time it was someone else's turn. Adria Carmona gave us the lead only for Ibou to equalise in the very last minute.

Bassano 1-1 Empoli

Our final home game turned into a bit of a dull affair. Shane Smeltz put the visitors in front before goal machine Marco Gaeta got us a point.

Torino 2-5 Bassano

We ended in the season in fantastic fashion by thumping Torino on the road. After a quiet opening 41 minutes Matteo Caciagli finally broke the deadlock. Alex Lopez levelled early in the 2nd period before Eugenie Guaresch turned a cross into his own net. Marco Gaeta then grabbed his 1st of the game before Pablo Granoche got 1 back. Gaeta though scored again giving him 25 for the season and then Ibrahima Diouf finished the rout 4 minutes from time.

Review:

Good way to end the season 2 wins, 3 draws. The 2 wins were especially satisfying; the victory over Torino was probably one of our best performances of the season. All in all it's been a very good season. We would have bitten your hand off if you had offered us 12th at the start of the campaign. I'm genuinely optimistic now; if we can bring in a Central Midfielder another Centre Back, a right winger and most importantly someone that can help Marco Gaeta score the goals then we should definitely finish top half and may even make the playoffs.

2014 Summer Round Up

I started the break by signing a new 1 year deal worth £3,500 per week. It was again a busy summer of players coming and going but we have dcefinitely improved the side from last year and so should be able to improve on last year's 12th place. The key signings look like Jordi Pablo who could be a real threat on the wing; Damian Lizio in the hole just behind goal achine Marco Gaeta or new signing Apostolos Vellios.

Board Expectation: Avoid Relegation

My Expectation: Top Half Finish

Media Prediction: 21st

Promotion Odds: 300/1

I'm not sure if the media or bookmakers saw us last season as they seem to have completely missed the face that we were pretty comfortably away from the drop zone and as we have improved over the summer the odds of 300/1 are quite frankly staggering.

2014/15 Squad

We played 3 games in pre season an 8-1 win over lower league Atletico Bosco a 2-1 victory over La Liga team Valladolid and then a 2-0 defeat to fellow La Liga team Villareal.

Bassano 1-0 Ternana (Coppa Italia 2nd Qualifying Round)

Our first competitive game of the season turned out to be a tense tight affair. The only goal of the game came in the 68th minute when centre back Riccardo Brosco headed home a Jordi Pablo corner.

2014/15 August/September Round Up

Parma 1-0 Bassano

We started the season with what on paper was the toughest game we will face this season. In the end we came out of the game feeling pretty good after giving them a test. Miguel Britos goal was enough to give the hosts the win.

Bassano 2-1 Frosinone

We came from behind to start our home league campaign off with a win. Alessio Manzoni gave the visitors a goal lead at the break before Michele Rigione and then a Mauro Minelli own goal turned the game round.

Siena 2-3 Bassano

A stunning comeback saw us grab our first away win of the season. Gael Genevier and Emanuele Calaio put the hosts in front before Damian Lizio's double saw us draw level. Adria Carmona then grabbed the winner to complete the victory.

Bassano 2-0 Novara

A comfortable victory saw us maintain our winning streak. Jordi Pablo and Simone Iocolano were the heroes for us.

Cosenza 4-4 Bassano

We are getting into the habit of coming from behind. Enzo Scorza scored the opener before Damian Lizio levelled. Daniele Mainini put the hosts back in front and Daniele Degano doubled the lead. Marco Geata grabbed 1 back only for Degano to get his 2nd. Geata though then took over scoring twice more to complete his hat trick and earn us a point.

Bassano 2-0 AlbinoLeffe

We returned to winning ways and kept our 2nd clean sheet of the season with an easy win. Damian Lizio and sub Apostolos Vellios grabbed the goals.

Review:

A fantastic start to the season. Only 1 defeat and that was to the odds on favourites for the title. I'm very happy with the impact of our new signings especially Damian Lizio who looks like he could be a great player for us this season. If we could stop going behind so many times we wouldn't have to keep coming back and that is probably our only real concern so far.

2014/15 October Round Up

Sassuolo 1-3 Bassano

A great start to the month as we headed to 3rd placed Sassuolo. Marco Gaeta grabbed a brace whilst Adria Carmona got the 3rd. Salvatore Bruno slotted home a penalty for a consolation.

Bassano 4-0 Piacenza

Bottom side Piacenza came to town and we sent them packing with a heavy defeat. Damian Lizio opened the scoring before a Michele Rigione header made it 2 at the break. Adria Carmona got the 3rd on the break and Fabrizio Bizzarri completed the rout. That win put us top of the table for the first time this season.

Cesena 1-1 Bassano

This was a battle between 2nd and 1st. Damian Lizio continued his great scoring run by bagging the opener before 2nd placed Cesena levelled through Nicolao Dumitru.

Bassano 2-0 Torino

We continued our run of games against sides near the top as we took on 5th placed Torino. That didn't stop our momentum though and Damian Lizio and Marco Gaeta grabbed the goals to continue our unbeaten streak.

Bassano 1-0 Gubbio

Another win another clean sheet. Riccardo Brosco's 8th minute header was more than enough.

Bologna 0-1 Bassano (Coppa Italia 3rd Qualifying Round)

A fantastic victory at Serie A side Bologna in what is probably the best individual result in the club's history. Adria Carmona was the man who goes down in history as he stroked home in the 60th minute. We will now head to another Serie A side Lecce as we look to make it to the 1st round.

Review:

A great month that showed just how good this team is. We took on plenty of sides at the top and we won every game bar 1. The Bologna result is fantastic for us and really puts down a marker.

2014/15 November Round Up

Livorno 2-4 Bassano

A great comeback saw us continue our good form. Edward Ofere had put the hosts 2 up at the break. A double of our own from Damian Lizio and goals from Riccardo Brosco and Matea Gaeta though saw us get the 3 points.

Bassano 0-0 Triestina

Lowly Triestina came for a point and thats whay they got.

Portosummaga 2-0 Bassano

Our unbeaten run came to a dissapointing end as Julian Di Cosmo and Cristian Altinier both scored for the hosts.

Bassano 1-2 Reggina

The battle between 1st and 2nd ended in dissapointment as Emil Hallfreosson scored in ijujry time to give the visitors victory. Earlier we had taken the lead when Cristian Puggioni turned a cross into his own net. Pablo Alvarez equalised from the spot before the late winner.

Bassano 1-1 Modena

Marco Gaeta stopped us from making it 3 defeats in a row with his 86th minute equaliser. Modena had led for the majority of the game thanks to Alessio Campagnacci's 8th minute header.

Atalanta 4-1 Bassano

We started this game 2nd with Atalanta 4th by the time it was over we had slipped down to 6th. Guillaume Gigliotti scored the opener and Pedro Oldoni doubled it. Michele Rigione got 1 back before Oldoni got his 2nd and Karamoko Cisse also scored.

Review:

Woeful month 5 points from 6 games is relegation form not playoff form. We need to pick it up in December before the winter break.

2014/15 December Round Up

Lecce 3-0 Bassano (Coppa Italia 4th Qualifying Round)

We crashed out of the cup as our poor form continued. Jeda hit a double and then Abdoulaye Sissoko slotted home the 3rd.

Empoli 1-1 Bassano

A hard earned draw against the side just below us in the table. Marco Gaeta opened the scoring before Fillipo Rocca made sure the points were shared.

Bassano 4-2 Brescia

We bounced back to winning ways with a good win over Brescia. Adria Carmona gave us the lead after just 20 seconds and 3 minutes later Daniel Bessa doubled the advantage. Michele Rigione made it 3 before the half whilst a Kevin Vinetot own goal just after the break made it 4. Brescia grabbed 2 late consolations through Robert Feczesin and Andrea Caracciolo.

Benevento 0-2 Bassano

We made it 2 wins from 2 to end the year as we beat bottom the table side Benevento. Adria Carmona got the opener before a 92nd minute penalty from Fabrizio Bizzarri sealed the win.

Review:

Dissapointed to be out of the cup but in truth it might be a blessing; now we can focus all our attentions on trying to make the playoffs. 7 points from 3 games in the league is a good return now we head into the winter break in a decent position.

2014/15 January Round Up

Bassano 1-0 Chievo

Damian Lizio started the year well for us as he grabbed the only goal in this game.

Bassano 2-2 Parma

The 2nd round of games began with a creditable draw against fellow promotion contenders Parma. Joazhino Arroe's 7th minute goal was quickly cancelled out by goals in the 10th and 12th minutes by wingers Adria Carmona and Jordi Pablo. An eros Pelligrini own goal ultimately gave Parma a point though.

Frosinone 0-0 Bassano

This won't go down as a classic. It did keep up our unbeaten run though.

Bassano 4-2 Siena

A good victory over an underperforming Siena side. Claudio Terzi's own goal was quickly levlled by Vincenzo Rennella. Marco Gaeta then struck twice before Fabrizio Bizzarri grabbed a 4th. Leon Andreasen got a consolation for the visitors 4 minutes from time.

Review:

A good month to start the year 8 points from 4 games keeps up the pressure on those around us and leaves us well placed to try and push on for the rest of the season. Our finances are also looking better as we are now in the black for the first time since I arrived.

2014/15 February Round Up

Novara 2-2 Bassano

A dissapointing draw as we lost a 2 goal lead. Riccardo Brosco's header and Damian Lizio's free kick had put us in control. After the break though it was a different story as Salvatore Margarita and then Ozturk Karatas scored to salvage a point for the home side.

Bassano 1-0 Cosenza

Valetine's day at Rino Mercante turned out pretty well as Adria Carmona scored the only goal after 67 minutes to keep us 3rd in the table.

AlbinoLeffe 1-1 Bassano

For a long, long time it looked as if our unbeaten run was about to come to an end. Matteo Borlini put the hosts in front in just the 5th minute and they held the lead until the very last minute of normal time when Damian Lizio slotted home a late equaliser.

Bassano 1-1 Sassuolo

The boot was on the other foot for this game as Juan Dominguez 89th minute goal nicked a point for the visitors. Adria Carmona had put us in front after 25 minutes and we were looking good for the win.

