MVV First Team Stats - Mid 2005/06

The regular suspects are leading the way for MVV in their latest foray into the Ere Divisie, Ouichou and Leonardo continue to lead from the front since signing new deals and Nilsson just keeps scoring. Speculation continues to grow as to the future with Nilsson - if newspaper reports are to be believed he is very keen to sign permanently with the Maastricht club and it is only a matter of unearthing the funds. Further speculation also sees young striker Caraciollo returning to his Belgian homeland with a handful of parties believed to be interested - this would free up necessary finances to either cover MVV's obvious defensive frailties or to the speculated signing of Nilsson.

MVV Fixtures - January 2006

The new year's day fixture saw MVV go to the Amsterdam ArenA to take on the might of Ajax and to be honest it looked like most of the players had partied too hard in the bright lights the night before. Another bright start with Nilsson getting behind the Ajax defence and finishing on only 9 minutes but the match gradually swung back towards the talented Amsterdamers and on 33 minutes Anelka levelled things. The second half saw a rampant Ajax score three unanswered goals to kill off the MVV fight (which had fallen away considerably since half time.

Ajax 4-1 MVV

Antonio Calderon purposefully made his up the hill way towards Gaudi's bench at Park Guell. Why Boris chose this location - why he chose Barcelona was a mistery to the Spaniard but it was not really all that important, the fact that any professional club would want to speak with him was a surprise and it was not an opportunity he wanted to miss. You see the amicable Calderon had been embroiled in an unsavoury incident involving a certain high profile footballer in Madrid - no not that club the other one in Madrid - and subsequently he had not ventured into a football club since he was unceremoniosly axed in the summer of 2003.

Three men sat awkwardly on the bench in the sunshine. Boris' gaze didn't err as the other two argued passionately over who'd take the window seat back to Paris.

In an instant Calderon knew this was good for him. Boris talked money but to be honest he'd won over the Spaniard before he drew the money clip from his breast pocket. Two days in Barcelona before the four boarded their flight back to France, Boris hated Paris, he hated France and he hated most Frenchmen. But he wouldn't fly in to Holland or Belgium incase he roused suspicion. Today he was very quickly beginning to hate Florent. The usually calm Parisian had taken offence to Vangelis Jarasavvas' newly acquired role in the grand scheme of things. the Greek Vangelis and Boris had become particularly close in recent months, so much so that on a drunken night in Ios Boris managed to spill a few plans about the plans afoot in Maastricht. Hence the thirty nine year old self proclaimed 'professional' football coach (who'd never actually coached anyone as far as Florent had deduced) with a talent for understanding youngsters (honed after many many nights out in the Ios' party crowds) would be joining Calderon on the rapidly increasing cosmopolitan coaching staff at MVV.

MVV Player Movement - January 2006

It was clear to all that manager Benny Gomez had intentions of bringing in fresh blood during the transfer window the only question was where he would find the money. The sale of talented young Belgian striker Caracciolo answered the question. A quick striker, a couple of experienced european midfielders and some young talent from his homeland would do for now.

As mentioned Caracciolo had been sacrificed for a good amount of money, Martha on the other hand was never really goos enough at this level and a transfer back to the lower league was inevitable.

Gomez... We have made some welcome additions to the club during the transfer window. Unfortunately I had to let young Caracciolo go to fund our player movements but this is football, Caracciolo had shown glimpses of brilliance however I struggled to see his role enhancing under my guidance and his career will be better away from MVV. The young Colombians Vargas (22) and Abella (20) add a bit of depth and youthful exuberance - not to mention culture - to the football club, personally I needed to surround myself with some compatriots and these two have undoubted talent for their age. Andre Luiz (31) is a player I have admired and I am surprised to have signed him so cheaply from Ajaccio, he along with the tough Scotsman Thompson (34) will add needed depth to the midfield unit. The Cameroonian international Mamoum (26) is electric and should serve us well off the bench with his divine dribbling. Finally I have covered the loss of Wuytens (returning on loan to PSV) with the central defender Loovens from Feyenoord. The acquisition of coaches Calderon and Karasavvas are interesting - I have a feeling their wages are being well subsidised by a certain Ukrainian - but I am happy to welcome Calderon especially, once a very talented young coach and at only 38 he will be important to me.

MVV Fixtures - February 2006

Roda JC visited De Geusselt sitting seventh in the table but would leave disappointed after dropping points thanks to Nilsson's eighth strike of the season and a Leonardo penalty. For MVV Mamoum, Andre Luiz and Thompson all debuted contributing off the bench. Fellow promotee Volendam (currently fourteenth in the ere divisie - and surprising many) didn't look the side that had the better of MVV last season, going down with an insipid attack (not one shot on target) to Ouichou's first half strike. Leonardo managed to miss a second half penalty but it didn't make a difference. The trip to Herenveen was a tad tougher for MVV going down 2-1 Leonardo getting on the scoresheet but the newly acquired Malafeev was superb in goal for Herenveen. The month ended with a confident performance against NEC running out 3-1 victors - two first half goals from Park and a late Leonardo tap-in ensuring a good month of football was finished off well. Three wins and a loss had pushed MVV up to tenth position (16 points clear of the relegation zone - still well behind the euro places though) and the return to form of Park was crucial to these good results. The pressure from Mamoum has seen the young Korean starting to rediscover the form of last season.

MVV 2-1 Roda JC

MVV 1-0 Volendam

Herenveen 2-1 MVV

MVV 3-1 NEC

MVV Fixtures - March 2006

With a top half finish threatening for MVV the month started poorly away to RBC. To only claim a point after leading 2-0 on 15 minutes was disappointing, young Abella in goals made a couple of terrible blunders which cancelled out Leonardo and Kalou's strikes by half time. In the second half RBC took the lead 3-2 and with 7 minutes left MVV had blown their chances - step up the Moroccan Ouichou - a brilliant solo run and finish tied up the game and it ended 3-3. In an evenly fought contest in Breda NAC took the points in a tale of two penalties, Nilsson's spotkick was saved on 35 minutes and Pender's scored for NAC on 47 minutes. AZ were quickly becoming MVV's bogey team with another loss to the Alkmaar outfit, once more Nilsson gave MVV the early lead only for two strikes before half time to turn the tables. Wachter starred in goals for AZ and truly saved the three points single handedly. MVV lost more points to Willem II as March became a costly month of football, Kalou's goal on the stroke of half time gave the Maastricht side a deserved lead however it was hero turned villain when Kalou recieved his second yellow card and was subsequently sent off after 69 minutes. Instantly the match swung and Willem II equalised on 79 minutes and were unlucky not to win it but for some desperate defensive efforts by Proshin and Peppinck for MVV. At least MVV new they played TOP next and duly disposed of them with a Park strike on the hour. The sixth and final match of the month pitted MVV against PSV at De Geusselt and the team from Eindhoven were up through Sibon on 16 minutes, in going down MVV fought back bravely with Kalou (returming from suspension) the instigator. Deservedly on 61 minutes MVV equalised through Park and it must be said were unlucky not to get the three points at the final whistle. This certainly dented PSV's hopes of reclaiming their ere divisie title with Ajax going five points clear on top now.

RBC 3-3 MVV

NAC Breda 1-0 MVV

MVV 1-2 AZ

MVV 1-1 Willem II

TOP 0-1 MVV

MVV 1-1 PSV

Gomez... The rather large Ukrainian is starting so apply some pressure and i'm not sure if i'm up to it. Boris doesn't seem to understand that you just don't beat teams like Ajax and PSV with the second rate squad that I currently have at my disposal. Oh well time to play out the meaningless remainder of the season and focus on some new talent and a new attitude amongst the playing staff for next season. We need trophies and this club is not desperate enough. If only they could know what was at stake.

MVV Fixtures - April 2006

With survival off their minds and no chance of really striding up the table it was no surprise that MVV struggled through April. Consecutive scoreless losses to De Graafschap, FC Utrecht and FC Groningen illustrated some serious tactical weaknesses and despite the relative comfort of lower mid-table relegation was not out of the equation just yet. The month ended with FC Twente visiting De Geusselt and the home crowd soon had something to cheer about with Ouichou breaking the ice on 31 minutes (MVV's first goal in five and a half hours of Eredivisie action!) with a delightful finish. Early in the second half Park doubled the lead before Nilsson closed the scoring on 58 minutes for 3-0 and the relief was obvious. At the top of the Eredivisie Ajax had almost sealed their historic 30th league title three points up with a game in hand from Feyenoord and PSV a further point behind.

