  1. I'm sure it's been addressed before, but does anybody know exactly how these work, and what sort of teams are suitable for the instructions.

Logic would suggest that 'expressive' is for better teams, 'disciplined' is for worse teams. Based on the below, I imagine if your team has players with good vision, flair and off the ball, the expressive setting may work nicely:

    image.png.b78132f8ef5d816e8ca534656f7cbd96.png

    But what about discipline?

    image.png.70c8ee03ae8ed2f8c46b8b684debe8f1.png

I'm not entirely sure what this actually does. If your team shape is already fluid with a lot of attacking players, lots of roaming, etc. then telling the players to stick to that tactical shape will not make them robust, surely.

I tend to use 'expressive' when I need a goal and have completely run out of ideas! But I'm never sure when to use the other one, as I have no idea what it actually does.

    Any ideas?

I just don't understand why they remove the ability to assign an 'assignment' to a scout instead of this focus system and yet still left the 'scout assignments' option on the menu!

I think you can still do it yourself manually, but I would have thought that if you left it as 'assign any scouts,' your chief scout wouldn't be silly enough to keep giving additional assignments to already busy scouts. Nor that, even if you were to do that, it would then completely ruin the original assignment to the point you have to delete and re-create it. I really like the idea of being able to create multiple focuses easily, it just doesn't work particularly well at the moment, as far as I can tell

  3. It looks like it should work so much better than it actually does. I've tried several ways of setting up scouting (lots of shorter focuses vs long-term ongoing focuses) and none of them seem to work very well.

Also, if you set several ongoing assignments, the game doesn't seem to handle the setting of short-term focuses well. My scouts on ongoing assignments routinely get assigned to the short term focuses, too, which seems to cancel/indefinitely pause the ongoing assignment. I hope this is something that they fix asap.

  4. That all makes a lot of sense, thanks guys. I changed the striker's training so that it matched his role, and he seemed to start performing much better. He was ok originally, but it looks like there's been a big improvement (unless it's coincidence, or just confirmation bias). I'll be looking to match the training to the role used in the tactic from now on

  5. I'm currently playing Jesus as a DLF(S) in my tactic, but I have him training the attributes for CF(s). As such, his 'Position/Role/Duty' familiarity appears to be really bad. Does this actually make a difference in game? I haven't noticed him performing especially badly, but the game tells me that he is having a negative impact on tactical cohesion.

Does anybody know if this is actually a problem, or if it can be safely ignored?

What I believe is true is that Invite crosses tells defenders to stand off and sit narrower. Stop crosses mean they challenge the ball in wide areas.

If it were just that instruction, that would have been my assumption, too. But then we also have 'trap inside' or 'trap outside.' I assume that 'trap outside' means that the defenders should sit narrower. Which would surely mean that 'trap outside' and 'invite crosses' do essentially the same things, but I can't imagine that's the case.

I like the facts that we have more options, it would just be really helpful to know what each of them mean!

  7. How much does everyone use the new specific defending instructions? And how effective are you finding them?

Also, does anybody know specifically what the defender is asked to do with either of these instructions?

    image.png.c4e1c2859d6df52bde0142c5572035d6.png

Stopping/inviting crosses could mean several things which aren't made too clear in the description. Is the defender being told to show the winger onto his weaker/stronger foot? Is he being told to show a right winger onto left foot/right foot? Is the defender being told to close down/stand off the winger? It isn't massively clear from the instruction.

I like the idea of the new instructions, they (in theory) mean that your defensive style can be tailored a little more than previously. But I would like to know what I'm actually asking the defence to do in these scenarios, above just saying 'let them cross.'

  8. The revamped scouting area in FM23 looks really good, but it's left me unsure how to set up scouting assignments optimally.

Previously, I would send each scout to a nation/region, leave them there, and never touch it again.

In FM23, however, looks like it is encouraging players to use several shorter-term scouting focuses.

Has anybody got any tips on how to best set up a scouting team? Has anybody found a strategy/focus that helps find young unknown players/newgens?

Doesn't have to be "full three years", he just needs to be on the books (and not out on loan) for the 3 seasons. As long as a player is registered at the club before his 19th birthday he'll qualify (if not loaned out at all), even if signed in January of the first season.

I see--and it doesn't matter if he turns 21 during season number three, as long as at some point during season three he was registered and under 21?

  10. I'm sure this has been answered somewhere else, but I can't find it.

The game states that, in order to be home grown, the player needs to have played in the nation/at the club for three years 'before 21st birthday.'

That would suggest that you would have to sign a player at 17 years of age in order to guarantee it. Anybody signed that has already turned 18 would not get the full three years 'before 21st birthday.' That cannot be the case because I have signed several 18 year olds who have achieved home grown status.