Review:

Still unbeaten in the league since November but 1 or 2 draws to many for my liking this month. Automatic promotion is still possible but it's looking more likely we may have to chance our arm in the playoffs.

2014/15 March Round Up

Piacenza 0-0 Bassano

Another draw to add to the collection we are fast becoming the 1 draw specialists in this division.

Bassano 2-0 Cesena

With this being our only home game of the month it was crucial we got a win and that's exactly what we did get. A Magnus Lekven own goal and a Damian Lizio special were more than enough to give us all 3 points.

Torino 4-5 Bassano

1st met 3rd in what turned out to be a classic. On the final day of last season we won here 5-2 in a great game. This was somehow even better than that as we snatched victory from the jaws of a draw after blowing a comfortable lead. Adria Carmona opened the scoring after 9 minutes before Eros Pelligrini put through his own net to level. Fabrizio Bizzarri put us back in front before the break; it was after the break though when the real drama happened. Marco Gaeta scored after 58 to put us in control and when he scored again 3 minutes later to put us 4-1 up you could be forgiven for thinking it was game over. Pablo Granoche though had other ideas and on 65 minutes he got 1 back. 4 minutes later and he scored again suddenly it was 4-3; the action wasn't done yet though. In the 73rd minute Torino got a penalty Enrico Gerani however saw his spot kick saved by Antonio Donnarumma. Just 7 minutes later though and Granoche completed his hat trick and what looked like the comeback. With both teams going for it however there was 1 final twist as Gaeta turned home a Carmona cross in the 91st minute to give us a famous victory.

Gubbio 0-0 Bassano

After scoring 5 at top of the table Torino this was always going to happen. We headed to bottom of the league Gubbio and despite creating a host of chances were unable to find the net once.

Triestina 1-2 Bassano

Marco Gaeta was again the hero as he grabbed the winner in this match. Luigi Della Rocca had put the hosts in front before Simone Iocolano almost immediately equalised.

Review:

Fantastic month 11 points from 5 games and 4 of them were away. A great win at Torino; the only down point was the fact we probably should have beaten Gubbio. 9 games to go and the top 5 are all in with a shout. Some big games coming up this month including a trip to Reggina and a home game against Atalanta.

2014/15 April Round Up

Bassano 0-0 Livorno

Another game we should have won but eneded with just 1 point after missing a host of chances.

Bassano 1-1 Portosummaga

Our chances of automatic promotion took another dent after Fillippo Santandrea's own goal was cancelled outr by Enrico Valentini.

Reggina 4-0 Bassano

Our unbeaten run came to a crushing end as we were thumped by leaders Reggina. Toni Calvo hit a double while Giorgos Tofas also got a brace as our hopes of finishing in the top 2 suffered another blow.

Bassano 3-1 Atalanta

We bounced back from our first defeat of the calendar year in the best possible way. Riccardo Brosco's own goal had put the visitors in front before we turned the game around in the 2nd half. Apostolos Vellios got the equaliser 5 minutes before Damian Lizio put us in front. Fabrizio Bizzarri's penalty 4 minutes from the end sealed the win.

Review:

Not a great month; 5 points from 4 games including a heavy defeat at Reggina. 10 points behind 2nd placed now with only 5 games to go; a playoff place though at least is pretty secure now though.

2014/15 May Round Up

Modena 2-3 Bassano

A good start to the month as we grabbed a last minute winner to beat Modena. Riccardo Brosco opened and finished the scoring. In between Apostolos Vellios scored for us with Carlo De Micco and piero Pastore grabbing Modena's goals.

Brescia 2-1 Bassano

Our automation promotion hopes were ended as we slumped to defeat at Brescia. Kevin Vinetot gave the hosts the lead before Simone Iocolano levlled. Jurgen Saumel grabbed the winner in the 68th minute.

Bassano 3-1 Benevento

We comfortably beat relegation threatened Benevento to keep up the pressure on Parma for 3rd place. Jordi Pablo scored the opener after just 3 minutes before goals from Marco Gaeta and Damian Lizio wrapped up the victory. Herve Onana grabbed an injury time consolation for the visitors.

Bassano 1-1 Empoli

We sealed our play off spot with this draw. Michele Rigione's header put us in front before Rasmus Falk levelled.

Chievo 2-1 Bassano

We ended the season with defeat as Chievo came from behind to snatch all 3 points. Santiago Moreno's own goal put us in front before Eros Pelligrini was sent off. Chievo then took advantage of the extra man as Valerio Verre and then De Paula scored.

Review:

10 points from 5 games sees us finish 4th in the table and book a play off place and so for the 4th time in 5 years I will be looking to get promoted the long way.

Bassano 1-0(2-1 on aggregate) Atalanta (Playoff Semi Final 2nd Leg)

[/TABLE]

With my contract running out at Bassano I started to question my next step. Stay and try and keep the club in Serie A or leave and seek pastures new. Despite having over £2m in the bank thanks to our final league position the board refused to upgrade any of the facilities and then came the message that made up my mind. Wage budget to try and keep us in one of the best leagues in the world: £50,000 per week; transfer budget: £250,000. That was enough to persuade me my future was not with Bassano and so I let my contract run out and left.

I applied for all the jobs I could in the top flight of all the loaded leagues but got a bunch of rejections. Then along came a few International jobs so I thought what the hell it wasn't my plan to start international management so soon but with nothing else on the table I applied for a few. It didn't take long for someone to get back to me and so I became the Manager of the 17th best ranked side in the world - Mali.

They don't look half bad a few decent players. No qualifiers or anything to speak of at the moment so I arranged a bunch of friendlies.

Mali 2-1 Congo

After going behind early through Thernand Minga we turned the game around and I started my international managerial career with a win. Destin Onka's own goal and a goal from derbutant Soungalo Yakauye grabbing the goals.

Mali 2-1 Gambia

Again we fell behind early but again we turned it around. Lamarana Monga got the opener for the visitors before Adama Toure levelled. An own goal from Kebba Ceesay sealed our victory.

Mali 5-1 Gabon

It seems we have to conceed the first goal before we start playing. This time it was Stephane N'Guema who gave the visitors the lead before Adama Toure and Sambou Yatabare made it 2-1 at the break. Bira Dembele then scored the 3rd before Yatabare grabbed his 2nd and our 4th. Dembele hit the 5th to continue my 100% record.

Whilst all this was going on I was still applying for top flight jobs across the world in a bid to return to club management. Finally someone came back to me with a yes and I signed a 3 year deal worth £4,000 per week to take over as the manager of:

Chicago20Fire20soccer20buckle.jpg

With the season pretty much over I only have 4 games left. The team hasn't won since July so these last few games are going to be about seeing who might actually be useful and giving the players some confidence back. The squad looks like it might have some players in it that I can use and the whole team now has an opportunity to impress me.

2015 Season Round Up

Chicago 5-2 New York

My managerial reign at Chicago got off to a flying start with a comprehensive victory over New York. We were 2 up inside 20 minutes thanks to Dasan Robinson and Raul Meraz. Marcelo Zaratin got 1 back before Meraz grabbed his 2nd. Roberto Romero again got New York back in the tie but an own goal from Aaron Pitchkolan and a 2nd goal from Robinson sealed the victory.

Chicago 7-0 Toronto

The scoreline only tells half the story from this game. Due to the MLS schedule this game was on the same day as several international matches. Fortunately for us we were only without 4 players; Toronto however were without 10 plus with 2 injuries it meant they had to use grey players. We took full advantage and our last home game of the season turned into a rout. Jose Joaquin Martinez hit a hat trick whilst Raul Meraz grabbed 2; there were also goals from Jun Marques Davidson and Ryan Pore.

Mali 4-1 Madagascar (International Friendly)

Just a couple of hours after our crushing win over Toronto Mali grabbed a comfortable win over Madagascar. Sambou Yatabore grabbed a brace whilst Bira Dembele and Mahamadou Sissoko also got themselves on the scoresheet. Paulin Voavy got a late consolation for the visitors but we maintain our 100% winning record since my arrival.

San Jose 2-0 Chicago

My winning start at Chicago came crashing to an end with defeat in San Jose. Steven Lenhart grabbed both goals as we lost in my first road game.

Dallas 1-4 Chicago

We made it 3 wins from 4 to end the season with a comfortable victory over playoff chasing Dallas. The home side took the lead through Marco Antonio Fuentes before Jose Joaquin Martinez levelled. In the second half Ryan Pore took over grabbing an 18 minute hat trick to seal the victory.

Review:

Promising signs as we won 3 of the last 4 games. We can certainly score goals but keeping them out could be a problem. I have already agreed to sign free agent goalkeeper Lee Grant and defender Corry Tobin had already agreed to join us before my arrival. We still need another defender or 2 and a couple of midfielders plus a 2nd striker to help Raul Meraz who is the only forward currently in the squad I think is capable enough of scoring on a regular basis.

In the playoff final Los Angeles beat Columbus 3-2 to clinch the MLS title. In Mali news we have been drawn in Group 10 in the 2nd round of the world cup qualification campaign. We will be playing alongside Equitorial Guinea, Rwanda and Zambia.

November 2015 - March 2016 Season Break Round Up

With the season over now came the crucial task of trying to rebuild this Chicago squad. We started by trying to bring in some free agents to give us some options before we had to cut down the squad. The highlights were Goalkeeper Lee Grant and Striker Andy Keogh whilst we also made sure we resigned all of our key current players. In the draft we had 4 selections where we took the best players available to try and improve the squad further.

I'm prertty happy with the team that we currently have now and I believe the playoffs are a real possibility. In pre season we played 4 won 4 all on the road. A 5-0 victory over New Orlans was followed with a 4-0 win over Arnett Gardens and 3-1 victories over Waterhouse and Reno.

Media Prediction: 8th

I also had 1 friendly with Mali; our last friendly before we start our World Cup qualifying campaign.

Slovenia 2-3 Mali

Without question our most difficult game so far but we maintained our 100% record with a late 89th minute winner from Sekou Maiga. Moussa Guindo's own goal gave the hosts the lead before Soungalo Yalcouye levelled. Abdou Traore put us in front mid way through the 2nd half before Kristian Kraus 84th minute goal looked as if it had wrapped up a draw. Maiga's late strike though made it 5 from 5 and set us up perfectly to start our qualifying campaign.

