  1. I didn't buy FM23 until like March, because I had got so tired of the unrealism that came with all the maxed-out pressing in previous versions. But then I gave it a go and started a test save with Atlético like I usually do. We won La Liga in the first season using a low-block 442 on a cautious mentality the whole year. This would never has happened in the last few versions of the game, so there is hope at last.

What I did was dig into my memory and recreated Simeone's first title-winning tactic from 2013-14 as faithfully as I could (he since then has moved on from the 442 and won the second title with a 532). I didn't even bother with set-pieces, instead left them on default, beacuse I wanted to see if the tactic worked in and itself.

We were not the best defensive team in the league unfortunately, so the system definitely needs more refinement. But we scored the most goals and wasn't even close.

Here's the tactic and the thinking behind it.

    simeone442.png.d06087a8fe50eec289a7a9b37025b3d0.png

Please note that I flipped the sides of the formation compared to Atlético 2013-14 to fit my current players better. Otherwise it's pretty much what they were playing that season. I didn't use any player instructions, no OI's, no set-pieces like I said. We went by training schedules set up by the Assman. Did minimal in-game management. I bought Bennacer in January because I needed to replace Llorente whom I had sold to Tottenham a few days before. Took Santos Borré on loan, because that's the closest version of Diego Costa I could realistically bring in, and then rotated him with Depay at PF (the latter's no PF by any means, but did score a sh*tload of goals). Sold Correa and Morata at the beginning of the season. I would say if this was a proper save, with all the details carefully set up and with constant analysis, we would've done a lot better than we did this way. I'm talking about a difference of 10-15-goals, give or take. Definitely would've conceded less.

So the idea is to let the other team come at us, force them to the flanks, maintain our shape and then aggressively hit them in the mouth, so to speak. In possession, we don't want to aimlessly hoof the ball, instead choose our opportunities, keep the players close to each other, get up the field quickly and in numbers, but don't pass the ball around sideways. We want to be decisive both in and out of possession.

You do need specific types of players for this to work, but Atlético mostly already had them, so I had an easy job implementing this. All players have to have aggression, work rate, concentration and teamwork. At least decent bravery and stamina is a must as well. Your most important players are the GK (you need a very good one), the full-backs (defensively solid, good at going forward, and the WB - the Filipe Luis role - has to have good dribbling too) and the DLF (the Viila/Griezmann role). The DM's (Gabi and Tiago back in the day) need all the concentration, teamwork, work rate and positioning that you can find. The wide midfielders are the ones I've had the most fun with. Sometimes I played opposite footed players there if I wanted them to cut inside more. Other times I just played one or both on his strong side when I wanted to maximise early crosses.

This post is already getting too long, so I have only one thing left to say: Viva El Cholo!

  2. I like the looks of that tactic of yours and am especially curious if you are able to achieve sustained success with that kind of relatively passive low-block in this game. I'm into season 6 on my Strasbourg save and been playing a Simeone-esque mid-to-low-block 442 the whole way. While the results have been decent enough, we have never quite managed to be as defensively solid as I wanted us to be. (truth to be told I signed Lucca and he's just a cheat code as a TF(a))

Your wide combinations look very interesting, what I have found is with any kind of 442, you want one dribbler and one non-dribbler on each flank, it's a nice balance to have. Zero is too conservative, two is too much, most of the cases. Personally I like the WM role, especially if you play an opposite-footed player there. Hit early crosses can provide some great results if you two tall guys up front.

All in all, I will be following this with interest.

  3. I like the look of those training schedules. Will be interested to follow how they do for you. The early results are certinly promising! If I may have one other suggestion, consider to include transition sessions from time to time. Like the Tifo video states, tactical periodisation does look at transitions as basically half of the game. Those two sessions not only  work on some absolutely vital attributes, they are very efficient in the way that they pay equal attention to both units. I personally never go without them.

On this, do you then have schedules for weeks where you think you'll need to defend more?

Yes I do, but it's not a wholesale change or anything like that. It's things like replacing attacking shadow play with defensive shadow play, having defending disengaged and/or defending wide on Thursdays, or occasionally doubling down on a select defensive section.

    49 minutes ago, _Ben_ said:

I like to do this, too. A full day of rest on either the Sunday (Sat game) or Monday (Sun game).

Not even recovery or match review for me either.

    49 minutes ago, _Ben_ said:

Have you ever used the match review? I think it can only be used on the day following the game so your first point may answer that one. I don't actually know how much impact it has but kind of saw it as a sit down kind of session, watching and analysing the game and each player's role within it.