De Graafschap 2-0 MVV

MVV 0-1 FC Utrecht

FC Groningen 2-0 MVV

MVV Fixtures - May 2006

Feyenoord have just kept their title hopes alive holding off MVV 3-2 in Rotterdam, despite late goals from Leonardo and Park Feyenoord moved to within three points of the Ajax outfit. The nine man Roda JC fought back for a 1-1 draw with MVV in their final home match of the season despite losing Estoyaff red carded after just 22 minutes and going down 1-0 to Park's early second half strike. MVV should have sealed the result but Leonardo missed from the spot on the hour mark opening the door for Roda JC to equalise through Cisse with 8 minutes remaining, despite losing Kah red carded late they held on for a valuable point for the bottom placed side. A packed De Geusselt stadium saw MVV's final match of the season and the locals were in buoyant moods knowing that their side would be competing in the Ere divisie once more, the exciting encounter was scoreless coming into half time before MVV's Mamoum broke behind the defence and opened his account for the Maastricht club. As the whistle blew closing the season the crowd were already celebrating - MVV had finished 11th and were 14 points clear of the relagation zone which incidently was filled by RBC, TOP and Roda JC (automatically relegated). At the top Ajax had claimed the title finishing 6 points clear of Feyenoord and PSV and went on to claim the double defeating PSV 1-0 in the Amstel Cup final.

Feyenoord 3-2 MVV

Roda JC 1-1 MVV

MVV 1-0 Vitesse

MVV First Team Stats - 2005/06

Once again Moroccan midfielder Ouichou has claimed the MVV fan's player of the year with three goals and eight assists in the club's return to the Ere divisie. The leading goalscorer title was claimed by Lars Nilsson who also announce that he would finally be joining the club on a permanent basis next season after a fee had been agreed between MVV and Herenveen, Nilsson scored ten times and was well supported by Park and Leonardo. This season's most outstanding young talent went to Andriy Proshin who also claimed the 2006 Dutch Voetbal International Young Player of the Year Award after an excellent debut season. Finally Danny Wintjens was awarded the top team man award after a superb season between the sticks proving his worth by deposing highly regarded loan recruit Gomes early on in the season. Honourable mentions for outstanding performances this season go to Soloman Kalou who played like his life depended on it which is not always the case for loan players, Bryssinck at the back as usual his dependable self and the brave skipper Raphael Supusepa for another season where he's put the club ahead of his personal regard.

Gomez's life in Maastricht was becoming one of excess given his celebrity status amongst the less than demanding locals. In a town where success on the sporting field had never translated into off-field news the successes of Gomez were creating a stir. MVV had not barely survived relegation they had finished 11th, this sort of mediocrity was unheard of at this level and despite Gomez's personal demands that the club push the super clubs of the Ere divisie next season most of the town (board of directors included) were ecstatic that the club was still in the top league.

The sunny climes of the Cote d'Azur draw all kinds to the south of France and a Colombian coach from Maastricht and his French/Algerian friend from Greece were certainly not out of place. Florent had been living it up on Ios with the financial backing of Boris of course - another little jaunt down to Nice was welcomed only due to the company - Nice was not Ios in early July! The two sat late that night in the hotel bar and Florent began to unfurl Boris' next step in the plan it wasn't that he was bored of the current situation in Holland, in fact he had been waiting in anticipation on every match report and result - it was just another avenue of approach in the greater scheme.

"Jean Gallice! What does my French assistant manager at MVV have to do with Boris' plans for a free europe."

Gallice was the senior member of the coaching panel for the French national team under Raymond Domenech. The same Domenech who had just been stepped down from this position after France's appalling second round exit in the recent world cup at the hands of the USA on penalties. The same world cup which had been claimed by the almighty Dutch side against the USA in the final. With the retirement of Barthez, Thuram and Pires amongst others the FFF had decided it was time for a change - the new French national side would not include any player over 28 years of age in the build up to the next European Championships - this not only enforced the international retirement of veteran Patrick Vieira it also placed serious doubts on the futures of prolific strikers Henry and Trezeguet. Applications had been sought for the new role and Boris has applied - not personally of course - the application is of Florent De Sousa and Jean Gallice in a dual role. The mentor and the apprentice. The FFF would be seeking new faces without risk and this offers both options, the opposition of an Algerian Frenchman could be countered by Florent's ability to attract young dual nationals in France and that he must seek constant guidance of the experienced Gallice.

Maastricht Voetbal Vereniging (MVV)

Season 1 (04/05) - Eerste Divisie Champion (promotion to Ere Divisie)

Season 2 (05/06) - 11th Ere Divisie

Minor trophy won in season 1 therefore continuation to five years maximum is activated. Within the next 3 seasons I must complete one of the following or the challenge is failed before it's even begun.

* two (top flight) league titles

* three FA and/or League Cups (or equivalent)

* the Double (league title + FA Cup)

* one (top flight) league title plus 2 FA and/or League Cups (or equivalent)

Gomez... The agenda at this point is becoming clearer. With three further seasons entrusted to me by Boris before he'd pull the plug on me in Maastricht it was time to make a play for the title - or at the very least progress deep into the cup rounds. I've isolated the Dutch Cup as a trophy which could set us towards the further goal, whilst we currently do not have a squad worthy of challenging for the Ere Divisie title with a few additions there is no reason why we cannot challenge for the cup. The only problem is that in my two seasons in Maastricht we have not progressed past the first round.

With the permanent signing of Nilsson and at least three quality players on there way on free transfers I am happy with the building process. The further addition of another attacking midfielder and a right winger will help but with the meagre finances available do not make this easy. Also Maastricht does not seem to appeal to many of these players - not for the money we have to offer anyway. In thinking you can add european qualification to cup success this season as the goals, i'm certain european action might just free up a little extra transfer budget.

MVV Player Movement - Summer 2006

There will be plenty of new names this season at De Geusselt as Benny Gomez refuses to rest on the relative success of 11th place. The defensive ranks have been shaken up with young Belgian Alexandr Bryssinck moving on to FC Brussels in a move which suited both parties. The fiery turk Balci has opted for a return home with Fenerbache. The subsequent addition of Lanzaro, Brack and Breinburg will more than compensate these losses. The club has high hopes for young Colombian Alex Garcia (Luis Alejandro Garcia) in the important holding midfield role which they struggled to fill last season. Alex joins from semi-pro Colombian side Girardot along with compatriat Felix Garcia from Deportivo B. Sergio will certainly push for a central midfield role if his reputation is to be believed whilst the likes of Edson, Schmeichel, Shoukov and Cardy will add depth across the team. Finally after numerous unsuccessful attempts to fill the right midfield role Soloman Kalou was snapped up on loan for a further season from Feyenoord alond with his Danish teammate Mtiliga.

Benour Gomez's squad was gradually taking shape. Such a cosmopolitan squad was usually reserved for the likes of Ajax and PSV but things were changing in Maastricht. The first team squad consisted of an Ivorian, one Cameroonian, a Swede, three Brazilians, a South Korean, one Frenchman, three Colombians, one Ukrainian, an Italian, a Moroccan, two Danes, a Russian and just four Dutchmen. Scoured from the French, German and Dutch leagues and the backstreets of Bogota and Girardot in Gomez's homeland. This was a side which Gomez believed would bring success not just personally but to Maastricht and the greater cause.

--------------------

Meanwhile Florent De Sousa relaxed in his hotel room in Marseille relieved after finally walking away from his first press conference and he knew what would be in the papers tomorrow. Not just in Marseille - not just in France - all over the world people will be choking on their toast. Patrick Vieira would not play for France again. He along with Dacourt, Wiltord and Trezeguet would be joining Pires, Barthez and Thuram in retirement. The French team would be turned upside down. Youngsters like Hatem Ben Arfa, Samir Nasri and Ahmed Yahiaoui would be given full caps and the side for the upcoming European Championships would be built around Kapo, Frey, Cisse and Mexes. Senior French players Henry, Rothen, Silvestre, Gallas, Zebina and Anelka would have a chance to make the European Cahmpionship squad however their futures beyond two years are limited. As Florent left the press room he was assured that the FFF were untirely behind him and he was doing the right thing for the future of French football. Jean Gallice was nowhere to be seen. But the media would soon get used to that.