Does anybody know exactly when you have to sign a player to guarantee home grown, as it cannot possibly be what the game describes?

    Cheers.

    EDIT:

So to give an example of this working rather strangely, I signed a player on the 1 January 2022, and he is due to be 'home grown' on the 28 June 2024. He turns 21 on the 4 April.

    image.png.5bdc0f7ed9ac0f55ae6ef0bc2bd7389e.png

    image.thumb.png.d915ecc82c2976379f5833f214cefc14.png

    image.png.a8d37549901ff167f4ba828047fcfd0f.png

So he turns 21 having only been at the club for two years and three months, and becomes home grown after that, having only been at the club for roughly two and a half years.

Is there an explanation for how this actually works?

    Thanks again

  12. In theory, there's no reason that you can't just pick one tactic and leave it at that. However, I imagine it would be difficult for any team, either in real life or on football manager, to keep the same tactic from League One to the Premier League and expect success. Particularly a heavy gegenpress, which is probably more suitable for the better clubs in the league. Perhaps a tactic that is a little more balanced might be a good idea--possibly the 'control possession' one, which isn't quite as heavy on the pressing intensity and tempo. Really depends on the players you have in the squad, but I think a gegenpress for a team that is one of the weakest in the league might be too much.

Remember that you can have your team train three tactics at the same time. If you want to keep things simple, maybe have your team train three pre-sets that you can switch to during the match if it isn't going your way?

Having said all that, 10th and 13th really aren't that bad for a recently promoted side with no major upgrade in personnel, so you're still doing well!

Personality of youth coaching staff will help this and be able to help in the future etc. Can you send some screenshots of your staff or post their personalities out of interest?

    This is my HOYD:

In terms of the U18 coaching staff, 'balanced' is the worst personality I have. A couple have 'fairly determined,' and one of them is a 'perfectionist.' So that player is a real outlier!

  14. Thanks for the replies.

I disagree with this point. Normally my best young players are moved into the first team but they only play matches for the sub teams. This way they do the mentoring with older players but they still play matches with their colleagues from the same age. I play FM 21, so I don´t know if this changed in 22.

Concerning mentoring, do you always have somebody with 'significant' influence on the group in your groups, or is 'average' enough as long as they have a good personality?

  15. I have just had my youth intake, and I've been given an incredible young player. League One standard immediately, with five star potential. However, his personality is 'low determination,' and his determination is 4:

    image.thumb.png.791d47cf9238b8e7c11c482b232b374c.png

For young players, I know training is more important than game time, so I don't want to immediately put him in my first team just so that he can go into a mentoring group.

So, what is the best way of going about increasing his determination, and sorting out his atrocious personality?

  16. In what circumstances would you want certain finishing traits? I've never really tried to get strikers to learn these, because I'm not sure which traits are best for which players. E.g. when would you want a player to have 'shoots with power' rather than 'places shots,' and vice versa?

  17. As per the topic, is there any benefit to refusing the invitation to join the U23 league (playing in England, not sure if it applies elsewhere, too)?

I tend to loan out most of my players when they hit 18 but are still not good enough for the first team. That tends to leave me with almost nobody in the U23 team, and so they do terribly in the U23 league. Would there be any benefit to refusing to join the U23 league, and perhaps just schedule some friendlies for the U23 team when you need match fitness?

That's pretty interesting, maybe they don't? I see something like Eccentricity as a personality thing, you're either eccentric or not, not really something that can be trained into a player. Maybe it's the same for the tenancies

I though exactly this--I treated eccentricity as a personality, and the tendencies as player traits, rather than regular attributes. The only thing that confused me was that the 'Sweeping' training specifically says that it targets the rushing out tendency. I think I'll just stick with the distribution training, that seems to have worked wonders!

  19. I've got a fantastic young prospect goalkeeper who I want to try to train as more of a sweeper keeper than a normal goalkeeper. I put him on specific training for distribution, which has worked fantastically (+4, +5 and +7 in those attributes). However, looking at his attribute progress, I can see that certain attributes, especially those labelled 'tendencies,' aren't improving/increasing at all:

    image.thumb.png.ab8128a929cd28261fd1d75b17a9750d.png

'Flair' and 'Off the ball' haven't improved, but I wouldn't necessarily expect that from a keeper.

Additionally, 'Eccentricity' hasn't improved, and neither have the 'tendencies.'

The 'GK Sweeping' training suggests that it works on 'rushing out (tendency)' but there hasn't been any movement whatsoever.

Has anybody seen any improvements in those attributes?