2016 March/April Round Up

Chicago 4-2 Toronto

A perfect start to the season as we got off to a winning start. Dmitry Torbinskiy put us in front after just 3 minutes before a Cory Gibbs header doubled the lead. Loris Azzolina's penalty made it 3 and although David Barral got 1 back the game was quickly finished off by Dasan robinson's goal. Ian Johnson got a consolation for the visitors 6 minutes from time.

Los Angeles 2-0 Chicago

Our first road game ended in defeat as we lost at the reigning champions. Ruslan Rotan and Adam Cristman grbbed the goals that put us to the sword.

Chicago 6-2 Chivas USA

All out attack was the answer of the day in this game. An early own goal from Kwame Watson-Siriboe was added to by Andy Keogh. Jason Herrick got a goal back for the visitors before Keogh struck again. Dmitry Torbinskiy added a 4th while Omar Salgado struck for Chivas. Keogh then took over and completed his hat trick before adding his 4th and our 6th in the 93rd minute.

Philadelphia 2-3 Chicago

We made it 3 wins from 4 with our first road victory of the season in the city of brotherly love. There was not much love around for Ademar Rodriguez when he gifted us the lead by turning into his own net after half an hour. Henry Bassey equalised just before the interval but Andy Keogh quickly restored our lead in the 2nd period. Hugo Garcia again levelled but Keogh grabbed his 6th goal in 2 games as he struck the winner.

Chicago 2-2 San Jose

Our first draw of the season as both sides battled back for a share of the points. Cory Gibbs gave us the lead but that was cancelled out by strikes from Ed topia and Brad Ring. Raul Meraz goal made sure though we maintained our unbeaten home record.

Kansas 1-3 Chicago

2 late goals saw us grab all 3 points in the dying stages of this match. Jorge Velazquez had put the hosts in front before Aaron Hohlbein's own goal put the match level. Andy Keogh then headed us in front after 82 minutes and Loris Azzolina made sure with a goal in the final minute.

Review:

Great start to the season; if we can learn to defend better then we will be ok. Only conceeding less than 2 goals once all month isn't really good enough. Dmitry Torbinskiy and Andy Keogh look like they could be fantastic for us this season. Going forward we have no problems at all but will our score 1 more than you policy work in the long run.

2016 May Round Up

Seattle 2-2 Chicago

An injury time strike from Raul Meraz helped us grab a point from this game. Lugiani Gallardo put us in front before 2 goals in 3 minutes from Robbie Findley turned the game on its head. The drama was still to come though and sub Meraz's goal 2 minutes into injury time earned us a point.

Chicago 2-0 Philadelphia

We recorded a rare clean sheet as we completed our league double over Philadelphia. Andy Keogh and sub J.C Banks goals were enough to give us all 3 points.

D.C United 1-5 Chicago

An outstanding display in the capital saw us run out comfortable winners. Dasan Robinson put us in front with a header before a Lugiani Gallardo free kick doubled our advantage. Dmitry Torbinskiy added a double either side of the break to put us firmly in control whilst D.C's lone goal came from Jeremy Hall. Winger Corey Ashe completed the victory with his late strike.

Chicago 5-0 Colorado

For the 2nd game in a row we ran out comfortable victors as we destroyed Colorado with a magnificent performance. Andy Keogh's brace but us 2 up at the break and Lugiani Gallardo added a 3rd shortly after. Keogh then turned on the style hitting 2 more giving him 4 goals in a game for the 2nd time this season.

Kansas 2-3 Chicago (U.S Cup 2nd Qualifying Round)

We made it to the 3rd qualifying round with an extra time victory over the Wizards. Bryan Dominguez goal put us in front and that lead lasted until the 54th minute when Nicolas Dieguez scored. Andy Keogh scored in the 1st minute of the extra 30 before Jed Tayner slotted in a 100th minute penalty. 3 minutes before the game went to penalties Jorge Luis Valenica popped up to grab the winner.

Equitorial Guinea 0-0 Mali (World Cup Qualifying 2nd Round)

Our World Cup qualifying campaign got off to a frustrating start with a dissapointing goalless draw in Guinea. Despite having the better of the game we were unable to break the deadlock and ended the match with 1 point each.

New England 0-2 Chicago

5 wins in a row now as we won on the road in New England. Loris Azzolina's penalty gave us the advantage just before the break and Andy Keogh added number 2 just after to seal our victory.

Review:

Fantastic month 5 wins and 1 draw including progress in the U.S cup. Dissapointing draw with Mali as my 100% record for them went but we are still odds on to win the group. We managed to keep 3 clean sheets this month to so maybe our defense is starting to get better.

2016 June Round Up

Salt Lake 3-2 Chicago (U.S Cup 3rd Qualifying Round)

We started the month in dissapointing fashion as we crashed out of the U.S Cup. After coming from 2 down thanks to goals from Dasan Robinson and Raul Meraz we conceded 4 minutes from time as Justin Meram scored. Ulises Davila and Leonardo Garcia had given them the lead before our fightback.

Mali 1-0 Zambia (World Cup Qualifying 2nd Round)

We avoided humiliation late on as Modibo Maiga scored in the 92nd minute to give us a crucial victory.

Chivas USA 1-1 Chicago

Isaac Rivera and Bryan Rodriguez traded goals as we left Chivas with a valuable point.

Mali 4-0 Rwanda (World Cip Qualifying 2nd Round)

Our Qualifyiong cmpaign finally kicked into life with a comfortable victory over Rwanda. The Maiga boys were our saviours as first Modibo scored and then Sekou hit a hat trick as we cruised to victory.

Mali 3-0 Equitorial Guinea (World Cup Qualifying 2nd Round)

A comfortable victory over Guinea saw us go top of our qualifying group and put ourselves in pole position to make it to the 3rd round. Modibo Maiga put us in front and Sambou Yatabare added a 2nd. The win was sealed when Bakary Soumare scored the 3rd.

Chicago 3-0 New York

2nd met 1st and we showed our dominance with a victory that saw us leapfrog the side from the big apple and jump to the top of the Eastern conference standings. Bryan Dominguez put us in front in just the 4th minute and Andy Keogh doubled that lead after 13. We wrapped up the victory 20 minutes from time with a goal from sub Corey Ashe.

Review:

Dissapointed to be knocked out of the U.S cup but otherwise it was a productive month. A point against Chivas is a decent result and beating New York so comfortably is a big confidence booster. For Mali it was a very good month; 3 games, 3 wins, 3 clean sheets and progress to the next stage looking very likely.

2016 July Round Up

Chicago 4-2 Dallas

Bryan Rodriguez and Lugiani Gallardo each grabbed 2 goals as we kept our place at the top of the Eastern Conference. Hilal Soudani and Assuerio grabbed the Texans goals.

Columbus 3-2 Chicago

An eventful 1st half saw us crash to our 2nd league defeat of the season. After going in front through Jun Marques Davidson the hosts took the lead with goals from Doug Barlow and Rodrigo Lopez. Andy Keogh equalised for us before Andre Akpan hit the winner.

Colorado 0-2 Chicago

We bounced back from defeat in perfect fashion as Corey Ashe and Lugiani Gallardo both scored to help us claim a valuable road win.

Chicago 3-2 D.C United

Defender Jorge Luis Valencia's headed double helped us overcome the side from the capital as we came from behind to win. Jesus Sanchez had put United in front before Valencia's double and a Lugiani Gallardo goal put us in control. Oscar Martinez got a late consolation for the visitors.

Review:

Good month; dissapointed to lose to Columbus but 3 wins from 4 games is a decent return if we can get that kind of run till the end of the season we will give ourselves a great chance of winning the supporters shield.

2016 August Round Up

Houston 3-3 Chicago

We should have ended this game with all 3 points; we were by far the better side but our defending was at times shambolic. Alvaro scored the opener for the hosts before Jorge Luis Valenica's 3rd goal in 2 games. Corey Ashe then put us in front only for Tristan Bowen to equalise. Raul Meraz goal 4 minutes from time should have been enough for the win but in the 91st minute Jason Valadez goal rescued a point for the hosts.

Chicago 2-2 Salt Lake

Again we failed to see out a game as Salt Lake equalised twice in injury time once in each half. Lugiani Gallardo hit the opener but that was cancelled out by Eric Avila in the 47th minute of the 1st half. Then a Moises Orozco own goal looked to have given us all 3 points until Zach Shilawski's 91st minute heartbreaker.

New York 3-2 Chicago

Despite coming from 2 down we failed to get anything against fellow title contenders New York as we were sunk by yet another late goal. The hosts had Sergio Figueroa and Ed Tapia to thank for their early advantage and despite Lugiani Gallardo and a Peter Bevan own goal getting us back level Clyde Simms 89th minute penalty put the side from the Big apple top.

Chicago 3-1 New England

After 3 games without a win we finally tasted 3 points again by defeating New England. Andy Keogh's brace put us in control and though Bobby Stallard got 1 back we never looked in to much trouble and Bryan Dominguez wrapped up the victory.

Review:

Awful month we should have got 10 points from the 4 games this month instead we have 5 thanks to late goals and poor defending. With New York's form at the moment we really can't afford to many more slip ups if we want to finish ahead of them.

2016 September Round Up

Zambia 1-2 Mali (World Cup Qualifying 2nd Round)

We booked our place in the 3rd round of World Cup qualifying with a victory on the road in Zambia. Jacob Mulenga gave the Zambians the lead before we struck back through Bakary Sangare Morike Kalle goals.

Chicago 4-2 Seattle

MLS action resumed with a comfortable victory over Seattle. Andy Keogh, Loris Azzolina and Corey Ashe all scored in the first half hour to leave us in complete control. Kei Kamara then got 1 back before Ashe scored his 2nd. Kamara then got a 92nd minute consolation for his side.

Chicago 2-1 Columbus

We avenged our defeat at Columbus earlier in the season thanks to an Andy Keogh double. That cancelled out Andre Akpan's early penalty for the visitors.