MVV Maastricht Team Report - 2006/07 (Part 1)

With speculation that Wintjens will be moving on within a couple of seasons the incentive could not be greater for the prospective backups to push their case. Schmeichel is a class player and Abella is just potential, potential, potential.

Goalkeepers

Danny Wintjens - GK - Dutch - 22 – 775k euros

Cemented his spot as the number one keeper last season with maturity beyond his years. A local product at Maastricht it would not be a surprise if he wanted to further his career elsewhere in the future.

Kasper Schmeichel - GK - Danish - 20 – 600k

Joins on a free and will add depth to the position. Should fight Abella for the backup job and depending on Wintjens future is a potential number one at De Geusselt.

Carlos Andrés Abella – GK – Colombian – 21 – 725k

Showed promise after moving from Colombia late last season. Squad player at present but his future is much brighter.

The flat back four will be utilised once more in true Gomez fashion. The personnel however have changed considerably with injury prone young veteran Bryssinck moving on with the best wishes of the club and Peppinck forced to the bench with the numerous new acquisitions.

Defenders

Raphael Supusepa - D/M L - Holland - 28 - 550K

The club captain will lead the way from left back again. He’s the stalwart at the back at MVV.

Andriy Proshyn - SW/D C - Ukrainian - 21 – 1.2M

After a breakout season claiming the Dutch Young Player of the Year Andriy is the rock in the centre of the defence and should be for years to come.

Maurizio Lanzaro - D C – Italian - 24 - 250K

An interesting acquisition from AS Roma Lanzaro is expected to partner Proshyn in the centre. Maurizio is a powerful header and was a talented member of Roma’s youth ranks.

Koen Brack - D RC – Dutch - 25 - 325K

A quality centre back or full back from Cambuur. Koen will start at right back and support the centre pairing. A lethal striker of the dead ball and more versatile than expected.

Reinhard Breinburg - D/DM RC – Dutch - 22 - 375K

A quality pick up who can play in the back four or in the midfield quite comfortably. Always steady and well suited to the Ere Divisie.

Fabian Peppinck - D RL - Holland - 28 - 110K

After a great season last time round Fabian will be forced to back-up the likes of Supusepa and Brack this season. A valuable squad member.

Félix García - D C – Colombian - 23 - 60K

Joined from Deportivo in the summer and adds quality and depth to the backline.

Patrick Mtiliga - D/DM L - Danish - 26 - 230K

On loan for the season from Feyenoord Patrick is a quick skilful fullback that adds further depth to the revamped defensive unit.

Michel Kruijer - D RC - Holland - 29 - 12K

Strickly a reserves player in his last season at the club.

Sjoerd Winkens - D LC - Holland - 23 - 60K

Winken’s continues to play above himself however with added defensive cover this season I struggle to see him making an impact.

(Still to come - Part 2 - Midfielders and Strikers)

MVV Maastricht Team Report - 2006/07 (Part 2)

Midfielders

Gomez’s midfield group has always been at the core of the team and we plan to use the same 1-2-2 formation with a holding defensive midfielder, two central players who can create and score and two wide midfield/forwards with the freedom to attack at will.

Houssain Ouhsaine Ouichou - AM/F LC – Morocco - 26 - 3.6M

Fast becoming the most important component at this club the experienced Moroccan international usually lines up on the left flank but can move inward.

Salomon Kalou - AM R – Ivory Coast - 21 - 4.5M

After a successful season’s loan last time round Kalou will play an important role on the right wing after Feyenoord again showed no interest in keeping him in Rotterdam.

Leonardo - F RC – Brazil - 29 - 1.6M

Veteran midfielder in possibly his last season in Maastricht following failed contract negotiations will play in the centre of midfield with fellow Brazilian Sergio.

[sérgio - AM C - Brazil - 25 - 1.7M

A natural goalscorer and a creative worker he adds polish and much needed class to the side. A great pick up and thee obvious future replacement for Leonardo.

Alex García - DM C – Colombia - 21 - 2M

From the backstreets of Girardot Alex is expected to control the midfield from the holding position. A bargain at 40k euros in the summer he is a commanding footballer with the versatility to be a potential centre half.

André Luiz - AM LC – Brazil – 32 - 55K

Completing the Brazilian midfield influence the veteran will mainly pinch hit off the bench. A quality deliverer of the ball and corner specialist.

Julien Cardy - DM C – French - 25 - 140K

Another defensive midfielder new to the club and is expected to fight Garcia for the starting spot. Brings steadiness and pace to the side.

Jos Hooiveld - DM C – Dutch – 23 - 85K

Looks forced to backup the holding midfield role this season after the arrival of the talented Garcia and Cardy.

Dmitry Shoukov - AM RL – Russia – 31 – 160k

Brought to the club to add depth on the flanks. Not expected to play too much.

John Goossens - AM L – Dutch – 18 - 1.7M

Talented young winger out of Ajax’s youth ranks may get a few first team matches this season but is one for the future.

Jonathan Vargas - DM C – Colombia – 22 - 55K

Young backup defensive midfielder not likely to push for the first team any time soon.

Tom van Bergen - M L – Dutch – 24 - 65K

Reserves winger. Future at MVV unsure after this season.

Rogier Molhoek - M C – Dutch – 25 - 30K

Talented midfielder but his spot is quickly fading with the arrivals of Andre Luiz and Sergio. Looks set for reserves action this season.

Joas Siahaya - M C – Dutch – 21 - 35K

Reserves midfielder and little more.

Ibad Muhamudu - AM RL – Morocco – 24 - 45K

Winger out of his depth at this level. Future is seriously in doubt with the arrival of Goossens.

Forwards

With MVV predominantly playing a lone striker the competition is on for this spot, however they have shown versatility in the past and both Park and Nilsson can play midfield roles pushing forward.

Park Joo-Young - F RC – South Korea - 21 - 2M

Extremely talented striker who can pinch hit in midfield. Likely to fight Nilsson for the target man in the 4-5-1 formation.

Lars Nilsson - F LC – Sweden – 24 - 700K

Playing his third season in Maastricht but his first as a contracted player Lars will be expected to lead the scoring once more. A natural striker with surprising strength.

Eric Atuahene - S C – Ghana – 22 - 100K

Last seasons surprise packet suited well to this level of competition. May find competition tough with the switch to a lone striker formation but always a fierce competitor.

Blaise Mamoum - S C – Cameroon – 27 - 450K

Dangerous forward with lightning feet always causes problems and will add spark off the bench. Had minimal impact after signing last season but is expected to further his reputation this season.

Edson - S C – Brazil – 27 - 210K

One of five Brazilians now at the club Edson adds depth to the strike force.

Bruno Augusto - S C – Brazil – 20 - 85K

Prolific striker in his homeland may have to make do with the reserves for now but is a promising star for the future.

[This season the story format will change slightly with the season divided into four parts and post match updates provided from the perspective of Gomez’s coach Antonio Calderon. The story plots and Gomez views will remain as they have been. This might freshen the action up a bit from my point of view anyway. Let me

know what you think either way.]

Pre-season 2006/07

Antonio Calderon… Over six matches we set about finding the most suited lineup for our 4-5-1 formation which we have developed over the past six months to best fit our current squad and the Dutch style of football. The new recruits Lanzaro and Sergio look outstanding and I’m stunned that Sergio hasn’t been a regular for Roda JC in the past but we’re certainly happy to have him. After scoring in the last match of last season Mamoum has continued his scoring ways with four goals off the bench and has staked his claim for a first team spot. With the exception of the striker position the side has sorted itself out and the best eleven should pick themselves most weeks.

MVV Preferred starting lineup (August 2006)

Gomez... On the verge of the new season I have finally decided that something must be done with the coaching situation. With the increased responsibilities of Calderon I have decided the time is right to cut ties with my assistant Rob Delahaye. Despite a good working relationship I can't help but think that Delahaye is waiting for me to fail and take over himself, with the current situation as tight as it is I would really prefer to have people around me I can trust completely. If we do not claim a trophy this season the target will be slipping away and I will not allow this to happen. This cannot happen.

