  1. I find I spend an inordinate amount of time on my youth team working out the correct numbers for each squad, who to sell, who to loan and who to promote, scouting talent, training them, making sure they've got the right coaches etc etc.

It's by far the most time consuming part of the game. Each summer I normally only make one or two star signings for my first team so my transfer activity is over pretty quick usually by July, I then spend the rest of the summer having to deal with my youth team.

Whilst I do enjoy that part of the game there are a few things that could be done to make the job a bit easier.

Firstly, with youth teams we can probably tone down the attitude. I'm sick of 16 year olds demanding I loan them out. It's fine for senior players to be pushy but the youth players are far too demanding. And when you've got about 50 to work through it's very time consuming.

Secondly, the menus need to be easier to navigate. When I loan a player out I need to be able to recall them but the default setting is always "loan cannot be terminated". Is there any way of changing the default setting so I don't have to tick the boxes every time?

Thirdly, if I offer youth players for loan (I play with Milan, so one of the "top teams") there should be some interest. Otherwise I have to endlessly go back and re-offer players out.

Fourthly, I should, easily, be able to target specific levels. I generally only want to loan out players if they'll play in Serie B but sometimes of the 20 loan offers I get some are in Serie B and some are in lower divisions. There should be a simple way of filtering out the lower divisions.

Fifthly the whole reporting thing needs to be improved. I get such mixed messages from coaches with some giving lower stars but then the report tells me the player has the potential to play in Serie A. Which is it? Also when it comes to contract renewals I need to see the potentials on the same page as the contract renewals page rather than it constantly reverting to the contract renewals page every time I offer a contract (I hope that makes sense).

The whole thing just needs to be better thought out so it's less time consuming and more user friendly.

Yep, that'd be the Club World Cup - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_Club_World_Cup

I see the new format includes 24 teams and 8 from Europe!

No wonder I qualified. The world and its mother did too.

It's going to mess with records as I try to keep a record of the winners of each competition to set myself a target but with this being held every 4 years you can't really measure it against previous tournaments.

In fairness, however way I worked it out, Milan have won the most World Club Cups with 4.

I might need to start a new record keeping for the new format.

I was Leeds manager at the time and I think I gave them a break (the ones not playing in the World Cup). Then had 2 weeks of training, followed by 3 weeks of friendlies. I played 3 friendlies, one per week leading up to our first game back which was 27th of December. It seemed to work ok as we battered Tottenham in that game.

I think the problems come during the run-in when you have two games a week for the majority of the 2nd half of the season. Luckily I wasn't in Europe but if you are it may be very difficult to keep players fully fit for every game. You're going to have to rotate and potentially prioritise certain games/competitions.

Yep it's going to be busy in the second half of the season and I've also got Champions League!

There's also talk of some World Club Cup because I made the Champions League final. I'm not sure when that's happening but I saw something pop up about me qualifying.

Depends what country you're in. As I was managing in England I took the opportunity to give the lads a breather, don't know how it affects the winter break in other European countries? The mini pre-season was quite handy actually as I just took over at a new club!

In Italy they have the Winter break on top so didn't get back in January.

Went with ramping up training and moving the younger players down to the youth team.

Had some pretty decent stat boosts and got to play some youth players in friendlies.

    It's a really nice touch.

  5. So World Cup 2022 has come around and I don't have any matches between November and January.

Only handful of my players are going to the World Cup (cannot believe Chiesa didn't make the squad) so I'm just trying to work out what to do with the ones who stayed back.

I have some friendlies lined up but what are people doing with this gap?

I think the choices are to ramp up training or to give the players a break?

In real life I'd probably give the players 2 weeks off and do a mid-season pre-season high intensity type training with friendlies lined up.

What are people doing to make the most of this?

EDIT: I've noticed my youth teams are still playing matches so might move a few of my younger players down. I'd imagine if I move some of my senior players down they'll complain so not going to risk it.....

Not all attributes are allocated equally in FM. It is much harder to get a CB to increase one point in first touch than let's say a CM. Putting them on individual focus only increase the probability of increase in that set of attributes. But if the possibility is very low at start, there is nothing u can do about it. This soft cap is in place to prevent someone training a CB to have 18 passing and 18 vision for example which is unrealistic.