Dallas 5-4 Chicago

I do wonder how good we could be if we could defend. Pedrinho's 5th minute own goal put the hosts in front for less than a minute as Andy Keogh quickly equalised. John Bailey and Andrew Bonilla then bopth scored to put the hosts 3-1 up. 2 goals in 2 minutes just before the break from Keogh saw him complete his hat trick and send us in level. Matt Hitchen again put the hosts in front before Keogh scored his 4th of the game. Cesar Sanchez though had the final word as he tucked the ball home in the 92nd minute.

Review:

2 wins 1 defeat in the league isn't really good enough; we need more if we are to catch New York. On the plus side we have pretty much confirmed our playoff spot and from a Mali perspective we are in round 3 with still 1 game to spare.

2016 October Round Up

Chicago 4-0 Los Angeles

We wrapped up our spot in the playoffs in spectacular fashion beating the current champions easily. Corey Ashe hit a double whilst Lugiani Gallardo and Andy Keogh also got themselves on the scoresheet.

Chicago 3-3 Houston

Our supporters shield hopes took another blow as Hector Ruiz struck 4 minutes from time to salvage a draw for the visitors. Loris Azzolina had twice put us in front already but those goals had both been cancelled out by 2 from Ken Ilso. Ryan Pore then put us in front for a 3rd time but again we couldn't hold on.

Rwanda 0-3 Mali (World Cup Qualifying 2nd Round)

We completed our 2nd round qualifying campaign with a comfortable victory in Rwanda. Gerra Dembele was the star of the show hitting a hat trick. In the 3rd round we will face Algeria, DR Congo and Gambia with the top side progressing to the 2018 World Cup.

Final 2nd Round Table

Salt Lake 2-1 Chicago

Salt Lake pretty much ended our supporters shield hopes with this victory. An Andy Keogh own goal and a strike from Moises Orozco put them in control before Loris Azzolina got 1 back late on.

Toronto 3-5 Chicago

The dream was just about kept alive thanks to a goal fest in Canada. Cristiano scored the opener after 20 minutes; that lead though lasted just 6 minutes as Jorge Luis Valencia nodded us level. Corey Ashe then put us in front before Adrian Kawalit equalised. Valenica then grabbed his 2nd but so did Kawalit. Andy Keogh scored after 72 minutes to put us back in front and 8 minutes later he completed the victory.

San Jose 1-0 Chicago

Our hopes of the supporters shield were finally killed off thanks to Balint Bajner's goal.

Chicago 2-0 Kansas

We finished the regular season off with victory as Jorge Luis Valencia and Andy Keogh grabbed the goals to send us into the playoffs with a win.

Review:

Not a great month but we at least maintained 2nd place and go into the playoffs with some degree of form.

2016 Eastern Conference Playoffs Round Up

D.C United 1-2 Chicago (Semi Final 1st Leg)

A crucial away win in the 1st Leg set us up perfectly for the 2nd leg. Lugiani Gallardo and Andy Keogh's goals were seperated by Gerardo Ortiz's strike.

Chicago 2-2 (4-3 on aggregate) D.C United (Semi Final 2nd Leg)

We booked our place in the final against New York with a solid draw at home. Renato put the visitors in front on the night after 17 minutes only for Bryan Dominguez to level. Raul Meraz then sealed the win as he put us 4-2 up on aggregate with just 13 minutes remaining. Jon Clark got 1 back in the 89th but we saw out the game to progress.

New York 2-3 Chicago (Final)

A fantastic victory over the supporters shield champions New York saw us progress to the MLS final where we will now take on Seattle. Eduardo Sallers put the Red Bulls in front before Jorge Luis Valencia equalised. Lugiani Gallardo then put us in front before Peter Bevan levelled on the hour mark. With the game looking to be heading towards a stalemate after 90 minutes Valencia nodded home the winner just a minute from time to seal our place in the final.

Mali 0-0 Peru (International Friendly)

Before the MLS final I had a midweek international friendly to manage. All in all this was a pretty quiet game as we concluded our build up to the African Cup of Nations. In the group stage of the tournament we will face Burkina Faso, DR Congo and Ghana.

2016 MLS Final & Season Round Up

Seattle 2-3 Chicago

We clinched victory in the MLS Final thanks to a late goal from player of the season Andy Keogh.

Review of Season:

MLS Regualr Season - Making the playoffs were the aim and we comfortably managed that. If it hadn't of been for New York's great season we would have won the supporters shield.

MLS Playoffs - Great victory over New York was really the final; the 2 best sides going head to head. Once we had won that game I was confident we would beat Seattle.

U.S Cup - Dissapointed to be knocked out in the 3rd qualifying round but we had 2 difficult ties to try and get through and fell at the 2nd hurdle.

WC Qualifying - Really happy to have made it into the 3rd round as we were expected to. Now the hard work really starts beginning with the African Cup of Nations where i'm expected to reach the semi finals

2017 African Cup of Nations Round Up

Mali 4-2 Ghana

On paper this was our toughest game and we came out of it with 3 massive points. Tongo Doumbia and Modibo Maiga put us 2 up before Kevin Prince Boateng and Asamoah Gyan scored to level things up. Adama Toure and Sambou Yatabare both then scored to restore our 2 goal advantage and give us the win.

Mali 2-0 Burkina Faso

A pretty straightforward victory for us leaves us with 2 wins from 2 and only needing a point from our remaining game. Sekou Maiga gave us the lead before Sambou Yatabare sealed the win in injury time.

Mali 6-0 DR Congo

With Congo having had 6 put past them in their previous game against Ghana we followed suit. Tongo Doumbia, Chieck Fantamady Diarra, Sambou Yatabare and Drissa Diakite all scored before the break. There was also a Simon Roger Yenga own goal that left us 5 up and cruising. In the 2nd half we were only able to add 1 more goal through Sekou Maiga.

Group Table

Mali 2-0 Cameroon (Quarter Final)

We completed our pre tournament objective with victory over Cameroon. 2 goals in the final 10 minutes from sub Bakary Soumare and an own goal from Guy Roland Ndy Assembe booked our place in the semis.

Mali 4-1 Guinea

Guinea were demolished as we booked our place in the final and looked to try and win the competition we won for the 1st and only time back in 2013. 2 goals from Sambou Yatabare put us in control and further goals from Chieck Fantamady Diarra and Idrissa Coulibaly sealed the win. By the time Sekouba Soumah scored in the 92nd minute the tie was well and truly over.

Mali 2-0 Senegal

We wrapped up the 2nd African Cup of Nations victory in Mali's history with a 2 goal victory thanks to goals from player of the tournament Sambou Yatabare.

2017 Pan-Pacific Championship Round Up

Chicago 3-1 Tianjin(Semi Final)

After winning the MLS Final last year we took part in the Pan-Pacific Championship a month before the start of the season. We got off to a nightmare start when Danda Magane scored in the very first minute of the game. Anything the Chinese side could do though we could do better and just 14 seconds into the 2nd half Andy Keogh levelled. From there we took control of the game and Loris Azzolina and then one of our debutants Davy Arnaud scored to help us progress to the final where we will take on Pohang of South Korea.

Chicago 3-2 Pohang(Final)

2 late goals in 5 minutes saw us win the Pan-Pacific Championship in dramatic fashion. Thiago Birica had given the hosts the lead before Justin Mapp's first goal for us levelled. Toninho's penalty for a while looked as if it might be enough but then Corey Ashe and Lugiani Gallardo struck to give me my 2nd trophy as Fire Boss.

2017panfinal.png

DR Congo 1-1 Mali (World Cup Qualifying 3rd Round)

The 3rd round of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup also got underway before the start of the season. We travelled to DR Congo to take on the side just 2 months earlier we had destroyed 6-0 in the African Cup of Nations. Sekou Maiga gave us the lead and we created enough chances to score 6 again but we were eventually punished for missing so many. Chris Makiese grabbed the equaliser 5 minutes from time and we started the 3rd round with a point each.

2017 Season Preview & March/April Round Up

MLS -

Media Prediction:1st

Board Expectation: Reach MLS Final

U.S Cup -

Board Expectation: Don't consider competition important

2017 Squad

The squad this year is much stronger we have managed to get in some depth. Players like Justin Mapp and Davy Arnaud will really help us. Meanwhile we have managed to keep the spine of our team Kenneth Rivera, Jorge Luis Valencia, Loris Azzolina, Lugiani Gallardo and goal scoring machine Andy Keogh. After pushing New York so close last season I would love to win the supporters shield this year along with the MLS Final. Actually making some progress in the U.S cup would also be good and it will be interesting to see how we compete in the NACL.

Chicago 2-0 Toronto

We kicked off the season at home to the team from north of the border. Last season's top scorers Andy Keogh and Lugiani Gallardo grabbed the goals to give us 3 points.

Los Angeles 2-3 Chicago

2 goals in the final 11 minutes saw us defeat the current U.S cup winners in our first road game of the season. Jeremy Freeman put the hosts in front only for J.C Banks to level. Matt Hitchen again put LA in the lead before the late goals from Andy Keogh and then Lugiani Gallardo.

Chicago 2-1 Chivas USA

Andy Keogh and Lugiani Gallardo both made it 3 in 3 games as they cancelled out David Bonilla's opener.

Philadelphia 1-4 Chicago

We made it 4 wins from 4 with our most convincing victory of the season so far. Lugiani Gallardo opened the scoring before Lucas Pugh levelled. Justin Mapp put us back in front 3 minutes into the 2nd half and then Andy Keogh grabbed a brace to make it 5 in 4 for last season's MVP.

Chicago 1-1 San Jose

Lugiani Gallardo continued his run of scoring in every match by bagging the opener in this game. Our 100% record though was ended 8 minutes from time when Aaron Wright scored.

Review:

Really good start to the season; should have been 5 from 5 really and but for a late San Jose goal it would have been. Can't complain with 13 points from the month though. Andy Keogh and lugiani Gallardo have started exactly where they finished last season in great form and it looks as if they will be our 2 key players again. In Mali news the African Cup of Nations qualifying groups have been drawn and we are alongside Botswana, Lesotho and Zambia.