MVV Fixtures 22.8.06 – 29.10.06 (Ere Divisie unless otherwise stated)

22.8.06 Zwolle @ Oosterenk, Zwolle

The newly promoted Zwolle were always going to scrap it out at home and scrap they did. Despite going a goal down midway through the first half we fought back well dominating possession and went in to the break with a deserved 2-1 lead through strikes by Leonardo and Brack. Brack’s strike a delightful freekick from the edge of the area. Zwolle started the second half brightly and equalized things after just three minutes, what ensued was excellent from our perspective. Attack after attack we peppered the goal without reward until the late inclusion of Mamoum changed things, weaving his magic Mamoum beat three players before rounding the keeper and scoring the winner with 86 minutes on the clock. A crucial three points to kick-off the season. Best players will be awarded by the coaching staff after each match with a 3-2-1 points system going towards the Coaches Player of the Year Award.

Goals– Leonardo, Brack, Mamoum

Best– 3-Leonardo 2-Sergio 1-Mamoum

Attendance 6699

Zwolle 2-3 MVV

27.8.06 FC Twente @ Arke Stadion, Enshede

Twente are always hard to take points off but we managed to get a lead early through Sergio who was left with a simple finish after brilliant work by Park and then Kalou down the right squaring the ball for the Brazilian to tap home. Twente instantly upped the intensity and you could say we were lucky to hang on for the three points but we were more than happy with the sides defensive endeavors and we kept most of their chances to a distance which was great. Two games six points and a Sergio has made a great start to his career with us.

Goals– Sergio

Best- 3-Sergio 2-Proshyn 1-Wintjens

Att. 12304

FC Twente 0-1 MVV

12.9.06 Volendam @ De Guesselt, Maastricht

In the past couple of seasons Volendam have never troubled us and in our first home game of the season we weren’t about to let them in. In spite of our early dominance we had to wait till the 38th minute for a lead and it came through Sergio once more from the spot after Kalou was crudely brought down in the area. Our slightly dysfunctional forward line managed to keep the game to a one goal margin until Mamoum came off the bench late and iced the result with another clinical finish.

Goals– Sergio, Mamoum

Best- 3-Kalou 2-Sergio 1-Lanzaro

Att. 9573

MVV 2-0 Volendam

15.9.06 Willem II @ De Guesselt, Maastricht

Perhaps we should have taken more notice of the inefficient nature of our strikeforce in the past two games. Today it caught up on us and I can tell you Benny was not happy that we let these points slip away. A 33rd minute strike by Magrao was enough to see us off and with both Park and Nilsson struggling to find their feet this season it may be time to try something different.

Best- 3-Proshyn 2-Lanzaro 1-Brack

Att. 9995

MVV 0-1 Willem II

23.9.06 Sparta @ Sparta Stadion, Rotterdam

To state the obvious this pre-season at MVV we didn’t expect to regain the services of Soloman Kalou from Feyenoord but when the option came in we snapped him up for another 12 months instantly. I mention this because today he once more proved his worth leading us to a confident away win against Sparta. We had only a few good chances early on but managed to put away two of them through the outstanding Kalou and then Park, before Sparta pulled one back just before the half from the penalty spot. In a tight second stanza we put the wall in place and held on for another great away win.

Goals- Kalou, Park

Best- 3-Kalou 2-Alex Garcia 1-Wintjens

Att. 9359

Sparta 1-2 MVV

1.10.06 AZ @ De Guesselt, Maastricht

Another early lead this time through Sergio’s penalty after just 6 minutes but we knew that AZ weren’t the sort of side to roll over so easily. Early in the second half Brugginck equalized for AZ and we were lucky to hold on for a point against a quality side. If we are to progress as a club these are the matches we must start to win, having said that a point is always better than none.

Goals– Sergio

Best- 3-Proshyn 2-Wintjens 1-Sergio

MVV 1-1 AZ

4.10.06 Ajax @ Amsterdam ArenA, Amsterdam

Always the toughest test of the season this away trip to Amsterdam was to be no different. In a match that we led for almost an hour after Leonardo’s first half strike the action didn’t really hot up until the final 20 minutes. First Ajax equalized through Babel, then Ouichou regained the lead for us with just 9 minutes to play, but still there was time. Niedzielan equalized for Ajax a second time on 85 minutes and then the heart wrenching final blow as Ono drove home a spectacular winner in injury time for the home side. Disappointed but definitely not down hearted we headed home a stronger side for the loss.

Goals– Leonardo, Ouichou

Best- 3-Ouichou 2-Lanzaro 1-Proshyn

Att. 45082

Ajax 3-2 MVV

15.10.06 NEC @ De Guesselt, Maastricht

After the lesson against Ajax we came out hard and fast against NEC at home, as the pressure built we forced them deeper and deeper into their penalty box. On the brink of half time we won a free-kick 30 yards out in a shooting position and Brack did just that. Firing home and rewarding our great first half pressure. The game faded out towards the end as our defence once more held up well and despite our best efforts we couldn’t increase the margin beyond one goal. It wasn’t to matter.

Goals– Brack

Best- 3-Alex Garcia 2-Brack 1-Supesupa

Att. 9967

MVV 1-0 NEC

22.10.06 FC Groningen @ De Guesselt, Maastricht

In a superb team effort we held on for another 1-0 victory at De Geusselt this time at the dispense of FC Groningen. Kalou gave us the all important lead in the first half and after that we defended manfully through the likes of the fearless Proshyn and our young leader by example Wintjens in goal. Today I could just tell he wasn’t going to blot his clean sheet.

Goals– Kalou

Best- 3-Proshyn 2-Leonardo 1-Wintjens

Att. 9997

MVV 1-0 FC Groningen

25.10.06 FC Utrecht @ Niew Galgenwaard, Utrecht

In the most entertaining 0-0 draw I’ve witnessed in a while it could easily have been different. Both keepers were brilliant but in a match that could have gone either way I have no doubt Nilsson, Mamoum and Sergio will all be ruing their missed chances today.

Best- 3-Wintjens 2-Proshyn 1-Kalou

Att. 12121

FC Utrecht 0-0 MVV

29.10.06 Dutch Cup 3rd Round - NEC @ de Goffert, Nijmegen

After we’d made it clear that our main aim as to do well in the Dutch Cup we fielded our strongest side in Nijmegen and well it was a spectacular encounter. Early on we looked very dangerous with Sergio, Park and Ouichou causing all sorts of trouble and on just 4 minutes Sergio cleaned up in the area putting away the loose ball after Park’s swerving shot was only parried by the despairing keeper. The lead was not to last. On 21 minutes Jans equalised for NEC following some exquisite work down the left. Once more we blew chances late in the first half and should have been up a goal or two but for missed chances by Park and Sergio who was cutting up NEC’s defence. Early in the second half Sergio broke onto Leonardo’s ball and was clipped in the area, the referee did what he had to do and awarded the penalty. Sergio duly stepped up and placed the ball into the bottom corner to regain our deserved lead. Then disaster hit in only a matter of minutes we lost Nilsson to a broken leg and then Sergio and Brack were also forced off with injuries. On 86 minutes NEC did what they’d been threatening since we lost the commanding Sergio in midfield, Murillo snuck behind our defence and there was nothing Wintjens could do about the clinical finish. Full time 2-2. After a scrappy 30 minutes of extra time in which we also lost Leonardo to an injury and were subsequently down to ten men the match went to penalties. Now we all hate penalties so I’ll keep this short. Wintjen’s stood tall and saved three penalties and amazingly NEC had managed to miss all five penalties, Proshyn and Park eventually put away the two we needed to progress in an exhausting and spiteful encounter.

Goals– Sergio(2)

The full fury of the FFF and the French press was in force as Florent shaped up to the press conference after the loss to Belgium in Paris. Despite recent wins against the likes of Georgia and Khazahkstan (including four goals by Cisse in Georgia) you simply do not lose to Belgium. Florent despite growing up in Paris didn't have a dislike towards the Belgians. He liked their beer, he liked their chocolate, he even liked their frittes. Being a positive man Florent had been impressed by Kapo and Mexes especially but he was wearing thin with Henry and Rothen. Time will tell how long things stay this civilised at the FFF.