Especially for players that are very close to their max potential like romagnoli it is very difficult for them to improve something they are naturally not good at. U will have better chance of trying this on a 18 year old newgen for example.

This is true but a 12 First Touch is not great particularly for a Ball Playing Defender. It translates to 60-65 in PES which is also not great.

Player development makes no sense to me in FM in general.

At least in 2019, in FM 20 I could not complete one the whole season. So, there was some "attributes redistribution"

If player has reached his maximum, some of his attributes will get lower so other can get higher. So because of that my best winger got better at marking, but slower, and worse at dribling at age of 23. I don't know what sane person would came up with that idea "if he wants to be better are something, he must get worse at something else". Like they were all drunk when somebody proposed that so they accepted. So I was seeing wonderkids after great season becoming worse at key areas. Players should not reach their peak too early, some players get better even at 30+ of age in reality.

Again, that was the case in Fm19 I don't know for fm 20

    They've overthought it.

It's a problem we see a lot and FM is particularly bad for it. The more complicated you make something the more likely you end up with anomalies.

It really shouldn't be too complicated to tell a player to work on one thing and that one thing improves. The challenge is to pick that one thing and sacrifice improving other things. That's as far as it needs to go.

Yeah, AM does general, but I manage individual. Mostly I keep it in the role they play and use focus for single attributes, but I sometimes switch roles if I want a player to have a slightly different focus. I set a reminder to myself every 3-4 months to review it, so I can see who is not doing well enough. Sometimes it's the player himself who are not applying enough effort, and then I often get rid, but for the most part I have a chat with them and they have a boost.

I very rarely have to have chats with them now, but I do whenever they are under 6.5/7 in training rating and tell them to straighten out. I'm in the summer holiday now, so everyone is blank, but most hover about 8 with some regularly getting 10s.

    Impressive indeed.

I do the same as you with mixed results...

The reason I think I find it so noticeable is because I'm actually physically updating the attributes in PES to meet with the improvements in FM. I have put together a stat converter which is totally made up but basically takes the physical attributes and multiples them by 5 to find the range and then use the related mental attribute divided by 5 to get a number in that range.

So Finishing 15 in FM translates as 75-80 in PES and then if a player has 10 Composure in FM they'll end up with a 77 in PES.

In order to do the stat conversion I enter the stats into an Excel spreadsheet so I get a real sense of what has changed. I only do this once a year. And it's frustrating to see the one attribute I've told the player to focus on for the previous 12 months not change.

  9. I probably am paying closer attention to players' development than most people because I'm using Football Manager to simulate the attributes for my PES game.

So I have to physically update the PES stats with the FM stats. I only do this one a season in August (which is probably a bad time because the players are only coming out of pre-season). Anyway, there should be at least logic to it....

I have taken over individual training so I can get my players to focus on specific attribute training. I also make sure that the starting line ups are the same throughout the season so the players should be getting the same game time. I also keep a really tight youth team and have targeted loans to help develop my players. And it's all pointless because there's no correlation the attributes that I set individual training to and the changes....

For example, Romagnoli was told to focus on his First Touch so his Jumping Reach improved...

Calabria was told to work on his Crossing so became Stronger....

Gabbia was told to work on his Positioning so increased his Flair....

    You get the idea.

Now I'm sure someone will say: "It's more complicated than that."

    But really, it shouldn't be.

If I tell Romagnoli to focus on his First Touch, and every single day he comes to training he focuses on his First Touch, his First Touch should improve. He shouldn't learn to jump higher.....

In fact if I caught him jumping instead of practising his First Touch I'd say: "Hey Alessio, why are you jumping when you should be practising your First Touch"? and he responded by saying "Sorry, Maldini's Heir, I'm actually training for the high jump in the Olympics....."....I'd be disappointed.

So I'm quite disappointed with this. It makes it feel pointless.

  10. This just happened to me.....

So I'll be using the in game editor to undo all of these transfers.

    Any other suggestions?

PS It'd also be "realistic" if a manager died midway through a game but probably would also undermine the experience somewhat....

