Robi_ts
until recently i thought my computer was running ok, fair enough it had slowed down since i first bought it, but i thought this down to the odd bit of spyware, cookies, etc etc. i had a neighbour take a closer look and the PC was riddled with infections, trojans, and the hard drive was so fragmented it was knackered. he ran all these programs and got it back to almost new, running SO much faster it was unreal. FM08 ran at twice the speed, so follow the steps to get your PC in tip top shape for the release of 09!!! warning, this can be quite time consuming but well worth the while. i know a lot of users here will know a lot more about computers than i do so probs have implemented a lot of these, but i am aiming at the average Joe user who doesnt know what a firewall is. ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAM. Make sure your antivirus is upto date, i was running an old version of Norton Presuming it was keeping me safe, get rid and download AVG Free v8 http://free.avg.com/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition one of the best anti-virus on the market, it'll keep your comp safe and get rid of existing problems. ANTI-SPYWARE Download both PC Tools Spyware Doctor and Super Anti-spyware and run both on full system scans, delete all entries. Please note, keep running scans till ALL problems deleted. some problems will be detected but not neccessarily deleted at first try. run at least twice!!! when clear, delete Super Anti-spyware, and have Spyware Doctor running resident on your PC (doesnt take up a lot of RAM and performs regular scans) you need 2 as both find different malware! http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/?ref=google_sd&gclid=CMObksLoz5YCFQaB1QodMDLf2Q http://www.superantispyware.com/ PC CLEANER Run ATF-Cleaner to get rid of junk files and unneccesary files on your computer. load up, select "select all" the "empty selected" http://majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html FIREWALL Make sure your windows firewall is turned on, keep out hackers etc. right......... now the important stuff....... Advanced Windows Care v2 a very useful scanner, so perform a scan, that will remove more junk from your PC. a very good registary cleaner. and BEST OF ALL on the "tools" tab at the top of the applicaton there is a "START UP MANAGER" this is excellent, stop all those unnecessary programs starting on windows boot up and using most of your RAM. select ONLY what you need!!! all i have selected is Vista Sidebar, AVG v8 and the PC Tools Spyware Doctor. before i had over 30 programs running on start up!!! http://www.iobit.com/advancedwindowscareper.html Lastly but far from least is the Defragmentation/optimization of you system. very useful and will speed up PC. JK Defrag is very good, simply install and run. i reccommend running repeatedly until you get blocks of green on the drawing/ you'll see what i been, spaced out lines = bad. use regularly, will take a while 1st few times but bear with it!! leave on over night or something!! Also install and use Smart defrag, open the program, select all hard drives, select "DEFRAG & OPTIMIZE" from dropdown menu, and chose start. keep running till report says 0% fragmentation. Both these programs can be ran simultaneously. http://www.kessels.com/Jkdefrag/ http://www.iobit.com/iobitsmartdefrag.html persist with these and your PC will be a lot faster/efficient. Hope i have managed to help some people and not send you all to sleep! good luck and let me know!!!

SlayerX
With people who have Vista there's a danger with using registry cleaners; the registry cleaner basically stops vista in it's track, forcing the need for the user to reinstall Vista. Pope of Pot, King of Nothi
Routers have in-built firewalls. You don't really need commercial application-layer firewalls. Besides, for home use, Windows Firewall is good enough.