Gomez... My heart was in my mouth as Wintjens saved that first penalty and then Park sealed the advancement. After pledging that the cup would be our priority this season to almost stumble at the first hurdle would have been devaststing. It looks like Nilsson will be missing at least until the new year and he will be sorely missed indeed. Park is starting to find some form at this level after an indifferent time last season and Mamoum is always dangerous off the bench - between these two I expect Nilsson's role to be covered. Our next combatants in the cup will be FC Twente and I can't wait.

MVV Fixtures 7.11.06 – 1.01.07 (Ere Divisie unless otherwise stated)

7.11.06 Vitesse @ De Guesselt, Maastricht

One of those games. Without Nilsson for the next two or three months the future looks a little dim after this insipid performance. On the plus side we restricted Vitesse to only a handful of shots for the entire match, unfortunately Wintjens couldn’t keep out their only shot on target. Kalou was inspired down the right and clearly the most talented player on the park but our strikers and midfield just couldn’t find space in the box to create any real dangerous chances. Vitesse were desperate and simply we were not.

21.11.06 Heerenveen @ Abe Lenstra Stadion, Heerenveen

With the absence of Nilsson we gave Mamoum a rare start and he certainly jumped at the opportunity. In a tightly fought contest Mamoum’s pace and clinical finishing proved the difference. Literally with our first attack of the match Leonardo played a ball to Mamoum’s feet on the edge of the area were he proceeded to turn his man and blast the ball past the hapless Malafeev for Heerenveen. Then on just 15 minutes Sergio’s attempted through ball was deflected towards goal, as the big Russian came for the ball Mamoum nipped in rounding Malafeev with ease and walking the ball in for 2-0. Heerenveen never bridged the two goal margin and we held out for a good win and return to form in a match which showed everyone just what Mamoum is capable of.

28.11.06 Feyenoord @ De Guesselt, Maastricht

A lapse in concentration at the back saw one point slip from our grasp in a match in which we were undoubtedly outclassed for much of the encounter. In the 79th minute Feyenoord’s Jean played an ambitious ball deep into the penalty box but our defence froze and the brave WIntjen’s could do nothing as Ghali slotted home. As dour as our defence had been this one moment ended the contest. Wintjens was exceptional in goals but he had few team mates that could hold their heads high in a disappointing loss.

3.12.06 RKC @ Mandemakers Stadion, Waalwijk

Once more our away form showed greater resolve than that in Maastricht as we travelled to Waalwijk and RKC who were holding up the foot of the table. On just 3 minutes Park – playing in a new midfiled role – opened the scoring as he pounced on Leonardo’s shot which was too hot for Kujovic in goals. RKC fought back and on 33 minutes they deservedly equalised, Supesupa was beaten too easily down the right and Schuurman’s low cross was smashed home by Vicelich past Schmeichel – deputising for the slightly injured Wintjens – for 1-1. On the verge of half time Kalou broke through the middle and worked with Mamoum to free up Park in the area and he made no mistake burying the chance to reclaim our lead. A second half of missed opportunities ensued for both sides but we were happy to go home with the all important three points. A brace for Park playing in midfield was a nice surprise and he once more displayed his versatility – his English is starting to improve as well.

8.12.06 De Graafschap @ De Guesselt, Maastricht

Gomez and I have spoken about it but this was another example of our home form failing despite our successes on the road. Once more we dominated possession at home but failed to take our chances. Zwarthoed was brilliant in goals for De Graafschap but we had culprits across the board missing chances. With Sergio missing injured we struggled to create clear cut chances and when we did the likes of Kalou, Mamoum and Leonardo proceeded to clinically waste them. The 36 year old Ronald De Boer came off the bench for De Graafschap, what a class player. In his final season of professional football and after speaking to him after the match he looks set to join us in the summer on the sidelines after qualifying as a physio.

3.12.06 Dutch Cup 4th Round - FC Twente @ Arke Stadion, Enschede

Another road trip in the Cup and we were on our way to Enshede without Sergio who is still hampered by a minor hamstring injury and Nilsson who will not return until the new year. We started with an attacking lineup, Park again taking the field in the centre of midfield behind Mamoum who was instructed to carry the ball with pace and draw out the Twente defence for our attacking midfield group to push forward into the area on the break. We applied pressure from the start and in the first 20 minutes both Mamoum and Park missed good chances to put us in front. It was Brack who broke the deadlock on 22 minutes with a cracking free kick that wickedly deflected of the wall and past Twente’s stranded keeper. Before half time we should have furthered our lead but for Boschker in goals for Twente denying Mamoum brilliantly on two separate occasions when you would have expected the Cameroonian to score. Late in the second half Twente started to control the match as we dropped behind the ball and both Koster and N’Kufo scuffed chances before Sibum remarkably scooped the ball over an empty goal after Wintjens flapped at a cross. We were destined to advance in an even encounter and we did enough. Just.

26.12.06 NAC Breda @ Fujifilm Stadion, Breda

In a quiet first half both sides felt eachother out without really looking like scoring Park was controlling things in the middle of the pitch but Mamoum and Leonardo couldn’t find any space up front. The second half started brightly with Park blazing over a good opportunity before he made amends, setting Mamoum free behind NAC’s defence and he made no mistake easily scoring under the outstretched keeper. Unfortunately this seemed to spark NAC into action. Much more determined and much more dangerous they began to pepper our goals and on 69 minutes they found the equaliser. Then as we began to restructure things once more to attack they hit again, this time Ronnie Stam getting up to head home a deep cross and we were down 2-1. Despite our attacking endeavours we couldn’t come back and this would go down as a loss we probably deserved. Tactically outclassed I know Gomez took this one personally.

1.1.07 Volendam @ Veronica Stadion, Volendam

A new year and a new start after the boxing day disaster in Breda we travelled to Volendam keen to redeem ourselves before the winter break kicks in. Almost in spite of it's name the Veronica stadium is surprisingly not all that attractive. The match started poorly when on 22 minutes Leonardo’s innocuous challenge on Ketting was deemed to be worthy of a penalty. Despite the jeers from our travelling support van Es scored easily and I’m not proud of what happened next but I’m passionate if little else. With the fourth official and fellow coach Jean Gallice attempting to restrain me I may have gestured towards the referee Mr Zeinstra with a slitting the throat motion and I was sent from the stadium. As I approached the team bus resigned to listening to the remainder of the match with the bus driver I noticed he was waving to me smiling broadly. Apparently from the kick-off Mamoum set off on a weaving run down the right then cutting in at the byline and setting up Park for the simplest of finishes and we had equalised. At the start of the second half van Es got the better of us again finishing from Greene’s cross and that was it for me I couldn’t believe we were throwing away this match against Volendam of all clubs – Volendam. As the final whistle blew over the radio I switched it off and wondered how Gomez would react.

Gomez... A wonder strike from my rock at the back in Koen Brack is enough to see us through to the next round of the cup and my initial dream is still afloat for this season at least. The league form has been good but to find ourselves eighteen points away from Ajax at the midway point of the season shows just how great the gap is in the Eredivisie. Right now there is no difference for me between third place and fifteenth so my focus will be even more towards the cup at all costs. Of course the financial gains of qualifying for Europe would help our campaign next season but never the less when we win the cup we will qualify for the UEFA cup in any case. Of the serious topic of football i am very pleased with the way Antonio Calderon my right hand man has stepped up at the club since i gave my old assistant the arse in the summer. The passion of Calderon can never be questioned.

Jardin du Luxembourg in winter is one of Paris' true delights and today Benny Gomez relaxed as he awaited the arrival of Florent. Despite the apparent pressure coming from the direction of the FFF Florent de Sousa's demeanor hadn't altered. A faithful man and a true character the loss to Belgium hadn't dented his pride and a further loss at the hands of lowly Georgia raised predictable speculation amongst the media that the FFF's decision and stance was not only misguided but fast becoming embarrassing. Florent reacted with the unpredictability the media were becoming accustomed to. Zebina, Henry and every other player above the age of 28 would not figure for France so long as the de Sousa/Gallice reign stood. Gomez had reason to be relaxed as Florent sat beside across from him on one of the lonely antiquated iron lace chairs that sit in the jardin all year round, the dusted snow merely completed the scene that was so typically unique to this majestical city.