I believe its impact is minimal and doesn't involve anything other than cohesion and familiarity, so I find it useless when your players have thos already on an acceptable level.

    49 minutes ago, _Ben_ said:

I really like the crossover in thinking that physical =/= the actual physical block. Do you find that team sessions are generally more intense than units? Any feedback on injuries because you can, literally, track the injury occurrences to the day.

I think it totally depends on the session itself. The general sessions tend work on more attributes and so usually are more intense. But not at an equal rate. Physical and Outfield are obviously the most intense of these, while Tactical (all mental attributes) not so much. I also think that Defending Engaged is more intense for the defensive unit than, say, the Tactical general training. The attention the given unit gets, combined with the number of attributes worked on, AND these attributes themselves determine the intensity (Aggression and Work rate are probably not equal to vision and flair). Note: these points are not officially confirmed, they're just my general experience. Other then sheer bad luck, which you can't do anything about, longer-term injuries have mostly ocurred for me when I didn't adjust the workload for later parts of the season. No physical training and fewer three-a-days are my go-to rules here. The other one to monitor is injury risk, if it's still high by the middle of the week, I put the player on half intensity or give him a rest.

    49 minutes ago, _Ben_ said:

Interesting and I really hadn't thought of this really. I tend to use all five blocks for each match, kind of in the 'worry' that it'll lose effectiveness. Do you know the length of time that a match prep block is 'active' for - because the idea of sharing them out over the week(s) is way more realistic.

Do you look for a 'target' in the cohesion and familiarity or just wait for it to fill? How do you evolve the schedules at the start of the season to make room for the extra blocks required?

There has been some confusion on this one because of the UI, but I think SI have confirmed that match prep sessions are 'active' for the upcoming match and the upcoming match only. Once it's played, they're 'gone'.

The entire pre-season is for cohesion and familiarity for me, that is after a week of "boot camp". General sessions and a bunch of friendlies, team bonding most weeks, match reviews etc. I go all in. If cohesion is at least good, I'm happy, it's not realistic to aim higher if you're new to a club. As for tactical familiarity, I want everything fluid, except for P/R/D which takes more time to max out.

    49 minutes ago, _Ben_ said:

I love this idea and it's one that I really follow - using the non-match prep schedules because improving the attributes key to your style will improve the performances on the pitch, even if these don't necessarily correlate to the next match.

That being said, if you don't really have a firm playing style and a club DNA, having a bunch of these sessions that train individual roles and then having the players on role training with widespread attributes (say BBM, RPM, CF) can be mighty effective for overall youth development.

    49 minutes ago, _Ben_ said:

Do you create these or delegate?

I do create them. It's actually a lot easier, because with the U18s, I really don't bother with match prep. It's all about attribute training, so I don't really change the schedule very often.

    Thanks.

I enjoyed the Tifo video and took a lot from it but I've struggled implementing it into a week with more than once match without them just becoming Match Prep weeks. I'd love to see your take on this and share some ideas - feel free to send me a DM if you'd rather it was outside the confines of this thread.

Here's a sample schedule I've created for the second part of the season (thus there's no downright physical training) and for week when we play a team we want to attack.

    1708166088_trainingschedule.thumb.png.0d1a6796a63cf5aee5a57d056d0fd4c6.png

    Notes:

    * after our previous game last Saturday, the players got Sunday off. I don't want them near the facility.

    * Monday is for active recovery. There are some light sessions, nothing too heavy, in order to ease the fatigue still stemming from the previous match.

    * Tuesday is a day for units training and for some sub-principles I want to practice for the upcoming match. The main physical focus here is strength and by that I don't mean weight training in the gym, more like drills where players have to turn, shoot or tackle.

    * Wednesday's sessions are mostly performed as a team and this is the day for our main principles (in this case a solid but active defensive style). The overall workload is by far the heaviest, with the dominant physical focus being endurance (and most importantly, work rate).

    * Thursday is similar to Tuesday, as we practice some sub-principles, but, nearing the game, it's considerably lighter. Speed is the focus here, not so much as in running speed, but more so as in thinking fast. For this day, I try to choose sessions that concentrate on the most important mental attributes (like anticipation, concentration and decisions), as well as some that require the players to do some sprinting. I change these on a weekly basis, according to what's best for the upcoming game.

    * Friday is for full-on match preparation. I don't use match preview, match tactics, or match practice outside of the pre-season, since, ideally, we've already achieved a good level of team cohesion and tactical familiarity.