2017 May Round Up

Kansas 0-1 Chicago

We got back to winning ways in Kansas with a 1 goal victory thanks to an Andy Keogh 57th minute header.

Seattle 3-1 Chicago

Our first defeat of the season as Seattle got a measure of revenge for the MLS Final defeat last season. Alecko Eskandarian put the Sounders in front after 20 minutes and Knowledge Musona doubled that advantage 11 minutes later. Ugo Ihemelu added a 3rd before Kevin wilcox late consolation.

Chicago 2-1 Philadelphia

We completed our first league double of the season as we saw off Philadelphia. Loris Azzolina gave us the lead with a penalty and andy Keogh scored the 2nd after 42 minutes. Chris Baker got 1 back after 55 but we grabbed all 3 points.

D.C United 1-4 Chicago

A comfortable victory in the capital saw us extend our lead at the top of the Eastern Conference. Justin Mapp scored the opening goal and although D.C levelled through Jay Needham's own goal we were always the better side. Loris Azzolina put us back in the lead just after the break and we quickly extended our advantage to 2 goals thanks to Corey ashe's goal. Lugiani Gallardo grabbed the 4th 3 minutes from time to equal our biggest win of the season so far.

Chicago 4-3 Colorado

In truth the scoreline in this game should have been far more comfortable. Jeff Payne and Justin Mapp put us 2 up at the break and in control. Keith Savage got 1 back but 2 goals in 8 minutes from Loris Azzolina and a 2nd from Mapp looked to have wrapped up the game. Carlos Gonzalez scored a penalty to give the visitors hope and when Ronaille Calheira scored 6 minutes from time we were set for a nervy finish. We held on though and got 3 deserved points.

Review:

12 points from 5 games continued our impressive start to the season. A third of the way through the campaign now and we are exactly where we should be. Next month we only have 2 league games both on the road whilst I have a crucial World Cup qualifying game at home to Algeria.

2017 June Round Up

Mali 2-0 Algeria (World Cup Qualifying 3rd Round)

A crucial qualifier as we look to book our place at the 2018 World Cup ended in our favour. 2 goals in the opening 18 minutes settled the tie as Modibo Maiga and Morike Kalle grabbed the crucial scores that gave us the victory.

Djibouti 0-5 Mali (International Friendly)

Our mixture of first teamers and squad players took apart Djibouti with ease. Sekou Maiga gave us the lead in the 1st minute before record goalscorer Modibo Maiga doubled the advantage. Sambou Yatabare grabbed the 3rd before the break and centre back Mohamed Mamadou playing just his 2nd international game scored his first goal just after the break. Modibo Maiga grabbed the 5th mid way through the 2nd half.

Chivas USA 1-4 Chicago

Andy Keogh's superb hat trick combined with a 25 yard strike by Loris Azzolina gave us a comfortable victory over Chivas. The hosts late consolation was very fortunate as a shot rebounded off the post and hit keeper Kenneth Rivera in the back before bouncing in.

New England 1-5 Chicago

Our 2nd demolition in a row as we crushed New England. Centre Back Jay Needham scored twice in the first half to put us in control of the match. Loris Azzolina scored the 3rd after 72 minutes although our 3 goal advantage lasted just 4 minutes before Dave Myers strike. Sub Raul Meraz added the 4th in the 88th minute before Lewis Russell's injury time own goal finished the scoring.

Minnesota 2-5 Chicago (U.S Cup 3rd Round)

A late goal bonanza gave us a rather flattering scoreline over Minnesota. Having gone 2 up early thanks to goals from Lugiani Gallardo and Jeff Payne we manged to blow the lead with Brian Cvilikas and Edmilson scoring for the hosts. Corey Ashe put us back in front 2 minutes from time and with Minnesota chucking men forward we caught them on the break and Andy Keogh was able to grab a 91st minute 4th. Ashe completed the scoring 2 minutes later and gave us a flattering win.

Review:

Great month for Chicago & Mali. The win over Algeria was crucial and means if we get the results we should get a point to them away from home should be enough. In the MLS 2 great wins over Chivas & New England gave us 6 valuable points and a victory over Minnesota in the cup sees us progress. Unfortunately the quarter final draw has been less than kind and we will travel to Seattle in the next round.

2017 July Round Up

Chicago 2-0 New York

This was an important victory over the team in 3rd in the Eastern Conference and last years supporters shield winners. We did however leave it very late as Jay Needham headed home the opener after 87 minutes before Andy Keogh got the 2nd in the 6th minute of added on time.

Seattle 1-1 (4-2 on penalties) Chicago (U.S Cup Quarter Final)

We crashed out of the U.S Cup on penalties in Seattle. After a goalless 90 minutes Kaio scored 3 minutes into extra time to put the hosts in front before Jay Needham's 108th minute leveller. Unfortunately 2 missed spot kicks saw us dumped out of the cup.

Chicago 1-1 Dallas

After playing 120 minutes just a few days earlier our tired team put in a disjointed effort against Dallas. Junior Burgos opening goal put the Texans in friont before fullback Joaquin Canals grabbed an equaliser for us.

Colorado 4-0 Chicago

Before this game we signed free agent goalkeeper Victor Valdes and we traded for young American left winger Francisco Javier Hernandez. Both were chucked straight into the starting line up and along with the rest of our team we put in a dismal effort. Wout Van Ommeren grabbed the opener 2 minutes into the 2nd period. Jesus Torres grabbed the 2nd after 75 before an Andrew Smith penalty and a 2nd from Van Ommeren completed the rout.

Review:

Poor month a good win over New York was the highlight. We didn't deserve to beat Seattle and were rightly knocked out of the cup; we were tired and played poorly against Dallas and probably deserved to lose. Then against Colorado we were abysmal; without question the worst performance since I got here it was an absoloute shocker. The Valdes and Hernandez signings although they didn't show it against Colorado i'm confident will be a big boost. Kenneth Rivera has potential but Valdes is a big upgrade right now and Hernandez is better than what we currently have and has a huge upside. Looking at the NACL those 2 give us a big boost; when we look at the Mexican sides in the competition there is no question we are now very able to compete with those teams.

2017 August Round Up

Chicago 2-1 D.C United

We returned to winning ways with a come from behind victory over D.C. Jesus Sanchez put the visitors in front before goals from Andy Keogh and Corey Ashe gave us the win.

Columbus 3-4 Chicago

An entertaining game in Columbus saw us grab a 2nd win in a row. Columbus found themselves 2 up thanks to Joe Corona and Julio Cesar Robledo's penalty. Scott Palguta grabbed 1 back before Angel Corona looked to have given the hosts the win. Matheo Boyer had other ideas though and 2 headers in 13 minutes saw us draw level. Corey Ashe then completed the comeback drilling home the winner from just inside the box.

Houston 3-2 Chicago

A brave effort saw us go down to defeat in Houston in a game that punished us in more way than 1. Alvaro's opener gave Houston the lead for just 3 minutes as Andy Keogh levelled. Matheo Boyer was then sent off and Hector Hernandez converted the resulting penalty. Our 10 men got back level again though through a Corey Ashe goal. With Joaquin Canals and Justin Mapp already forced off through injury and our other sub made at the time of the sending off Davy Arnaud went down injured and we were forced to play the last half an hour with just 9 men. Ultimately we couldn't hold out and Tristan Bowen slotted home the winner.

Chicago 2-1 Salt Lake

This was an important victory as we again responded to a defeat with victory. Andy Keogh and Corey Ashe put us firmly in control of this game. Tatu grabbed a consolation for Salt Lake but we took all 3 points.

New York 1-2 Chicago

Corey Ashe scored for the 5th game in a row to put us on the path to victory in the Big Apple. Matheo Boyer returned from suspension to fire home a spectacular 20 yard volley for the 2nd before Kei Kamara pulled 1 back for the hosts.

Review:

Not a bad month 4 wins 1 defeat; if we hadn't of had 3 injuries and a sending we may even have got something from the Houston game as well. We are now very handily placed though to wrap up the supporters shield 10 points clear of Seattle with just 10 games left and although they do have 1 game in hand we are now odds on favourites to wrap up the title.

2017 September Round Up

Chicago 3-2 New England

We started what is going to be a brutal run with 16 games over the next 2 months with victory over New England. Sanna Nyassi's double for the visitors was cancelled out twice first by Bryan Dominguez and then winger Corey Ashe who scored for the 6th game in a row. Sub J.C Banks grabbed the winner 5 minutes into added time to send the Fire fans home happy.

Lesotho 1-2 Mali (African Cup of Nations Qualifying)

We avoided an upset in Lesotho by coming from behind to win our opening Qualifying game for the 2019 African cup of nations. Lekhotla Molatoli had put the hosts in front after 10 minutes before Bakary Sangare levelled. Cheick Bougounta Cisse was our hero scoring his first international goal to give us the win.

Gambia 1-2 Mali (World Cup Qualifying 3rd Round)

The 2nd part of our 3 game international run was a World Cup qualifier and again we looked less than efficient in victory. Tongo Doumbia broke the deadlock after 72 minutes only for Momodou Ceesay to level 7 minutes later. Mali legend Modibo Maiga rescued us though by grabbing the winner in stopage time.

Mali 1-1 DR Congo(World Cup Qualifying 3rd Round)

You wouldn't believe this a team we beat 6-0 in the last Aftican cup of nations tournament on our way to lifting the trophy. Modibo Maiga put us in front after 4 minutes and you could be forgiven for thinking another rout was on the cards. The visitors though put up a fight and our inconsistent form continued as Bavon Tshibuabua grabbed the equaliser.

Chicago 2-0 Seattle

We increased our lead in the race for the supporters shield with victory over our nearest rivals. Andy Keogh's 4th minute goal was followed by Lugiani Gallardo's 24th minute strike as we grabbed a crucial victory.

Chicago 5-1 Victoria (NACL Group Stage)

We started our NACL campaign with a demolition of Honduran side Victoria. Bryan Dominguez scored in just the 5th minute but despite dominating we were unable to add to our lead. After 29 we were punished as Nahun Calderon scored with the visitors first shot of the match. In the 2nd half we took control though and 2 goals from Andy Keogh along with Loris Azzolina's strike and Jay Needham's header saw us run out comfortable victors. To complete our day our playoff place was sealed due to other results going our way.

