  1. So, everything is sped up, and made more sensible? Finally. I wish it had been prioritized in the previous 2 games, but I'll stop complaining, and declare that I'll be having myself a pre-ordered copy. It would take me ages to get into a save because of having to do set pieces for every side, defensive and offensive- so many indirect set piece variants... and now, it can be much quicker. I will be much more eager to pick up a save, even if my tactics ruin every attempt.

  2. J-League is in the upcoming game? Well, unless the set piece overhaul is so minor I get angry, I'll buy my first FM since 21. I do hope the set pieces will be player-oriented instead of focusing on the position in a formation- that's the kind of overhaul set pieces have needed.

I think you should first look at what is happening in those tough away matches.

For instance...  Is your team giving the ball away too much? Are you unable to create chances? Are you giving away too many set pieces? Are you getting beat by through balls? Are you losing the ball in a very specific area? Are particular players having trouble more than others?  Etc.

Once you've started to answer those questions, you can then start to figure out how to tweak things.

What I see is a tactic that is quite aggressive and risky.  You're using "positive" as the team mentality, but I would advise you also click on each player and check their individual mentality. You'll probably find some of the support duty players are "positive" or "attacking."

The other thing I notice right away is that you're using a halfback and a BDP, which tells me that perhaps your goal is to play possession football where the team forms a back 3 (HB, BPD, CD) similar to those old Dutch 4-3-3 systems that morph into 3-4-3 etc.

If you're trying to play possession football, it's entirely possible that the positive team mentality coupled WITHOUT any shorter passing / tempo adjustments could be taking away from your desired style.

You're also using "counter" in transition, so that will also hurt a possession focused approach, because players will look to immediately launch counters when they win the ball back.

When playing more cautiously, conceding too many set pieces is the problem. At the same time, I cannot create enough chances. If I try playing more offensively, I get beaten by through balls. The tactic, as it is, was fine at home against Chelsea.

That's a pretty offensive tactic. Positive mentality, two CMs who roam from their positions, attack-minded fullbacks, high press, counter-press, counter..

Maybe for harder away games you could drop back to a mid-block or drop the mentality down?

I did try playing on Cautious and Balanced, with a lower block. I give away too many corners and free kicks. I do not use Get Stuck In- only Hojbjerg might have Tackle Harder.

  5. I've been trying to figure out a good away approach for games against top EPL clubs with Tottenham, but no matter what I try, I cannot at least be competitive in an away tie against Arsenal, at the start of the season. If I want to have some success. I've had issues defending set pieces, and even after adjustments, I've had issues there. This is why I've tried my usual set-up. I'm aware that a high D-Line or a high press are even riskier.

This screenshot is before the first game of the season, which I most often win because I'm the home side. Is there a tactical solution to help me perform better when away from home, or is the problem in my players? Due to the need to mind the number of homegrown players at the club, and the price tags of players that would improve the team, I am pretty much using a squad that hasn't seen any fresh faces.

  6. 6/10. Human rights scandals, the dull atmosphere...but there were great upsets in the group stages. Knockouts were not as enjoyable, and the refereeing was so weird that I ended up believing in conspiracies. If it wasn't for Japan and Korea in the group stages and Croatia stunning Brazil, it would be a 2.

  7. Morocco are the last team France would like to face, but they have to. Giroud will have to be immense in order for France to avoid the fate of other giants. Croatia have a better defense than Argentina, but the Argentinian GK is a penalty shootout asset. My homeland might want to win in 90 minutes, if possible. A homemade recipe for nullifying Messi exists.

    Morocco-Croatia final match.

Not about finishing. An out ball would have helped. Something to stick up front. A Mandzukic would have made a hell of difference

End of day Brazil only have themselves to blame. Tite was incredibly naive. That midfield was amateur stuff, throughout the tournament

I mean, it's easy to use a 4-1-1-4 formation against teams that don't defend well. They obviously thought we were worse at defending than Switzerland? Well, back to the waiting list for a 6th title for Brazil it is.

We never bothered about scoring because we got no quality upfront, except for Perišić. And I was referring to knockout phase more than groups. Morocco game was similar to England from EURO. Take other 7 teams in the QF, no Croatian forward except for Perišić makes any of those rosters. Having Callum Wilson would be massive for us, let alone someone better.

And the coach is scared to experiment with any kind of unorthodox setup or formation.  He just fields the three best midfielders and hopes they create something based on their football IQ.

Actually, when I go through results on every big competition up until Dalić, we were always either massively unlucky or had refereeing decisions against us, up until Dalić took over.  Since then, he just keeps getting to penalty shootouts, more or less.
But then again, we didn't eliminate anyone who should've beaten us and had way more chances created.

I don't recall a single victory against top nations where we defended and sh*thoused a win. 2002 against Italy the ref disallowed two of their clear goals, but we didn't park the bus. The only parked buses were in '04 when we were between generations and pretty bad, England just destroyed us that game. A match before that, we're up 2-1 against France, Trezeguet scores a clear hanball goal.

We literally don't know how to play defensive football, as in park the bus and hoof it. It's just that with current roster we have no solutions against parked buses from lesser teams.

France in the League of Nations can be a template for parking the bus.

  10. Croatia activated their zombie mode once again. Cannot put us away, we just won't die. And Livaković outdoes Subašić.

Maeda getting Japan's goal is nice. Hopefully he gets confidence for Celtic. IMO, the best defensive forward in the world. Paralyzed Croatia's build-up.

Japan have lost, but their tactics were decent, and forcing the runners up of the last WC into penalties is proof they belong in the upper tiers of world football. As a secondary Japan fan (rooted for them until this one), I'm gutted my homeland had to face them this early.

  11. Japan are showing why I love fotball. Not enough technique or strength to rule games, but their guts... I've watched all 3 of their games, like I've done before on WC-s. Feeling of a Japanese assault on a big team is...mind-blowing.

I won't be mad if they knock my homeland out. Moriyasu is a living legend, no matter what happens now. With a dead tired Modrić and Perišić, I could see a third giant crashing down.:(

I might be biased, but I don't remember teams as bad as we currently have advancing to knockouts.

Three teams with nowhere near enough quality in it already. At least other groups have more quality and that side of the draw will be better.

But Argentina/Australia vs Netherlands/USA is really poor.

I'd say that almost any of the other 12 teams that qualify could beat both Argentina and Netherlands.

It has opened up for Messi, about time he scores some knockout goals and delivers another semi-final, at least.

USA would handily overpower Argentina. Unlike Poland, they can run. Against Holland, Argentina have better chances.
