  1. 2021/22

First season over, on the face of it 7th place is a good finish for a squad expected to finish midtable. Throughout the entirety of the season we were in with a shout of the automatic promotion places, but as you can see, 16 draws hit us extremely hard. We lacked an out and out goal scorer with all of our strikers going through goal droughts at various points of the season. Where possible I tried to give minutes to some of the more promising youngsters but they weren't quite able to make the step up for the most part.

Given that the team was largely exactly the same as the one I started with I am going to have to undergo a massive squad overhaul to bring down the average age of the squad and bring in some of the youngsters who have been let go by bigger clubs. At the moment it's looking like 80% of the current first team will no longer be with us next season. I have have chosen our GK, CB and RB as the 3 over 30 players we're going to be keeping in the first team next season - the two defenders were actually the 2 best performing players in the league by average rating, so they'll be very important for us as we bring in some younger faces.

In the xg table you can see that actually we have underperformed massively in all departments and by all rights should have won the league. We struggled to put teams to bed, conceding late goals from winning positions or just outright not scoring.

    Youth Intake

The youth intake was fairly decent, labelled a golden generation with a few players there that look like they could one day play for us but they need quite a bit of development time before they step on the pitch.

    Transfers

Not a huge amount of activity so far. On the transfer out we were mainly focussed on getting rid of any of the players over 23 years of age with those leaving being the players who weren’t getting any minutes anyway. It was nice to see our Nike affiliates in India and Swede making moves to loan some of our players.

Only 2 of the transfers in were actually done by me, the rest were set pre-game start. Fabien Windhagen is a young 19 year old striker with decent physicals, released by Frankfurt, at 2 star potential I’m not sure he’s going to go far in the game but he may see some minutes next season. Idrus Abdulahi is a promising 18 year old Australian CM recommended to me thanks to our scouting knowledge from Nike Academy Australia. He saw some minutes in the DLP role in the centre, performing fairly averagely, he has the potential to be Bundesliga 2. standard so with some more minutes next season I’m hoping he can really kick on.

  2. Facilities & Affiliates

Here's a list of all our affiliates, some of the terms of the partnership are different depending on the club. E.g. we have friendlies with the UK Academy but not the Australian one. Each of the clubs are affiliated with the others too with various different rules in place so hopefully we see some AI movement between the clubs too.

In terms of our facilities, it's good for this level but there is still a lot of room for improvement, fingers crossed we get a good intake early on!

    Squad Review

Taking a quick snapshot of the squad by age we can see we've got a lot of players who are too old to be at a club with our philosophy. These will need to be transfers out asap, this might take a transfer window or two to sort out as I'll also have to find their replacements. As you can also see from the youngsters at the club, a lot of them are on loan which isn't ideal as I want to develop players who belong to the club not other club's players. Not too much to shout about really.

    Tactic

I'll be looking to start off with a 4-3-1-2, focusing on high energy, fast attacking football which overloads the middle of the pitch.

  3. The Nike Football Academy: Developing the Next Generation

    Background

The Nike Football Academy was an English football academy funded and administered by Nike. The academy had a revolving squad of unsigned under-20 players and was run with the intention of helping them find a professional club. The academy had long list of future professional players pass through it's doors, including Matty Cash, Tom Rogic, Pontus Almqvist, Abdul Majeed Waris and Anfernee Dijksteel to name a few.

The Academy sadly closed at the end of the 2016–17 season.

This is where we come in! For the 2021-22 season the Nike Academy has been revived and the decision has been taken to move the headquarters to Germany, the ideal breeding ground for young footballing talent.

An 8 club conglomerate spanning all continents has been launched, creating the Nike Academy Football ecosystem. Central to this system, and this career, is Nike Academy Deutschland, to which the best players from the 7 other clubs will go in the hopes of launching them into stardom.

Nations have been picked based on the nationalities of ‘most notable’ players, ensuring that there is a global coverage, including nations who are from the less notable footballing countries. The ultimate aim is to produce professional footballers from these countries who represent their national teams, and to pick up youths released by the big academies and give them a 2nd chance.

As part of the Nike takeover process, clubs have received the following changes to the facilities and structure:

    • 50% boost to junior coaching and youth recruitment for all clubs
    • 50% boost to bank balance
    • Underwriter Sugar Daddy (i.e Nike) - the aim of the German club is to become self-sufficient within 5 years
    • All 8 clubs are now affiliated, with the German club being top of the food chain

    Rules

    • Only 3 players above age 23 allowed - these will be the 'mentors' for the younger players. These will either be players who have developed by the club or veteran elder statesman (age 30+) of the game looking for their last pay check.
    • No signings above 21 years of age - unless it fulfils the criteria above
    • Once a player hits 23 they must be sold or otherwise become one of our 3 designated ‘mentors’
    • If a player receives an offer from a club in a higher division, the bid must be accepted - this is how the success of the Nike Academy System will be determined (not by the trophy cabinet)
    • Transfers will primarily focus on players from the 7 affiliated clubs and players released by bigger academies and clubs throughout the world.