PPS The whole premise of Football Manager is that it gives the player the ability to control a football club. The level of control is greater than a manager would have in real life in any event and managing transfers is one of the most important and most enjoyable parts of the game experience.

Also bear in mind that stars you see are their current assesment and they will sometimes change their opinion after a season or two.  I had a player with 3 gold star and one black PA turn into 4 gold star and one black. He was just better assessed. Also star ratings are based in comparison to the players of your own team and the league you play in so when those change, star ratings can change also.

Yes I get that it's just that I'm comparing two players in my team who play in the same position.

The question really is quite simple: which of these two CBs are better?

As the title says, I have signed a few good future prospects and I mean really good.

What is more beneficial to them improving, Staying with my U23 squad with brilliant coaches or loaning them out for the season with a guaranteed start every game with a lesser team for the season?

    Cheers guys

I try and fo a few things...

Firstly with my Milan team (and I'm sure other teams are the same) I find there are too many youth team players across U18, U20 and on loan. Therefore I spend an inordinate amount of time over my first full summer culling my youth team. I aim to have about 23 players in my U18 and U20 and some focused loans (although sometimes I can't get rid of players so have to loan them too). I also limit my senior squad to 23 and then as I get injuries promote players from youth team.

That still leaves me with 60 odd youth players (23 x 2 plus about 10 on loan) so the next thing I do is identify the most likely candidates for the future usually by putting together a starting line up just from my youth team players. The rest then are fillers.

I can then focus on these 11 players. Moving them between youth teams and the senior team or doing really targeted loans. A player knocking on my first team door needs to be playing at least in Serie B with the option to recall.

I can also focus their individual training, mentoring and all that other stuff.

can only be judged on a player by player basis, as has been said. I'd never loan a good prospect out with less than regular starter status, but always have options to recall and always make sure on the club he is going to has decent stats, and (not sure if it matters) but is in an active league (ie not view only)

Is there any way to set the recall option as default so that you don't have to keep selecting this when offering players out on loan?

Stars are a subjective rating that is relevant to your squad strengths amongst other things. Your 2.5 potential star player may have an objectively higher PA ceiling, but be competing with higher rated players in your team for that position. Or it may be reflecting current ability or league averages for that position. I have had good scouts give a 2.5 star player a full 5 star potential but when I've looked behind the scenes he's only had about 2 PA. And this was reflected by diminishing potential stars as the seasons went on, until he ended up as a 2.5/2.5 star player.

    Thanks.

It is incredibly confusing though especially when I comparing players who are in the same position and one is rated lower than the other.

As you'll see I'm not just working off stars but reading the notes. But I don't know what to make of a note that tells me a player has the potential to play in Serie A when he's rated lower than another...

I think I'm just going to stick to my fairly hands on approach of reviewing stats at the end of each season to see how the players are actually preforming. Ultimately if a player is getting good averages and scoring or assisting or defending at youth level I'm prepared to give them their chance at the higher levels via a loan stint.

  15. I'm trying to work out which of my youth players have potential and the player reports are all over the place.

I'm asking for reports from my coach who has the highest stat for spotting player potential - 20.

The reports are all over the place.

He's telling me that one of my players who has a potential of 3 stars (Mintasinot Luscietti) only has the potential to play in Serie B player but a player who has a potential of 2.5 star player (Andrea Capone) has the potential to play in Serie A.

So if that is the case why does Capone have lower potential stars than Luscietti?

And it's not just these two. There's other examples as well.

I'm being told that this player (Luca Stanga) only has the potential to play in Serie B even though he's my 6th ranked defender behind (with the next player up being one of my senior players). Whereas the player who is ranked below Stanga (Andrea Gabriele) does not come with any indication as to his future level.

    How does this work?

  16. I've bailed on this game but I still use FM as a database with which to play FIFA (I'd prefer to play PES but can't seem to find where to buy it).

Basically FM generates everything from fixtures to injuries to transfers to opposition teams and results, and I play the games through FIFA and bring it all together on an Excel spreadsheet. It sounds like a lot of work but I get to play about two games per hour and that's my session done before I go to bed. It's satisfying and I also get a level of depth from the game.