Chicago 0-7 Columbus

With games coming thick and fast and as we had a big lead in the MLS we decided to make 9 changes for this game and rest our first team for the upcoming NACL clash in Toronto. That plan backfired spectacularly as we were humiliated in the worst display of my career so far. The writing was on the wall when Roberto Cerda scored just 3 minutes in. That was nothing though as he and Araruama then combined to rip us apart. Araruama scored the 2nd after 22 before Cerda got number 3 2 minutes later. 2 minutes after that and Araruama had made it 4 and in the 29th minute Cerda completed his hat trick. 5-0 down inside half an hour and 4 goals scored in just 7 minutes. Fortunately Columbus took their foot off the pedal after that and only Joe Corona nd Julio Cesar Robledo were able to add to the scoreline.

Toronto 0-6 Chicago (NACL Group Stage)

After being humiliated by Columbus we again made changes knowing we had to win to make sure that at least we got some reward for resting our first team. What happened was more than I could have dreamed of as we demolished the Canadians. Andy Keogh struck 4 times whilst there were also goals for Jeff payne and Francisco Javier Hernandez.

Dallas 2-4 Chicago

After 9 changes against Columbus we decided against that policy this time and took out just 2 players. The effect was clear for everyone to see as we put in an efficient performance on the way to victory. Andy Keogh's double along with Lugiani Gallardo's goal put us comfortably ahead at the break. Luke Sassano got 1 back before Jay Needham scored our 4th. John Bailey then scored for the hosts but there was to be no late game drama.

Review:

Overall not a bad month 9 points from 4 MLS games leaves us in a great position to finish the regular season as champions. The Columbus match will obviously not be forgotten but it was a blip and ultimately a defeat in that game should not cost us to much whilst a victory over Toronto was a big result for us. Monterrey the other side in our NACL group should be our toughest competion but we are looking good to at least get out of the group. With Mali it is looking more and more likely that qualification will come down to our game against Algeria which is now must not lose game.

2017 October Round Up

Chicago 4-2 Monterrey (NACL Group Stage)

This was the game I was most looking forward to in this group as soon as I saw the fixtures. A battle with the Mexicans; how could we match up. As it turns out pretty well; this result should give us a big boost of confidence and prove that we have a chance in this competition. Alfonso Silva's 7th minute goal was an ominous start however Lugiani Gallardo gave us hope after 15. Jay Needham then headed us in front before Loris Azzolina struck the 3rd. Jesus Rodrigo Garcia made things nervy when he got 1 back but sub Luciano Nunez eased those nerves by getting us a 4th goal and making it 3 wins from 3 in the competition so far.

Chicago 2-3 Los Angeles

This was us showing that tiredness was starting to take effect. 2 up through Lugiani Gallardo and Ricardo Lopez's own goal we looked in control. The Galaxy had other plans though and goals from Bryan Jordan, Tadeu and Matt Hitchen turned the game on its head.

Chicago 2-1 Houston

We responded perfectly to defeat by despatching Houston. Kevin wilcox and Corey Ashe grabbed goals either side of the break and Eric Brunner's 93rd minute consolation never put the tie in doubt.

Mali 4-0 Botswana (African Cup of Nations Qualifying)

A great preparation for the crucial game in Algeria as we cruised to victory in an African cup of nations qualifier. Adama Toure scored after 2 minutes before Bakary Sangare slotted home a penalty. Sekou Maiga then grabbed a 3rd before the break and added his 2nd and our 4th 2 minutes into the 2nd period.

Algeria 2-1 Mali (World Cup Qualifying 3rd Round)

We went into this game 1 point clear of Algeria with 2 games to play. It was a must not lose game. Unfortuantely we did lose. Youcef Ghazali put the hosts in front before Soungalo Youlcouye equalised. Then came the moment we had feared as Bakary Sangare deflected a cross into our net and gave Algeria a crucial victory.

Mali 2-0 Gambia (World Cup Qualifying 3rd Round)

We went into this game knowing we had to win and that if we did then Algeria would have to win away to DR Congo. After 26 minutes we were doing our part as Modibo Maiga grabbed the opener 13 minutes later and there was delight around the stadium as news came in Algeria were a goal down. We had to keep pushing though 1 goal from Gambia and it wouldn't matter what Algeria did. We kept looking for the 2nd and on 44 minutes it came as Sekou Maiga smashed home a loose ball. From there on our result was safe and all we could do was cheer on DR Congo. They held on and we celebrated the champions of Africa would be heading to the 2018 World Cup

MALI QUALIFY FOR 2018 WORLD CUP

3rd Round Qualifying Table

San Jose 2-3 Chicago

After my international break I returned to Chicago and MLS action. We started where we had left off with late drama and a victory. Francisco Javier Hernandez put us in front before goals from Balint Bajner and Danny O'Rourke turned the game around. Luciano Nunez and Lugiani Gallardo though but scored in the final 5 minutes to steal us a victory that wins us the MLS Supporters shield my first league triumph.

CHICAGO WIN MLS SUPPORTERS SHIELD

Salt Lake 1-0 Chicago

Just 24 hours after beating San Jose we took on Salt Lake and our tiredness showed as we went down to a 1 goal defeat thanks to Carlos Gonzalez

Chicago 2-0 Kansas

We returned home to take on Kansas in our final regular season home game and goals from Andy Keogh and Francisco Javier Hernandez proved to be more than enough to send our fans home happy as we paraded the supporters shield.

Toronto 1-2 Chicago

Our final regular season game ended on a high as we beat Toronto. Bryan Dominguez scored the opener and although David Barral equalised Toronto were level for just 2 minutes before Corey Ashe slotted home the winner.

Victoria 2-4 Chicago (NACL Group Stage)

With the regular season wrapped up we returned to NACL action and flew to Honduras where we maintained our 100% record in the competition. Andy Keogh and Kevin Wilcox put us in front before a brace from Luis Solorzano got the Hondurans level. Wilcox and Keogh then both struck again as we booked our place in the NACL Quarter Finals.

Monterrey 3-3 Chicago (NACL Group Stage)

We went into this game knowing a point would see us win the group. However we also knew this would likely be our toughest game and so it proved. Jay Needham's opener was cancelled out inside 60 seconds by Juan Carlos Huerta. Maxi Lopez then put the Mexicans in front before Demba added a 3rd. We maintained our unbeaten record though thanks to an Andy Keogh goal and a 2nd header from Needham.

Chicago 3-1 Toronto (NACL Group Stage)

We completed the NACL group stage with victory over Toronto. Francisco Javier Herandez scored the opener before David Barral equalised. Andy Keogh then took over and grabbed a brace to see us run out comfortable winners.

NACL Group Stage

Review:

Ultimately a very good month. We wrapped up the supporters shield and will now face Salt Lake in the Eastern conference semi finals. 5 wins and a draw from the NACL is more than I could have asked for and I think we have a genuine chance of lifting that trophy now. Ignoring the Columbus result I think we showed we have some decent depth in the squad our final 7 games were played in the space of 13 days and I was having to chop and change players every match. It was good news with Mali as well as we qualified for the World Cup with a little bit of help from DR Congo and have made a promising start to the African Cup of Nations Qualifiers.

2017 Playoffs Round Up

Salt Lake 1-1 Chicago (Eastern Conference Semi Final 1st Leg)

We got our playoff campaign underway with a draw against Salt Lake. Damon Scott put the hosts in front before Jay Needham's header ensured we head into the 2nd leg all square. New York beat D.C United 2-0 in the other match.

Chicago 2-0 (3-1 on aggregate) Salt Lake (Eastern Conference Semi Final 2nd Leg)

A comfortable victory saw us progress to the Eastern Final where we will face New York in a rematch from last season. They beat D.C United 2-0 on the night and 4-1 on aggregate. Andy Keogh slotted home the opener and Corey Ashe grabbed the killer 2nd to finish off the tie.

Chicago 2-2 (4-3 on penalties) New York (Eastern Conference Final)

We were expecting a close game and thats exactly what we got as the 2 best teams over the past 2 years went head to head. Winger Francisco Javier Hernandez gave us the perfect start before Eduardo Martinez levelled for the visitors. Tony Taylor then put the Red Bulls in front only for Jorge Luis Valencia to nod home 5 minutes later. Neither side was able to score again in the 90 minutes or the extra 30 and we headed to a penalty shoot out. 2 saves from Victor Valdes left Corey Ashe with the chance to win the match and he took his opportunity firing us into the MLS Final. Colorado will meet us in the final as they overcame Seattle following their own penalty shootout.

Chicago 5-3 (aet) Colorado (MLS Final)

The MLS season ended with a classic as we took on Colorado in one of best MLS Finals ever. A man of the match performance from young winger Kevin Wilcox helped us overcome a Colorado side that would not give up.

2017 Season Review

MLS Regular Season:

Winning the supporters shield was one of my big aims this season having finished 2nd last year and that's exactly what we managed to do. We looked pretty comfortable throughout and i'm delighted we achieved our aim.

MLS Playoffs:

Having won the playoffs last season as the 2nd seed this year should have been easier. In truth it was actually harder; New York pushed us all the way and Colorado just wouldn't go away.

MLS Cup:

Dissapointed to only make the Quarter Finals; i've not done that well in any cup competitions so far so to have a run would have been nice.

NACL:

Morale boosting win and then draw with Monterrey really gave us hope of doing well in this competition. Finishing top of the group was a big boost for us and now in the Quarter finals we will take on Los Angeles and will go into the game as favourites. There is another all MLS tie as Seattle face New York while there are 2 all Mexican ties as Monterrey play Cruz Azul and Chivas take on America(Mex).

2017 Squad

Internationals:

Delighted to make the Worl Cup; we were expected to make it and although it was a bit nervy we got there in the end. In Russia we will be in the same group as Brazil, Turkey and the U.S.A. According to our world ranking of 11th we should finish 3rd in the group ahead of 18th placed Turkey but behind 6th placed Brazil and 5th ranked U.S.A.

