  1. 37 years old and bought every single version since cm93. But for the first time ever I have opted out of buying this version after playing the demo.

The game and especially the dreadful match engine has become so stagnant and quite frankly boring to play. I literally feel I'm playing full retail for essentially a data update.

I hate hearing mile's boasting about how many people are playing FM is quite simply because there isn't another football management simulation out there ! Everyone who's a football fan loves the idea of playing a football management game and that's quite literally our only option.

Don't get me wrong FM has bought me years of joy and frustration but above all immersion. But I find myself so bored of it now. Literally exactly the Same game for the last 10 year's basically. And it's the match engine itself for me is the biggest let down.  It's just so boring and quite frankly cringing to watch at times.

I yearn to get into a good game of FM. But trying this latest version I just know it won't happen and that actually kills me !

  2. Tried the demo but the match engine is as bland as ever.

Nobody goes on mazey run's and beats 2 or 3 player's.

    No 1'2s

    No rounding keepers

No inside winger / forward ever cut in and in swing a cross ..or hit a shot on there strong foot

No finishes or shots are ever curled in . Everything is hit straight with laces

Woodwork hit about 8 times a game

Goalies look to small in goals and have horrible animation's.

Every header at goal goes on or ends up as the same repetitive animation. Header goes straight above goalie head and he just grabs it out the air

Never see a goalie tip a shot over the bar

Boring . Repetitive. Just plain boring to watch. Every goal is the same

  3. I think most will agree the definitive version that really made cm/FM ride to the top was cm01/02 .. and why? And that was with plenty of other footie management Sims available that had fancy graphics . Cm was literally text only ! But was still the best .Half the world you played in was made up in your imagination! No silly Boring repetitive press conferences or player chats or 25 different roles for one position (actually true nearly when you combine mentality and role's) etc..

Now of course the game has evolved mostly for the better. But it really has killed it for me how bad the match engine plays out on 3d.

  4. 37 yr old football fanatic. Having bought every single version since cm93. On release day without fail.

And for the first time ever after trying the demo that won't be happening which absolutely kills me.

I simply hate the 3d engine. It's cringing to watch. It plays out horribly. It's so primitive I simply just can't get into it whatsoever.

Now I know the 2d is still available but they have given that no attention whatsoever. It's so bland and boring. There's zero graphics or immersion to it. It could literally be a game going on a park. Or a world cup final there's zero difference.

I love playing on 2d as I prefer to fill in the blanks with my imagination rather than actually watch it play out in such a robotic horrible manner ( that just isn't anything like real football)

Go and have a look at FM 12 . The 2d actually looked lovely! Ok the engine itself may of had issues but asthetiically it looked 10x better than today's version!

    Why???

I  really wish si had some competition. I yearn to get into a good football management simulation but FM just doesn't do it for me anymore ☹️

The ME hasn't improved enough recently and I think maybe people are starting to get a bit fed up with it. I get a free key for FM every year but then purchase it because I want to support the game... this is the first year I just say enough is enough. I won't play it or buy it with the ME in it's current state. As far as I'm concerned the only thing that will ever get me buying FM again is a heavily improved ME. I just don't understand why the ME has such little focus... do they really think no-one cares? I mean a lot of us still watch in 2D, we just want to see a variety of play/logical decision making. I want to feel like I'm watching a game of football, I don't care about graphics per se. I don't care if it's dots or fully fleshed out footballers. It means nothing to me if the graphics look crisp and the movements are fluid if I get 10 1v1s a game and my inside forwards never square the ball. There is just no immersion for me with the ME in it's current state. God I'm so disappointed this year. I long for the iteration where SI finally advertise and market a vastly improved ME, I'd be so hyped to feel like I'm actually watching football.

    Amen to that

  6. No idea how old you guys are but I even remember cm95 ( I think) had a photo of every single football league clubs stadium and would show up as the background on that matchday. Great little touch.

My whole point in this post I am so disappointed in this current versions engine I really am. Not results. Just the way it plays out. Its really shoddy.

I feel cosmetically this game hasn't evolved barely in 10 years. I actually enjoyed 19 and now 20 I genuinely feel is for me unplayable. And I've been charged 10pounds more than usual for I think a worse product now.

I'm with the OP, FM12 was the last time I had fun on FM at all levels long term with all the teams I managed (I did have a couple good careers in FM15 and 18 but I struggled to enjoy those versions with some other teams). Sure, FM12 had a huge exploit, but something went off with the major game re-write for FM13 that never came back, and is hard to exactly express what it was.

Maybe I just like my game easy, idk. Sue me for that, I play games to relax and enjoy myself, not to get consistently frustrated at a computer. The reality is every single version since at some stage really frustrated me, and FM20 is starting to go up there as one of the most frustrating so far, if not the single most frustrating one. I just don't understand the match engine as it is, and it doesn't give me the consistent feedback I expect from the instructions I hand out to the players. It's a bit odd because on the beta I played with Lyon and it was vaguely fun if not quite playing exactly as I expected from the players, but playing lower league it's been an absolute nightmare.