Because I have to update opposition teams I am across all of the transfers in the game. When I have to create a youth team player for FIFA I have to go through each of their attributes and bring them to life. Anyway, horses for courses and all that.

The reason I am still commenting here is because something occurred to me. FM is far too convoluted when it comes to the tactical side of the game (which is actually the key part for a management simulation game). In some areas it's too limited and in other areas it's too repetitive/contradictory.

For example, I cannot tell my team to take short free kicks when deep. I do tell my team to do that but the game is not set up for it. Tactically I don't want to lose my shape for the sake of a deep free kick that'll I pump long with very little chance of scoring. Instead I'd prefer to take a quick free kick but the game just can't handle it.  As you get into the other team's half the players just awkwardly stand around in the wrong positions so that when a short free kick is taken the players end up out of position anyway. It's not what I wanted to do and it looks rubbish.

Meanwhile there are all these different, competing instructions for each thing. For example, there about 6 different ways to tell a player to close down:

    • as a team instruction (which also includes the option of not closing down the GK);
    • as a player instruction;
    • as position characteristic;
    • as a team mentality characteristic;
    • as part of the pre-match tactical briefing; and
    • as an opposition instruction,

and all of that has to interact with the players' attributes (e.g. work rate), the formation and the other tactical instructions (e.g. the defensive line).

    What a mess.

How do I tell my player to close down the right footed LCB but not the RCB or the GK?

They could probably get rid of most of the above and just leave it to opposition instructions which in some way interact with player instructions.

Really team instructions should just be very general - probably just the formation and positions.

I mean how do you combine: direct passing with an instruction to a player to keep it short which then is contradicted in the tactical briefing?

In fact what is the point of the tactical briefing full stop?

I'll stick to my FM/FIFA behemoth.

  17. 15 hours ago, Tyburn said:

I disagree it’s generally not positive. I’ve been playing the same tactic for 2/3 seasons now with a very settled team. We’re playing some great stuff.

You know when you see a manager on the touch line going crazy at his team? That’s happening because his players aren’t doing what has been asked of them. I highly doubt even Klopp is completely happy with what he sees every single game. It’s also taken him years to get a settled squad playing the way he wants. He’s also adapted his tactics since joining from Dortmund. Just as an example.

In real football players sometimes/maybe often don't what they're told usually because they're under pressure.

In FM players are playing an entirely different sport. I still don't know where that pass from my LWB to my RCM comes from. It's nothing I've ever seen in the sport. But my team is specifically told to keep the passing short. I have a diamond midfield which means my LWB can pass to the LCB, DM, AM or striker who I have told to move into the channels. Hell he can even hit a cross field pass to the RWB. But in no world should he pass to my RCM.

  18. 4 minutes ago, Tyburn said:

I don’t understand this. There are plenty people who don’t see what you’re seeing. What are we doing differently?

I highlighted in my last post how I was mugged by the AI. Klopp probably feels mugged by Atl.Madrid right now, the season Liverpool are having. It happens.

If it’s happening a lot then perhaps we’re not Liverpool and perhaps our system needs looking at.

But how is it the "system" when the exact same "system" produced a 5:0 after one restart?

If I had to guess the probability-meter that runs the game just went a bit haywire and needed a reboot.

And that's not even what drove me to quit. In one game my RCM scored 3 goals which were all candidates for goal of the season!

And the worst part was my LWB kept hitting a weird-not-quite-cross-field-pass-like-I-have-never-seen-before-in-football. And it wasn't just one game. This is happens about 5 times each game and just looks ridiculous. It either sets up a counterattack or a goal.

We all have different experiences. I've seen people complain about set pieces but I don't score or concede many. We all have different experiences but the issue is that those experiences are generally not positive.

  19. 57 minutes ago, CFuller said:

And this is based on... just your opinion?

It's fair to say looking across the comments that a large number of people, many of whom have played the game for years, are less than satisfied with this version.

FM19 seems to get some stick but, personally, I never had much of an issue with it. I don't even have that high standards. I just can't continue watching my LWB hit the most unlikely pass across the pitch to my RCM bypassing my ACM who will score another goal of the season when I've specifically told my players to keep it short!