    * You are right that it's impossible to get a proper training week in when we have two games. What I do is have three match prep sessions for the two games combined and distribute them how I see fit for the actual game, and then have some set-piece training (which still do work some really key attributes) along with the occasional Ball retention, Chance conversion, aerial or ground defence. All of these last four deal with key attributes for the given unit and do individual role training for the other. It creates a nice balance, because I tend to select sessions that specifically focus on key attributes for all units on a full training week.

    * Pre-season training is all-about getting ready physically and tactically.

    * Youth training tends to be heavier, with more physical sessions used.

  6. Adapting the principles and methods of tactical periodisation to FM is certainly worth exploring, something I've been experimenting with on my save as well. I'm not sure if you can link outside pages here, but there is an in-depth analysis on the topic at the popular tactics website with the very long German name. Besides optimizing the training workload to enhance efficient match preparation, tactical periodisation also puts great emphasis on 1) which physical attributes (speed, strength, endurance) get the focus on the given training day, 2) whether the focus of the day is training the entire squad (11 on 11) or units and 3) if the team's main principles and playing styles are being practiced or there's more specific attention to various sub-principles which can be important for the upcoming match. All of these can be translated to FM's training modul fairly well. I've been having some success using these methods: I'm usually getting high training ratings and my young players are developing nicely. Obviously, as the season progresses it is advisible the adjust the workload accordingly, but this indeed is a great method for avoiding injuries, developing key attributes and always being prepared for games.

    2022-23 PRE-SEASON

    Transfers:

    Pre-arranged transfers in:

    And the rest:

I'm only signing youngsters now, because every Russian player who's an upgrade on what we have, is out of reach. And there aren't too many of them anyway.

We got decent money for some fringe players from other Russian clubs. As for the foreigners, Ponce is gone and Larsson has a transfer arranged for January. No one seems to want Orunov and Guus Til (myself included), but I'll surely get rid of them somehow. That leaves Ayrton Lucas, Alex Kral and Jorrit Hendrix. All of them have two years left on their contracts which expire in June 2024. There are all core players for us, too. I either let their contracts run out and win the league two more times (boosting our reputation and getting CL money) or I sell them this January for a good fee. If I wait till next summer, it's dubious I can keep my asking price high enough, since then they'll only have 1 year left on their contract. I've already seen that with Larsson and Til. We don't need the money right now. Facilities are almost maxed out and we currently have 70m available for buying 16-year-olds. Besides Chalov, the two Miranchuk's, Oblyakov and maaaybe Utkin, I'm not interested in any of the established Russian players, because they won't make us considerably better. Utkin is the only of these who's at least remotely interested in joining us and he's not worth his asking price.

Tough decision. I've started giving minutes to our most promising youngsters, but they are definitely not good enough yet, not even for the RPL. Some of them might be ready in 2024.

    In the meantime:

Once again, not one team that's not distinctly ahead us when it comes to overall quality, but it's at least slightly better than last year's horror-show. (Speaking of which, Red Star Belgrade drew the exact same teams like we did last year, I mean what's up with that?) I will have to go all tactical against these teams, analysing, preparing, adjusting tactics, otherwise we stand no chance. We'll see how far that takes us. I want us to have at least 4 or 5 points this year.

The emergence of Glushenkov (who had been loaned out)  is the main story here.

    glushenkov.thumb.png.661b6e52fa8f819a9b4bd5468e0b1fb5.png

He's no world beater by any means, but has good attributes at all the right places, has consistency and, most importantly, has a Russian passport. I gave him a chance and he took it. His offensive numbers are better than anyone we've had at the striker position.

Elsewhere, Yevgenjev has been as good as expected, and he even scored 11 goals off set pieces. He's a man among boys.

We sold Kutepov during the winter break. He's a good CB, but was no more than a squad player for us, and so I wasn't going reject a 7.5m bid from Krasnodar. We used that money to pick up Glebov from Rostov and he has actually outperformed Umyarov. He looks like a good signing.

    glebov.thumb.png.48f28906b034bd0f05672333f9043239.png

Karavaev has been worth his transfer fee as well. We have a strong team right now, and it's time to integrate our most promising youngsters. Sadly, our B-team got relegated from the FNL, so our player development plans took a big time hit. Also, the inevitable departure of Ayrton Lucas looms large, as there is no Russian LWB currently who can come close to his abilities.

We kept focused and went onto a long winning streak. The key game was against Dynamo who were our main challengers this year. We played our new 451 tactic and we bossed the game while having 37% possession.

We won it with a higher point total than last year. We also won the cup this time around, and although it took two penalty shootouts to get there, it was well deserved.