Throughout this save I will be tracking the successes of all the clubs, with a particular focus on Germany. All teams are in playable league so it should hopefully lead to some interesting stories in the future!

    Club intro to follow...

  4. A huge improvement this season, taking 2nd place with 81 points. United were just far too good to even be challenged, we were the only team to beat them all season. Feel like I need the big teams to all have a bad season if we're going to win the title but at least we've got a few more seasons. Champions League next season should be fun, just hope it doesn't affect our league form too much. A nice bonus was seeing Spurs finish bottom in a team which includes Harry Kane!

    Table.thumb.PNG.9b5d5e01484e5c8770fa1b3c41d326a7.PNG

Esposito was the big transfer this summer at £13 million, he finished the season as the leagues top scorer with 30 goals in 38 games. Tang Wan is a promising Chinese wonderkid, hoping he can kick on next year. Lemos adds more strength to our back line depth while Horvath arrived in January to be our backup winger and was a useful rotation option. If we're to have success we need to make sure we can hold on to the player's I've signed, the bigger teams are already sniffing around some of them.

    BARNSLEY - SECOND SEASON REVIEW

We somehow managed to do it! Two promotions in a row.

    2113040219_secondtable.jpg.05fd7ab8c568dedff35b30f8e5be87aa.jpg

No championship though, so no points for the challenge. As you can see, Norwich were just too good.

We did try to bottle it towards the end of the season, but luckily Stoke were better than us at the bottling  They were actually ahead of us with 10 games to go, but proceeded to lose 5 out of the next 6 matches before limping over the line.

The squad stats from clearly a hugely successful season:

    264428869_secondstats.jpg.391e48d195d7b62adb5b20657a8b2d3a.jpg

Alex Mowatt continues his fine form in the Championship as well. I look forward to seeing how our captain does in the Premier league.

Cauley Woodrow finished as top scorer predictably enough, but I have my doubts about him going forward. However he has earned his shot.

Alan Velasco is easily our best player and truth be told I was expecting a bit more from him. But 28  G+A is still good of course. I really hope we can keep him around.

Shout-outs for both the wing backs Yan Couto (again need to try and keep him here) and Josh Tymon who has been developing well and I think can definitely cut it at the top level.

Surprise of the season was Clarke Oduor who continues to out-perform his attributes and has a knack of scoring important goals.

    Bring on the Premier League!

Congrats on the promotion, great work! Squad looks pretty solid, seems to be a bit stronger than the one I had in my promotion year. Norwich look absolutely insane, no chance of a title challenge there!

  6. Season 4 done and dusted. An improvement on last year by 4 points but this time we're top half which was a good accomplishment. The seasons started horribly, after 10 games we had 7 points and I thought we had a relegation battle on our hands, but a few tweaks to our tactical system paid off and we were much better in the second half of the season. Most noticeably we scored more than last season and conceded less and actually finished with a positive goal difference so lots of signs of improvement.

Artigas was the league's top scorer with 25 goals.

Spent quite a bit of money this summer, the biggest fees were for Vignato, a very good Italian winger and Pitacas, a young rock at the back who should have a very big future with the club. Chaparro was a cheap backup option at RB who will challenge for a first team spot next season. Vasquez was a keeper who popped into my inbox randomly but was a star for us this season, a bargain free transfer. Zarate added some dribbling and flair to my midfield, although he does need to improve in some areas. Sutherland was a big purchase for us at £8.25 million but he was so underwhelming, at 6ft 6" I thought he'd be able to dominate in midfield but he was always poor and struggling to stay fit, I think my scouts might have overrated his potential.

Half-way point in the Championship, and it's going really well indeed.

    213981147_champhalf.jpg.d935c882716c44de071b6b9374ded42f.jpg

I know I said I didn't want promotion this season (and a part of me still doesn't), but it will be interesting to see if we can keep this up.

In case we do go up this season, I think it will be a struggle to maintain continuity until an eventual PL title challenge. Nonetheless, best go one step at a time.

No transfers as such in January to speak of, now down to the business end of the season.

It's hard to say no to a promotion when it's on the table, it's a struggle if you go up but you're in a win-win situation. Stay down, you can build the team up, go up and you've got all the riches of the premier league to build your team and an extra season in the top flight.

Seems like you're walking League One!

  8. Our first season in the Premier League is over. Overall not a bad one, safely out of the relegation spots in 14th, had the chance to grab 11th on the final day but lost 3-2 to Wolves. Quite happy with how the season went, managed to stay out of the relegation zone for the entire season with a high of 5th in week 8. Defence was one of the worst in the division which is an obvious cause for concern, feel like I need to get the chequebook out this summer to move us up the table and sort that out.

Season League Position Accumulative Transfer Spend Trophies Challenge Points
    1 League One 1st £179k 1 25
    2 Championship 2nd £1.744 Million 0 25

Didn't spend much on transfers this season. Found it quite difficult to attract the quality required for the Premier League so thought I'd be better off sticking with what I had. A mistake in some ways as our depth in some positions was severely lacking, hoping to get rid of some of the League One/League Two standard players this summer and find some better replacements.

