THE LISBON LIONS CHALLENGE

In 1967, Celtic became the first British side to win the European Cup, beating Internazionale 2-1 in the final. Led by legendary manager Jock Stein, the Bhoys played brilliant, attacking football to knock off one of the best defensive teams of all time in the Port, earning themselves the moniker of 'Lisbon Lions'. The extraordinary thing about this side is that every player was born within 30 miles of Celtic's home ground, making them undoubtedly the greatest home grown team of all time. They are still considered the greatest Celtic team of all time and even Sir Alex himself considers Jock Stein to be the greatest Scottish manager ever.

Challenge Objective

- To win the UEFA Champions League with Celtic, witha squad only containing players born within 30 miles of Celtic Park

Challenge Rules

- only players born within 30 miles of Celtic Park can be signed on a transfer, loan or through the youth intake
- players born outside the radius must be sold or have their loan terminated at any opportunity and cannot have their contract or loan period renewed
- players generated in the youth intake that are born outside the radius cannot be signed
- any player born within the radius can be signed regardless from what club they play for or where they started their careers
- the challenge cannot be won if there is still a player born outside the radius in your squad at the time of the Champions League victory

Challenge Guidelines and Optional Rules

- the original Lions played a fast paced, attacking brand of football so doing the same is advised
- the Premiership, Scottish Cup, League Cup and Europa League have no bearing on this challenge and winning them is optional
- focusing on the youth intake is preferred but you can sign regens from other clubs
- it's not mandatory, but having a staff all born within the radius is also advised

The Tierney Clause

Kieran Tierney is the best player in Scotland and a future captain of the club. He was born on the Isle of Man, outside the 30 mile radius, but moved to Glasgow when he was just 10 months old, lived there his whole life, and joined the Celtic set up at age 8. If you choose to make Tierney the only exception to the rule, that is allowed.

The Benefactor Clause

On your quest to greatness, you will drawn in most of the top talent in Scotland and certainly the Glasgow region. Being by far the richest club in Scotland, you can choose to help nurture Scottish football as much as possible. I do this by setting up as many affiliate clubs as possible to send money to as many clubs as possible, as well as almost never negotiating transfer fees for younger players from smaller clubs.

This could be a fun challenge and I wish you good luck with it. Personally the club doesn't appeal to me, seeming a bit to easy domestically. Maybe if you want more people to join the challenge you could expanded beyond Celtic? Any club in Glasgow and 30 miles? Any club in any town? It's your call but I will be following your.. succes/struggles :)

The whole point of this challenge is not to dominate domestically that would be boring but it is to create a Celtic side of purely Scottish nationality which can win the European Cup. That in itself is a challenge considering you will not only have to maintain Celtic's dominance in the Scottish league but to do so with a limited scope of players, there is nothing to stop you from trying a similar save using say Barcelona/Milan/Liverpool or some other big name. For information the last club to win the European Cup (or Champions League) with players from only one country was Steaua Bucharest in 1986.  This is not an easy challenge just winning the cup with Celtic is going to be hard enough.