Lower league in FM20 is all over the shop, players make ridiculous decisions and there's insane patterns of play, in some matches I'll give away 7 one on ones and they miss all of them only to score from a long shot; in other matches they'll have a single one on one and score from them. Inside forwards don't score, don't provide cutbacks, only shoot from the sideline. Wide players on support duties score more than players on attack duties. Central advanced playmakers and deep strikers are utterly ignored in build-up, so you cannot build systems based on the creativity of such players. There are tons of long through balls or hoof ups that result in clear chances, and very few short through balls unless the AI goes very attacking and gives space. Fullbacks attack wildly even on defend duty. Wingbacks come inside way too much, win the byline crazy easily, and provide cutbacks better than inside forwards. Nobody crosses the ball. Shooting on the first touch (crosses, volleys, rebounds) is far more accurate than after actually controlling the ball first. Morale/motivation seems overpowered with huge swings of form in response, and behaves very strangely, players complacent on big matches, responding unpredictably. Results seem to come more from flashes of inspiration of players than from tactical instructions.

Unfortunately I cannot go back to FM12 because all the other quality of life improvements in the game since (everything not related to the match engine) are indispensable. I really did try a couple of years ago but there were too many repetitive clicks that aren't in later versions, and worse, the game crashed a few times in my system. There's some features in later MEs that I have to admit I like a lot, I'm not a fan of the old sliders, and lots of the new roles that have been introduced since are nice, the options for pressing and playing from the back are great, etc. But it's not fun overall.

I'm honestly thinking of abandoning FM for a while or permanently (after about 10 years of playing it almost all the time!!), it is a huge time sink in what's ultimately an unproductive hobby (I could be using my free time to advance my coding skills instead, or learning a language, etc etc), and it doesn't even feel fun anymore. Why play games when you're an adult and don't even enjoy them.

You literally sum this up brilliantly

  8. For starters yes it looks better! That in itself is totally wrong for a game at years prior.

Secondly playing just a few games I saw some really lovely variations in goals. Playmakers going past people sliding ball into a striker for him to crisply drill the ball into the net. It looks really nice. This literally never happens on 20. Goals from set pieces, crosses. The way the ball is knocked around. It just feels better, smoother. A striker going through 1v1 feeling its probably gonna be a goal rather than knowing 9/10 it isn't gonna be a goal. I enjoyed playing just a few matches last night on 12 than I did a single one on 20.

I still haven't heard one answer yet why they did away with the 2d wuth the stands and shadow and enhanced graphics. And simply left us with a very primitive 2d version

  9. I'm not. Going by the 20 feedback post on the forum there are soooo many people on there fuming with the state of the current engine. I just wanted to open people's eyes abit as I think we all become abit blind to it especially as there are no other alternative management games out there. I guess I've just snapped abit as the price has gone up 10 pounds this year for a product that I think personally has evolved very little of anything in ten years

  10. 8 years apart. Which one looks nicer?? Come on its a no brainer.

This isn't just about aesthetics my whole point in this post was to see how far it's come in nearly 10 years. And I wanted to make sure I wasn't just remember things better than they actually were. Literally first time ever I'm so appauled by the state of current engine I personally find it unplayable. My results are decent and realistic. It's the repetitive dull nature in the way the matches play out is my gripe.

Full back. Shoot or gut back. One on ones 99% miss so so dull and predictable.

Plus yes.. I think it looks pretty crap for 2019 and I have graphics on full. I can't watch 3d never have as the animations are so cringe I prefer to use 2d and my imagination

  11. Yes I stand by that. Obviously it's an engine that has its faults but having played the 2 of them I genuinely think 12 looks a better product.

Just go try it! Watch how the ball moves around. How a playmaker can slide a ball through to the striker. Who will go on and clinically and crisply Bury the ball. Watch how the net then ruffles. I'm not just making this up?? Why would I?

I just picked 12 randomly. 13,14 and so on are probably even better than that ( I can't remember) but my point was I wanted to do a huge jump to see how much its evolved and in my opinion this 20 version is worse. And btw I loved 19 again it had its faults but I always wanted to go back and play more. This engine is shoddy. Every damn highlight. Full back. Shoot or pull back. Edge of area shots. 1v1 are pathetically in successful. It's do boring and predictable to watch. I literally stopped playing Saturday and have no desire to go back to it

  12. I think you're all missing my point. I'm not saying that 12 is the godfather of all games. I simply wanted to go back nearly 10 years and see how far this game has evolved. If you take any other franchise 8-10 would he light years of difference. Now with just the aesthetics on the match engine alone. There was a 2d and a 2d classic. Why did they do away with this?? Just try it yourselves.. 2d on fm12 ( not 2d classic) looks better than todays. That's just one point I'm making

  13. I literally just ran it for like 2 games so what you're all saying could well be true.

But. Y point being is graphically it looks far better. Btw I have a very powerful pc and can run fm20 on full graphics. Fm12 match engine definitely looks by far more prettier!

Then just watching the highlights play out. So much smoother. So much more variation then this current one that's been put out. Please just go and checkout one game. Put it in 2d ( not 2d classic)
