  1. In my opinion, SI should find ways to make the game harder without artificially boosting the AI, and while keeping the balance between AI and Player teams. I think the way to do so is to make life harder to ANY team that is consistently "succeeding", not only the player. By succeeding I mean getting promotions or winning trophies, depending on the teams reputation.

I think that is the right way to make the game harder, as it avoids artificial penalties to the player or boost to the AI.

A couple of options in this line:

-Change how players and staff react to winning. Maybe add a hidden complacency attribute that increases after "succeeding", in a way that players stop training and playing hard, thus forcing the team to renew its squad if complacency gets too bad. The complacency hidden stat could depend on the person's determination stat and personality, and could affect Work Rate, bravery, concentration and similar stats. Complacency could reset to 0 after the player is transfered to another team. In practice, this would penalize teams winning too often, as it often happens. I find very unrealistic that I can systematically keep my players at high training ratings after several successful seasons. IRL very few teams are able to concatenate long periods of success.

-Introduce more complex player interactions in squads, in a way that my dressing room atmosphere is not always maxed out. Star players should compete more often to be the better-payed in a squad, and should develop rivalries more often. This would help preventing the player and AI to assemble too-dominating squads both by ego competition, and budget constrains

Of course, this goes in parallel with fixing MAE bugs that players can exploit

  2. As I see it, @h3nrique_SEP comes with a very legitimate complain that I share completely, and you can only tell him that all the tactics he tried are broken. Even if that is true, he should still be allowed to force his players to not shoot from distance, or a least have a much stronger impact on the decisions taken by the more 'disciplined' players (i.e. those with good decisions, teamwork, an whatever other traits you might think of).

With the current ME, you can design the best tactic you're capable of as a moderately good FM player, follow all of the "experts" suggestions about role combinations, and still have Messi or Coutinho (as examples of players with highest tactical and mental skills) trying nonsensical shots from far away despite having much better options, just because they have the "shoot from distance" trait.

To me, the actual topic of debate is "how much the team instructions and individual traits should influence the player choices". That is, how "disciplined" should the players be to their tactical instructions vs. personal preferences.

In my opinion, since we all play this game as coaches/managers of a team, more weight should be given to tactical instructions: If I want my fullback to NOT CROSS balls, he should not it. If I want a guy to NOT SHOOT, he should not it, regardless of how many other options he has available when he has to take a decision. Not being able to enforce such options is ... well ... not realistic, and very frustrating.

Currently, the game only allows soft restrictions in the form of "Cross less often" or "Cross more often", I would like a 3rd one that we could call "If you cross you'll be substituted". The same for shooting.

  3. I just managed to set up a very effective 4-2-3-1 with Dortmund in my current game. My tactic is very similar to yours, so I think you're really close to having a good tactic.

In terms of TI, my advice would be to set the defensive line and the LoE to Higher instead of Much Higher. These are much better options if you want to use Hummels and Akanji. The former is too slow, and neither are agressive enough to chase/win the ball up high. It is even worse with Zagadou.

Reus is working great for me as SS, with Witsel/Weigl as DLPde paired with a BBM. I don't see Reus as an AMsu. Also, I don't see Witsel as BWM. Much better as a CMde or DLPde given his excellent tactical skills. As a minor comment: make sure you sign a good replacement for Reus, since he'll miss half of the season due to injuries.

Alcacer and Belotti (I also signed him) are doing well as Poachers or as PFat in away games when you're not favorite

I use Guerreiro as FBat and he's doing great. On the right side, having a WBsu might be too offensive, leaving only two players (ie the CD) ready for the defensive transition. I use a FBde

I'm not an expert in tactics so stick to the advices of others if they contradict me.

Re. the long shots "issue" which people see for their own team (not AI teams) which has been mentioned above.  These are examples from one of my saves:

I'm not trying to say "it's your tactics".  Clearly there are examples of players choosing to shoot when there are arguably better passing options regardless of your tactic.  The frequency of this could cause issues.  I see it myself (although not often) and when I do I tend to take the usual real life manager approach to it - "wtf are you doing Charlie, pass the ball!"

But I've said it before and I'll say it again - there is a tactical help forum just two clicks away and typically speaking the people who make such posts have never looked for help there.  You may not find a resolution, but unless you try you'll never know.  What have you got to lose because as you can see, I don't have a problem with long shots.

I do complain about the number of long-range shots.

My perception is that my tactical choice of "not shooting from long distances (or however it is called)" is completely useless. The players simply don't seem to follow the instructions. That's it. This is what I complain about. If I play slow, possession style, balanced mindset and 4 offensive players (many passing options), why Messi (smart player on the field) tries so often from long distance?

In previous versions of FM, like FM2017, I understood that players with poor decision-making were prone to try absurd long shots. In FM2019 I have all sorts of players (including "smart ones") trying too often, including completely crazy attempts from furtheraway.

It might be my fault. It is completely possible. It just seems that my previous knowledge about FM (about 10k hours played) is not sufficient to tell my players what to do in the pitch, which is something to think about...

    More observations:

    - players trying to cross the ball despite opponent standing half a meter from them
    - players crossing the ball with their weaker foot instead of cutting the ball to their preferred foot
    - players opting for longshot by the edge of the box despite having clear options for through ball into the box
    - defensive line stupidly gravitate towards ball carrier leaving huge space to exploit on the other wing (sometimes youcan see 5-6 players running towards the ball carrier effectively removing all of them from play)
    - volley shots when ball is comming from behind the player (just concedeed a goal when player volleyd a ball hit from 40m behind him while he never looked at the ball until he hit it in the net like nothing, Van Persie's goal looks like poor cousin in comparison, whole situation looks incredibly unrealistic)

    - players returning to their designated positions after set piece, they completely ignore opponent ball carier and just run by like getting back to default position is the most important thing to do

    - players running with ball at their feet during counter attack after set piece never pass the ball despite having options, every single one of these counter attacks ends up in the ball carrier being tackled

I completely agree on all of this. Particularly, the high amount of longshots is driving me crazy

  6. I've played one season with Barça. Messi scored 6 goals in the domestic league in 33 appearances. Suarez 17 goals in 35 matches. Coutinho 2 goals in 28 matches. Dembele and Malcom, both 1 in ca. 15 non-complete matches. In turn, Lenglet, 8 in 30, Piqué 5 in 34, Umtiti and Pavard (signed) 3 in ca. 20 Matches.

In summary: central defenders scored 19 goals in a season vs. 27 goals scored by three of the best attackers of the world in one of the bests teams. Concerning the manager (me), I have more than 4000 hours devoted at FM including the 2015, 2016 and 2017 editions. I think I know how to set tactics properly.

It is evident to me that the ME is not well balanced. That said, I still enjoy playing it

    Greetings to all