2018 Season Preview

Media Prediction: 1st

Board Expectations: MLS Finalists & Q-Final of NACL

Our aim for the start of this season is to continue our progress in the NACL; win the MLS again and do better in the MLS Cup. Internationally if I can make it out of our World Cup group with Mali that would be good. Our pre season started badly as the board again refused to upgrade anything and they then sold one of our best players fullback Joaquin Canals for £675,000 to San Lorenzo by taking the decision out of my hands and accepting the bid. The idiots then moaned at me saying his departure was dissapointing; so is your lack of ambition mr chairman.

Ballena Shizuoka 0-2 Chicago (Pan-Pacific Championship Semi-Final)

Our first competitive game of 2018 saw us take on Japanese side Ballena Shizuoka in the Pan Pacific Championship. Lugiani Gallardo and Andy Keogh grabbed the goals as we progressed to the final and looked to defend our trophy.

F.C Seoul 0-1 Chicago (Pan-Pacific Championship Final)

We clinched our 2nd consecutive Pan-Pacific Championship with victory over F.C Seoul. The only goal of the game was scored by the unfortunate Im Jong Eun as he turned the ball into the back of his own net.

Chicago 2-0 Los Angeles (NACL Quarter Final 1st Leg)

We returned to NACL action with a victory over fellow MLS side Los Angeles. Francisco Javier Hernandez stroked home the opener before Lugiani Gallardo gave us breathing room ahead of the 2nd leg in California.

Los Angeles 2-0 (2-2 on aggregate 2-4 on penalties) Chicago (NACL Quarter Final 2nd Leg)

Victor Valdes was the hero as he saved 2 LA penalties to give us victory after we had blown our 2 goal lead. When right back Sena was dismissed after 22 minutes we were always going to be up against it. We held out until the 54th minute when Olexandr Aliev put the hosts a goal up on the night. It looked as if we had seen off the danger but Tadeu finally grabbed an equaliser in the 91st minute. We held on throughout extra time and then Valdes turned hero with 2 big saves. In the semis we will face Seattle who overcame New York whilst Chivas take on Monterrey in an all Mexican clash.

Mali 2-1 Guinea (International Friendly)

Our first Mali game of the year saw us get a victory over Guinea. Lafina Toure put the visitors in front before Modibo Maiga and Sidy Tirera grabbed goals to give us the win.

Seattle 1-3 Chicago (NACL Semi Final 1st Leg)

A fantastic display in Seattle saw us move to within touching distance of the NACL Final. Jay Needham's early header put us in front only for Kaio to level 12 minutes later. In the 2nd half though we turned on the style as first Francisco Javier Hernandez and then Loris Azzolina scored to give us a 2 goal advantage heading back to Chicago.

Chicago 1-1 (4-2 on aggregate) Seattle (NACL Semi Final 2nd Leg)

We booked our place in the NACL final with a score draw at home to Seattle. Raul Meraz returned to Chicago to score the opener just before the break. With Seattle needing another 2 goals to win though we always looked comfortable and 5 minutes from time Kevin Wilcox earned us a draw on the night as he lashed home. In the final we will take on Chivas who overcame Monterrey.

Review:

Progress to the NACL final before our season has even really started is a great achievement even if we did only have to overcome 2 fellow MLS sides. Winning silverwear is always nice and so however pointless a trophy the Pan-Pacific Championship might seem it was good to get our hands on it and defend our title.

2018 March to May Round Up

Chicago 2-1 New England

The 2018 season kicked off to life with us grabbing a victory over New England. Jerome Hughes put us in front before Steven Beitashour levelled. Lugiani Gallardo's 60th minute effort though made sure we started the season with a win.

Mali 4-1 Zambia (African Cup of Nations Qualifying)

Just 24 hours after the MLS season kicked off I was in Mali to witness us demolish Zambia and move to the top of our qualifying group with 3 wins from 3. Soungalo Yalcouye was the star as the midfielder grabbed a stunning hat trick. Modibo Maiga grabbed our other goal whilst Emmanuel Mayuka scored a consolation for the visitors.

Chicago 1-0 New York

Andy Keogh returned from injury after 6 weeks out and scored the only goal as we made it 2 from 2 to start the season.

Houston 1-3 Chicago

Without question one of the best performances of my Chicago reign. A fabulous opening goal from Pedrinho put us in front before he was then sent off for a late lunge on 22 minutes. Despite being down to 10 men we got a penalty when Andy Keogh was fouled in the box and Loris Azzolina stepped up to convert. Alvaro got 1 back for Houston early in the 2nd half and then after 61 minutes we found ourselves down to 9 men when Jorge Luis Valencia picked up his 2nd booking of the game. The 9 men battled valiantly and with Houston pushing forward we caught them on the break 2 minutes from time and Francisco Javier Hernandez wrapped up the points.

Chicago 0-0 Los Angeles

After the drama of the Houston game this was very much an anti climax with neither side ever really looking likely to break the deadlock.

Chivas 1-1 Chicago (NACL Final 1st Leg)

we earned a creditable draw in Mexico with a solid performance. Andy Keogh's 29th minute opener put us in front and we would have grabbed a vital win had it not been for Gabriel Hernandez 74th minute equaliser.

Philadelphia 1-2 Chicago

We maintained our unbeaten start to the MLS season with victory in Philadelphia. Andy Keogh and Loris Azzolina put us 2 up inside 27 minutes and from there we were crusing. Ali Bouabdellah did get 1 back for the hosts but we were never in any real danger of not winning.

Chicago 3-1 aet (4-2 on aggregate) Chivas (NACL Final 2nd Leg)

We lifted our first ever NACL trophy with victory over Chivas. Francisco Javier Hernandez put us in front after 10 minutes only for Arnulfo Gonzalez to level after 67 minutes and take the match into extra time. Andy Keogh put us back in front after 103 minutes and then 3 minutes from the end Hernandez slotted home the goal that killed off the tie.

New England 2-4 Chicago

4 goals in 34 minutes helped us to victory in New England. Dave Myers had put the hosts in front after just 3 minutes before our blistering goal scoring spree either side of the break. 2 from Andy Keogh and goals from Francisco Javier Hernandez and Bryan Dominguez saw us seal the win. Brent Fisher struck 2 minutes from time for the hosts to restore some pride.

Chicago 3-1 Columbus

We made it 4 wins in a row thanks to an Andy Keogh hat trick against the Crew. Evan Brown got the visitors solitary goal.

Chicago 0-0 Kansas

Our win streak came to an end as we wrapped up the month with a rather ordinary draw against Kansas.

Review:

Great start to the season; unbeaten so far and a fantastic NACL triumph as we become only the 2nd MLS side to ever win the competition. Folowing on from the NACL win though I am now starting to ponder my future; my contract is up at the end of the season and apart from the U.S Cup I don't have anything else left to win here now. The board's obvious lack of ambition is also not helping; refusing to improve any facilities and selling my best players from under me means we are going to struggle to get much bigger or better.

2018 June Round Up

San Jose 4-3 Chicago

Our unbeaten start in the MLS came crashing to an end in San Jose. Having twice come from behind we felt we had grabbed a point until Servando Carrasco scored his 89th minute winner. San Jose had raced out to an early 2 goal lead through Cesar Sanchez and Vladyslav Smishko. Francisco Javier Hernandez got 1 bcak for us before Andy Keogh levelled. Carrasco then scored his first goal of the game before Keogh grabbed his 2nd to level again. Carrasco then struck the fatal blow with his late strike.

Mali 3-0 Lesotho (African Cup of Nations Qualifying)

We made it 4 from 4 in qualifying with a comfortable win over Lesotho. A brace from Sekou Maiga and a 1st ever international goal for Ahmed Soukouna wrapped up the victory.

Mali 3-1 Ecuador (International Friendly)

We completed our World Cup preperation with a come from behind victory over Ecuador. Antonio Valenica put the visitors in front beforeSekou Maig equalised. Maiga then added his 2nd before an own goal from Miguel Chavez completed the win.

Chivas USA 0-2 Chicago

My final road game before the World Cup ended in victory thanks to goals from Andy Keogh and Bryan Rodriguez.

Chicago 2-1 Seattle

Victory over Seattle completed our MLS fixtures before a World Cup break. Francisco Javier Hernandez and Bryan Dominguez scored to put us in control. Former Chicago striker Raul Meraz pulled back a goal for the visitors before I headed off to Russia.

2018 World Cup

Turkey 2-0 Mali

Our campaign got off to the worst possible start as we crashed to defeat against the only side ranked beneath us. Mevlut Erdnic and Necip Uysal grabbed the goals that ultimately sank us. In the other game in our group Brzail defeated the U.S 2-0.

Mali 2-0 U.S.A

An Idrissa Coulibaly double saw us get a crucial victory over the U.S. In the other match Brazil beat Turkey 2-0 to leave us needing to better Turkey's result in the final match.

Brazil 3-2 Mali

A brave 2nd half fight back almost saw us snatch a draw against Brazil but ultimately crash out of the World Cup. Knowing we had to get a better result than Turkey we started the game nervously. Neymar put the South Americans in front after just 15 minutes. 3 minutes later Paulo Henrique scored to make it 2-0 and 2 minutes after that Neymar scored again to leave us 3-0 down after just 20 minutes. To make things worse Turkey scored after 35 minutes to leave themselves a goal up at the break. 2 minutes into the 2nd half Modibo Maiga gave us hope with his strike from the edge of the box. After 61 minutes Turkey went 2 up and we knew we were heading home. Idrissa Coulibably grabbed his 3rd goal of the tournament to give us a chance of snatching a draw. In the end there was 1 more goal but it was a Turkish goal as they ran out comfortable 3-0 winners.

Following our failure to progress out of the group I decided to step down as Mali boss and focus only on club management for the time being.

Tampa Bay 0-3 Chicago (U.S Cup 3rd Round)

My first game back in America was in another cup and we comfortably saw off Tampa Bay to progress. 2 goals from Andy Keogh and a goal from winger Francisco Javier Hernandez were more than enough. In the quarter finals we will be at home against Northern Virgina giving me a great chance of making it to the Semis for the first time.