Almost in disbelief at what his old friend had accomplished with the FFF Gomez quickly turned the conversation back to the job at hand. MVV was becoming a problem. Well not MVV really nor the progress which he had made in such a short period of time. The fact of the matter was any manager would be delighted to have taken a club like MVV to the top half of the Eredivisie, but Gomez's job was greater than this and one thing seemed to stand in his way. One club which could single handedly derail the whole mission. Ajax of Amsterdam. With a strength and depth unrivalled in the Netherlands Ajax look set to claim another title this season and it's hard to see how any club wrestle the title away from Amsterdam in the near future. Florent's advice was simple. Have faith in your ambitions and place your faith in your players. Did Gomez believe in his players? Of course. Do his players believe in him? We'll see. Is the city of Maastricht ready for a revolution? You can almost feel the rumblings. As Gomez has often stated to the Dutch media almost pleading for respect from his neighbours. "You do not need to go to Amsterdam, Rotterdam or Eindhoven to see the fireworks!"

As brothers they headed back to Gare du Nord and Florent reassured the Colombian that he was part of something big and everything was going to plan. Boris was more than happy and the connections truly have the faith.

MVV Player Movements - January 2007

Ricardo Sousa and Said Khiter join the club for the remainder of the season whilst we have released Eric Atuahene to Haarlem on loan for the next six months. Khiter joins temporarily from Lens but it is Sousa the club is excited about. Benny snapped up the 28 year old Portugese midfielder for just 160K when Hannover 96 made it publically known that he would not be figuring in their Bundesliga plans. A creative and exquisite ball player he has been tainted by a certain tendancy for violence and our supporters were not all that supportive when we announced that the journeyman would soon be in action in Maastricht. Benny has assured the coaching staff that he is the type of player we need to gamble on if we are to break into the top tier of Dutch football.

MVV Fixtures 7.2.07 – 4.4.07 (Ere Divisie unless otherwise stated)

7.2.07 Dutch Cup Quarter Final - Roda JC @ Parkstad Limburg Stadion, Kerkrade

AC... With Park leading our attack once more we were off to a flyer and on 4 minutes a quick counter attack saw Sousa on debut play the killer ball to Park who made no mistake sliding the ball past the oncoming keeper. On 22 minutes it was Park the provider as he played the ball to the slippery Sergio on the edge of the box, jinking past the lone defender Sergio easily scored for 2-0. On the half hour an unmarked Sonko pulled one back for Roda the culmination of some very poor defending. After some concerted second half pressure it was Sonko again who caused problems for our defence and on 66 minutes his defence splitting pass found Jongen in the box and he buried the chance with clinical ease. Despite more fast paced action back and forth the game looked headed to extra time. Just as the fourth official signalled for the 2 minutes of injury time Brack hacked clear a loose ball to the feet of Ouichou who managed to turn under pressure and played a 50 metre ball into the path of Mamoum (fresh after just coming off the bench) who's pace took him past the last defender and he gratefully smashed the ball past Coutinho in the Roda goal for the winning strike.

Kerkrade, Post-Match Press Conference

Down to the final four now in the cup, can MVV go all the way?

Gomez... I honestly believe with the current playing group we can win every match we play, so yes we can definately win and with Ajax going down to Herenveen the draw opens up a bit.

Ricardo Sousa has already showed he can play football, do you think his history will follow him here?

You cannot teach some things. Having said that Ricardo has done everything required since coming here two weeks ago and i don't expect anything less from any one of my players.

You insist on playing Mamoum off the bench and with another outstanding performance today can he force his way into the starting side?

Blaise knows his role in the side and today he showed exactly why we bring him off the bench most matches. I'll ask you a question, would you like a player like Mamoum coming on fresh and running at you every time he gets the ball after you've played your heart out for an hour already? I doubt it. So that's why we do it.

Do you feel the respect you are recieving around the league now is warranted?

I'm guessing you want me to say something controversial with a stupid question like that. We are up there with clubs like Herenveen and AZ now whether you guys like it or not, give us a couple more season's and we'll be challenging the real big boys. Anything else?

Who is Said Khiter? He was named on the bench today and no-one seems to know much about him can you fill us in.

Khiter is a frenchman on loan from Lens until the end of the season. A tall strong young striker he will add a different avenue to goal for us when the guys like Park, Nilsson and Mamoum cannot find a way through. Last question.

With the current rumours gaining steam do you wish to respond to the accusations that you may be tempted to leave MVV should the right offer come in?

No. I will only leave Maastricht when the rightful order is restored. Now i've got a bus to catch.

13.2.07 FC Twente @ De Guesselt, Maastricht

Amazingly in a relatively even encounter we ended up comfortable winners against an unlucky Twente side today. Sousa again starred this time setting up Park for the first goal before scoring his first for the club from the spot on the stroke of half time. Wintjens was great between the sticks and Mamoum (on for an injured Park) comleted the scoring on the hour finishing Kalou's fine work down the right. Three more points and news just through that we'll meet FC Utrecht in the semi final of the cup. with the other semi featuring Feyenoord and Herenveen.

In a match where Zwolle came out ultra defensively we were ecstatic with the quality in whic we disposed of them. Leonardo found his way back in the starting lineup as Sousa was rested and he certainly set about proving a point setting up Park for the first and then Mamoum for the second. Sergio made sure of the result from the spot after Proshyn was fouled and Khiter found the net for the first time in the red of MVV with a decisive header from 6 yards out. Interesting footnote to this match with Leonardo's future in serious doubt after failed contract negotiations it looks like Gomez is happy to show his hand making it quite clear that despite his form today Leonardo would not start ahead of Sousa for the remainder of this season unless fitness dictated. Leonardo looks set to return to Brazil to finish his career and no-one in Maastricht can resent him for this as he's been a brave combatant for the MVV cause.

We followed up the dominant performance against Sparta with an equally impressive display in Alkmaar. Leonardo once more made his mark which is becoming a habit since we've restricted his first team action, first crossing for Sergio with th eball cleared to his feet where he proceeded to take the ball past one AZ defender before centring the ball for the unmarked Park who made no mistake with the finish on the half hour. Despite increased pressure and ball retention by AZ Wintjens was unbeatable in goals and when Mamoum broke free late in the game after numerous half chances for AZ he made no mistake skinning two defenders before finishing with class to make it 2-0. Some games you have to sit back and wait for your chances and this was one of those, great result against another top six side.

When PSV come to visit we never know what to expect. Today we set out a bit cautiously as PSV's form has been very good but with Sousa and Sergio controlling the park early we managed to create the first real chance when Sergio cut out a poor Alex pass and found himself through on goal. The Brazilian easily rounded ten Rouwelaar in goals and we were surprisingly 1-0 up on 6 minutes. What ensued was constant attacks from PSV and desperate defending on our behalf for over an hour of football, our few counter attacks were rather fruitless and even the inclusion on Mamoum served no threat to PSV. Eventually (and it always seemed they would) Escude managed to find a way to equalise for PSV utilising his power in the area to head home Colin's cross with just 8 minutes remaining. The match eased now as both sides settled for the point. A match of opportunity but one that we'll gladly take a point from.

11.3.07 Ajax @ De Guesselt, Maastricht

No-one would have thought that with matches against AZ, PSV and Ajax in early March we could have claimed two wins and a draw from these three games. So when Kalou and Babel both missed good chances in a lacklustre first half it was lokking inevitable that Ajax would put at least one past us but probably more. As the second half began we reshuffled things, playing with three strikers for the first time since i've been at MVV we began to take the game to them a bit more. Mamoum was causing havoc running at their tall centre halves and on 48 minutes he drew out the defence before finding Nilsson on the left flank cutting in, Nilsson jinked past one and slid the ball to an unmarked Ouichou who rounded the on rushing Stekelenberg with ease and we were 1-0 up. Then despite Ajax's best attempts to hit back it was Mamoum again who got the better of Maduro and played in Nilsson, this time the Swede got to the byline and smashed the ball across the face where an amazed Ouichou prodded the ball into the open net for 2-0. 2-0 up against Ajax and i was amazed to see Gomez relaxed and swaying back on his seat on the sideline. We threw on Andre Luiz to sure up the middle of the pitch and then on 84 minutes it happened Mamoum took of on a mazey run down the right beating a couple before spotting Nilsson at the top of the area, consumately holding up the ball Nilsson feigned left before turning onto his right and smashing the ball past the hapless Stekeleberg in goals. MVV three Ajaz nil! We decided there and then that we would let the boys celebrate this one tonight but tomorrow we'd be back in preperation for our cup match.