When I did spend money I mostly stuck to young regens. Artigas was the standout at £650k, 18 years old from Malaga and got 15 goals 10 assists in 35 games. Vinicius Jose is a young Brazilian LB with plenty of potential, started at League Two ability but I threw him in the deep end mid season and he held his own and developed nicely. Lecjaks comes in as the number 2 keeper with a view to the future, Castano is a smart young Columbian striker I couldn't say no to for free but needs some work on his physicals, Castello is a good young DLP who hopefully finds his feet a bit next season.

Finances are looking very nice, our wage budget for the year was under £20 million so we've made a huge profit. I've managed to upgrade youth and training facilities a couple of times since last summer as well as junior coaching and youth recruitment. We had a takeover towards the end of the season but no major changes otherwise.

I definitely have the highest hopes from Styles & Tymon in terms of making it all the way to the Premiership. They are both solid young players with a long way to go. Can perhaps add Brittain to that list as well.

Woodrow & Mowatt probably my two best players who will continue to play a key role, but will likely be too old by the time any Premiership challenge comes to fruition.

Will wrap up with the season 2 summer transfers:

    1483083195_transfersseason2.thumb.jpg.74bbeef1e3792b41b060ceb0e483d130.jpg

It's been a challenging summer, because now the aim is to really only find and spend money on players who I am fairly confident will be able to make the step up. And not only play in the Premier League, but be one of the better players there.

We've raided parent club Man City for a few loans, and they also provided us with the transfer I am most excited about in Ivan Ilic (screenshot below). He joins us on a free and I really think he can be a good strong player for us for the remainder of the save.

My aim for this season is to definitely NOT get promoted. Would like a top half finish, maybe flirting with the play-offs.

We need to get in at least another 3-4 potentially top players before we get out of the Championship. This season will hopefully be about scouting & finding them. And improving the club finances and current squad along the way.

Fantastic season in League One, I think you could find yourself challenging near the top of the Championship with that kind of record but totally get that you don't want to be getting promoted too early as it does cause issues with keeping around some pretty poor quality players. Illic looks like a great find!

  10. 2 hours ago, karanhsingh said:

Congratulations Jack great work! How many of your squad do you think will be able to stick around in the premier league for a while?

Thanks! I think I've probably got about 9 player I could keep around, 4 of whom were relegated to league one, although not many who would be first teamers in a title challenging team. Issue is most of my squad is barely championship standard in a lot of areas.

It's proving harder than I thought to recruit better players as I don't want to spend too much until my reputation has improved and the players I buy I want to be clear upgrades on what I've got rather than more of the same.

  11. Wow, what a season! We managed to take 2nd place. We were in the mix for the entire season, with the title going all the way until the last game. We needed Bournemouth to lose or draw, while we faced Nottingham Forest away from home in what was the promotion place decider. We needed a win or draw to hold 2nd and we held our nerve with a great 3-1 win. Had quite a small squad this year and absolutely ran them into the ground, it almost cost us as for the last month or two of the season we were plagued by injured and could barely make an 18 man match day squad.

We also had an impressive FA Cup run where we made it to the semi finals, losing 2-0 to Leicester. We only faced one PL team before the semi (Newcastle) so it was a fairly easy run but a nice money maker and it was fun to dream of winning it for a while!

Loan players were the heroes once again, but Farrugia and Zirkzee turned out to be astute signings who contributed massively. Wouldn't have minded staying down another year to build the squad as we don't have too many worth keeping around if we want to challenge in the Premier League. Focus for the summer is definitely on defence and squad depth.

  12. End of the first season. We made light work of League One as champions. We were top from game week 9 and apart from a small wobble in February continued to dominate almost all of our games. We were a little reliant on some of our loanees, particularly Gelhardt, so I think I have quite a bit of work to do in the transfer market over the summer, we have a £2.3 million transfer budget so hopefully I can find a few gems. Next season will all be about consolidating our position, I don't expect to get near the playoffs.

The cups were fairly uneventful, we made it to the 3rd round of the FA Cup where Man City beat us 5-3.

With transfers I stuck mostly with frees and loans, the one player I paid for not shown is a regen from Boreham Wood who I believe could be our very own Jamie Vardy. Excited about his development. Centre-Back Sam Hughes was my signing of the season, the man was a monster at set pieces and ended the season with 15 goals.

There's obviously something in the water at Rotherham as they've finished 22nd for me too. Would have been interesting to get someone a different, Huddersfield were close.

Anyway, here's the league table and my manager profile. Will update when I have more news...

  14. huge thread, sorry if this has been asked before:

what's the best role combination for 2 strikers? playing a simple but effective 442 with a DLF(S) and an AF(A) who sometimes is a P(A) depending on who plays. what i've understood is that at least one of them has to be a DLF right? for tactical balance sake? and the other striker can just play what role suits him better...? is this correct?

    thanks in advance!

I might be wrong but i believe the general idea is to have one on support and one on attack. The support player will link up with the midfield whilst the attacking player will push forwards. On my 4-4-2 i use Deep-Lying forward on support and an Advanced forward, but i've found that its the deep lying forward getting more of the goals. I suppose it also depends on how your midfield is set up to play.