Chicago 1-1 Colorado

My first MLS game for a while was a dissapointing affair. Wout Van Ommeren gave the visitors the lead and they looked as if they would get all 3 points until the 88th minute when Corey ashe's goal got us out of jail.

Review:

The World Cup was the main talking point of the month and unfortunately we crashed out in the group stage. It was going to be tough and as soon as we lost to Turkey we were always going to be up against it. With Chicago we progressed to the quarters of the U.S cup and thanks to the draw we now have a fantastic chance of making it to the Semis. In the MLS we managed 7 points from 4 games not great but not a complete disaster either.

2018 July Round Up

Chicago 3-1 Northern Virgina (U.S Cup Quarter Final)

We made it through to the U.S Cup semis with a comfortable over Northern Virginia. Roy Ramirez put us in front after 3 minutes and we never looked back. Richard Murray added a 2nd from the penalty spot before Lyle Martin's own goal made it 3-0. Facundo De Leon did get 1 back for the visitors but we saw the game out to progress.

D.C United 1-2 Chicago

A late comeback saw us take all 3 points from our visit to the capital. Martin Monroy scored in the opening minute of the game to give D.C the lead and they held onto that until the 75th minute. Lugiani Gallardo curling home a 25 yard free kick to draw us level. Then with a draw looking likely Andy Keogh rose highest to nod in a 94th minute winner.

Chicago 1-0 Toronto

Matheo Boyer's headed goal was all we needed to claim victory in this match.

Kansas 0-1 Chicago

Our 2nd 1-0 victory in a row as Andy Keogh tucked home the only goal of the game.

2018 July/August Round Up

Following the Kansas victory I was linked with the vacant Flamengo job and given I have achieved pretty much everything in the MLS I decided to apply. After acouple of days I heard back and agreed terms on a 3 year deal worth £12,500 per week with Flamengo paying £95K compensation. The Flamengo job is a decent step up and although they have got off to a bad start this season it is only 3 seasons since they finished 2nd in the table. The past 2 years they have finished 8th and are predicted to finish 6th this year. It is clear to me right from the beginning though if I am to have success I will need to knock Santos off their perch. They have won the past 6 titles and also lifted 3 Copa Libertadores in that time. Looking at the squad it is very big and there is quite a lot of ordinary talent that needs shipping out. That will be one of my first aims as although the financial situation at the club is ok it could be much better with a vastly lower wage bill.

Brazilian 1st Division

Flamengo 3-1 Gremio

Just over a day after taking the job I was straight into action as we took on Gremio.Maikon Leite scored the 1st goal of my reign from the spot as we took the lead after 31 minutes. Rodrigo Rojas grabbed the 2nd before Fabricio pulled 1 back. Rojas then completed the victory 9 minutes from time.

Ceara 1-4 Flamengo

My first away game in charge couldn't have turned out any better as we blitzed Ceara. Diego Mauricio hit a hat trick and Renie also scored as we raced out into a 4 goal lead inside of the hour mark. Rodrigo Brasilia got a late goal back for the hosts but it was all to little to late.

Flamengo 3-0 Cortiba

Diego Mauricio grabbed his 2nd hat trick in 4 days as my dream start continued with a convincing victory over Cortiba.

Atletico Minero 1-4 Flamengo

4 wins from 4 now although this game had a big moment early on that significantly helped. Clayton was given a straight red card for the hosts after 12 minutes for a late lunge and we took full advantage of our extra man. Maico, Welinton and Bruno Paulo all scored before the break to put us in control. A Vitor penalty made it 4 before Wilson scored 6 minutes from time for the hosts.

Flamengo 5-0 Fluminese

Our astonishing run continued with a demolition of rivals Fluminese. Maicon grabbed the opener before an own goal from Diego Cavalieri made it 2 at the break. Edinho's own goal then made it 3 before Maikon Leite's penalty. Maicon completed the scoring by grabbing his 2nd and our 5th.

Ponte Preta 1-3 Flamengo

Another game another win. Renie put us in front before Adriano equalised. Jean Acosta put us back in front in first half injury time and Welinton then added the 3rd to complete the victory.

Flamengo 2-2 Sao Paulo

Our winning run came to an end with late drama at home to Sao Paulo. Renan Oliveira put the visitors in front jyst before the break. Diego Mauricio looked to have earnt us a point when he scored after 83 minutes. Guilherme though had other ideas and 2 minutes from time he put the visitors back in front. With us heading for defeat Andrezinho though rescued a point 2 minutes later.

Sport Recife 0-1 Flamengo

We got back to winning ways thanks to Maicon's 3rd minute first half injury time goal.

Flamengo 3-2 Corinthians

A cracker of a game against Corinthians saw us run out winners. Reanto Gaucho put the visitors 1 up at the break. Bruno Paulo levelled for us just into the 2nd period before a brace from Maikon Leite sandwiched an Adriano goal.

Review:

Couldn't turn down this job with the talent here; although there is also a lot of ordinary players. The potential is there to do big things. I couldn't have dreamed off a better start though and we have now flown up the table. Whether we can maintain it though will be the key to our season.

2018 September Round Up

Vitoria 1-0 Flamengo

The unbeaten run was going to come to an end at some point and it did against Vitoria as Bruno Meneghal grabbed the only goal.

Flamengo 1-1 Palmerias

We were saved our 2nd defeat in as many matches late on as Thiago Heleno's 88th minute own goal cancelled out Arthur's opener.

America (MG) 1-1 Flamengo

Another late goal this time 3 minutes from the end saw us snatch a point thanks to fernando. Yerien Esukusiede had put the visitors in front just 8 minutes earlier.

Ceara 0-3 Flamengo (Copa Sudamericana 2nd Preliminary Round 1st Leg)

A comprehensive victory saw us all but confirm our place in the next round. Diego Mauricio, Renie and Andrezinho all got themselves on the scoresheet as we grabbed victory.

Cruzeiro 2-2 Flamengo

Our battling qualities were again on display as we twice came from a goal down to earn a point. Wallyson scored the opener but that was quickly cancelled out by Jean Acosta. Dudu again put the hosts in front only for Ronaldinho to score an injury time leveller.

Flamengo 1-2 Santos

Unbeaten and top of the table Santos confirmed their status as Brazil's number 1 with a good win. Elkeson scored the opener and that lead was double by Adailton. Although Diego Mauricio did get 1 back Santos fully deserved their victory.

Flamengo 1-0 Guarani

A solitary goal from Diego Mauricio got us back to winning ways in this match.

Goias 0-0 Flamengo

Our recent habit of drawing continued with a dull goalless affair against Goias.

Botafogo 0-1 Flamengo

The ever reliable Diego Mauricio was again our saviour as he popped up to nab the winner in this match.

Review:

We were never likely to keep up our blistering form and this seems like more our kind of month. 10 points from 8 games is a bit of a dissapointment but if we could have turned a couple of our draws into victories then we would have had a much better showing. Our defence is a positive as we seem to be doing better at keeping opposing teams out now and the big victory over Ceara should see us progress in the Copa Sudamericana.

Does Andrezinho start the game at Sp. Covilha, if it's him he's a good striker, hope he does well for you :)

No this Andrezinho is a left winger but he is also pretty good; was already here on loan when I arrived but i'd like to sign him permanently if possible. My other good left winger Maikon Leite seems a bit injury prone.

2018 October Round Up

Flamengo 3-0 (6-0 on aggregate) Ceara (Copa Sudamericana 2nd Preliminary Round 2nd Leg)

A make shift side comfortably finished the job against Ceara as we booked our place in the last 16. Jean Acosta grabbed the opener before Diego Mauricio nodded in the 2nd. Welinton headed in the 3rd to give us a very comfortable passage to the next round.

Flamengo 2-1 Nautico

We came from behind to snatch all 3 points in this game against a poor Nautico side. Tonhao gave the visitors the lead before young striker Ronaldinho grabbed an equaliser. Heverton's own goal just past the hour mark turned out to be the winner.

Flamengo 1-1 Vasco

A late Dudu Cearense goal robbed us of 2 points as we slipped up at home to mid table Vasco. Hugo Leonardo had put us in front after 55 minutes before Cearense's goal 8 minutes from time.

Gremio 0-3 Flamengo

We got a big boost in our push for a Copa Libertadores spot as we crushed Gremio away from home. Diego Mauricio was the hero opening scoring after just 5 minutes and then getting 2 more goals in the 72nd and 76th minutes to wrap up the tie.

Fluminese 0-0 Flamengo (Copa Sudamericana 1st Round 1st Leg)

Our 1st round 1st leg clash with rivals Fluminese ended in a goalless draw as both teams tried not to lose.

Cortiba 1-4 Flamengo

2 big away wins in a row now thanks to another double from top scorer Diego Mauricio. 2 up inside 17 minutes Ciro got 1 back for the hosts just past the hour before 2 goals in the final 7 minutes from Diego Bairo and Renie sealed the win.

Flamengo 2-0 (2-0 on aggregate) Fluminese (Copa Sudamericana 1st Round 2nd Leg)

Diego Mauricio who else was again our saviour bagging both goals as we charged into the quarter finals of the Copa Sudamericana. We will now face fellow Brazilian side and the team we just beat 4-1 away from home Cortiba in the next round.

Flamengo 2-0 Atletico Minero

We returned to league action with a crucial victory over 1 of the sides chasing us at the top. Andrezinho crashed home the opener from the edge of the box before Diego Bairo powered home a header for number 2.

Cortiba 1-1 Flamengo (Copa Sudamericana Quarter Final 1st Leg)

A valuable away goal 4 minutes from time gave us a draw in the 1st leg against Cortiba. Marco Aurellio put the hosts in front after just 15 minutes and the scoreline stayed at 1-0 until Dakson's 86th minute strike.

Review:

An unbeaten month for us means we now have a decent chance of pushing on and at least finishing 5th which will get us into the Copa Libertadores. The win over Gremio was a particular highlight this month and our progress in the Copa Sudamericana is promising. That being said it is making sure I use all the players in the squad the good and ordinary as the constant run of weekend - midweek - weekend fixtures is taking its toll as we try and push on in 2 competitions.