Gomez... To embarrass a club like Ajax the way we just did is an amazing result and i think it might make people stand up and take notice what's going on down here in Maastricht. My only fear is that the big cup semi-final against FC Utrecht is just days away and we must refocus as in reality it is a much bigger match for us as a club than the Ajax match. We started Mamoum against Ajax and played him with Park and Nilsson up front, i don't expect to be so attacking in the cup however we'll start Mamoum and Park for sure.

_______________

19.3.07 Dutch Cup Semi Final - FC Utrecht @ Niew Galgenwaard, Utrecht

The match started in spectacular fashion when on just 9 minutes Utrecht keeper Terol took a back pass and decided to carry the ball up towards the right flank seemingly unaware that the tricky Mamoum was ghosting in behind him, Mamoum dispossessed the lanky keeper and when he turned to see the retreating Terol he proceeded to audaciously lob him from 40 yards out on the sideline. 1-0 up and what a shocking start for Utrecht, not that we're complaining. Kruys and Leitoe both had good chances to equalise and at the other end Park managed to not get on the scoresheet despite numerous scoreable chances. Then just as the game seemed in our hands on 92 minutes Kieft rose to nod goalwards a looping header from a threatening cross and Wintjens could do nothing but watch it drop into the goals. We're going to extra time. The first half of extra time passed with no real chances either way, just as the second began Breinburg of all people managed to bob up on the edge of the area and as he attempted to hold up the ball he was muscled over. The whistle blew and despite claims for a penalty the referee placed the ball just inches outside the box. Brack purposefuly took aim and blasted the ball around the wall and past the flailing Terol and into the top corner. 2-1 and we held on for 12 anxious minutes. This match just goes to show how well we're going right now. In a tight tussle with few chances NEC were probably the best side for 90 minutes but they discounted our never say die attitude. In the 91st minute Peppinck and Kalou set super-sub Mamoum down the right flank, he proceeded to cut in at the byline before rifling the ball across the face of goal where it was harder to miss the target than score for Ouichou and he didn't miss. Then on 92 minutes Leonardo lobbed a ball over for Ouichou who rounded the last defender and slid the ball home. 2-0 and it could have gone either way really, the real credit must go to our defence for keeping us in the match for the first 90 minutes.

Gomez... Sitting fourth with seven matches left we are quietly confident of sealing a UEFA Cup spot and with our cup run continuing all the way to the final this season still has plenty to play for. With Leonardo confirming with me just last week that he will be going home to Brazil when his contract expires at the end of the season i am very pleased to see the way Ricardo Sousa has taken to my team. I now am very confident that he and Sergio will make a formidable midfield partnership next season and the loss of Leonardo will not hurt us significally. Our cup final opponents Feyenoord have proven to be great competitors whenever we've played them recently so I expect a real clash of two very attacking teams in what should be a great display of Dutch football and so long as we are victorious I will see the light here in Maastricht for the first time. Away from football I must say that there is becoming a very strong feeling of national pride and value within the Dutch culture here in Maastricht, I'm sure that MVV's standing within the nations football elite is playing a small part in this.

Walking through the old quarters in Algiers Florent pondered how he had become what he was today. Following a successful friendly win against South Africa in Cape Town he had opted to spend some time in his mother's homeland before returning to the relative chaos fo the FFF and their floundering Euro 2008 qualification campaign. The French national team was surrounded by controversy mainly due to the alleged destructive nature of Florent's selection process and his apparent distain towards non-migrant French nationals. Algiers had always been a place he would retreat to since the late 70's when it was the political nture of Paris which he was escaping. Times had changed. A French Algerian controlling the national side was ridiculous in so many ways back then but with the tide of racism retreating it was 2007 and Florent found himself in the second most important seat in France. What would happen if France didn't make the next Euro's would anyone really care? Would the world be a better place? Checking his watch Florent hurried his pace, he had an appointment to meet.

MVV Fixtures 7.4.07 - 26.5.07 (Eredivisie unless otherwise stated)

7.4.07 Vitesse @ Gelredome, Arnhem

Calderon... In a furious first 20 minutes Sergio put us in front first on 5 minutes with Vitesse equalising immediately, before on 12 minutes Sergio did it again and we were 2-1 up. On 20 minutes Vitesse should have equalised once more but Hersi's penalty was saved by Wintjens. The game shifted in the second half when Ricardo Sousa was forced off the field with an injury and before we could replace him Knol had headed in the equaliser. With our most creative player off the field we struggled to claim the lead for the tied time and the match ran out a 2-2 draw. Probably the fitting result in an evenly fought match, doesn't look too bad for Sousa as he should be good in a few days.

Goals- Sergio(2)

Vitesse 2-2 MVV

13.4.07 Heerenveen @ De Guesselt, Maastricht

It was Gomez's 51st birthday today and the side didn't make it a good one. A decidedly wasteful display with Sergio and Brack missing the best chances in a match where we created enough chances to win this twice but in the end goals at either end of the match by Huntelaar and Rose were all Heerenveen needed to see us off.

Best- 3-Alex Garcia 2-Ouichou 1-Kalou

Att. 9729

MVV 0-2 Heerenveen

22.4.07 Feyenoord @ De Kuip, Rotterdam

We fell back into old ways today. Starting Nilsson for the first time in a while the Swede managed to give us an unexpected lead on just 8 minutes and as i turned to celebrate the strike with Gomez he had his head in his hands. It was then that he explained that on no less than five occasions last season Nilsson gave us leads within the first 10 minutes and went on to lose the matches. By the time i'd processed this Lurling had jinked past Brack and equalised for Feyenoord. The rest of the match was evenly fought as both sides settled but as the second half wore on Feyenoord wrestled control of the midfield and on 70 minutes Hofs' placed shot gave the home side the lead and then just 4 minutes later Dirk Kuyt ended any chances we had of saving a draw with a clinical finish. We will have to perform better than this in a months time when we face the same side for the Amstel Cup.

29.4.07 De Graafschap @ de Vijerberg, Doetinchem

Today we saw a much needed return to form as we put away the sort of sides we have to dispose of if we are to compete with the big boys. Nilsson starred backing up from his good performance in Rotterdam and ended the match with a deserved hat-trick. In truth we dominated the possession and the score only blew out as De Graafschap pushed for goals when down one and then two nil. Brack chimed in with a sharp finished following a messy scrap in the box. Good win which will keep us in touch with the top four.

8.5.07 NAC Breda @ De Guesselt, Maastricht

With Park rested and Ricardo Sousa set to miss the next three weeks with a foot injury we were stretched a little today for the visit of NAC Breda but it didn't seem to influence the result. Kalou and Sergio were outstanding in setting up Leonardo for the opener and Kalou sealed the result personally. It is excellent to see someone like Leonardo playing great football late in the season despite making it clear that his future lies away from Maastricht.

Goals- Leonardo, Kalou

MVV 2-0 NAC Breda

12.5.07 RKC @ De Guesselt, Maastricht

RKC are striving to stay above the relagation zone and todays match will be a set back in that regard. Everything went right for us today and when the hapless Kujovic in goals for RKC managed to turn the ball into his own net for the fourth goal you could almost feel sorry for the valiant Serb. Nilsson opened the scoring on 33 minutes and Andre Luiz ended it with a penalty in injury time to put RKC out of their misery. All this despite losing Ouichou and our most infuential player this season Sergio to minor injuroes after just 20 minutes.