Truth to be told, we kind of suck right now. I've been experimenting with tactics quite a lot lately, but that's no excuse for dropping that many points in the league. The Dynamo game, in particular, was unacceptable, although the manager did perhaps choose the wrong time to try out a Wide Target Man system... As for the CL, we never really were in the Bayern game, but did well against Inter, a match we didn't deserve to lose. Then we actually flat out outplayed Barcelona and should have, for all intents and purposes, won that game. Based on that one sample, our 451 counter attack tactic is worth further exploring.

It's a three-horse race, and both Zenit and Dynamo look very strong this year. We gotta bring our A-game from now on.

Well done winning the league. I am surprised you managed to get Yevgenev and Karaveev from rival clubs at decent fees! You must tell me how you did it, I went up to 60 million for Yevgenev on my save over a period of 4 seasons and was always flatly rejected, not even the hint of a negotiation

    Thanks.

I was constantly on the lookout for Yevgeneev, asking his agent every two weeks, like the crazy stalker that I am. I swooped in the right time, when we were 1st and Dynamo 7th, so he didn't care that much about the rivalry. Also, they had some financial problems, at one point in the summer, all of their first team players were transfer listed, something I haven't seen before.

As for Karaveev, Zenit brought in Aurier to play right back for them, so I guess he became expendable.

We won the Super Cup in an incredibly tight match. We started okay in the league, but we are not playing especially well. I continue to attribute that to the lack of true goalscoring presence up front. That said, I started to develop a new tactic, which is a 42211 with two DM's. It looked good in a friendly against Monaco, but it's obviously way too defensive for the RPL. I intend to spend this autumn working on two striker systems, because quite simply none of our strikers is good enough to play alone up front.

    League table:

CSKA are very strong once again and they made it to the CL Group Stage through the qualifiers. Them and Zenit (who just spent a sh*tload of money on new players) look like our  primary challengers.

    Speaking of the CL:

Yeah, well. This will be a great opportunity to work on a counter-attacking system. Can we get just 1 point? We'll see.

    Notable transfers:

    rochaout.png.6c7c1cb4666660bf2de5c6783143d5f5.png

Decent fee for a player with no future with us.

    karavaev.thumb.png.1f11117e309abf791594dcd932254f6f.png

Russian international joins from Zenit for 8.25m. We needed a WB on the right, because I'm not ready to change the tactic just yet. He's surely an upgrade on Moses.

    chery.thumb.png.14cb81668a85dd96e281e55ad7b60614.png

We also loaned Cheryshev from Valencia. We're paying a 100k monthly fee and half of his wages. He can cover for Lucas at left WB (we didn't have any alternatives at that position) and can play at forward too.

Our biggest concern, as mentioned, is still at the striker position. I was unable to recruit any Russian player who's an upgrade on what we currently have. Out of sheer desperation, I offered a transfer fee that could reach 27m for Fedor Chalov, but he wasn't interested in joining us. I even tried to loan Kokorin from Fiorentina and he too wasn't interested. For the lack of a better option, I probably have to come up with a tactical solution for this and come up with one soon.

I also succesfully bid for Atalanta's Miranchuk, but he chose Leverkusen. He's not especially my type of player, but his technical ability would've dominated the RPL in a tactic built around his passing. Too bad,

I like the Russian only profile, but why not naturalize the South Americans?

That's a good thought and something to consider. They have to play in Russia for 6 continuous years for that. Neither Rocha, nor Ponce (who have 2 and 4 years left, respectively) is good enough to be worth the trouble. As for Lucas, I've thought about it. He has three and a half years remaining though, which is beyond his current contract. I would have to make him a star player which he kind of is - for now, but he's not someone who can start for a Champions League winning team.

Ultimately, I think it wouldn't feel quite right.

    FOREIGN PLAYERS UPDATE

We have seven non-Russian players remaining at the club, and there is interest for almost all of them.

    kral.thumb.png.d6bf56368ae641cd070a624cdd76a52c.png

I really like Kral. He has been playing BPD for us, but he's also adept at Libero or as a DM or CM(d). Some lowball offers already came in which were promptly rejected. I intend to keep him until January at least. Champions League football will drive up his value.

    hendrix.thumb.png.57b6cdc013d80ba02fe88e3ef24c71b8.png

Hendrix is our starting Libero on ridiculous wages. (For comparison's sake, we paid more than 4m for one year of Victor Moses, who is not very good.) Inevitably, he has recently come to me asking for a new contract. I wanted to tell him we're not giving new contracts for non-Russian players anymore, but I didn't have that option. So now he's unhappy. If a good offer comes in, I'll let him go, even though he's one of our best players.