Goals- Nilsson, Park, Lanzardo, Kujovic(og), Andre Luiz

20.5.07 PSV @ Philips Stadion, Eindhoven

In our final league match of the season we headed off to Eindhoven and the giants in PSV. Sitting fifth and without any hope of catching Heerenveen in fourth there was little to play for and with the cup final just six days away precaution was the key. PSV would have to settle for third this season after failing to defend their title as Ajax had already claimed back with a match to spare. In what would be their lowest finish since another third in 1999 the hierarchy were not happy and after today they'd have more reason to worry. We played a determined style of play pressing PSV into mistakes and when Kalou was knocked over just outside the area Brack stepped up and duly dispatched the freekick into the corner of the net. PSV tried to fight back but Wintjens wasn't going to make it easy for them at the back. Just before half time Kalou deftly played Nilsson in behind Alex and he poked the ball past ten Rouwelaar to make it 2-0 at the half. As the match faded away for PSV de Pinho and van der Schaaf could have given the home side a glimmer of hope but Wintjens was not to be beaten today. Injuries to Park and Supusepa were the only negatives from this encounter but the physio hsa assured us that both will pull up fine for saturday.

_______________

Gomez... In todays build up for the Amstel Cup final we have had a couple of minor victories it looks like our captain Supusepa and Ricardo Sousa will both take the field after proving their fitness just this morning in a closed training session on the outskirts of Rotterdam. Unfortunately Park will not take his place after failing to come up this morning and the only other first teamer missing will be ineligible Kalou who is ineligibale (as he cannot play against his contracted club). The defence will be Wintjens in goals, Brack on the right, Proshyn and Lanzaro in the middle and Supusepa on the left. In the midfield Alex Garcia will fill the hole in front of the back four, Sergio and Ricardo Sousa will control the middle of the park, Leonardo will get forward from the right flank whilst Ouichou will do the same on the left. Up front the in form Nilsson will start with Mamoum forced to the bench. Despite taking on a great side like Feyenoord in their own stadium i am confident that we will show everyone what we can do.

_______________

26.5.07 Amstel Cup Final - Feyenoord @ De Kuip, Rotterdam

Feyenoord started the final brightly and after just 7 minutes Lazovic had a great chance turned away when his powerful header was aimed straight at Wintjens. Just moments later Lurling who was giving Brack the run around early found Castelen with a great cross but he could not keep the header down as Wintjens watched it sail harmlessly over the goal. It wasn't till the 18th minute that we made our first real forward burst as Nilsson charged down the right before squaring the ball to Sergio at the top of the area, the Brazilian played in an unmarked Ouichou who proceeded to slew his shot wide of the post. Despite numerous chances bith Kuyt and Pardo were thwarted by Wintjens in the period up to half time. Half time 0-0. Kuyt could have put us to the sword but for the desperate play of Wintjens and Proshyn in particular in the first 45. We came out with a more positive outset and immediately Nilsson had a half chance which he miskicked wide of Babos' goal. On 54 minutes Lurling again threatened down the right for Feyenoord before setting up Kuyt to shoot weakly at Wintjens not troubling the young Dutchman. Sousa and Hagary traded harmless freekicks as the match approached the 70 minute mark. Then on 73 minutes the breakthrough finally came, Brack and Leonardo worked down the right before Nilsson picked up the ball and as Sergio surged into the box the Swede threaded a perfect pass for Sergio to stroke past Babos with clinical ease. 1-0 up in a tight match. Verbeek replaced the wasteful Kuyt and immediately he could have equalised for Feyenoord but his shot was tipped over by Wintjens. On 80 minutes Smolarek and Hagary worked the ball into our area where excellent Hofs finally did what the Rotterdam crowd must have thought was not going to happen, the brilliant Wintjens had finally been beaten. 1-1 and the match is back in the balance. Immediately Gomez motioned for the warmed up Mamoum to replace the tiring Leonardo. As Feyenoord pushed forward again Pardo's loose pass was picked up by Sousa on half way, he immediately found Nilsson who found Mamoum and before Paauwe could get a tackle in the speedy Cameroonian was past him and one on one with Babos where he clipped the ball through the big Hungarian's legs and restored our lead. 2-1 up with just minutes left. As the 90th minute ticked over Feyenoord pushed forward with Pardo finding Verbeek just inside the area, searching for an inch to shoot he was closed down by Lanzaro and Proshyn cleared the ball. Sergio and Nilsson then conjured to play Mamoum through on the right where he was too quick for Jean and Loovens before once more sliding the ball past the oncoming Babos. 3-1 and game over. We brought on Breinburg and Andre Luiz to kill some time but the whistle blew before either would touch the ball. A famous victory and Benny Gomez was ecstatic running wildly onto the pitch and joining the scrum where new cult hero Blaise Mamoum was at the bottom.

Rotterdam, Post-Match Press Conference

Well i don't think anyone expected that when we came here tonight, what do you put that win down to?

Gomez...I expected that. My coaches expected that. My players expected that. We play to win regardless of who we play and tonight we played to win and we won so i am a very proud manager right now!

You pulled another master stroke by holding Mamoum back until you needed goals, were you tempted to bring him on earlier?

The thing was Nilsson was playing an awesome match up front and we simply couldn't take him off. When Mamoum came on he played on the right wing and scored two goals in eight minutes didn't he so he makes me look like the master tactitioner doesn't he. To answer your question - no. I knew we had to be prepared to play a 120 minute football match so i was intent on keeping Mamoum fresh for as long as Nilsson was doing a job a front.

It's MVV's first ever Dutch Cup triumph do you think Maastricht is ready for it?

Sure Maastricht's ready for it. In the three seasons i've been at MVV i've tried to breed a winning culture and i can see that it is really rubbing off on everyone involved with the club. This is the beginning and it's on to Europe next season.

Go and celebrate now Benny.

Thanks i will and i'm sure i'll see you all again this time next year!

MVV First Team Stats - 2006/07

Following an outstanding first season at the club Brazilian Sergio claimed the MVV fan's player of the year award proving his worth in replacing the departing Leonardo with ease. In 33 appearances for the club he scored 12 goals made 8 assists and earned 3 man of the match awards. In other club awards Danny Wintjens claimed the inaugural Coaches Player of the Year (3-2-1 awarded after each competitive match by the coaching staff) with 28 points, ahead of Kalou on 25, Sergio 24, Lanzaro 20 and Proshyn 19. The leading goalscorer was Sergio with 13 ahead of Mamoum with 11, Park 9 and Nilsson 8. Most outstanding young talent was 21 year old Alex Garcia who held down the central defensive midfielder position. Finally Koen Brack was awarded the top team man after a consistent first season in Maastricht playing centre half and right back and scoring 6 goals. Once more Soloman Kalou performed admirably on loan from Feyenoord displaying maturity and consistency beyond his years and he will no doubt go on to bigger and better things back at Feyenoord next season.

Amidst the celebrations in Maastricht following MVV's historic Cup Final victory over Feyenoord - Gomez stood contently just outside the doorway of the town hall on his mobile phone listening calmly and patiently as all those around him smiled gesturing excitedly towards the Colombian.

Just hours earlier the team bus had arrived back in Maastricht and as the doors opened on the official function the players and officials for the first time realised just what they had achieved. The people of Maastricht were out in force and the previously little known names of Blaise Mamoum, Sergio and Danny Wintjens were being lauded with praise and a little bit of star treatment that they would soon become accustomed to. MVV Director of Football John Vranken walked shoulder to shoulder with Benny Gomez as the who's who of Maastricht stood and applauded the two men who'd guided this club to where they are today, following these two the straggling bunch of footballers who'd created the dream on the pitch followed and did they ever lap up their new found attention.

The call had been brief and concise. Like all of Boris' calls actually. Benny was surprised by the emotion in the big man's voice as a proud Boris oulined just how important this first step forward was and he made it perfectly clear that the hardest challenge was still to follow, everyone knew what to expect from MVV now and the league title had to be challenged. It had to be challenged this season!

Gomez... With a generous amount of transfer funds made available and a stadium increase up from ten to fifteen thousand on the way the club is in a very healthy financial position. I plan to utilise the 1.5M euro transfer budget to it's full extent as we set about completing a squad that can take us towards the top four in the Eredivisie this season. With a Uefa Cup competition on the cards a good run and another successful season in the league i see no reason why we cannot push for the Dutch Cup once more this season and then the league title in the 2007/08 season where we will seriously challenge the title and make a power play for the Dutch piece of the pie.