    larsson.thumb.png.2bea94ce8a0f11427af2518f16eebe2a.png

Larsson is not quite good enough for this team and hasn't been playing especially well. He has the speed and other attributes to play AF, though, and our lack of forward depth makes me really think twice about this one. And it's not just our club, mind. Russia has an abundance of great defenders and midfielders, but not many good strikers right now. With the exception of Fedor Chalov (who's not interested in joining us) and a bunch of target man types, there is no one I could sign right now and say I've just made our team considerably better.

    ponce.thumb.png.6eb81994b71fe47b1be3760d8171151e.png

On a related note, Ponce played striker for us in the second half on last season, and I'm almost certain that had I not replaced Sobolev with him, we wouldn't have won the title. He's the only one with no interest from other clubs so far, so he stays. We need him too.

    oton.thumb.png.e6263078b6fc00585c08faffd64c84c7.png

I have been trying O'runov at right wing-back since Moses left. He's not very good, but has recently got injured, so I guess he stays for a little longer.

    rocha.thumb.png.13158cfe925fbe6bd8469fd6dfdf7852.png

I like Rocha's semi-decent defensive attributes and more than decent teamwork, but ultimately he's no more than a useful squad player for us. Once again, since we're paper-thin at forward, especially when it comes to Russian nationals, I'm a bit reluctant to sell him until we can get some depth up front. A good offer can change my mind.

I simply can't replace Lucas right now. If he goes, we'll have to abandon the 523 system.

We also have Guus Til on a 2-year loan at Freiburg which expires at the end of the season. He certainly won't need to rent an apartment in Moscow.

    More news from nowhere:

I have a feeling it's a state-owned telecommunications company.. We'll take the money, though, it almost tripled our bank balance.

    We're getting there.

We won the league, guys. Way to aim high. Although this might turn out to be a transitional season for our club, in which case it's more than realistic.

I already wrote about Yevgnejev and Pletnev.

I looked through the 2021 youth intakes of the bigger Russian clubs and Semka is one the very greatest of all youngsters coming through this year. With good fundamentals and already elite speed at the age of 15, he has every chance to become a perennial Russian international in the future. And that is the kind we will be collecting.

I also appointed Vadim Romantsev, who I think is son of Oleg, as B Team Manager. If he's half the coach his father was, Spartak-2 is set for the foreseeable future.

I am going to have him work on it.....other wise I will move him back to AMC-AP/MC-CMA in the current system.  I like his flair and shooting ability....

With that off the ball, first touch and finishing, he can be absolutely lethal as a lone striker. He just needs to do sprints every day at training for the next 12 months or so...

    2020-21 END-OF-SEASON PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS

Our tackle win rate continues to be a concern. Otherwise, we were great at the areas I want us to be.

I revised the formula for calculating defensive actions and it now considers fouls made, too. I went back and forth on this one, because it probably includes handballs and pushes at attacking set-pieces, but I've concluded that these two are few and far inbetween to really skew the numbers. Ideally, I would go with tackles attempted instead of tackles made, but, sadly, the game doesn't count that one, at least for me all the numbers are zero.

    Some takeaways:

Ponce justified my decision of putting him in the starting 11, scoring goals and being efficient. I'm now tempted to keep him for another year, despite him being Argentinian, because we are really short of goalscorers. Bakaev is great, but he's no striker and his high xG/shot has a lot to do with him being our designated penalty-taker.

Speaking of Bakaev, his consistently strong defensive numbers suggest he's viable at wide midfield too, should we decide to change the system.

Suleimanov looks like a good signing, but a series of smaller injuries took away from his impact. He needs to stay on the field.

    Zobnin continues to be irreplaceable.

Young Pavel Maslov played well as a Libero in limited minutes, but his lack of physicality and natural fitness puts his usability for other defensive roles in serious doubt.

In the end, the title race proved to be largely anti-climatic. Thanks to some odd scheduling and CSKA kind of imploding, we went into the Tambov game already crowned as champions. Once I learned, however, that surging city rivals Dynamo were going to play a 4231 gegenpress against us (which seems to be the, ahem, go-to tactic this year), I got into this weird competitive streak . I played my first 11 and we put on a counter-attacking clinic. Lower LOE, attacking mentality, a few changes in duties, it was a joy to watch. Definitely the game of the season tactically. Then, as a reward, I kind of let the boys loose against Krasnodar. We went all-out of attack for this last game. I hope they enjoyed it (I didn't) because it won't happen too often.
